Different, and Yet, the Same

I enjoyed this game quite a bit, though many of the elements of the original game have been retained (for example, the need to recruit army members, combination attacks, and the Blinking Mirror).

Some would argue that too many of the elements of the original game have been retained. Many of the characters are the same as in the first Suikoden, and there are some obvious parallels between story elements in the two games (Nanami=Gremio, Jowy=General Teo, you get a boat from Tai Ho and Yam Koo, you play a young male character who leaves the army he started the game as a part of to lead a new army of liberation, etc.). Also somewhat disappointing is that the graphics have not changed much, even though we have all seen with Final Fantasy VII and VIII what the PlayStation is capable of, visually (though the opening video sequence is pretty cool).

The game is not all the same, however. =) Characters can now equip up to 3 runes and you can choose powerful combination magic. Spell animations are a little neater. The castle is more complex, with lots of new minigames as you add additional characters. There are quite a few side quests to add variety (even one involving the Hero from the first Suikoden) and many towns now have trading houses; if you have the patience, you can make a lot of money trading merchandise.

As far as battles go, the one-on-one battles and the typical random battles are basically the same as in the first game, but the major battles have changed. In the first game, the major battles were essentially a game of paper-scissors-rock. In this game, these battles are more along the lines of what you would see in Vandal Hearts or Final Fantasy Tactics (though not as complex). I don't know that I have an opinion on these, as most of the major battles don't really matter in the end (meaning, if you just wait a few turns without acting, a predetermined outcome will happen).

One final criticism is that sometimes it is difficult to figure out what to do (especially the first time you sneak into Greenhill, and sometimes in your castle, you are not sure whether to go to bed, to the meeting room, or to another town). However, there are many walkthroughs available on the web to help you through the difficult spots.

All-in-all, I would recommend this game. It may only take up one CD instead of 3 or 4, and it has its problems (some of the English translation is terrible -- but funny) but is still complex in its own right. If you go into it expecting a good story and a fun way to kill some time, you won't be disappointed.

Okay, but..

There is a pretty good chance that when you buy this game, it will not work at a certain part. I forget where. I'm sure its safer to buy it here than ebay, though.

A great game. But not quite as good as the Final Fantasies

Those out there who decide to play a game based solely on the hype it creates, no doubt know how cool The Final Fantasies and The Lunar series are. But if you skipped over this one just because it did not create the Final fantasy type of hype prior to it's release, you missed something special.

When I picked up Suikoden, it was a slow night, and just about everything else I wanted to rent was out. When I first played it, I was slightly ambivolent in my decision as to whether or not It was a cool game. The opening intro, with it's soulful choir, gripping and excellently composed music, and great still pics of the games scenes and cast, blow's away almost every tune in the final fantasy audio library. Heck, Andrew Loyed Webber or John Williams would be hard pressed to do better. But upon entering the game, things seemed to be... only average. Though the story was good, and the dialouge was well written, and there were powerful and very funny scenes early on, it lacked Final fantasy's epic atmosphere. Also, the opening is the games audio highlight. Don't expect it to get any better then that. But what Suikoden II lacks in atmosphere, it makes up for in substance. The charachter's are written in such a way that even the most fantastic and unreal scenarios seem believable. From Luca Blight's savagery and cruelty, to Shu's strategic brilliance, to Jowry's desparate measures that he takes to protect those he loves, every moment is very believable and real.

Also helping the game is the number of secrets and sidequests that there are. It's here that Suikoden shines, there are limitless quests, charachter's, mini-games, and hidden items for you to find and do. Giving the Game Unrivaled depth

This game is a heavy hitter. There's no doubt about that, but I liked the final fantasies better. They just have a way of grabbing you by the heart strings that Suikoden Rarely achives. It's still one of the most awesome Rpg's out there, and I do reccommend it to anyone who's already completed Chrono Cross or Final fantasy IX. With a little more tweaking, Suikoden III will be able to hang with those big RPG bad boyz.

I can't think of any one who wouldn't like this game!

If your at all fimilar with Suikoden the game play is pretty much the same. I loved all the puzzles and storylines. Once again you gather 108 stars of destiney, but most of them are new (although there are some characters you may remember: Tai ho, Victor, Flik, and even the original heroe!). If you don't know Suikoden, then this game is role playing, fighting and mental solving game. IT ROCKS!

Suikoden 2, One of my favorites.

Great battles, cut scenes, and the stroy making it one of my favorite playstation games. True the first one was not as good as this one, but i'm not complaining. The idea of collecting 108 characters is just too good to be true. The controls are easy to get down and i promise you that you will have a good time playing this Classic RPG. ( First one is not as good as this one.)Enjoy!

Great RPG game ever made!!!

This game... I am not kidding when I say the best RPG of all time. Plot is superb. Battles are awsome. Best of all is the music, its blows away anything you have ever heard in a game before.

Past reviewer but a little older and know how to spell now.

Ok.. I am back.

As most people has already reviewed, this game is great. When I first played this game, I was a weary of the cartoon graphics, but the minute you get into the story, the graphics are either forgoten or loved.

The in-battle character models are about the same as your walk-around models, but the second you use magic, that is forgoten. The graphics they put into the spells was better then most RPGs for the PlayStation I have seen. The battle system itself is also very taking. As a reviewer stated before, the rock-paper-scissors type battles may seem simple, but as you progress, they become complex when strategy is then needed.

Everything about this game I enjoyed. The smooth oriental music, the awesome and intense battle, the awesome stroyline which contains a story of drama, betrayel, and comedy, the anime type cartoon graphics, the vast amounts of variety that this game allows you, the goofy little emotes that pop up above a characters head when a dramatic event has happened, etc...

Another classic amde by Konami

The original Suikoden remains one of the PlayStation's finest early role-playing games, a pleasant mixture of traditional RPG gameplay and strategic planning. This sequel builds upon the respectable framework laid by the first title, adding a far more complex plot and refining the game's graphics. You assume the role of a valiant lad in the midst of a brutal war, and you are fated to reunite the 108 stars of destiny to end the strife encompassing the land. While its predecessor features a few mini-games to dabble with, Suikoden II assaults you with an unbelievable assortment of diabolical diversions. Several games of chance, a rock climbing adventure, and an Iron Chef-style cook-off are merely a few of the many ways to extend your gaming experience. Role-playing fans looking for an exceptionally deep and lengthy quest need not look any further, for this game has precisely what you need.
