Excellent RPG

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 3 / 3

My daughter introduced me to this game - I normally avoid RPGs because of past experience. I was surprised by how intricate the story line is and how complicated the gameplay can get (junction this, use that, learn ablilities and so on). The graphics are well done, the soundtrack is great and the game runs well (400 mhz PII, 64meg). My only complaints are: 1. There are some scenes where the detail suffers 2. The battle system is hard to get used to All that aside, I've spent much more time playing FF8 than I'd like to admit, even though I already got to the ending. I've played FF7 and FF9, but I like FF8 the best.

The best RPG ever made for PC

This is the best RPG that has ever hit the PC! Final Fantasy 8 has the best story line with outstanding graphics. This is a must have game for PC, even if you are not a RPG lover. This game has the coolest characters that fit in the story line perfectly. If you like magic, weapons, powerful attacks, and realistic CG cinemas. This is a game I highly recommend to any one.

Final Fantasy 8 is a great Final Fantasy. I have Final Fantasy 5,6,7,8,9, and 10. 8 is perhaps the best. I think you should buy this game.

Why, Why, WHY?

Why did Square choose MIDI music to use with the PC version instead of MP3? Why do I have to DRAW magic from creatures instead of LEARNING them? Why can't I purchase any armor? Why do big boss battles turn into half-hour long summoned monster slugfests? Why do my weapons do so little damage, so a guardian force must be used? And lastly, why do the enemies have so many hit points that guardian forces must be used? Too many questions, too few answers. GFs are overemphisized WAAAAAY too much. In the other FF games, they are optional, but in FF8, they're MANDATORY to winning. One must equip a GF on a character just to use the otherwise BASIC options of Magic, Item, Draw, etc. Also, this is pretty much a DIRECT port from the Playstation to the PC, so other than improved graphics, there's not much to see, and I'm willing to bet that the music is much better on the Playstation. The saving grace of this game is the storyline and the movie scenes. You'll want to keep playing to see what happens...it's like a good novel, really. Hey, that's a good idea! Why not make a novel out of the game so we don't have to play it? You don't have to spend countless hours drawing magic from monsters, you wouldn't spend a lot of time playing the completely REDICULOUS card game, you wouldn't have to spend a lot of time walking around, AND it would be a lot cheaper! Buy it if you want a long-lasting game with a good story, but expect it to be 30% story watching and 70% walking around and drawing magic.

this has the most amasing graphics of all the computer games on earth! If you are familiar with rpg's, its the best game on earth but if you aren't familiar, its still the best! There's not much else to say though

Final Fantasy VIII was the first ff game I purchased, and from beginning to end, I was in awe. Without a doubt, the movies were the greatest part. The GF's are great at first, but they simply suck after a while(especially Eden, whose animation takes like 3 MINUTES! ) I've beaten the game twice, the first time takes a while but the second time it's a breeze. I've played Final Fantasy VII and VI, but overall, FINAL FANTASY VIII ROCKS.

This shall be a very short review. If you want to read a review of the game itself, just go and read about the PSX version. Here, I am just complaining about the PC porting :) While the Playstation version is a no doubt five star release, the PC version lacks of the same quality. This does not [stink] like the Final Fantasy VII conversion, where there were also compatibility problems and an impossible controlling system, but: Besides the wonderful graphics (Playstation game on PC? piece of cake...) this game does not offer anything more than the PSX version. (Same could be said for Lunar: the Silver Star Story from Sega CD to PSX... but who owns a Sega CD? It was a way to let the crowd know a Classic) The PC version offers perfect 3D floating on low res locations, while the PSX melted the two elements together perfectly, all in lo res. You must own a 8 button gamepad. (analog rumbling pad on PC? not worth the climb) You won't be able to configure it. I love this game, but on PSX. If you have a PSX, don't even think of "Installing" this thing on your PC. Besides all this, it's still a great game.

Pretty Good Game

I've played and finished this game and I must say I had fun.

The game's graphics take quite a jump from FF7, and the characters now look more lifelike. However, they are still too polygonal. The Movie sequnces that occur every now and then look fantastic, and the magic and GF animations are good too. Still, you'll have to go through the GF animations quite a lot, and after a while, they get irritating (especially GF Eden). Attacks look better than ever, and limit breaks have improved too.

Sound? Well, if I must be frank, the sound really sucks. I guess Squaresoft couldn't find any other way but to use MIDI.

The plot of the game is quite good, with a lot of twists to it. I particularly liked the ending (I saved the game before the final battle so I could watch it again).

The Junctioning system in the game is better then the ones in its predecessors. It's harder to learn, but well worth the effort.

Overall, even though the game lacks in some areas, it is still fun to play, and any person who enjoys RPGs will like this one.

expected more after 6 month of PORTING!

The controls are awfull! SquareSoft could at least code in a keyboard interface. And, perhaps, make the Save menu not look quite as PlayStation'ish - what's up with the two memory-card-looking slots?.As a few recent reviews pointed out,the music sounds much better on the PSX than it does on the PC.Apart from that, maybe a button to skip FMVs once the player saw them at least once. And those Quardian Forces! They look beautifull when they are casted but after seeing them 100 times you'll soon try to figure out how to skip them! Some GF take 76 seconds to complete!Square doesn't seem to understand how the PC world works. We have had 3D accelerators for quite some time now!.That means that they could easily use 800x600 in the game - but you will never see that:the game always runs at 640x480.Granted,the spell effects are so unbelievably amazing that you'd think they might saturate the lower-end cards- but for one,I doubt that is the case, and two,I doubt anybody cares. What might be a more realistic reason,I fear,is that they didn't want(or understand that they should)re-render all the backgrounds for higher-resolution PC graphics, and just stretched the lame PSX backgrounds;and that seriously detracts from the visual lushness that could've been experienced.A PSX doesn't have a keyboard,we all know that. But I refuse to believe,no matter how convoluted and complicated the code, that in the 6 months that they spent "PORTING IT" they couldn't at least make the user be able to (gasp!) *type in* his name using keys, rather than hunting for each letter and hitting 'Select'.Similarly, when you have a lot of spells in your inventory,it'd be pretty nice to be able to press a letter and have the cursor jump to the first spell with that letter. Also, staying true to the FF7 tradition, there's no Load menu choice, so if you want to load an earlier save game you have to quit and reload. As well,it appears SquareSoft went on an interface pruning frenzy, and removed some elements, which are absolutely redundant, and no gameplayer would ever even really need - such as,for example,a Quit menu option.I mean hey,who needs one? After all, you're supposed to play this game nonstop 24/7,why would you do such a blasphemous thing as quit?(Works for me,by the way.)Either way,you have to press Alt+F4 or Ctrl+Q to exit the game.Astounding(!) =) It's sad to see that PSX version looks and plays better than the PC version =(

If you are looking for an rpg with true class, just look up squaresoft in the thesaures: it stands for: RPG. This game compared to the 7 part is king. Too bad the backround looks terrible. Especially in forests. It looks like paper. The characters are good, but a little stiff. If you want a game packed with movies and batlles that never bore you (not like in septtera core :) ) then ff8 is the best. But if you rather have an rpg that sucks , dont look at squaresoft. If you want more info write to me.
