runs bad on geforce 2 mx400?

2 Rating: 2, Useful: 3 / 9

yeah yeah. we have all heard and agreed that gta3 is a fun game to play. but one other reviewer said it runs bad on his system. he said he has a geforce 2 mx400 on an athlon xp2000 (equivelent of p4 1.7 ghz.) my computer is a p3 1 ghz with an mx400 too. i can run unreal tournament at 1600x1200 resolution, an with all the other performance eathing stuff at over 80 frames a second.
one or more of the following can be true.

1. the guy that wrote the other review is lying (not very likely)
2. he is running gta3 on XP or 2000, which all eat up performance, so stick with windows 98.
3. the makers of gta3 were very rushed to release the pc version, so they gave it a crappy, inefficient graphics engine.
(i think most likely)

if number three is correct, which it probably is, do not buy GTA3 because only really expensive computers can run it well.
if you really want to play gta3, get it on ps2.

This game lets me do all those things I have been fiending to do since video games came into my life. I wanted to be able to do whatever I wanted, including heinously violent acts and all that stuff. To be blunt, how this game got such universal acclaim is beyond me. It's a fun game, for the first 10 minutes. Wow, I just shot an old lady, here comes the ambulance, oh wow I got in the ambulance and ran over the paramedics, I didn't even crack a sadistic smile. The critics said its like playing a video game version of Goodfellas, I'm sorry but thats a little off. There isn't any weight to the violence, its just random slaughter, which isn't really all that funny or original. Rockstar Games originally defended their Grand Theft Auto games by saying the violence is cartoonish, I don't know how they defend this, because its obvious this is the game they really wanted out of the other games. Anyway, I really wanted to love this game, but shock value does not a good game make. ...

bugggy!

I bought this game thinking that it looked good, I tried playing it on my 933mhz windows 98 and it kept freezing up. the sound was awful, although you can change the music during gameplay which was a cool feature, the music stinks! The gameplay consisted of mindless violence that went nowhere! No plot, no story. The game had a couple of buggs that Rockstar should have wored out before marketing this one. I would not buy it again if I had a choice. Buy Max Payne instead, now that game Rocks!

Is our culture in decline? This game suggests an answer.

About 25 years ago, director David Cronenberg was asked if he thought his grandchildren would enjoy his movies. He replied, "I doubt if I will even recognize my grandchildren as human beings." He was referring to the speed with which communication technologies were changing our values. The popularity of Grand Theft Auto underscores his prescience. This game bears out the notion that innocence is a thing of the past in our culture, even for children. (And PLEASE don't tell me this game isn't directed at adolescent boys.) Violence has a place in entertainment if it's depicted honestly, not gratuitously as it is in GTA-3. Those who suggest that pandering to the darkest male adolescent fantasies has no consequences probably think gansta rap is harmless self-expression, too. I suggest they read the newspapers.

Not for Windows XP

Grand Theft Auto 3 is one of the greatest games of all time. I played it on the PS2 and my friends computer. I don't have a PS2, but I didn't mind using the keyboard on my friends computer, so I had him burn it for me. Now for the reason I ended up giving a great game 2 stars... The first thing I noticed as soon as I got in the car at the beginning was enormous lag. Another problem was the fact that I'd be driving, hit something I couldn't see, then 3 seconds after I hit it a pole or planter would appear. These two things bugged the hell out of me throughout the game. I downloaded every patch and fix imaginable and none of them worked. I later found out that most everybody I read about on message boards with Windows XP experienced the same problems. It made me so mad that I wasn't getting the full experience from an awesome game that I soon after traded my... Xbox for a PS2. I did this a few days ago and got three games with it, but still haven't gotten a memory card or GTA3. Let's assume you don't have Windows XP and talk about the game: GTA3 is innovative and great fun. It is full of humor, hilarious radio stations, nice cars, prostitutes, fiendish weapons, [foolish] police, and cool cutscenes. It has a good storyline with nice plot twists. This is a must-buy!

OK game...not a worthy successor to the GTA title

I was a huge fan of the original GTA. In the same way that Pac Man and Tetris are the sorts of games wherein the fun never ends, GTA excelled. GTA2 went downhill a bit, and with GTA3 the fun is lost.

This isn't to say that GTA3 is not a great game--it is. The graphics, sound, gameplay, everything is nearly perfect. There is hardly a thing in the game that is not exceedingly realistic.

That, however, is what I don't particularly like about the game. GTA1 was great because of its cartoonish wit and simplicity. In multiplayer mode especially, the winner was the person who was the most skilled. As the series has moved along, however, it has become more about who finds the biggest weapon. Cars break down too easily and don't handle well enough. The police are too smart. Pedestrians are few and far between. Simply put, the details are so good that it makes the gameplay much more difficult and, for me, removes a lot of the pure joy of playing the game--not to mention the un-PC tongue-in-cheekiness of the original, and even GTA2.

This is a great game for people who love first person shooter games, people who get off on beating people with baseball bats, and anyone who likes slick-looking and -playing computer games. Fans of the GTA series from way back might be disappointed, however. I'm sticking to the original.

Just plain overrated

Grand Theft Auto is full of potential, but gives way to dumb missions and almost too real violence.

The game offers missions where you can earn money. Between missions, you can wonder around and kill people for money. Nothing all that original here, but the game is well done and the scenery very good.

Gameplay was fine on my P4 2.53. Cars and trucks were realistic, visualizations where well done.

That's where the fun stopped for me. Some missions take a while and many tries to complete. Because the game lacks a decent save feature, you waste a ton of time. This gets really dull after the fourth and fifth tries.

I have no real problem with violence. Games like Doom and Unreal were fun because of the cool weapons and the weird monsters. For me, GTA takes it to a too real place - killing humans on the street for fun. The missions were fine, but the random killing of hundreds of people for money got old quick. For some reason, I'd rather kill fake monsters than things that are very close to people.

Overall, decent but overrated. Feels like a PS2 game, is a PS2 game. I expect a better story and more fun out of a PC game.

One of *the* best games of all time...

I'd like to start off by saying that turning off that "trails" feature has made me love the game more than I already had. Thanks for that tip. On to the review. There's no other word to describe this game other than 'revolutionary'. I've got to say that I've spent more gaming hours playing this game than any other. I'm running an Athlon XP 1800+ and a GeForce4 with 512 MB RAM and the game runs perfectly. I don't see how one can judge a game based on the way it runs on their system. Obviously, newer games will require more power due to more realistic environements and giving it a 3/5 stars because of an outdated system is pretty dumb.

Awesome game!!

When I first put ths game in my Playstation, I had a few expectations, things I had heard from my friends about this game and Vice City as well (another great game, but not as good as this one). The freedom is enormous. You can take missions from the local Italian Mafia or the Japanease Yakuza, you can [take] a taxi, fire truck, or other emergancy vehicle and make a bit of extra cash, or you take your flamethrower and walk up to a big crowd and, well, I'll let you imagine the fun you can have. Heh heh heh! The game itself it for the most part easy, but there are some extras that will test your sanity a bit (ambulance missions, aghhh!). All in all, an absolutly awesome game.

A truly brilliant game

The single best facet of this game is that you can go anywhere and do anything. Want to play cabbie? Just jack a taxi and start carting passengers around (On a side note, the taxis are the most fun to drive). Want to drive around causing general mayhem? You an do that too. There are so many opportunities to make money or have some hilarious fun. Another really cool thing is the mp3 player. For once I get to choose the music! A definite must buy for anyone.
