It would be great even if there was no multi-player

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 3 / 3

Ghost Recon has come a long way in a short space of time. There it was, at the start of Xbox Live, handing out coffee and biscuits to gamers, leading us round the online world that would consume our lives and sever relationships in the coming months. The second title was more glamorous, keeping in with the gritty tactical warfare that we've come to expect from Tom Clancy games, only with prettier graphics. Much like that good looking yet academic cousin we all hate and envy.

And suddenly, there I was, standing at the top of a multi-storey car park with a rocket launcher slung over my shoulder and a smoke grenade in my hand. I'd already practised moving, strafing, taking cover, leaning and shooting before being shot at by an APC. Running behind a smoke screen, I was briefed by some guy in a helicopter to come up here and take out the armoured vehicle in order to move onto the next step of training. And with one stab of the trigger, all that was left was a burning lump of metal two storeys down.

Command a group of 3 soldiers, take out a group of resistance, control an APC whilst under cover to blow up another vehicle, run and duck into trenches and assist the team in clearing the area before running full pelt for a hovering helicopter to get the hell out of there. Cue the whining guitar solo of an incredibly bad version of All Along the Watchtower by Everlast, and I'd just learned the basics of Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter. Welcome to the Xbox 360.

It's the year 2013. Deployed to Mexico City on a joint operation to capture Mexican military officials involved in illegal technology sales with Columbian FARC rebels, things get hairy when Mexican soldiers hi-jack the public signing of the NAJSA (North American Joint Security Agreement) and capture the Canadian, American and Mexican Presidents. You're thrown into the action as the meeting falls apart, and it's up to you and your comrades to think on your feet to save the world. Again. We should be getting a little tired of all these Mexican and Columbian terrorists threatening to take over the planet in most of our videogames, especially with all the talk of wars and terrorists on TV, but when Tom Clancy gets involved things usually get interesting, and GRAW is perhaps the pinnacle achievement on his CV.

There's little point in jumping around and avoiding the fact that the visuals here are just simply gorgeous. I'm a little scared to rave on about graphics in Xbox 360 games, what with all the power behind my wooden-patterned faceplate almost ensuring that all games will look kick-arse, but Ghost Recon: AW looks absolutely sensational. Mexico City has never looked so stunning, with streets detailed right down to curb stones, litterbins, postal boxes, public phones and foliage. Of course, the real purpose of these objects is to give much needed shelter, however temporary, during a gun fight. Parked cars are dotted around the streets, all with full-breakable windows and pop-able tires, so you're never safe when in hiding.

The first level, for example, I'm on a highway exit ramp, slowly edging my way down behind cars. Zooming in on enemy soldiers patrolling the streets below, the graphics aren't strained, and I'm watching this guy slowly bore himself to tears wandering about, occasionally kicking stones before slamming to the ground with a bullet in his ear. Better still, a few moments after sending him to the spirit in the sky, I'm crouching next to the building where some of my stray bullets landed, and the bullet holes are still there. There's a cool puffing effect when bullets hit buildings and surfaces as debris is kicked up, much like when you see helicopters firing in films. Running across the street, a guy on higher ground empties a magazine in my direction, and all I see is lines of debris fly up in my face as I narrowly make it to cover. Did I mention that getting shot in the head is an instant kill? No? Well, you've got to watch yourself around the streets of Mexico, because Rambo certainly isn't welcome and wouldn't last past the first 5 seconds of the intro. It pays to plan ahead with the handy map allocated to the back button, shoot when the enemy is reloading and get team-mates to apply suppressive fire.

Enemy AI is generally impressive, especially the way when you shoot into a platoon they all scramble for cover and fire back. Some fire blindly as others toss grenades, you can hear commanders yelling instructions and snipers will run for vantage points. Staying in one place just isn't an option, because you'll soon be out-gunned. The problem I found is there are still instances, although few and far between, when enemies will run at you from a blind side and pump lead into your body from point blank range. Surely the point of the game is to fire on sight, and not at touching distance?

That's the single player mode though, and as fun and challenging as it is, a candle simply cannot be held to the multiplayer mode on Live. Up to 16 players can team up against or with each other with 8 a side, on search and rescue missions, capturing flags and territories or the bog-standard and much loved frag fest, in teams or every man for himself. The graphics still stand as strong as ever online, in particular one level at night on a tanker in the pouring rain is quite simply breathtaking. A few of us here at Thunderbolt Games met up and played for a few hours, this level one of them, and marvelled at its excellence. The sheer attention to detail is astounding, as when you enter a pipe for cover, bullets ring around in it and shake the screen uncontrollably.

