the missions are different every time you accept them...

... GTA3 is a game where you can do anything you want at any given point in time. It's possible to hi-jack anything with wheels, including fire engines, Hummers, FBI cars, small planes, and the most fun of all a tank that fires! All of which can be stored in your garage to SAVE and for safe keeping. GTA3 uses professional voice overs so the characters won't dull your senses on how they sound.

When i mean do anything you want, I MEAN YOU CAN DO ANYTHING YOU WANT. It's possible to stand on some elses car as you go on your own little rampage, as they drive around. The people reactions to you if you hold a gun up to them are quite realistic. If you held a gun up to a member of the mafia gang, then they become surprised and might say "don't shoot", and they'll start shooting at you because you're so over confident and haven't fired yet. It's hard to believe but little things like this will suck you dry of any time you have laying around.

For every mission you accept, the way you complete it will always be different. It depends on what route you take, what gun you use, what car (if any) you use, and how much life you're willing to lose. But in the end you recieve the same amount of pay for every mission. (some missions give extra bonus pay).

I recommend this game for adults only, becuase of the realism and gore.

Great game, but technically frustrating for PC

I got hooked on the PS2 version of this game during the semester and had to buy it so I could get my GTA3 fix over the summer. As a game, I can't say anything about GTA3 that hasn't been already said. It's incredibly immersive and just plain nice to look at. Anyone who enjoyed "Goodfellas" or "Pulp Fiction" would love this gaming experience. There are some additional perks to the PC version. The load up speed is rediculous . . . I haven't waited more than 2 seconds for a saved game to load. The mp3 player and replay are fun gimmicks.

I am disappointed with the huge system requirements of the PC port. I have a Pent4 1.3gHz, 384MB, 32MB GeForce2 (all at or well above recommended specs). To make the game playable, I have to turn the res all the way down, turn off all programs running in the background, etc. I've updated my system, reformatted, and it hasn't fixed anything. In time-dependent missions, the shaky performance is a killer.

I definitely recommend this game as long as you have the system to run it smoothly.

The game that lets you do what you've always secretly wanted

Grand Theft Auto III (GTA3) is the PC Version of one of the most successful games ever released for the Sony Playstation 2. GTA3 begins with a small introduction about your character's botched robbery and his subsequent escape from prison. After crawling out of a burning prison transport, your character and another inmate steal a car and hook up with your partner's crime friends. From there, your character is free to pursue a prison-free life of crime.

I never played the previous GTAs for the PC nor GTA3 on the Sony Playstation 2 so I can only tell you about this game from the viewpoint of someone who is completely new to the GTA series and my opinion is very high. This is one of the most addictive games I've played in years. Who knew jacking cars, selling narcotics and carrying out hits could be so fun? Your character is allowed to steal any car or take out any pedestrian in GTA3 and it almost makes me feel guilty that I find this game so entertaining.

If you already own GTA3 on the Playstation 2, I wouldn't recommend purchasing the PC version as it is a duplicate with enhanced graphics for the PC. Probably the only options for GTA3 on the PC not available for the Playstation are the abilities to put in your own skins for your main character thus making him look like whomever you want and copying your own MP3 files into the game to make your own custom radio station when driving a car.

One of the only complaints I have about GTA3 is sometimes it feels like a console game. It almost feels like it would run smoother with a console controller and although I have a Microsoft Sidewinder controller hooked up to my PC, it doesn't run that well because the camera angle can only be controlled by keyboards when walking around town. (It works fine when driving though.). I haven't played console games in a while so it was obvious to me how the game was designed to run on a console with repetitive quests that were timed or other common elements I remember from consoles games I have played. The repetitive game play makes the game boring quicker than usual but you'll have a great time for the first few days.

ACTION FANS - 4 STARS - This is one of few games that is not a first person shooter that I would recommend for PC action gaming fans. The stunt driving that the game allows you to perform in corvettes, hummers, 18-wheelers, luxury cars, etc. are loads of fast-paced fun.

STRATEGY FANS - 1 STAR - Not much strategy is involved in GTA3. Some of the tasks require a little planning to complete them but most of it is trial by error.

ADVENTURE/RPG FANS - 3 STARS - There are some great stories in GTA3. Your character joins every crime faction from the Mafia to the Yakuza and fun short clips are involved in each mission you are sent on. As the game goes on, you are allowed more access to powerful weapons. Not a true RPG in any sense but a fun turn from the usual.

