WONDERFUL!!!

I've only breifly played this game on Playstation 2, and it's one of the best I've ever played!
It brings so much more to the experience that is GTA than the older games, let's just hope that the PC version will be as good as the PS2 version.
You can chose from a few different angles, including the classic GTA angle, but it feels as though it's ment to be played in the new, street level angle.
It's more violent that GTA1 and 2, with lots of blood, and you can even kick people (...) in it. The violence feels kind of more real, since you get to view it from the street level. But that dosent bother me, GTA is ment to be violent, and ment to raise discussions on PTA meetings.

This is the best ... game ive ever played!!!

I have only one word for this game- FANTASTIC. ive been playing video games ever since i could hold a controller and ive been a huge fan of all the GTA series and i still play them becuase of thier gameplay and plots to them they are just genuis, then Rockstar and DMA come along with the 3rd sequel and this blows away my mind at everything you can do in this game and the whole Liberty City is amazing, they couldnt have made a better game, this game would be the only reason id buy a PS2(and for Max Payne-another Rockstar game)those guys at rockstar are genuises, they know what the poeple want and they delvier with full force.

Fun, but heavily flawed game

GTA3 was easily the most hyped game around. Is it good? Yes. Is it worthy of the hype? I don't think so. GTA3's only real problems are mostly small, but there are so many it is impossible to ignore.

Gameplay 3/5
Missions are varied and fun, but the terrible saving system makes redoing missions involving a lot of traveling and work very repetitive and frusterating. Exploring the city in the beginning isn't anywhere near as fun as it could have been, since you aren't allowed full access to the entire city, which sort of kills the fun out of having "open ended gameplay". I know this is probably asking too much, but the ability to walk around buildings would be nice.

The AI is definetly the worst I have ever seen. Cars would stop in front of a rolled over car, and instead of driving around it, they would sit there and honk at it for a while. The police have the aiming abilities of a monkey on crack, and while attempting to hit me, would crouch under their car to hide. Which is fine, except for the fact that they usually do this on the side of the car I'm at.

Graphics 2/5
Poor and lacking detail, but kudos for having so many things on the screen without slowdown. Careless graphical glitches are everywhere, everything from water appearing from nowhere on a dock to not being able to see your car.

Sound 3/5
The talk radio station and commercials are great, but the actual soundtrack is uninteresting and highly repetitive. After a week of playing, I had heard everything there was over and over again.

Replay value 2/5
Starting over again isn't really that appealing, and mini-missions are absolutely terrible.

Entertainment 3/5
Worth a try, but certainly not for everyone.

My current favorite game

I resisted getting GTAIII for a long time. Now I'm hooked. Gameplay is very smooth. I don't see problems with loading textures or any of that, but I have a very high end graphics card. I really like that you can stuff MP3s into a directory and play them on the MP3 radio station. I like that you can customise the controls. My complaints would be that you can't set it up with you joystick, so you are stuck with right left and straight, as opposed to turning the wheel a little right or all the way right. Steer with the handbrake. It takes a while to get to the other islands. I guess it'll force me to drive in unfamiliar turf and all, but I want to just visit over there.

Buying the strategy guide would be a good idea, but you can probably find most of the hints on-line. The maps are useful, and the guide clues you in to the value of the off-plot missions. You get access to power-ups at your base for collecting packages, killing criminals, putting out fires and all that stuff.

Worth the money... IF you've got the speed

With a 600 mhz AMD Athlon and ATI Rage 128 Pro, it's almost unbearably slow. With an improvement in the video card category, it runs MUCH better. However, the minimum and even the recommended requirements listed on the box are very hopeful and very doubtful. I've got above the minimum and just below the recommended and I cannot enjoy it to the fullest extent. Just be wary of YOUR speed and be ready to upgrade the computer if you want real performance. With the graphics turned all the way down in the game, it still lacks in continuity. Once upgraded, a great purchase.

A great game, one of my top 3 favorites

This game along with Deus Ex and Hitman 2 are my top 3 favorites (as i just stated) Grand Theft Auto 3 is recommended to all people who want to create carnage in a simulated environment and get to live the Godfather or even Cops. However this is not recommended for whiney people who say that obscene games are bad and encourage obscene behavior. A favorite quote of mine that i cant remember where i saw states "If games had major impact on how we live our lives, we'd all be dressed up as yellow circles eating fruit and little pieces of gold." The game can get challenging when you have to go from Staunton Island to Liberty City and back again without getting killed by gangs that want you dead and for some reason can spot you in any car you may be driving, but the game has infinite replay possibility because of the many ways you can complete a mission, such as one where you have to [illiminate] "Chunky" Lee Chong. You can either bust into the alley gun cracking and chase him down, or you can snag his car before they see you, plant a bomb on it that will detonate when started again, and let him run away, or at least try :0. And then another thing thats never boring is shooting a cop, and blowing up all cop cars and helicopters with your always trusty M16.
This game is a load of fun for those of you who love cars and racing games and for those who love action adventure games with a semi immersive plot, or for the carnage hungry fools that just like to see stuff go boom.

Great Gameplay

The Good and the Bad

Had I written this review a few months ago, I would have given Grand Theft Auto 3 a 5-star, glowing review. But that was then, and this is now.