There are plenty of weapons to choose from to cater each profession, from riflemen to grenadiers, with various forms of sniper rifles, machine guns, rifles, and grenade launchers. This allows teams online to set up battle plans from the off instead of hunting down particular weapons on the map, and if you ever fancy a change then simply swap for any gun lying on the ground. Two firing rates, from one bullet at a time to fully automatic cater for pot shots from cover or burst fire for cramped locations, and thanks to Clancy's involvement, reloading and changing guns is realistic. No-more magazines lasting for hours, you can empty a clip on a platoon is mere seconds, then sit behind a wall yelling expletives as the enemy return fire and you're still scrambling to reload. It puts an emphasis on team play, with certain members firing when others are reloading to form an unstoppable force. It's all fun at the end of the day.

There's not much more I can say without delving deep into the story and ruining things, or spend another 5 paragraphs telling how cool online play is. Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter is stunning, exciting, fun and exhilarating to play, a great example of the 360's power and online service and an essential title for all Xbox 360 owners. See you online.

Over and out.

Awesome graphics and effects. You can play this game for hours. One on one battles are exciting. Lots of different scenarios to choose from and lots of different weapons from which to unleash the apocalypse.

Still Playing After 7 Months

I got this game together with my Xbox 360 in March, 2006, and have played a lot of other games since then, but so far nothing compares to the love affair this game has inspired. Though the single-player campaign is well worth the purchase alone, it's the incredibly addictive multiplayer that keeps this disc returning to the tray month after month. Online play is fast, fun and (suprisingly?) friendly with strangers (especially in co-op). Make it the first 360 game you purchase - you see what all the "next-gen" hype was about.

Ghost Recon is one of those must have games

Ghost Recon has been a very succesful franchise for Ubisoft. Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter is probably the best one yet. The game does take a little while to get into the flow of things, but after a while the intensity really picks up. The AI is very good, and the graphics are amazing. GRAW was one of the first smash hits for the 360 as well.

If you're a Tom Clancy game fan, I highly recommened this game. After all, it is Ghost Recon.

A Great Game

I got this game as soon as I bought my 360. I was amazed at the quality of the graphics of the game. I have an HDTV so it looked like I was in the action myself. The controls are a little hard to get used but you get used to them after a while. There are only two things that I didn't like about this game and that your teamates would sometimes just sit there and get shot at. I also hate that the campainge wasn't as long as I hoped it would be. Everything else was very good about this game. I would recomend this to all who like shooter video games and who love the military.

This IS My Rifle there Are MANY like it but this one is mine alone its useless but in my hands we are the definition of Power

This review is based on my personal expierience with G.R.A.W. If you are into war games or shooters This is best release for your xbox 360 yet. Oh you say "What about call of duty 2?" Well call of duty is still great just not this great. Before you get mad I would like you to read why I says this. The graphics for this game are just breath taking and so real looking, from shadows to facial textures everything is sweet. The invironment is wide open you can go any where besides inside some of the houses and buildings. Guns blazing, explsions bursting, blood and bodies flying,whoa!... After a few months of playing I will need some help. Any way it all looks and feels great no question. <><><><><><> Game play:Picking up the controlls mite be alittle hard for new players but once you do it will become instinct.(If you have trouble with control just play to have and you will pick up fine.) For all of the vets you will appreciate the new inovations and sharp controlled response between on screen action and what buttons on the controller you press.<><><><><> Online play is the best. There is 1,000 different game variations, you can have upto 18 players in co-op mode and 30+ in death match. I belive they are setting a new multi-player standard.(I'm addicted to playing co-op with more than 2 or three people or more, we had ten players once and it was all out war man) So over all G.R.A.W. has it all good graphis great sound awsome action. Pick it up if you can. Rent it if you want to be mad you wasted $7.00 that you could have applied to the $60.00 it takes to purchase.

Solid Game

This is my first review written here and only do so because I have a few minutes of down time at work. GRAW is a fantastic game. The graphics on the campaign level are stunning as is just about every game that I've seen for the 360, but the beauty is the multiplayer.

