good, but not one I'll play for long

MechAssault is a solid game with great production values. Great sound, graphics and effects all around. I love the explosions in particular. It's missing so many elements that make a game great, though, that I don't think these people who write glowing reviews will be playing it a month from now.

Single Player
It's entertaining and well scripted. The difficulty level is about right, but the lack of mid-mission save points makes for a lot of frustration as you are forced to repeat a lengthy mission (which have some slow parts) if you're killed towards the end. For the record, I'm 3/4s through the campaign. It feels less like a Mech game and more like a pretty good first-person shooter.

Xbox Live
Many of the console owners are so happy to get online that they overlook a lot of flaws, hence the huge praise on live! There is a terrible lack of variety in gameplay on live! with two or three game modes, which all boils down to "kill the other guy". Just the "who" changes from one mode to another. For the most part, each game just turns out to be a circle-strafe fest.

Worse, the mechs are terribly imbalanced. There's virtually no reason to not choose a big mech with good defense and guided weapons, which boils the choices down to 4 or so of the 30+ mechs. It's no surprise that you see games full of Mad Cats and Ragnoraks. Also, the console controls make it neccessary for guided weapons to have a big role, and those guided weapons are so accurate that the speed advantage of smaller mechs is virtually meaningless. A Capture the Flag mode or a mech size cap in game setup would go a long ways to making smaller mechs more usable. Maybe there should be areas that only small mechs can get powerups. Dunno.

Finally, there's the chat aspect. Amazingly, you have to hold down a button to talk to your team, rather than broadcast your plans to your opponents. I'm considering rigging something to keep that button depressed during team games, but that's poor design. There's no time to keep your thumb down on a particular button in the game, so basically the only chat you hear is taunting. It turns out that I can only take so much of kids with odd accents hollering about this or that and trying to take obscenity to a new level of art (but failing). Trust me, you'll leave your headset off if you spend any real time online.

It's still good for a quick game and can be fun if you have several friends online, but it's just like the deathmatch mode of every other shooter in terms of longetivity. Enjoy it, but don't expect to get several weeks of fun gameplay out of it.

Great game

First off, I want to say that I feel bad for the gamer who had a hard time with the controls, that can ruin any game. But on the other side, the controls are fairly easy, almost to easy. To fly, your mech first has to have jump jets, and all you have to do is press in the anolog control on the left. As far as controling the torso and legs, you can do it both at same time. You can retreat while shooting back at the enemy from your 6oclock. The controls are fairly dumped down past the actual movement, which makes game very fun. You can use your left trigger to change weapons, and right trigger to fire. The voice acting is excellent and the levels are very impressive. All things virtually can be blown up, making leveling a city very enjoyable. My only complant is you cant customize mechs, and there is unlimited ammo, I am really into the PC Mech warriors, and unlimited ammo isnt really my thing. But, unlimited ammo equals Much much more destruction, so that in itself is fun =)

Great Graphics and Awesome Multiplayer

To start off, Mechassault has some of the greatest explosions I have seen on the Xbox yet. Everything is destructible, everything is flammable, and everything looks beautiful. The single player mode is fun for a while, but gets a bit old after 5 or 6 missions. The most fun part of the missions is destroying the other mechs. They are the most difficult enemy in the mission, and are usually matched closely to your own mechs abilities.

Where this game really shines is the multiplayer and online capabilites. There is almost never slow down on the broadband connection. The free-for-all battles are great, and are very challenging to beginner and veteran alike. The multiplayer is just as good, especially with system link play.

Mechassault is a great buy if you have a broadband connection. If you're a fan of mech games, you'll like this game even if you don't have a broadband connection. Maybe one of the best games for Xbox Live yet.

Saying this game is OK is streching it

This game has some good qualities:
graphics - very good, especially explosions and weapon effects - 4.5

sound - pretty good effects, but horrible music

lots of mechs.

that's all I can think of, here is what I don't like about the game.

Simplicity - The game has depth, but everything is so simple. There is no reason why custom mechs where left out, people with xbox live are more likely to be adults and own computers than anyone other audience. There are only four buttons you need to use, and while learning tactics of a certain mech will take time, the gameplay overall does not change.

Complete Lack of modes - You'll be lucky to see anyone play the game Not It. The only 2 modes availible are deathmatch/team deathmatch. That is ridiculous for an online game today. Basically all it is kill everyone, while that is how unreal plays modes like bombing run and double domination are very appreciated once learned. Gets old fast. Speaking of lacking, the selection of maps is terrible, there is around 6, a few which are very similar to eachother.

