Finally a good DBZ game

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 3 / 5
Date: December 29, 2002
Author: Amazon User

Finally, after years of waiting, a good DBZ game is here. Final Bout was okay, but this game is much better. The character selection is mostly everyone from the saiyan saga to the end of the cell saga. They even have the same voices from the tv show. Now im not just giving this game 4 stars because I like DBZ, it earned them.

There are quite a few modes of play. There is story mode, where you follow basically the same story as the tv show. Then you can go back and play it again to get more characters. There is duel mode, which is just 1 on 1. There is also tournament mode, where you compete for money. With the money, you can buy capsules to customize the fighter's moves. Also you can unlock harder level tourneys, so you will not get too bored. Last but not least, legend of hercule mode. This mode is unlocked once you beat the adept tournament, and buy the capsule from mr.popo. It is probably the most fun mode, because you compete in the cell games and there are handicaps. Hercule always has something funny to say that just cracks me up. If you are a fan of Hercule or hate him, you will like this mode. Truly this makes the game the best. Playing with Hercule is the most rewarding expeirience ever. His moves make him look so weak, yet they are funny and do alot of damage in the end. But you are probably wondering about the fighting. The fighting is pretty basic. You can move forward and backward, or sidestep to move left and right. But you cannot jump or crouch. The only way to fly is to get knocked into the air. Still the moves look beautiful and are easy to master. When you transform into a super saiyan or power up, you do more damage, and your icon by your health changes. But theres one thing that you have to learn, its how exactly to pull off moves. The move may say to do 4 kicks in a row, but hitting the kick button 3 times will probably be sufficient. This is because hitting kick once may result in the character kicking 2 times. Once you understand it, and play duel a couple times, you will start to love it, and it will feel natural. The graphics are beautiful. Everyone looks just like the cartoon, but in 3d. Also everyone moves so fluently, and dont jerk around. So the fighting is top-notch.

The only big flaw in this game is that it may get old. Fighting over and over can get boring. And after doing story mode, it is pointless to do it again. Also, no girl fighters are available, so the females may feel left out. One more thing, there are not enough tutorials to teach you how to do things. There are some in the story, but not enough. I still do not know how to charge my ki, and it took me forever to learn how to side step. Otherwise, feel free to buy this game.

The BIGGEST disappointment of the year

When I heard that the Dragonball Z game had been pushed up to the first week of December, I went nuts! I am a HUGE Dragonball fan (embarassingly so as a 28-year-old father), so I immediately plunked down my fifty bucks to pledge my allegiance to Goku and company. Upon picking up the game (and strategy guide) I immediately felt some reprehension: if the game is being released early, isn't it prone to some poor gameplay issues due to lack of testing? Is Infogrames being another typical "get the dollars-screw the game" comapny? Am I due to be ROYALLY ...?

YES!

First, I'd like to state that this is a great example why America needs to be applauded for inventing the receipt. This game is a steaming pile of Japanese dung. It has the most laughable control set-up for a fighter I have ever had the displeasure of playing. The controls are designed to be combo-happy, but you can rarely pull off any creative combos beside the special move combos preset in the game. The game plays like the lead programmer indulged in drugs, played Tekken, Tobal No. 1, and Shaq-Fu, and then yelled "THAT'S IT!" How come the fighters pause sometimes in between punches and kicks? WHY in the HELL do I have to do a combo to launch Goku's Kamehameha Wave? Ins't THAT supposed to be something you have as a finisher? Why is it a cheap combo endpoint? Sure, there are 23 characters to choose from, but the signature moves are reduced to cheap afterthoughts in the abysmal combo sytem. The fights have generally NO strategy: simply play defense until a boring string of punches/kicks stops and then counterattack. The regular ranged attacks have no real stopping power - a REAL kick in the rear seeing as though the DBZ universe practically revolves around projectiles flying towards opponents. The attacks are mostly short ranged, so you have the feeling that the backgrounds could have consisted of phone booths and crowded buses. Playing against the computer is a lesson in frustration; the computer rarely lets your fighter get far away, so you wind up balling up in the fetal position blocking until you see daylight to throw a counter attack. None of the moves fans enjoy (i.e. the Gallick Gun, the Special Beam Cannon) pack enough wallop as the generic moves found throughout most of the fighters repertoire.

