If you haven't played the first one buy it otherwise...

Great game but a complete copy of the first one(which isn't a bad thing). I wish the graphics could have been improved on a little bit being that they are carbon copy of the first one (which didn't have great graphics either) 108 character makes for a lot of fun although it happens to be the exact number of characters in the first one. Also the more characters you get the bigger you base gets (just like in the first one). This game is a good game. A 8.0 out of 10.0. This game is not anywhere close to a 10!

Annoying game

I think the story is redicolous and predictable.
I HATED Nanami, as a matter of fact, I hated A LOT of the characters that are supposed to be my friends in the game.
The battle system was good though, fast and easy to use.

I hate the questions with two answers, and you are FORCED to answer one question to continue the game.
Example, hero and friends captures two enemies.
You can choose between "Cut off their heads" and "Let them join us."
Of course "Cut off their heads!" is the top answer, and when you accidently hit it, your "friends" throw a fit about the fact that you shouldn't do that!
Another example is that Nanami wants to join you, telling her no makes her throw a fit until you say yes.
This destroyed the flow of the game.

The cast seemed a bit redicolous, most of the characters are kids/teens fighting a big army.

If the game was less annoying, I might have liked it.

Suikoden II

THIS GAME IS A WORTHY SECOND TO FINAL FANTASY SEVEN. I ENJOYED THE FIRST Suikoden, DUE TO THE FACT IT WAS A HEAD OF IT'S TIME. HOWEVER I THINK THE SEQUEL COULD HAVE BETTER GRAPHICS AND SOUND. OVERALL IT IS A FUN GAME AND NOT VERY COMPLICATED. 108 CHARACTERS IS GREAT.

251.51 for a cd?

I think Suidoken is great game, i highly reccomend all their work, but unless they plan on delivering the cd via viking boat themselves, the price is a bit too steep.

I'll assume the price is a error, and this is my half-assed attempts at humor.

So, once it's fixed do yourself a favor and order it.

The Best Old School RPG on the Market

If you enjoyed games like Chrono Trigger and Lunar and of course, the original Suikoden, you'll enjoy Suikoden II. First the bad news: If you're hoping for jaw-dropping CG effects, lots of FMV, dating elements, real-time strategy, or anything that vaguely resembles innovation, you won't get it here. However, the good news is that none of that matters. This game eschews visual flash or lame attempts to catch some fad for good solid gameplay. All Suikoden II has to offer likable characters, a satisfying storyline, tons of fun minigames, and a game engine that is more or less flawless in its intuitiveness and ease of use. It could be a bit more challenging, and some of the good elements of the first game are missing, but overall this is a great game for RPG fans.

On Par RPG

I like this one better than Final Fantasy 8 (well almost every RPG is better). One thing about this one is it is too easy. If you get the right runes (RAGE, MOTHER EARTH, CYCLONE, BLUE MOON) You can really lay waste to everything and anything including the end boss. Thank goodness there are no Neclord puzzles in this one my hair has finally began to grow back from the first Suikoden. This is a good RPG for the money. I think I spent about 60 hours on it, a good deal of that time was leveling up weapons, characters and acquiring cash. This RPG delivers classic gameplay and is right on with the first game. If you are born of the Dragon Quest, Zork era like I am and you just like to keep it simple this will pass the time.

A worthy sequel

Just like the first Suikoden, what I like best is the variety this game offers. I don't get tired of using the same characters all the time, and although its true that with some many characters in one game, they become rather shallow. But Suikoden II try to make up for that, with sub quests and the ability to gain people's secrets, you get to know each character fairly well. Story is good, and the 2D graphics isn't bad either, make it a pretty good RPG package, pick it up when you have the chance. Overall score, 88 out of 100.

Best Non-Linear RPG - So far

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 1 / 2

Suikoden II is by far the best non-linear RPG that I have seen for the playstations so far.

I have seen Baldur's Gate and Might&Magic games for the PC and if they are anything like that on the playstation - then Suikoden II will not be the best non-linear game, but for now it is !

