It didn't fall far from the tree

Like a lot of you other people, I was waiting to see if they'd ever come up with a 3D version of GTA. Of course, they did. The greatest thing about GTA3 I like is the fact that they didn't stray too far from the concept of the 1st 2 original games. Meaning, you follow the same rules as the 1st two, and expect pretty much the same circumstances. I actually give this game a 4 1/2 for a few reasons. First, when touch water, no matter how deep, you lose life. That [is bad], but I guess it's important to focus on gameplay instead of swimming. Second, gameplay is *somewhat* linear, meaning, you have to follow a set path in order to advance in the game. It does branch out a bit, but you end up on the same road. The game does differ slightly from the originals (besides it being in 3D). Car bombs are only activated after you start the engine, and if you screw up a mission, you have the chance to do it again. Trust me, these do not affect gameplay, it's addictive as [heck] with an exellent idea. Go out, buy it, and have a ball. I'm gonna wait for it to come out on computer, because that involves add-ons and other cool [stuff]. But the Platform versions still are exellent. Have a day.

Only minor glitches, great concept

You can pretty much sum the game up in one word: fun. Prepare to lose some sleep. There are few games that give you this much freedom to do pretty much whatever you want. Although the missions in the beginning are very very easy, as you progress in the game they will become much more difficult and interesting.

I've read some of the other reviews, and there are a lot of complaints about performance. I have a 1.4 GHz Athlon, GeForce4 MX 440, and 512 MB of RAM on Windows 2000, a system that won't exactly knock your socks off with performance, but I had no problem with the game crashing and get excellent frame rates on 1024x768x32. If you have only 128 or 256 MB of memory, you should terminate all your background tasks, otherwise it'll be accessing the hard disk too much and that will slow you down a lot. Otherwise get DirectX 8.1 and download the latest drivers for your video card. If you're still using a Voodoo or a GeForce2 then it's obviously time to acquire some newer technology, so you may be out of luck.

Where's The Plot?

I know there is a lot of hype for this game. The new GTAIII Vice City is supposed to be another hit with newer cars and things of that nature. But Aside from all the killing and blowing up stuff, is there really anything else that captures the immagination in this game? I've seen friends play this over and over again saying how great it is. So I get it and play it. After 20 min of missions of killing things and blowing stuff up with practically no sense of purpose and any form of variety in the missions, I had to uninstall this game. Its horrible!!! If you love games where its mindless killing (filled with great codes I should add), then go for it. But If you need a plot with an actual challenge that stimulates the mind, then you might want to go another route.

This is going to be great

Probably 70 percent of the people reading this review have played GTA3 on the ps2. Many people enjoyed the game, but I was am a little picky. Basicly, I like graphics, and if a game has good graphics, and it has good gameplay, I will play it (unless if it is like a sim game). I found GTA3's gameplay incredible, but the graphics engine did not take advantage of the PS2's rendering power. GTA and GTA2 have both been better for the pc, and I will not be surprised if GTA3 is a heck of a lot better on the PC than the PS2.

Obviously, GTA3 is not for kids, but here is the story, or atleast as most as I know of it. I think it has to do with some sort of a mob, or gang, or mafia or something, and you have to go on these missions for them, and you will be a "made man". These missions include jacking a grandma on the street, killing a pimp, or maybe bombing a few buildings. You can never forget to kill people on the street, or blow up 10 police cars, or even get the cheat code for the tank and cause destruction in the city.

You've heard my opinion, and you obviously know that I would give GTA3 for the PS2 four stars. I am giving it 5 stars for the pc because it will have the excelent gameplay, along with improved graphics and performance. Hope this helps!

Grand Theft Auto III has some of the best graphics I have seen in a long time. The view of the game is great, and gives you more freedom to look around. The cars and guns in this game are awesome! I wouldn't reccommend this game for anyone younger than 13, because it has some adult content in it. Overall this is the best game I have ever played!

My computer is a 864 MHZ, with a Pentium 3 processor, with 15 GB free disk space and 128 MB RAM and this game works GREAT! In the beginning the game speed was very choppy but i called up their technical support and they gave my quick advice and now it is great. No more waiting for it to load or anything. I even have the older NVIDIA display chip, the NVIDIA GeForce 256 and all that i did is i went to NVIDIA.com and downloaded a newer version and now the game is great. If anyone is having trouble running their GTA3 on their computer, and your computer has at least the recommended reguirements, then you should just call up the tech support and ask them what to do. They will give you some instructions and help you out.

Have fun!

I finally make it ! 27FPS @1024 x 768 x 32bit with my GF2 MX

Yes, I just make it so fast and never feel so good with my GF2 MX400 to play GTA3. Just few days ago,
like some gamers I met here that we all complain why GTA3 runs so slow with GF2 MX. I believe a number
of gamers like me just have GF2 MX but can run GTA3 at poor FPS and only at 640 x 480 x 16 bit. My comp is
D700Mhz(oc 850Mhz),256Ram,MSI K7TPro,MSI Starforce Geforce2 Mx 32M SDRM. I was almost out when I could
not play GTA3 but my comp can run very fast for almost all other recent FPS games and never drops to
a hell resolution at 640x480 ( Duke Nukem ?). But things does change dramatically after I did these,

1. Download and install the newest detonator driver v.29.42 (...). It was released in last
month and most optimized for DX8.1. After I install this, my MSI Starforce Geforece 2 Mx becomes to
Nvidia GF2 MX400 !!! ( If you haven't installed DX8.1 in your comp, then install it !!!)

