Correcting the record

First of all, I will agree this isn't the greatest Final Fantasy game ever made - but for those who can understand basic English, it wasn't meant to be. It was marketed, and states right on the box and on the product description, that this is an entry-level game designed to introduce a new player to the basic concepts of RPG gaming - specifically geared toward younger players. Some of the comments on here are totally inaccurate. The statement by the person posting as "anonymous" where he/she says "This really isn't a part of the Final Fantasy series. It's just labeled as such so it would sell better here in the US" is a completely inaccurate statement. The game was designed specifically for the US and sold in the US first before it was released elsewhere. RPGs were not selling as well in the US as Square would have liked and thus designed this game hoping the bridge the gap between traditional action games and RPGs. The reviewer posting as "Shadow Mage" made a similarly incorrect statement: "This isn't even a real Final Fantasy game, in Japan it was known as "Mystic Quest Legends". It was only labeled as a Final Fantasy game so that it would make better sales in the US." The basic reason why this statement is wrong has already been explained in response to the "anonymous" post, and the game was later released in Japan as "Final Fantasy USA: Mystic Quest" not the title Shadow Mage gave it, so his claim about wanting it to "sell better in the US" is wrong because it was released in the US first and later released in Japan, and his claim that it didn't carry the name Final Fantasy in Japan is also wrong.

This was the second Final Fantasy game I believe I played after FF4 (originally released in the US as FF2). I had played FF4 a number of times and FF6 (3 originally in the US) was not due out for some time, and I noticed FF Mystic Quest on the shelf one day and gave it a try, knowing, because I read the box, that it was a simplistic-style RPG designed for someone new to the concept of RPG games. It was nothing extraordinary, but it was well worth playing and fairly enjoyable and something new at the time. The graphics were fairly standard for the time and the musical score I thought and still think was very well done.

So if you are thinking of playing this and haven't yet, ignore the incorrect statements made by others, but don't expect this to be the best RPG you've ever played if you pick it up and switch on your SNES - it wasn't meant to be that way, otherwise it would have a number rather than "Mystic Quest" alongside Final Fantasy.

I turned it off once I found out you can jump...

This really isn't a part of the Final Fantasy series. It's just labeled as such so it would sell better here in the US. And yes... you can really jump in this game...

I played this game because I devour any RPG that Square puts out. It was targeted to "beginning" RPG players, but I still enjoyed playing it. My young niece and nephew enjoyed walking around and hacking up the monsters without really knowing what they were doing. The graphics were a little more simplistic and so were the sound effects and music, but it did not reduce my enjoyment any.

Avoid it, even if it's free

Honestly, I never imagined that a Final Fantasy game could go wrong. Even the terrible FFX and X-2 I was able to enjoy. However, this piece of crap never even approaches enjoyable. Unless you're a collector who MUST have every FF game/merchandise out there, avoid it like the plague.

Okay, I think ridiculous that people are bashing this game. And no, I'm over 13, I just don't feel like logging in right now.

This is an excellent little game. The only problem is how simple that it is, like others pointed out.

I can't believe people are saying they hate this game because you can jump. Since when has jumping been such a bad thing? All it means is that you can reach a few high platforms, that's all.

I'd say if you're new to FRPGs, or if you're just looking for a simple but sweet game, this is for you.

IS THIS SOME KIND OF JOKE?????

I have to admit, this has a simple story, simple graphics, etc. But I rented it when I was just realising my love for RPGs. It is a good game for a beginner; it is fairly easy to figure out the puzzles. I would say I liked it. If I went back now, I'd probably prefer a game with better graphics and all, such as FF10, but don't let this stop collectors or beginners. Hope this helped. It's my first review.

I've played worse. Not FF material, but good for kids.

Though any SNES game bearing the title "Final Fantasy" can now be called a collector's item, this is definitely the least sought after of the bunch. This is a hard game to appreciate having experienced parts 4 and 6, but for younger gamers, this is the perfect game. The story is strictly storybook-standard fodder, non-violent and pleasing to simple minds. The graphics and music are not even worth mentioning, as they cannot rightfully be called Final Fantasy material.

But considering the target market, it would be unfair to totally trash this game. If I had a son, I would get this game for him as an into into RPGs. The better installments could wait. I wouldn't call this game the "Worst RPG Of All Time", since I have played much, much worse.

The worst FF

This is a good intro to RPGs but I would say if you are over 10 you will not find this game fun at all, try all the others on Super NES and PS and PS2 but this one. First of all it has a really bad setup for battles it has a very easy but boring battling system and gets to where you don't want to play it. I would not recommend this game.

The Best game ever!

When I got the Super Nintendo, It came with all these cool games. One of those were Mystic Quest. I played that game everyday! But then came the time to sell it. I was so mad, but I was getting a 64 though. The graphics in this game are great, (not like Ocarina of Time), The music is awesome, the stroyline is cool, and the whole game is just all in out fun. But one day, about 5 years after I sold it, I saw I thing called ROMS. That website had FF:Mystic Quest! I was so happy! Anyways, this game is very cool. Amazon.com has a good price for it too.