FYI: I am really getting sick of linear adventure games such as Final Fantasy VII and VIII. It is about time a game like Suikoden 1 & II came out!

Different, and Yet, the Same

I enjoyed this game quite a bit, though many of the elements of the original game have been retained (for example, the need to recruit army members, combination attacks, and the Blinking Mirror).

Some would argue that too many of the elements of the original game have been retained. Many of the characters are the same as in the first Suikoden, and there are some obvious parallels between story elements in the two games (Nanami=Gremio, Jowy=General Teo, you get a boat from Tai Ho and Yam Koo, you play a young male character who leaves the army he started the game as a part of to lead a new army of liberation, etc.). Also somewhat disappointing is that the graphics have not changed much, even though we have all seen with Final Fantasy VII and VIII what the PlayStation is capable of, visually (though the opening video sequence is pretty cool).

The game is not all the same, however. =) Characters can now equip up to 3 runes and you can choose powerful combination magic. Spell animations are a little neater. The castle is more complex, with lots of new minigames as you add additional characters. There are quite a few side quests to add variety (even one involving the Hero from the first Suikoden) and many towns now have trading houses; if you have the patience, you can make a lot of money trading merchandise.

As far as battles go, the one-on-one battles and the typical random battles are basically the same as in the first game, but the major battles have changed. In the first game, the major battles were essentially a game of paper-scissors-rock. In this game, these battles are more along the lines of what you would see in Vandal Hearts or Final Fantasy Tactics (though not as complex). I don't know that I have an opinion on these, as most of the major battles don't really matter in the end (meaning, if you just wait a few turns without acting, a predetermined outcome will happen).

One final criticism is that sometimes it is difficult to figure out what to do (especially the first time you sneak into Greenhill, and sometimes in your castle, you are not sure whether to go to bed, to the meeting room, or to another town). However, there are many walkthroughs available on the web to help you through the difficult spots.

All-in-all, I would recommend this game. It may only take up one CD instead of 3 or 4, and it has its problems (some of the English translation is terrible -- but funny) but is still complex in its own right. If you go into it expecting a good story and a fun way to kill some time, you won't be disappointed.

A great game. But not quite as good as the Final Fantasies

Those out there who decide to play a game based solely on the hype it creates, no doubt know how cool The Final Fantasies and The Lunar series are. But if you skipped over this one just because it did not create the Final fantasy type of hype prior to it's release, you missed something special.

When I picked up Suikoden, it was a slow night, and just about everything else I wanted to rent was out. When I first played it, I was slightly ambivolent in my decision as to whether or not It was a cool game. The opening intro, with it's soulful choir, gripping and excellently composed music, and great still pics of the games scenes and cast, blow's away almost every tune in the final fantasy audio library. Heck, Andrew Loyed Webber or John Williams would be hard pressed to do better. But upon entering the game, things seemed to be... only average. Though the story was good, and the dialouge was well written, and there were powerful and very funny scenes early on, it lacked Final fantasy's epic atmosphere. Also, the opening is the games audio highlight. Don't expect it to get any better then that. But what Suikoden II lacks in atmosphere, it makes up for in substance. The charachter's are written in such a way that even the most fantastic and unreal scenarios seem believable. From Luca Blight's savagery and cruelty, to Shu's strategic brilliance, to Jowry's desparate measures that he takes to protect those he loves, every moment is very believable and real.

Also helping the game is the number of secrets and sidequests that there are. It's here that Suikoden shines, there are limitless quests, charachter's, mini-games, and hidden items for you to find and do. Giving the Game Unrivaled depth

This game is a heavy hitter. There's no doubt about that, but I liked the final fantasies better. They just have a way of grabbing you by the heart strings that Suikoden Rarely achives. It's still one of the most awesome Rpg's out there, and I do reccommend it to anyone who's already completed Chrono Cross or Final fantasy IX. With a little more tweaking, Suikoden III will be able to hang with those big RPG bad boyz.
