This is a great game-it's different, but fun. Don't waste hours blowing up aliens, running from monsters, or shooting criminals, but care for animals such as cows, horses, dogs, sheep, chickens and fish, grow crops, make relationships, participate in village events and festivals, and make yourself a part of a farming world many of us have never experienced. Harvest Moon: Back to Nature takes us into the simple life of a farmer, and is oddly realistic. Play for hours; never get bored even after beating it! Take in the graphics, sound effects and certainly get addicted! Be sure to visit the festivals, participate in animal competitions, swimming, races, and even tomato throws! Extend your house as soon as possible and get kitchen utensils, cook food from crops and animal produce, and even watch your favorite shows on television! Don't miss out on one of the best games Natsume has to offer-19 dollars is cheap compared to this game's awesomeness!

Yeah, buy this

How could a game about farming be entertaining? You have no idea.

The mere fact that this game is about farming is a major turn-off to anyone who hears about it - but it's not boring at all. On the contrary, it's one of the best games I own. This game makes farming fun! But it's not all about farming! There's a social aspect, as well. Not only do you have to make friends with all your neighbors, but you have to charm a girl and eventually get married. You later have a child. (Although your son will never grow past toddler) It's quite the complex game, really.

I'll tell you right off that it's not the most exciting game. No blowing off heads, no shooting people, no dodging street cars... Don't let that turn you away! This game calls for hours (upon hours, upon hours, upon hours...) of fun.

I have every Harvest Moon game released in the US, and quite frankly, this is by far the best. Most people purchase the version for PS2 instead of this one, simply because it's more recent, but it's nowhere near as good. You can't even get married in that version.

The real reason that this game is the best is probably because of the festivals. There's an average of about a festival a week, and I must say, their quite good. The festivals in the other games (with the exception of N64) are quite mediocre. They're hardly worth going to. The festivals in this game are very interesting and they're always worth seeing.

I have only one criticism for this game: Saving, loading, and merely switching between scenes takes far too long. In other versions, these actions typically occur without delay... In this game, however, it takes a few moments. It's not terribly long, it can just be a pain.

Despite that little set back, it's a marvelous game that anyone with a half of mind can enjoy. I whole-heartedly recommend it to anyone with the slightest interest in a game that requires strategy.

For those of u not familiar with the harvest moon gene it is one of the most unique game in the world. You are a farmer on a farm( i know i know it sounds boring but its not) there are different animals like: chickens, cows, a dog, horse, and bees. there are tones of people u can talk to and make friends with. there a different festivals that u attend like: tomato festival, new years, thanksgiving. there are also ones that involve Ur. animals like: dog race, horse race, chicken/cow/sheep festival. Also after making Ur. relation relationships better u get to see events (the bad part is that there not CG). In town there is Ur. farm, a chicken farm, a other farm, beach, hospital, church, mountains, carpenters, seed shop, bar/restaurant, bakery and some houses. u can build up Ur. old house by adding a kitchen (where u can make dozens of different foods for energy or gifts), bathroom, green house, get objects for Ur. house, and many more. 1 of the biggest thing u have to do for money is "harvest" each season (except winter) u can choose different things to grow like: tomatoes in spring, corn in summer, and egg plants in fall. overall Ur. ultimate goal is to get married, have a kid, make everyone Ur. friend, make lots of money, win all the festivals, get all the house extension, all the recipes, all the cooking things by the end of the 3rd year. There are many harvest moon games one for SNES, 3 for gameboy, N64, Psx, Ps2, i would highly suggest getting this one because it is the best (yes, the psx one is better then the ps2 one its not a typo Over all i give harvest moon 5 stars if Ur. a fan of harvest moon this is a must have, if not i suggest u pick it up or at least rent it.

2nd Review - Almost 5 Years Later

My original review of this game was: Harvest Moon for PSX - A game worth owning, January 3, 2001
Reviewer: "jamieinmn" (Jackson, MN United States)

Well, it is nearly 5 years later and I am still playing the game. I'm 24 years old now, and I'm not ashamed to say that the game is a lot of fun. I started a new game last monday and have been playing everyday for a week. I still use the player's guide I bought to help me decide which gifts to give to certain people and for the cooking recipies.

I am familiar with the game now, so there are no new surprises for me, but I find it fun to start a new game, and to try and be better than you were at the last game. For example, with my new game, I am trying to earn all the money I can, trying to get everyone to like me, and winning all of the competitions. For the first time, I was able to actually win the swimming competition. I did that just the other day.

This is still a great game. I would recommend getting it if you don't already own it. Obviously, it's not easy finding it like it was 5 years ago. But there are a few sellers here on Amazon that still offer it new. If that should ever change, you could probably find it at your nearest GameStop or any other place that buys, trades, and sells used video games and accessories.

In Summary: If you still don't own this game, shame on you. You've sure missed out these last 5 years! Buy It!

