Fun Game for a Beginner...

I played this game because I devour any RPG that Square puts out. It was targeted to "beginning" RPG players, but I still enjoyed playing it. My young niece and nephew enjoyed walking around and hacking up the monsters without really knowing what they were doing. The graphics were a little more simplistic and so were the sound effects and music, but it did not reduce my enjoyment any.

FINAL FANTASY: MEDIOCRE QUEST

I know there's some of you who'd like to see this game get 1 star, but come on, it's not THAT bad. For example, the music, although not excellent throughout, is pretty good. My favorites are the Volcano, Boss, and Gale Mountain themes. The Boss theme is ESPECIALLY good, though, one of the best I've heard. I know that many of you complain, "Oh, I don't like the random battles." Well let me ask you this: Would you prefer 10 (TEN) MANDATORY battles on the world map before you can go on to the next area? I didn't think so. The dungeons and caves are a different story, though, as you can avoid most enemies (they appear onscreen)--unless you're going down a one-way tunnel. So the battles are a mixed bag, as you can see. Next, being a very early SNES title, the graphics and story are very bland--compared to later Squaresoft titles. Amazingly enough, I'm GLAD that Squaresoft made this game. Yes, GLAD. Why? Because when a system first comes out, companies aren't too sure what the full potential of that system is. Wouldn't it be dreadful if Squaresoft tried to put their BEST storyline, characters, music, gameplay, you name it, into this first game--only to realized that the SNES can't handle it, or that they could have done better later on? So I guess you could call this an EXPERIMENTAL Squaresoft game, just a way of sticking one's toe in the water. And before you start slapping your green numbers down in front of the cashier or reaching for the DOWNLOAD button, I suggest that you read other reviews--do a Google search or something--beforehand.

Not bad for a beginner's game.

Come on people. Let's stop slamming this game and take it for what it is. It's a simple, basic game designed for little children or others who are completely new to RPGs. This isn't meant for people who've been raised on FF6, 7 and 8.

Now, when you take it for what it is, it's actually pretty cool. 10 mandatory battles before proceeding is really not that bad compared to random battles--at least this way you can do your fighting and get it over with instead of getting attacked every 2 steps like in FF7 or 8.

Also, this game has the absolute BEST battle music I've ever heard in a Final Fantasy game.

Now, the graphics are simple, the music is simple, the story is very simple... everything about this game is simple. It's like the Sesame Street of RPGs, and that's exactly what it was designed for. If you just take it for what it is, it's not that bad at all.

I rented this game when I was 3 and a half years old every time I got my alowance i would spend it on this game. I have played almost every single super nintendo game it the world and this is the best and only one I have never beat. This games graphics are as up to date as they were when it was first made. The caracters are some of the best i have ever seen. The story line is almost one of the most neat and cool one i have played on. As a roleplaying game this is the best i have ever played.

When I got the Super Nintendo, It came with all these cool games. One of those were Mystic Quest. I played that game everyday! But then came the time to sell it. I was so mad, but I was getting a 64 though. The graphics in this game are great, (not like Ocarina of Time), The music is awesome, the stroyline is cool, and the whole game is just all in out fun. But one day, about 5 years after I sold it, I saw I thing called ROMS. That website had FF:Mystic Quest! I was so happy! Anyways, this game is very cool. Amazon.com has a good price for it too.

Lets face it, this game shouldn't even be called Final Fantasy because of the crummy map. It's not even challenging! You will get SO BORED after killing the same enemies over and over in a one hit K.O all the time. It's plot is the worst of them all. This is the worst game to ever hit the FF series.

Not a prime example

This is actually the worst Final Fantasy game. It is an adventure rpg. The graphics don't even compare to the other games. The other games deserve 10 stars, but if you want to collect it, go right ahead. Worth maybe at any old game store.

Simply square

This game, beleive it or not is probably the greatest example ever of Nintendo's and Square's contempt of the European games player.

You see, whilst Japanese gamers in the mid 90's were getting their teeth into Final Fantasies 4 to 6 and the Dragonquest Series, and gamers in the States had final Fantasy 4 and 6 to enjoy, we in the UK got mystic quest.

Described on the box as an entry level rpg it was just that - you didn't actually have to think about it so much as have the patience to sit through it - no puzzles to solve outside of 'find a switch', not even square's famous random encounters, the baddies just sat there but unfortunately you couldn't generally walk round them. The square battle engine and menus were there, but none of the compelling gameplay that made FF 6 and Chrono Trigger such classics.

I suppose we should be grateful they gave us Secret of Mana....

Between Zelda and Final Fantasy there is a Mystic Quest

This was Super Nintendo's cross between a Final Fantasy RPG game and a Zelda type RPG game. To start with the graphics are very basic, it looks more like it could be a Nintendo game (not SNES), and the plotline is simplistic going to different areas to defeat a big boss and get an item that lets you go to the next area. Simple isn't it? But then the real worthwhile part about this game is its originality, you can jump in the game, you can cut down trees with your axe, blow up walls with your bombs and climb walls with your claws. Another interesting part is that you can see the enemies as characters on the overhead map! So you can run into them and fight them, but then rather than fighting them like Zelda, it takes you to a battle screen like a true RPG. Something else is that rather than a real overhead map of the world where you explore, you start at an area which gives you four choices of where to go, up down left and right. You select the path and the hero will take that path automatically, no monsters or anything! The monsters are all inside of the areas, towns, caves and caverns.