X FACTOR - PS2 to PC TRANSFER - 2 STARS - I've already mentioned the additional options included in the PC version. It's a smooth transfer but there was so much more they could have included for a fun game like this. If an editor had come with the game, there would be a huge online fan community.

BUGS - 5 STARS - I didn't experience one crash or freeze. I've heard a lot of gripes about the system performances with this game, more than most games, but I have an average system at best and didn't experience any problems. Some of the complaints may arise from the fact that this game brings in a lot of fans of the Playstation version who are maybe not familiar with the maintenance needed on a PC to make games run smoothly.

REPLAY VALUE - 2 STARS - It's fun to replay some of the missions but because of the repetitive nature of the game, once it's done there really isn't much left. If the developers had released some kind of editing software, this game would have a huge replay advantage because you can guarantee that a game this thrilling would bring forth plenty of MODs.

The most freedom you can have in a videogame today!

Okay, first of all, this game is a VERY violent game, and i would NOT recommend parents to buy it for children under 13. You must also make sure that they know the violence and crime is FAKE. There will be serious consequences for doing these things in real life, and they know not to do what they do in this game. Back to the game, this is simply, hands down, the best game ever created. It is an innovation within an innovaton. The storyline is excellent, as you get betrayed and shot by your friend during a bank robbery. Later, you must work your way through the dark streets of Liberty City, working your way toward the ones who betrayed you. The missions never repeat themselves, and they are always fun and challenging. BUT, you WILL NOT be able to beat this game without codes, and i do not know anyone who did. So i strongly advise you get the codes before playing. Other than that, the sense of freedom this game gives you in between and after all of the missions is astounding. You can go almost anywhere, and do almost anything, something never before acheived in a video game.

Gameplay- 5+- Extremely fun and addictive, especially when you have a group of your friends around you to see your crazy runs from the law and laugh as you drive your car off a cliff into the ocean (nothing beats the feeling when you watch your friend do the same thing).

Sound- 5- The radio stations are great, especially game fm. The commercials are extremely hilarious, and you can even make your own custom radio station with your own tunes.

Graphics- 4- Allright, but could be better.

Storyline- 5- Great story, very fun missions.

I really have to congratulate rockstar with their acheivment in the video game industry. Great job guys. As for the people reading this, if this game is on its way to your house right now, click the buy button above. Bottom line- WOW!

Any less then 5 stars would be criminal!

I couldn't decide what to write first.

Thats how awesome this game is.

Out of my 10+ years of PC Gaming I've seen alot of games come and alot of games go. Out of all of them, GTA III is one of the best (if not the best) "Street Life/Hitman for Hire" games that I have ever played. (And I've played alot).

I don't know what to write first. The graphics, even by todays standards are still very good. Almost every aspect of game play has been perfected, and there is virtually no limit as to how many hours you can play this game. Considering that I never play the same game for more then a month or so, it has taken me about 5 months of on and off play to complete the story to this masterpiece. After completeing the game I viewed the "Statistics" and it said the game was only 46% done. That is because there are so many sub-missions throughout the game.

I think it would be fair to match the amount of missions in this game to the amount of tasks to complete in the game "Black & White". There are ALOT.

As far as actual gameplay goes; it is completely action packed, but not without realism. Each car in the game has their own handling characteristics. Each gun has its own pros and cons. You get a real sence how it feels to graduate from being a street thug for hire to a known and feared hitman - or "part of the family" (In the Mafia).

The nice thing about this game is that it doesn't focus on just one sect of organized crime. You'll encounter everything from the Jamaican "possie" to Columbian drug dealers, to lower level street gangs, to the well organized sydicate of China Town, even the Italian Mafia seems to be well active in Liberty City.

The sound in the game, is like everything else, supurb. With a good selection of radio stations, you'll be jamming to the beat all throughout the game! They even have a special radio station for your own MP3's!

Yeah, this game is...awesome

The Good: Supurb Sound and Visual Affects; Never ending gameplay; diverse missions.

The Bad: No Multiplay; some clipping.

The Ugly (Bottom Line): This game is one of the best. Anyone who rates this less then a five star game is wack.

Hey,

You can play the the mission with way better graphics than the console game gives you. You get to put in your own MP3s, so you can run a muck in the city to Beethoven, Notorious BIG, or Zepplin. What more can you ask for???