Some of the reviews on here ae faulse. The new harvest moon dose not have 10 girls sorry to say. Although every girl had a new personality. Popuri has a sort of cluless Ann personality, and Maria (Marry) is pretty outgoing. There is a whole new world for you to explore, and it is much bigger than the last. There are tons of new festivals (my favorit is the chicken sumo). You can hire elves to work at your ranch, and raise fish. It is a lot harder than HM64. You can't just go cut down wood and build your house. first you need to go to the mine (which is open year-round, and takes up no time), then you need to find the right ore. You then take it to the blacksmith along with 1000G and get an upgrade. Then go out and cut all the wood. And oh yea they only do one kind of expansion a season! The first ax only cuts up twings! Also the swiming festival is a lot harder, you need to stop and take breaths. Your dog starts out as a puppy and to gain his trust you need to play with him and pet him. Moon Moutain now Mother's Hill is a lot bigger but really out of the way. There are very few wild plants to sell so it is pretty hard to make money. Oh yea and the worst part is you start out with a rucksake that only holds 2 items and 2 tools! The frist upgrade is 4 items and 4 tools but coasts 3000G! The secaond one (the one in HM64) holds 8 items and 8 tools, but it coasts 5000G (almost as much as a cow!) This means a lot of back and forth trips. As bad as this may sound I spent about 7 hours straight on this even after beating HM64. If you have decied not to get this after my reveiw, look at my star rating!

one of the best even with all the new ones coming out!

Harvest Moon 64=HM64

Harvest Moon:Back to Nature=HM:BTN

If you have HM64, read this review.

This game is really fun and a lot like Harvest Moon 64. If you are tired of HM64 you would like this game because it is more of a challenge. I also like that you can cook because I love to cook and that you can have up to 20 cows/sheep and 10 chickens. The only problem with the cow/sheep is that you forget which animals you have cared for. You should only fill the cow/sheep barn halfway. The only other disadvantage I can think of is that aside that the music is almost the same as HM64 is that it takes really long to load each screen. However, if you like me, you don't notice once you get used to it. I also like that the people in the village have different personalities than they used to. The problem is that the people say the same things all the time. In HM64, they say random things and it's much more interesting. It's a little strange because some characters' personalities are reversed. For example, Ann is the best cook in HM:BTN and is the worst cook in HM64. Same goes for Elli. It's weird because you would think that Popuri would sell seeds, but she sells chickens and Karen, whlie she still loves alcohol, is a nice, caring person. 2 things about the girls...Popuri is not childish and Ann does not act like a tomboy. They act like normal people. Also, after you get married and get all the home extentions, this game will get dull, so start over often.

Overall this is the most fun game(besides HM64) I have ever played.

Insanely addictive farming fun! Who would have every thought farming would be this much fun? Harvest Moon for those who are unfamiliar with the long running franchise started out on Super Nintendo and has continued on to Gameboy, Playstation, N64, and PS2. Harvest Moon is a fun game for the whole family. The point of the game is to restore your grandfather's farm back to its former glory. You are given three years to complete this task along with making friends with the locals or the townies will run you out of town! Times flies by quickly in this game. Each year consist of four months. In these months you plant different crops and raise animals like chicken, cows, sheep, fish, a dog, and a horse if your lucky. You earn profits, play mini-games, get involved with the locals, built onto your farm and home as time goes by and if your lucky you can get one of five girls to marry you. This game will quickly become a favorite even if most of the tasks are repetitive . But you are a farmer and farmers do have to get up and feed the cows everyday. Buy Harvest Moon for your kids or just by it for yourself. Be a farmer without all the hard work.

It is now 2006, and 6 years ago this game came out - let me tell you, I still love to play it! (Infact, I played it all day yesterday and all of this morning!) :)

Harvest Moon: Back To Nature is one of the best games I have ever played. And I play a lot of video games, believe me, and I rarely absolutely love love love a certain game - but this Harvest Moon game is absolutely an acception!

This game certainly fits the description of RPG: From raising live stock, to growing crops, this game has it all. Whoever knew farming would be so much fun? Befriend the townspeople, race your horse, and enter your cow in the Cow Festival. This game has everything. And, of course, meet the woman of your dreams, pop the question, and have children of your own.

Of course, it does become a burden, because everything in the game is so expensive, and your farm is so large and overgrown with weeds, boulders, and tree stumps in the beginning, that it tires you out. Especially when Winter rolls around - absolutely nothing grows in that season - no wild resources - and you cannot plant anything of your own. Unless, of course, you have a hot house, but you practically have to sell your soul to get one of those.

I've played this so much - and let me tell you, despite the harsh Winters and expenses, once you get that final house extension, and get your farm clean and have hundreds of crops, it feels great!

To sum up this game in one word - astounding. Sure, the game is fairly old, therefore the graphics aren't up to par, but they are still cute. Plus, who cares? With a game this fun, graphics are the last thing on your mind.

This is just a fun game. (Can I stress it enough?) Great for kids, teenagers - everybody.

Overall Rating:
Graphics: Old fashion, but still cute.
Sounds: Okay. Can get annoying and a bit repetitive at times.
Gameplay: Stunning. So fun, you'll never get bored. (Except maybe in Winter, in which not much is going on in the game)
Plot: Great.

This game is very good. I have this Harvest Moon and the one for N64 and I will be getting the new Harvest Moon for PS2. You start the game by inheriting your grandfather's farm and it's rundown. The field has weeds and sticks, stumps and rocks. The challenging part is you only have three years to make the farm look nice and to make the vllagers like you. I like playing this game because I like to plant the seeds an watching the crops grow and getting married. I am an expert video game player. I play all the Final Fantasies, Chrono Trigger, Odd World, The Bouncer, Shadow of Destiny, Bloody Roar 3, all the Crash Bandicoots, Soul Reaver, a lot of sports games, Zelda and a lot more. My favorite game is Final Fantasy 9. I recommend Harvest Moon for young and old players.