When I first purchased this game, it was all I played. I couldn't speak more highly of it. I knew a couple of people who had played it, and it sounded great. And, for a couple of months, it really was. But somewhere along the way, it just got tiring. I will probably get yelled at for saying this, but: it's a really hard game. I know, I know, video games aren't supposed to be easy, and I don't expect them to be, but this one is just insane. Some things I overlooked when I first started playing, because I was "blinded by love", but now I see them clear-as-day. Just the fact that you can't save a game at any old time is very annoying. You have to get to your hideout to save a game, and sometimes your hideout seems to be a million miles away. You can't save during a mission, so if you die or get arrested, you lose all of your weapons, and lose money. You never realize how wonderful quicksave/quickload is until it is taken away from you. There isn't even any difficulty levels to choose from. The timed missions are sometimes excruciating, and they can take multiple tries to accomplish. And ever since I started playing again recently, I've noticed that the audio is all messed up, which makes it annoying to listen to cut-scenes and the radio stations.

But here are the good points: it's fairly open-ended. I can take any car I want and drive it to wherever I want, and choose the radio station I want to listen to. The radio stations are probably one of the highlights of the game - every single one is wonderful. Plus, with the PC version of the game, you can make your own MP3 station and put whatever songs on it that you'd like. The graphics are great, and each island is huge - so huge it's easy to get lost. And just standing on the sidewalk, watching passers-by is entertainment enough (today I saw a cop run over an old man!).

So I can't give this game a really bad review because it did hold my interest for quite a while. It's a clever, highly-addictive game, and worth the money. For anyone who is looking for a real challenge with close to a hundred hours of gameplay, this game is for you. For anyone who isn't...don't say I didn't warn you.

GTA3 has earned much praise for its open-ended mayhem style of play. You can steal all varieties of cars, trucks etc, kill people in limitless ways and break most everything. I am not usually a fan or this genre (preffering more realistic first-person stuff) but when my little brother and I stayed up till 4am playing GTA:Vice City on his new Playstation2 and my stomach hurt the next day from laughing so hard, I decided to buy GTA3 (since they don't make Vice City for the PC). I have played the game much since and have finished it many times.

Sure the game is violent but the novelty of that all wears off quickly. If the game were only shooting heads off of innocents and picking up prostitutes it would lose its appeal to even the most twisted players in minutes. What has really floored me about this game is its extremely vast playing environment. I am amazed at the detail that rockstar games has managed to stuff into a game that runs very smoothly on even older systems.

The graphics in GTA3 are not cutting edge by any means but drive up to the cliff above the Staunton View Picnic Area in Shoreside Vale, get out of the car and you will be amazed. You can see the whole city laid out before you. Jets turn in the sky on their final approach to the airport. The Shoreside lift bridge raises and lowers on schedule. Places where you've been are easily recognized. The imaginative creators of GTA3 have put together an amazing game that only scratches the surface of what is surely to come in the future.

There is so much to see and do in this game. Drive around looking for places to launch your stolen car off of (many of which cause the game to cut flawlessly to a cinema-style slow motion sequence of you going off the jump). The police "vigilante" mission segments (steal a police car and you can drive around in high speed chases trying to kill bad guys)could easily be sold as a stand alone game.

I hope Rockstar Games has noticed what it has accomplished in GTA3 and continues to improve on its ingenious and limitless premise.
Buy this game. You will not be dissappointed.

Use these tips to get your game working properly

Back in may, I wrote a review praising this game up and down. I also said it plays smoothly on my 1ghz AMD Athlon system with (only) a Geforce2 Pro video card. This means I was getting great framerates at 1024x768 with all the details on so I was really surprised to see all of the complaints. Many were from people with systems a lot more powerful than mine. Hopefully these tips will help get your game working or help you decide if your system can handle this game before you buy it.

1) The components you need to look at, in order of importance, are the video card, memory (RAM), and CPU speed. Some have complained of problems with off brand or integrated sound cards. I use a SBLive so I can't confirm, but Soundblaster users shouldn't expect problems. High performance PC games generally require quality components to run efficiently.

2) For video, make sure you have a 64MB card, preferrably Nvidia based and either a Geforce2 TI or faster.

3) Ati Radeon users, if you have an 8500 you should have no problems. If you have a 7500 you'll probably be tweaking the settings a little.

4) Make sure get the latest video drivers. I'd post links to where you can get them but the dumb censors here always delete them. Do a search and you'll figure it out. Nvidia users - I'm using the 28.32 drivers and the game runs great.

5) 256MB memory or greater is important for the game to run smoothly.

6) CPU - make sure you have 800Mhz (Intel or AMD) or better. You may be able to get away with slightly slower as long as your other components are up to par.

7) Defragging the hard drive may help but very little. The game rarely accesses the hard drive once the level is loaded.

8) If you have a Geforce2 MX card, the MX card is the problem. Sorry folks but those cards are real slugs. If you have a Geforce 4 MX card and you're whining, your card is a slug too. My Geforce 2 Pro is almost as fast as your card. Geforce3 and Geforce 3 Ti cards are faster than yours. If you don't believe me, consult the 3Dmark website for proof. Remember these words Nvidia card buyers - - MX = SLUG. That said, you should still get decent framerates from this game as long as you update your drivers.

Yes, Rockstar Games probably should be taken around back and slapped for saying this game will run on a P450 with a 16meg video card (minus one star for that nonsense). Maybe they'll include a 'work over a Rockstar programmer' mission in their next release.

Hope this helps.
