Hold on a sec, I'm playing FF8!

Where do I start? First of all. I beleive that the most important element in an RPG is the storyline. It seems that a lot of people have forgotten the roots of role playing, back when DND came out, you'd roll die to see if you did any damage. THe most important was to hear a story, and have a good time hearing it. Now FF8 c0omes into play and we have one of the best storylines I have ever heard. If you normally just ignore what people say and just walk around killing things, you'd better take the time to hear what people say, it makes the experience a whole lot better.
The main reason why FF8 is the king of RPGs is because of it's storyline combined with one of the square's best magic systems. One thing that I found unique (in a good way) was that instead of having MP, you collected magic spells. Let's say you draw 3 cures out of some bad guy. You can give cure to other party members, or use it once, so you only have two cures left. And Gfs add a lot more depth to exploring. It's hard enough to find GFs. When you use a GF it takes the place of character while it does its attack, (on ratio you character does 70 damage, your GF can do up to 4000 damage depending on elemental weakness and boosted abilities).
Normally one of the last things I look for in an RPG is graphics. Square's really out done itself, though I hear gameplay graphics are better on PSX, my bud compared these graphics to the recently released C&C Renegade. I use up tons of save slots just to save right before a movie so I can watch it over and over and over again.
If you are craving for a Roe Playing game and all you can do is surf the net and look at games you want that are [money], spend [money]or so on FF8,

Simply awesome

This is the best game i have ever played in my life. It has a splendid story that'll amaze you. Great characters and a incredible battle system with the GFs and limit breaks that are awesome. Also, the animations, cinematic, and music are grand. It's extremely fun to play.
I have played it for years and it hasn't bored me yet.
So far this is the best FF Squaresoft has ever launched, it beats even FF7 and FF10.
You'll be amazed how good it is when you buy it. Don't believe those people that say this is a bad game.
Truly deserves the 5 stars.

It has been a while since i bought my copy of this game but and it is one of the greatest games i have ever played. Sadly i can not recommend it here because when i got this game it only cost me 28.99 so i am almost positive i you can get it for a lower price if you are willing to look hard for it.

Dont be afraid to buy it.

After reading some of the rewiews below, i was a little afraid of buying the game, afraid to waste my money, afraid to play the game for ten minutes and then throw it to the trash. Finally i buy it, and i have to say that the game is absolutly awesome. The story is complex and keep you reading and reading the dialogs just to know more. The grafics, especialy the cutscenes are incredible (except maybe for the backgrounds, but they are not terrible). The junction system its not a pain in the head, the manual and the tutorial in the game teach you very well how to use it. My advice is that you dont be afraid to buy this game, i told you, you wont be dissapointed.

This is as good as it gets.

The simple fact of the matter is that RPGs don't come better than Final Fantasy VIII. The characters are interesting, the plot is engaging, the battles tough but exciting. I've played every final fantasy from VII to X2, and this is by far the best.

Pros:
Epic storyplot
Incredible battle system
Excellent animation for a PS1 game
Fantastic Soundtrack
Extremely long gameplay

Cons:
Unusual magic system
Some truly difficult missions

Just the lack of important negatives and wealth of positives, along with a low price tag, should convince any fan of turn based RPGs to buy this game.

granted... this was requested by my sister. But if I had found this by accident, it still would have been the best gift I gave this season! All of us are in amazement over the game! it flows well and is a challenge. the scenes are better than I could have hoped for given the generation of the game. Overall, every game enthusiast would love this game!
A word about the person who sent it!!!Way to go! the follow up e-mail was wonderful. it got here in just a few days! you are really on the ball and I appreciate it.

This is THE worst final fantasy game ever. Besides the graphics this game has a terrible storyline none of that famous final fantasy music and im just not interested. I definitely recommend final fantasy 7 over this (which would probably be the BEST game I've ever played).

i don't accept mediocrity from square (except XI).

This game was merely average (at best). It was only good enough to keep me playing--which is not very good, giving the current game famine. The juncture system and the magic system needlessly waste hours of time. Everytime you get new magic, find a new GF or change characters--which happens FREQUENTLY throughout the game (magic is obtained by drawing it from monsters or from draw points) you have to stop for a few hours and reorganize. Furthermore, using the juncture system, you you can only obtain 100 units of magic. You don't want to use this magic on enemies because it is "junctured" to your status (strength, vitality, elemental, etc.) and using it will weaken you. Also, there is less reward for fighting monsters (you don't attain magic from leveing up) and you don't attain money from fighting (instead you basically recieve a pay check every so often--$ is depedent on your seed rank--which you can obtain by taking tests). Even if you did recieve money from fighting, you can't buy anything interesting, (i.e. armor, weapons)only items (tents, potions, etc). I miss the elements that play off good ole' american materialism--damn red japanese (kidding). Anyways, the story was average, characters were average. Don't bother unless you are really bored.

Badd!

I have played all of the other Final Fantasies, and I was sorely disappointed with FF8. The game play was confusing, especially with the use of magic, and the plot and story line just sucked. The story line was so cheesy, numerous times I had to shut the game off and walk out of the room! The next FF had better be just awesome to make up for this collosal flop!

A great RPG, but... a good Final Fantasy

Okay, now before I start, this game is on my top five list for best games ever, though only ranked number three on my top Final Fantasy list. That said, I'd like to continue about I bought Final Fantasy VIII the day after it came out- September 10th. I was so excited! I unwraped the packaging and got right to playing it. Though as I played it, I noticed that it seemed a bit... off. Well, less of off and more of just different. I've always been a fan of Final Fantasy, and I am still an advocate of FF8.

But still there were some problems that I've found with it. The entire Disc 1 seemed extremely tedious- overall, I don't think that Disc 1 contributed as much to the story line as the first two hours of Disc 3. Actually, I began to loose interest half way through Disc 1, and nearly stopped playing it. But I continued, and realized what a wonderful game this was. It started to get really good at the end of Disc 1. The story line is worthy of shakespear indeed, but not quite as deep as FF7. In FF7, the depth of the story line ran to the core, which questioned the very existance of a character. In FF8, it's simply just stuff that happens. You're not really second guessing yourself about the story line. Though that is not a bad thing, just a different thing.

All of the characters were wonderful, though Zell got on my nerves at times. Though the only bad thing I can thing I can say about the characters is ULTIMECIA. Here is one kink in the story line that you'd wish never happened. You see, in FF8, you never know who the bad guy is. First you hate Seifer's guts, but then you realize he's just a pawn of Edea. Then you start hating her guts. But then she turns out the be good, and it's really an evil sorcerous from the future controling the sorcerouses of the past. Huh? I think that this twist in the plot was not only unnessesary, but it took away something from the game. There was no deep evil character who had such a reason to be evil, you almost understood him/her. No, it's just some weirdo that you just met who you could care less about. Not cool, Zeus. Not cool.

And finally, I think that there could have been more development of the Time-compressed world. Though I'm pretty put off by the fact that FOR SOME REASON you can't visit any towns, I think that making the final disc not have the option to do anything other than train your party/fight Ultimicia was a HUGE mistake on Square's part. Oh, and a great ending sequence. I think I broke a tear for some reason during it... But other than a few problems with the villians, the first and the last disc, and the basic story telling style, this is a great game. I suggest it for any video game/final fantasy fan, though I suggest that a new comer to Final Fantasy/RPGs should play either FF6 or FF7 before playing this game. You have to be 'broken in' to Final Fantasy before playing this game.
