I don't have a cable modem!

this game should marketed as a MULTIPLAYER ONLY!!!

The graphics are gorgeous, however there is nowhere to explore and nothing to find.

I only have a 56k modem - absolutely not fast enough. One has to have a super fast cable modem to play this "deathmatch" game online

still rocking after all these years

A game with very addictive properties. A game (in multiplayer which is all this review is about as I don't play single player) in the first person where you see the enemy and the tip of your weapon. So many variations that it's staggering. Excellant! After all these years with so many iterations on the same theme Id Software has managed to always add the qualities required to progress to the next level in action, intensity and sheer playability of the first person shooter. The market has followed Mr. Carmac, the lead programmer, while he juggles the effects of new technology on the playability of the game. He's batting 100% at present in my humble opinion.

Quake 3 Arena Rocks!!!

I just bought Quake 3 Arena and I was suprised in this game! Quake 3 Arena is really for multi-player so if anyone likes fast-paced multi-player action then I say buy this game. You should practice on single player cause' multi-player is pretty tough depending on who you're battling. Quake 3 Arena has some pretty cool weapons, good graphics, and smart bots. There aren't many weapons but they're really useful and damaging. The graphics are dazzling and the bots are smart. When your battling bots they aren't programed to just chase after you and fragging you. They talk to each other and set up traps which I think is pretty unique. I bought this game a few days ago and it's a pretty cool game. If you like fast multi-player action then I say get Quake 3 Arena!!!

Fun and intense, worth your money but....

QUAKE 3 ARENA needed a solid single player experiance!

QUAKE 3 was meant as a multiplayer game and it is sucsessful on that level, because that is ultimately what you end up playing when all is said and done. The single player mode is merely OK, as it is a warm up for online play, but online play is some of the most exciting out there! I'm talking Deathmatch here. You see, if you are not good at FPS type games, you might actually like and enjoy the rush of QUAKE 3 Deathmatch! There is no strategy, you just seek-locate-destroy the nearest person! Not many games can match the level of intensity in QUAKE 3 Deathmatch.

The graphics are indeed quite stunning. id Software's QUAKE 3 engine is still, I think, the best out there. Other game engines have come close, but the QUAKE 3 engine still is a thing of beauty.

If your a regular FPS fan, then by all means get this game! It is a must own for all FPS fans. I don't recommend QUAKE 3 if you are more into teamplay. But if you like Deathmatch, QUAKE 3 is the undisputed, undefeated king.

q3a has to be the worst nighmare for the story seeking firstperson-actiongamers.but. wait a sec ihave been enjoying storys in games but they always seemed to take to much time so ...no - story is some times better than with storys,quake3 this game is simple! "frag any thing that is in your way" not many maps to play with but worth fighting for . the simplicity makes this game the finest .as the level goes up from the "bring it on " to the "hard core" you will be sweating , soaked and drowning in your sweat. every quakers have things in common "perfection ""mastery" and "checking how fresh the meat is" .so go frag 'em!...

conclusion=gordon freeman starts to look like a geek who likesto wear tights.(i have bought mission pack and counterstrike dont say i'm a twisted individual_halflife is good)..

It run s with out the cd (1.27patch required) 500MB OF STORAGE if you have already installed the demo you will see some performance drop of 10~15% in the full retail version.(dont know why)....

i recommand smooth and precise 3button or wheel mouse.(mousepad required) 3dfx voodoo 3000 (for glide) + wicked gl +bit of overclocking nvidia riva tnt2 and theirgeforce family runs fine but open gl(none glide)users must have higher clock pentium chip set 3dfx...p2_celeron tnt,geforce...p3 so if your going to buy a new graphics adater think about it. (voodoo4,5 are only supported in opengl mode _no glide_sorta like tnt&geforce .better off buying nvidia.) if you have cable asdl connection you could become a internet warrior. soon i'm going to buy a linux version (for server)because indipendant external q3server boosts playing performance for those who have slow to medium pc. and i'm going to buy q3teamarena for windows

HEY GO CHECK , IF THE MEAT IS FRESH , FRAG.

Q3: A - The Leader of Online Deathmatch!

Throughout the years ID Software has blessed with their revolutionary series of FPS games, Quake, and Quake 3: Arena has no problem living up to it's standards (and thoughs of the earlier releases). The engine ID has developed not only amounts what today's technolgy can amount to, it surpases them by allowing fluid colored textures, stylish characer animations, and detailed deathmatches.

By now you must know the story: your plotted into the middle of battle, appropriatly entitled the "Arena Eternal," a series of large constructs biult to bring you to an untimely (and sometimes rather gory) demise. It seems as though the plot isn't supposed to be the highlight of the game, but rather easy access to the internet, were you can "FRAG AWAY," is the more important aspect. Unlike Quake 3's rival, Unreal Tournament, it's engine is alot more assisable with lower quality video cards. I even has the oppurtunity to test it on a Voodoo Banshee, a 3D accelerator outdated by years of other Voodoo releases, and the game still performed fine. Nowadays I can play with the a much greater advantage - GeForce 2 Ultra technology. All this while UT's engine has had some rather discourages functionallity bugs with most Nvidia cards.

So, why did I give Quake 3: Arena 4 stars instead of 5? Mianly becuase of the system requirements. As I said before, it still runs on older 3D accelerators, but everything from sound to texture quality must be brought down to get it to work smoothly. Other than that, everything was setup nicely. The interface is simple, allowing you to join forcess with other Gladiators over LAN or internet connection simply and quickly, and over 30 player models are available for you. Enough arenas are here were you can play through one, and another, and another, and you still feel as though you haven't exactly played all the way through.

Speeking of arenas, the level design is extravagant. Curved surfaces, only allowable though Q3's own technology, has constructed massive environments filled with realistic lighting and volumetric fog. By far it has ruled over any game in level design!

The sound and music is another highlight, with ambient sounds and pounding techno-beats.

OVERALL: pick this one up whether your a fan of the Quake series or not!

Awsome!

This game has amazing visuals, that are some of the best ive ever seen. The only reason i gave this game 4 stars is because the single player is so short, that you will be done with it in about 2 hours of playing. The multiplayer is amazing though. I feel that it is even better than UT's multiplayer. If you like frags then get this game

Awesome! ID did it again!

Even though this game lacks some game play features, level designs, and weapon variaties, it's still a cool game! Best graphics ever, cool level designs; even though unoriginal, and great deathmatch play... This game worths 50 stars!

Quake 3 Arena is one of the best games ever. The deathmatching it offers cant be beat. Even though it only offers few gameplay modes, it is much better than any other game on the market.