Well how about some new skins for your charachter and the cars?? They are available if you know where to look. (Belive me it's not hard to find)

Now when I started playing this, I thought to myself, no way do I want to play this with a keyboard. But low and behold I never got a chance to find the right gamepad for me.(I'm difficult that way) So I ended up passing the game with the keyboard and belive me for most of the game my fingers got use to the positions and I was able to do some slick moves.

Now you want to make sure that your PC can handle this game so read the requirements. I am way above the recommended one so I am a little biased. My game play was smooth!

Anyway, my rating is "all good".

If your thinking about getting it, stop thinking and purchase it.

one of the best games i've ever played.

This review is going to be short as I want to get back to playing this game!

I just have to say that this game is amazing! The amount of effort put into this game by the developers is unbelievable and far exceeds the norm.

The city is an interactive virtual world that feels real down to every single detail. Pedestrians act realistically when you start causing mayhem. Point your gun at one of them and each person's reaction is even mixed from running or standing still and holding their hands up. Fire hydrants explode when you run over them. Drive by a hooker in a nice car and they'll jump in--ready for some action in a secluded place. Cars stop at stoplights. Streetgangs attack each other.

What really makes everything work is the beautiful graphics and the enormity of the game world. You can easily spend hours driving around town admiring all the details. The city looks as realistic as any major city. You have the slums, nice condos, airport, parks, docks, quickie marts, overpasses, laundry stores, overpasses, freeway tunnels. Everything is there. Best of all the loading times are virtually non-existant when driving through the city. The suspension of disbelief will not be interrupted by long pauses or loading times.

I haven't even discussed gameplay which is a blast. You can play the traditional story-based missions or complete various other missions from stealing a cab and driving people around to jacking certain types of vehicles to be whisked away on a ship. Perhaps you'd want to play an innocent obstacle course challenge or maybe a much more violent rampage one. There is just so much to do here.

I'm addicted to this game. All I have to say is to try it out and you'll see what an amazing game this is.

I wasn't a fan of the other GTA's because while the theory and atmosphere were OK, the gameplay really blew and the graphics were just too awkward for me. However, GTA3 has changed all that. Not only has it changed it's own format for the better, it has revolutionized gameplay as we know it in a 3rd person format. A perfect combination of story, ambiance, graphics, gameplay and post-end gameplay make this game really worth the [money]. Here are a few reasons why this game is so worth it:

Reason 1: The world that they have created is immense. You are playing on three islands that are filled with tons of city streets, city folk walking around and gang members getting into trouble. While you don't really enter any of the buildings (during the ACTUAL gameplay) the sights and sound of the city are so incredible that you really get immersed in the game. Every car is jackable, everyone is robbable and every cop is watching YOU.... This is not even considering the mission based sections which I'll touch on now.

Reason 2: The story is actually well written. You basically start out as a thug who gets broken out of prison and hooks up with other gangs to stay alive and make money. That's a pretty brief description but it touches the theme. Throughout the game you do little "jobs" for the various rulers of the city. As time passes you get more trusted, backstabbed and launched up the money ranks until the very end where you fight the ultimate crime sindicate. No spoilers...you have to see for yourself.

Reason 3: The gameplay is very intuitive. It took me about an hour to pickup the basic gameplay while on foot AND while in a car. Once you learn the basics you get better at smokin' thugs .... One of the great things that I noticed is that the further you get into the game, the better your "character" becomes at running, driving and avoiding being hit by bullets. Example: at the beginning of the game you can walk, jog and run for about 2-3 seconds before you get really tired and are slowed to a jog again. By the end of the game I was straight running for a full minute before I got tired. Very cool. Same went for the cars. I didn't notice it because I was so used to playing. But when I started a new game after beating it I couldn't handle cars as well as I did in my other game. Brilliant!

Reason 4: The ambiance is amazing. Every character walking around will utter something that fits their personality. Granted, after about 20 hours into it you've heard it all, but there's enough of it to not get bored. The cops scream at you to get down and all that cop jazz. Pimps proposition you to check out their "merchandise" .... This is actually seconded by the radio in this game. When you are in cars you have the option to listen to about 6-7 different stations ranging from Rap to Classical. There's even a talk station. All in all I think this game has about 60 hours of original programming, but don't quote me on that. The music is actually really good. AND OH...they actually use the Scarface soundtrack for their "80's" station. It's hilarious and absolutely perfect!