Horrible Balance - Adding to my thoughts that the game was rushed, the Mad Cat is the most overused and cheesiest mech on xbox live. How can you have a mech with DUAL ppc's, quad rockets, and a high machine gun, WITH Target Jamming!! The fun of going online has been eliminated for me, because all you see is people with no skill use ragnarok's and mad cat's all the time. The game can be fun when people choose mech's that take expirience to play.

Buggy xbox live support - who's ever heard of an online game that kicks everyone out after every round...or one that kicks out someone every other time in team destruction. or one that lets you hear the opponents speech in team destruction. play this to find out.

One player mode is no good - It really takes 4 hrs. gametime not counting repeats to get through it, and really I haven't even cared to finish it, it's just so boring and scripted(will anyone learn from halo). Microsoft should not be releasing PC style online games on a console unless they have a solid one player game, because really under 5% of xbox owners have access to xbox live.(the 2-player game isn't fun, why not include bots or something??)

And the final straw which motivated me to write this review, as of 2/1 none of the promised january downloable content has shown up, something in my opinion this game really needed.

Best shooter since Halo

I think that a reviews are easier to understand if they are broken into catagories, so here goes.

Gameplay- Very well thought out and developed. controls are simple and easy to get used to, framerate is flawless no matter how chaotic it gets. plot is simple, but has enough twists to keep your attention. this game is extremely immersive, so much that its hard to keep your mind off of it even when your not playing.

graphics- pretty damn good, even when compared to splinter cell. everthing is detailed extremely well, from the spectacular explosions to the massive enviornments are heavily detailed and destructable. not to mention that the BattleMechs, tanks and turrets are perfectly animated.

sound- more oriented toward sound effects than cool background music-the game's only major drawback.

Overall- I'd give it a ten out of ten if it weren't for the not-so-great background music, so my final verdict is 9 out of ten.

not as good as I hoped...

When I first saw the game I just couldn't stop thinking about it now I think I could have done without. The game it self actuwally is a good idea like the graphics and all but the story line just down right stinks its basiclly fight, fight, fight! and thats it kill this bad dude and defend the base. There is a nice verity of things to kill and meches to use but there are not very many diffrent veichels to drive. Another thing when you replay levels you have the same mechs that you did when you originaly played them.I sugest that you first rent or borrow this game before you bye it I made that mistake and I do not want you to too.

I hope this review was helpful for you

Something's missing

My love of this game began when I got into the enemy base and hit a couple of buildings. Suddenly it went from "this is okay" to "oh wow!"

After that I spent the next few evenings smashing my way through enemy fortifications and mechs and having a blast. And that is what this game is about, by the way, shooting things. I don't have a high speed connection, so no Xbox Live. Maybe some day I will get to try that.

Only in hindsite did the game have some things missing. I remember my old Mech Warrior game on the PC. you bought mechs, hired pilots, and led your merc lance to victory. Salvage did not improve your mech. You sold it to increase yor take. Also, you weren't salvaging abstract bonuses, you were salvaging whole mechs, so it was in your interest to leave them as intact as possible to improve their resale (or repair them for your own use).

A lot more plot and detail in the old game. Damage varied on where you were hit. No repairs in combat. Limited ammo on guns and missiles (though not on energy weapons which made them popular). Repairing and rearming cost precious cash, so you picked your own missions with the mercenary mindset of what's in it for me, and haggled for the price.

These are things I'd love to see in a Mech Assault 2. In the meantime, I'll happily kill anything that crosses my path with a smile on my face.

the thrills won't last forever

Mechassualt was released for the sole purpose of being an exclusive Xbox Live title. It does a lot of things well: great graphics, good soundtrack and soundeffects, and it uses the liscense very well. The multiplayer modes are amazing too where you can use broadband, system link, or local console modes. This all sounds good but the fun just doesn't last. With only 3 different weapons for each mech, things get kind of boring. There is a great variety of mechs but they basicly have the same moves. Another aspect of the game which is done poorly is the campaign mode. It is rather short and for most the difficulty is very hard. I know it sounds like a lot is wong with this game but if you are a dier mech fan (unlike me) this could be your favorite game.

I owned this game for less than 2 days and am already in love with it. the live download content enhanced the game play and allowed me to fight even the british in their mechs from here in the US. it also allows up to eight players

Promised features are missing

There is an important feature missing from this game that was promised before it was released: the ability to design your own bases and use them in multiplayer. Like I said, there is nothing like this in the game. SO you can imagine why I'm disappointed.

The single-player game is alright, but the game is most fun on XBox live. If you don't have Live, then don't worry about missing out on this game, it doesn't have much to offer you.

I'm also glad I own this game because you will need it if you want Linux on your XBox. That's right, thanks to a save-game exploit in this game, you can load the Linux operating system onto your XBox. If your curious about this, vist http://www.xbox-linux.org/