The graphics aren't too shabby, though. The game remarkably captures the cartoony look, but the appearnace of some characters have way too much of a polygonal appearance - which leaves you to think what the game would have looked like if Infogrime had WAITED to put this out. The versus mode suffers due to the aforementioned lousy fighting engine, and the story mode is standard fare to any fan of the DBZ series. If you've watched the cartoons, you know the storylines. The game has a skill shop, in which players can customize the fighters' movesets to a degree - but the game ... so bad who cares?
The music stinks, too.

The bottom line: avoid this garbage and 10 people who like this B.S. This isn't even a good recommendation for kids because the moves are insanely hard to pull off with any frequency. Buy this only for mortal enemies, and a certain 10-year old gamer you know who thinks every game is cool !) lol!

Love it, but it shoulda had improvments, and the whole saga

I am a fan of DBZ, and I like this game, but oh so much could have been improved and added as well.
Pros:
Has 5 fighting modes
Nice voice acting
I love big moves like the spirit bomb
Story mode is nice in many ways
Hyper-fast battles
Tournament battles are great
If u r a DBZ fan like me, then this game is libal 2 have great gameplay
Get all 7 dragonballs and u can unlock all of someones skills
The Best DBZ 2 date
Cons:
Can't choose capsules
Graphics r so so
not so good music

should be able to disable ring out on the tournament, cuz I hate losing like dat
Wish it had the Boo saga as well, The game would have been much better
Trying 2 git capsoles that u want are very frustrating as well
And so are dragonballs
Some moves are the same thing just a diffrent name
Computers are very repetitive

Well, this is the DBZ thus far, if they make another BDZ in the future, I hope it will have the whole saga(which it propably will) a whole lot of extras, and U can chose capsoles except theyre at a high price to make the game more enjoyable, then just byin usless skills, just 2 git to the big ones. If you're not a fan of DBZ nor fighting games, then I know ur not gonna like dis game; if u are a fan of fightin and not DBZ, this might be worth a rent, or a borrow; but if u r a fan of DBZ, u should have this game by now.

oh my god this was the best game ever to hit the market. If you do not have this game I suggest that you buy it immediately and get rush delivery!!!! The tournament mode is awesome and so is everything else. The only problem is the graphics. They could have improved a lot. I am looking forward to the next game they make. But they have to improve on the music. They should put on like eminem or something. Those were my only complaints. This is a buy buy buy.

This game is cool

This game is really fun. I liked the extra stories alot. I don't see why they didn't put the buu sags in after they put it in Legendary Super Warriors for Gameboy Color.

Finally a Dragonball Z that has such high replay value

Dragonball Z: Budokai is an excellent game. The story mode takes you from the beginning (Saiyan Saga) all the way to the middle of the series (Cell Saga). The actual voices used in the American T.V. series were used as voice overs for the characters in this game. Which to my finding was very impressive and made the game play much more enjoyable.
There are a few things though that make me a little dissapointed about this game. The fact that some of the best characters are not included in this game due to the fact that it doesn't go all the way to the end (Kid Buu Saga). We're missing the many forms of Buu, Goten, Trunks, Gotenks, Supreme Kai, Kibito, Dabura, and the incredible Vegito.
Despite those factors, this game has massive replay value. The actual moves done through the series are embedded in this game. Where else can you nail Krillen with a spirit bomb, or beat Goku with Vegeta. It all happens in this game, I'm sure you'll love it if you love Dragonball Z.

Worth the money...deffinately

This is a great game it only has up until the ending of the Cell Games Saga, but still it is way better than Budokai 2, 3 and Sagas. For one this is not a "board" game type game as the second one or an adventure like Budokai 3 or an everywhere traveling game like Sagas, it's just a plain old simple fighting game with great cut-scenes. I give this game a 5 out of 5 and a 10 out of 10(My highest rating ever).

nice game

This game rocked... You I just realized I might be putting all my comments under PS2 when I am writing about gamecube... ops sorry Jeff. Any way I realy like the game and the mr. satan/hurcle game mode is the best ever. It is the DBZ story though Cell saga told as if Mr. satan had saved the world. It is quite a bit of fun. I would say this game is a must for all the DBZ fans out there.