I agree with the guy below who said Halo2 is overrun by poorly educated tweenies who only know how to swear or mod their xbox. But that had been my favorite game for over a year until this one. I also agree that UbiSoft has got to tweak how the set up for the multiplayer game is established. It is slow and it is frustrating to get into a game, esp when you want to get in with your on-line friends. But once in, there is not a better shooter out there. Period. The graphics are amazing and other than a little stutter at the beginning launch even with 16 players there is hardly ever any lag--unlike any Halo2 game with more than 2v2.

The maps are huge and there is so much detail. When you shoot into trees, you knock leaves off of them. You can find a sniper hiding in a bush when the wind blows the leaves out of the way. There are nooks and crannies and elevations everywhere. You can full on run and gun or hide and snipe and a good mix of both is needed to win on most maps.

Long and short, there is not a better shooter out there for 360. And if Splinter Cell and Halo3 are not out until Oct-Nov as is rumored, this is money well spent that can keep you busy until then.

Very fun; best GR

Note: this review is for single-player only (as I do not have live connected yet).

Gameplay: Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter has some of the best gameplay I have encountered. The controls are very easy to pick up on and very intuitive, even the command structure for your squad and support elements, which cover from armored personnel carries, Bradley fighting vehicles, Abrams tanks, Blackhawk helicopters, Apache attack helicopters and a support drone, which allows you to receive advanced intel on locations. The new cover system is great. You can go against the wall and when you get around a corner you peak around to see what's around the corner without exposing much of yourself. The only real complaint I have is that you're squad AI isn't all that smart all the time, sometimes they can do something stupid like run around a corner without seeing what's around it, and the result of that is that you'll have to medic him. There are some glitches in the game, too, such as looking like you're flying when crawling prone up a hill, but these glitches and problems don't happen all that much so it's not that big of a deal.

Graphics: The graphics are some of the best I've seen ever. The character models look superb, the Ghosts as well as the rebels, and they all have very realistic movements. The vehicles, that you command, not fully control like Battlefield, are also beautiful and pretty close to the real thing. The urban environment also looks great, very realistic, makes you feel like you are in Mexico City. The lighting is also worth mentioning, as it gives a feeling of being in a near-equatorial environment, by having blinding sunlight and high contrasted shadows.

Sound: The sound is also very good. The weapons all sound different and like how they should. The combined sounds of the weapons, yours and the enemies, combined with the support elements, make for a very great and immersive feel, especially for those that have surround sound.

Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter is a great addition to an already great series and is a must-have for those who already love Ghost Recon and/or modern war games, especially the tactical kind. For those who don't care for this genre or series, rent it; at least give it a try.

The Best Game For The 360

This game is amazing and alot of fun, most people feel that stealth games can get very boring but this is a stealth game with a difference because around any corner there can be an army ready to blow you away.
Controly a squadren of 4 men including your own and you can tell them to attack for you or just follow your lead as you do all the killing.
Your prime objective is to stop the rebels who are hell e bent on taking over mexico city and that is where the game is mainly set on the streets of mexico city.
You wouldn't believe the realism of this game with everything being animated for a gunshot which is very true because you fire at an enemy and if you miss you will see a small cloud of smoke appear on a far gone wall which gives you a slight buzz because on most games the bullets just vanish into nothingness.
You can also gain control of a number of vehicles like tanks and helicopters and also command a tank to go ahead of you and blast the enemy so you can have a free ride.
Buy this game you will be addicted.

Lets get the bad out the way seeing as there isnt much. Your squad like to run in front of you while your lighting it up, and they really dont help much, the fact that they put a new downloadable pack that costs almost 20 bones for more missions and maps is outrageous considering extension packs for pcs are either free or cheap. But all that aside this is a well made game the multiplayer is awesome the fact that you can communicte with your online squad while movin and brusin is great, add a little chance to talk smack after a round is great, big boos for the upgrade cause a lot have purchased this which meen you have a harder time finding a match online cause you dont have the upgrade version. Graphics are great as well as the movment and realistic physics of the game, a grenade causes damage with a healthy radius just like real life. A nice assortment of weapons including the camera gun adds to the variety. A couple blackhawk missions where you door gun some baddies is a nice change of pace, throw in a fairly long and challenging campaign mode rounds out the game into a must have category foe 360 owners.