2. Right click desktop, and click "property" of the popup menu to bring up "Display Property" dialog
box, click "Setting" label, click "Advance settings", you can see there is a new label named " GF2 MX
/MX400". Click the "property" on this label, and click "D3D setting". In the "MIP texture" options,
choose "high performance" and click OK.

3. Download and install patch v1.1 (June 28) for GTA3. ( ...)

4. Download and install an inofficial patch for GTA3 known as "HFPS v5.1". It can improve FPS by removing
rain, seagull, leaf and newpapers on the ground and many other un-noticeable things and it works very good
on my comp to gear up the speed. ( ... Thank you so much Sheepy, for creating such a wonderful patch !!! )

5. Run GTA3 (close all applications as far as you can find before run the game, and the better run defrag
before you play), and go to "display setup" and now you can find the default resolution is up to 720 x 576
x 16bit !! Change it to 1024 x 768 x 32 bit (use your mousewheel to adjust) and turn off "Trails" effect !!

6. Play and enjoy !!! I love GTA3 and love my GF2 (too) !!

I am sure your FPS can be up to 25 frames/s now !!

The four PC games I ever love the most : Duke Nukem, Half-Life, Mark Payne, and now GTA3 !
The game I most expect : Duke Nukem for ever, but never comes.

Be the thug...

I enjoyed playing Grand Theft Auto 3, and have since moved on to GTA: Vice City, the game which suceeded it.

GRAPHICS: If you have a top-of-the-line graphics card, the game's quality is so-so. Before you buy, remember that GTA3 needs 8 megabytes of video memory, and I cannot play the game on my relatively new computer now because this is used up very quickly.

CHALLENGE: This is a difficult game if you don't use cheats, which most people do. The missions must be done a certain way, and often you will get lost not knowing what to do. Mind you, you want some difficulty don't you?

FUN: Good enjoyment value. What could be better than driving around shooting people for no apparent reason?

STORYLINE: Pretty poor, a gangster looking for revenge after being betrayed, but he never really gets it!

ORIGINALITY: Odd-job guy, works for the highest bidder and does anything without really thinking twice. Wow, breaking gorund there.

VALUE: GTA3 has long life value, as you can go around collecting hidden packages or being a cabbie on the side, so as adding a few hours more to the experience. Once you finish the missions, you could always try and do it again without cheats (you won't be able to resist the first time).

MUSIC: Fantastic range of buolt-in radio stations, plus the option of including your own MP3 collection for personalised listening while on a job.

OVERALL: Good game, with the best thing being the gamepay and the worst being the poor graphics. Gets broing after the first time you beat it, but all-in-all GTA3 is a modern PC classic and well worth the price.

The GTA series is the best games ever created, the freedom to do what ever you want, take out gangs with a rocket launcher, toss a nade into heavy populated areas, kill the police and take their cars, put out fires and earn money, beat up civilians and take their money, help mob bosses, pick up hookers with a taxi and drop them off, hack people to death with a chainsaw, own mansions and other properties, fly on a jetpack, kill army soldiers and take their tanks and jets, listen to radio stations and humorous radio talk shows and ads like pogo the monkey. just the best games ever created.

This game is proof that all Rockstar games did was rush the PS2 version to the PC without giving any thought to compatibility issues. I would pay money to see anyone at Rockstar games get GTA3 to run smoothly on a system with a PIII 450 processor, 96 megs of ram and a 16 meg video card. It cant be done. However those are the specs Rockstar issues on the box as the minimum required, and that is an indictment of Rockstar Games. This game cant run smoothly on any system, regardless of the specs. Rockstar never tested this game period. The options menu is a joke. You cant control the number of channels your sound card uses. You cant control the color-depth or filtering methods. You cant control lighting quality, you cant control anything that would make GTA3 run smoothly on your system. You can turn the trails off, however you'll still see trails in the game - i.e - it does not work. Way to go Rockstar. The only thing you can do is elect to play this game at 640 by 480 by 16 resolution, and the game still lags and suffers from slow FPS. That is simply unacceptable. Rockstar's answer to all the choppy play and slowdowns was to issue a patch which allows you to play all audio from the hard drive vs the CD drive; allowing for a small increase in speed, and I do mean SMALL INCREASE. However, get this, you have to do all the work. You have to manually copy all your audio files from the CD to the hard drive. GTA3 should still be in production, pending release sometime in the Fall 2002 or Winter of 2003. This would have allowed its programmers time to adequately tune the game for PC.., instead of handing out a box of trash.

Take my advice stay away from this game until Rockstar gets it right
