Mech Game Done Right

I have to say I have never been a fan of any of the Mech Warrior titles on the PC. This would have to be the best port of a PC game to a console that I have seen. The onlie feature is really fun and the game is easy for a first timer to jump right ina and have fun without being to fustrated trying to master the controlls. The only thing is playing against people who have finished the game and earned a new mech. If you play online you will see what I mean. The standard version of the games is a lot of fun as well. This game will require some thinking. Just running around and trying to blast anything that moves will get you slumped. Have fun and happy gamming.

Building go boom, and it fell right on me!

Finally a mech game that takes advantage of the things around you. If you are playing someone and they are close to a large building, don;t fight them, take out the building and let them take damage from it.

Someone finally thought it through! This game is a lot of fun!

Groovy game with a few minor drawbacks

This game rocks. The graphics, speed, and gameplay are superb, and well beyond the old PC versions of mechwarrior. The exploding buildings look great! The addition of defensive systems adds a new dimension to the game. As others have noted, the real strength of this game is in the multiplayer mode. Whether on XBL or otherwise, the multiplayer action is very intense and fun. (An aside, we hooked the xbox up to a laptop wall projector... if you like this game normally, try it on a 8'x10' screen! Fully imersive! Buhahaha!) However, as much as I love it, there are a couple drawbacks. Overall it seems like they had the foundation for a truly great game, but then rushed to release it before christmas, or cut corners for other reasons, and ended up with a merely good one.

First and foremost- NO CUSTOMIZATION! One of the best parts of the PC versions (and even Armored Core for PS) was that you could design and customize the mechs. None of that carried into mech assault. Each of the 7-8 standard mechs has TWO and only TWO weapons configurations to choose from. How lame is that?

Only one perspective- 3rd person. Yes, you get used to it after a while, but how hard would it have been to have an OPTION for 1st person cockpit view!?

The music is incredibly dull and while a token effort was made to make it fit the gameplay, it falls flat. One gets tired of the same old guitar riff over and over and over and...

The menu systems are clunky. By this I mean that they could/should have added a lot more depth and/or options. For one example (of several possible improvements), in the multiplayer mode, there is no way to see the stats of the various mechs. This is no problem for an experienced player who knows all the mechs and their capabilities/weapons, but what about the newbie who can't tell his Atlas from a hole in the ground?

If you have friends or have XBL, get this game for the multiplayer action. If you have no friends, don't bother. The one-player campaign is pretty silly but good practice for human-brained combat- the real meat of this game.

Great Title, if you have Xbox Live

This is a really fun game, and not your typical Mech simulator. The controls resemble those of Halo, except you're playing from the 3rd person rather than the 1st person. The missions are not overly difficult, but fun.

The real value in this game is with Xbox live. The multi-player is fun, but there is another benefit. Beginning in January 2003, there will be a rather large volume of downloadable additional content made available, and it is expected to be free content. This means more maps, more mechs, and more multi-player game types. Without Xbox Live, you will be unable to access this extra content. This is a 5 star title with Xbox live, but a 4 star title without.

In the vein of HALO....a must have

If you are into great xbox games then this one is for you. The single player missions are excellent, although occasionally repetitive. What makes the game is the xbox Live connection alowing you to play against up to 7 other people in real time. It is not as laggy as ghost recon or unreal championship. The only thing it lacks is the ability to customize your mech.

Awesome Game

It's been a long time since I have bought a game that actually makes me crave playing it (Halo). I'd be playing it right now if the TV wasn't all tied up. This game is awesome. A definite must have.

The graphics are stunning. They capture that same sense of realism that halo did. Very high quality stuff.

The sound will blow you away. Enough said.

You have plenty of different mechs to choose from. Different missions will call for different style mechs. Most mechs come equipped with three different weapons - rockets, lasers or machine guns, and a various third weapon which is usually the most powerful. Some mechs are fast and light, some are slow and heavy, some can fly a little, some can drop chaffs to protect against heat seeking rockets, some can cloak, etc. etc. etc...

Multiplayer is great, but only if you have more than 2 people. This game is an absolute blast on xbox live.

Did I mention that you can blow up buildings, snow drifts, bridges...all kinds of stuff. You can also use them to kill your opponents. Someone giving you trouble? Blow up the brigde hes standing on. Problem solved. Also, when you destroy a enemy mech, the explosion of his metal carcass will destroy you too if your too close to it.

The single player mode is excellent. You get attacked my tanks, helocopters, infantry, guns mounted into the sides of mountains, boats, other mechs. I have been playing this game for hours on end and I have yet to defeat it. It's very challenging and can be frustrating at times. The one thing that I would almost complain about is the lack of checkpoints in the missions. It kinda sucks when you get killed by the very last thing in the level and have to start all over, but at the same time it raises the stakes a bit. It makes you want to stay alive more.

Im sure there is more that I've left out. This game is more than worth the money. I'm very happy with it.

this game is great best xbox game since halo

this game rock its good for anyone who like robots fighting but dont like the simulaton part of it i dont know how you say you cant controll it but i will say at frist it waas hard but it easy once you get in to it and you can turn the torso and movie in one direction you move forward then move the aim (right stick) in the dirction you want the forward movement will try to follow the aim dirction but if you let go of the left stick the move it again it will then be move one way while aiming another it sound harder then it really isi dont think they gave the game a fair chance in the second reveiw after the 3nd level i was use to the controlls and now after playing this i wish mech warrior 4 and its addons and such had the graphics this game has this is a great game

A Solid Effort

MechAssault has very good graphics and good gameplay. It is in truth "simpler" than the other "Battletech Universe" games for the PC, but I feel this is a necessary adjustment for a console game -- who wants to spend half an hour configuring your 'Mech when you just want to be blowing stuff up?

One pet peeve -- no checkpoints. If you fail a mission, you must start again from the beginning of that mission.

This is a very good title to accompany the launch of the Xbox Live service.

NOT Mech Warrior!

If you have played the original Mech Warrior on the PC DO NOT waste your money on this one!

I grew up playing FASA's Mech Warrior on the PC. Too bad FASA went out of business and Micro$oft bought some of their games.

The only thing this game has in common with the original game is in the name and concept; as far as game play is concerned it SUCKS! Mech Assult is no where near what the original PC game was and is a total disappointment.

I have found that a lot of games that are supposed to be so great on the XBox are a disappointment when compared to the older PC and Play Station-1 games. Yes the graphics on the XBox are great but the content is lacking; too bad some of the old game programmers are not around anymore to write games for the XBox, it could be so great but...
