It's been so long since I purchased this game, but despite how old it is, the fun factor of this game is just unbelievable. The plot is by no means dry. Music is appropriate during cut scenes. The anime portraits are beautifully drawn. Should you allow yourself, this game can definitely move you to tears, laughter, and, of course, anger. You'll find yourself attached to certain characters within the 108 stars of destiny because they all have unique personalities. And yes, there are minigames, as well as plenty of "hidden" characters/items.

Those of you who have been exposed to the current generation graphics might have to readjust slightly-keep in mind this game is great by playstation 1 standards. However, if you refuse to play this game because of it's old school graphics, then you are just missing out. And as the other reviewers have already stated, this game's a keeper.

An absolute classic

Easily the best RPG I have ever played. Graphics are not the best, but the battle system, immersive storyline, great music, detailed cities, and unique characterizations are phenomenal. Unlike many future RPG's, the load times for Suikoden 2 are very short, most likely due to the substandard graphics. If you can get over the graphics, the rest of the gameplay is incredible. The plot is unforgettable, and collecting the 108 stars of destiny is challenging and fun. Many side-quests, secrets, and player choices make this RPG one of my favorites to this day. Suikoden 2 is a classic.

Annoying game

I think the story is redicolous and predictable.
I HATED Nanami, as a matter of fact, I hated A LOT of the characters that are supposed to be my friends in the game.
The battle system was good though, fast and easy to use.

I hate the questions with two answers, and you are FORCED to answer one question to continue the game.
Example, hero and friends captures two enemies.
You can choose between "Cut off their heads" and "Let them join us."
Of course "Cut off their heads!" is the top answer, and when you accidently hit it, your "friends" throw a fit about the fact that you shouldn't do that!
Another example is that Nanami wants to join you, telling her no makes her throw a fit until you say yes.
This destroyed the flow of the game.

The cast seemed a bit redicolous, most of the characters are kids/teens fighting a big army.

If the game was less annoying, I might have liked it.

Buy it NOW! $125 is a STEAL for this amazing game.

If you don't buy this game now, you are a crackhead. This is easily the best RPG ever to grace any videogame system. This game FAR surpasses anything even today. The only complaints I would have with this game are the result of future suikodens giving fans what they asked for. Namely jeane as a playable character, more of her boobs and less clothing. Mcdhol makes an appearance in this as you can load the save game from the first suikoden- a very original idea. Much of what needs to be said has been said by others. If you don't add this game to your collection you belong in a psyciantric hospital.

the best RPG ive ever played

i remember getting this game as a christmas present when i was 12? 13 maybe i dont really remember which, but anyway, my parents got it for me since i loved the first suikoden so much. well, this one's like that, except only about a million times better! the combat was very similar, and you saw the return of some of the characters in the first one. this game focuses a LOT on character development, and it feel like they're not there just for their strengh, but the characters in this game actually have a unpredictable personality to them. knowing what ive learned in history class, this game sound like its loosely based on the wars of ancient greece and such. this game really sucks you in, most likely because of the characters. sure, the graphics may mildly suck, but the storyline is incredible (game creators these days could learn from this). people are trying to sell this game for any price up to 300 dollars. well, i wouldnt sell my copy for all the money in the world. am i crazy? maybe. but about the game, is it good? its more than that. this is one of the best games i have ever played, and if you are thinking about buying it, dont think anymore and buy it. you will not regret it.

Well...

Not much to say here that hasn't been said...there is definitely a reason why you can't find this game for under 100 bucks these days. I'm so glad I picked it up when I did. I had already owned and loved the first game (which was an impulse buy for 20 bucks at wal-mart) and saw this one was out in Babbage's but kept putting off buying it. Thankfully by the time I did they had some left! I didn't know it was so rare back then. The intros to this game (meaning the start up cinematic and the credit scene when you actually start playing) are two of the best scenes and musical compositions I've seen/heard in my gaming history. I just love the music in the Suikoden series, but parts 1 and 2 definitely blow out all the later games. Anyway Suikoden 2 is definitely the high point in the series. If you decide to pay the big bucks for it you'll be justified.

One of the Gilded Greats

When I look back now at when I bought this game, as well as several other great games, I can't remember exactly what inspired me to buy it. What I do know is why I kept it. Suikoden 2 is not only the best game in the suikoden series, it's also one of the greatest role playing games to ever grace the market. The story is rich and immersive, the characters memorable and iconic, and the battle system is classical perfection.

The game puts you in control of one of the two main characters who, although they are best friends, have opposing destinies. When their own country betrays them for an excuse to go to war, the two start on a path to try and find their place in the world, trapped between the home that betrayed them and their sworn enemies.

A lot happens during the course of the story, not unlike the drastic changes that would take place during a war. Yet the story never stretches itself thin. It keeps you interested in every step up to the final confrontation. The game also takes advantage of genius war tactics, that were used in actual campaigns in history, as part of the story.

There are also the customary 108 characters that are collected through out the game. Some are support characters that will add functions to your army and dimensions to your base castle, and most of them are playable characters that you can use in battle. Each of the characters, even if shortly introduced, are memorable and full of dimensions that are sometimes established with only a few short sentences. Even in such situations, the characters are rich with life making this perhaps the best cast in any suikoden game. Each character is animated in an anime-esque style, which makes sense it being a japanese game. Even if you are not a fan of the style of art it is the perfect face for the game when you see it all together.

The battle system in the game is traditional RPG turn based format. But they use the turn based system to perfection. There are six characters on screen, 3 in the front row 3 in the back. Characters in front can attack freely but characters in the back row can only attack if they have long range weapons, such as a bow. Characters that share some kind of history, or know similar fighting styles, can team up to do combined special moves. These moves range from being simply entertaining to completely devastating. Charactes who can't attack from the back row can still function as fighters if they have a combo attack with another character. This adds a well rounded strategic element to the set up of a conventional group, since characters with combo attacks usually need to be in the same row or in the same column to perfom their attacks.

I have beaten this role playing game multiple times and still find it just as entertaining as the first day i picked it up. It is truly a gilded great, and that's not just a funny phrase. Anyone who has looked for this game in recent years has probably found it ranging from $55 to $250! I will certainly say, I am grateful I never sold this game, and if you ever obtain it, you will not be disappointed.