Like I said, even though this is a long review, it only touches on the fun I've had playing this game. While the subject matter is completely lacking of humanity and has caused a uprising with the moral majority, there is a reason why this game is considered the best console game made yet. Because it's straight up fun to steal a cab, kill the ex-driver with your uzi and start making money taking fares around the city. AND once the fare is complete...you can kill the passenger and take their money. Oh yeah...and when the cops chase you because they witnessed you do this, you have a blast avoiding the squad cars as you race to your neighborhood chop shop to get "hidden". Yes, you can do that. I'm going to stop writing and go play some more. I've beaten this game twice and it's STILL not old. If you buy a PS2, you have to buy this game. You won't regret it.

Vast improvement over the first two GTA games.

Having played GTA and GTA2 for PlayStation, I was pretty skeptical about the whole Grand Theft Auto series. The first two games had attitude to spare and nice details, but the gameplay was sloppy thanks to an ill-conceived control scheme, slowdown was constant (the result of trying to do too many things onscreen), the savegame system was abysmal, and the missions were often too hard (not helped by the controls).

GTA3, happy to say, improves on many crucial points. First of all, the versatility of a keyboard (on the PC version I bought, at least) means that there is now much more control over the camera angles. The overhead angle of GTA and GTA2 is now only one of many available options, and the availability of this option makes gameplay a whole lot easier. I still don't totally dig the way the camera would sometimes end up in awkward positions for controlling your car, but the camera problems of GTA3 are minor compared to, say, Tomb Raider. Unfortunately, either because of too much design detail or the capacity of my computer, slowdown on my copy of the game is really prominent. My computer was able to play Medal of Honor: Allied Assault without any problems, and that game had atmosphere and details enough, so I can't help thinking perhaps GTA3 put in a little too much candy for the ears and eyes at the expense of control and smoothness. I wish they could have built in some more display and audio options to help smooth out game operation; I personally wouldn't have minded not having so much weather and lighting detail, or being able to turn off the car radio, so I can play the game more smoothly. If the slowdowns could have been alleviated, the control scheme and response of GTA3 positively demolishes that of GTA and GTA2.

One big plus is that the story elements have been greatly improved. You now have a much more comprehensible storyline to flesh out your adventures (though you can still play the game non-linearly if you want to); the character design and voice work now have oodles more personality, making it much easier to recognize one character from another. The missions have been improved as well; though the technical problems above prevented me from playing some of the missions (El Burro's city race, for example), the learning curve and difficulty are now much more reasonable, making for a more enjoyable gaming experience.

I have one major complaint: The save-game system. Why make it such a hassle to save your progress? I don't mind replaying missions, but to have to return to your safehouse, go visit the boss again, get the same mission, then attempt to finish the mission time after time is a major drag. I don't understand why the designers are so jittery about letting players save within the game. At the very least, how about a checkpoint system so long missions don't have to be played all the way through over and over?

I like this game, but I have enough gripes to make my experience a mixed one. I can only hope GTA4, whenever it may arrive, would make as many improvements on GTA3 as GTA3 did on its predecessors, especially in the crucial gameplay and control fronts.

Takes GTA2 to the logical next level

This game has been an absolute joy to play (even as I curse while my jacked car flips over as I head off a cliff). The graphics are well done - I really feel as if I am a part of a small city. The physics of driving, in my opinion, are pretty good - the cars handle as you might expect, with speedy, agile sports cars and sturdy, slow delivery trucks. The missions are enticing - I find myself constantly telling myself, "Okay, just one more mission... one more mission...then I can go to sleep." I'd highly recommend purchasing any game this addictive and well written.

XP users - fear not. If your game starts with solid blocks where text should be, get the patch that is linked from several of the GTA3 fan Web sites... it's pretty easy to find. Additionally, if you have a decent video card (I've got a GeForce 3 Ti200), turn off the trails feature (I think that's what it's called). The game will look much cleaner. Finally, finish many of the package collections, unique jumps, rampages, taxi runs, ambulance runs, fire missions and vigilante missions before you do the hired missions. Otherwise, they'll be more difficult because some of the gangs (for example, the Triads in Portland City) will be extremely angry with you and try to kill you as you do these side missions.

Of course, this has been a Random opinion. :)
