Final Fantasy X-2 - The sequel.

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 2 / 3
Date: November 10, 2006
Author: Amazon User

Let me first off say, this is the sequel to Final Fantasy X, so I advise to play that first to understand bits and parts of the storyline. You can survive Final Fantasy X-2 if you haven't played X, but I highly recommend to do so. I made the mistake of playing X-2 first, so that is why I mentioned that.

Onto the game.

Despite high criticism, looks and the apparent differences that come with comparing this Final Fantasy to the previous Final Fantasies, the game is not all that bad. If you want to breeze through it, you can - but I recommend you do not, for you'll miss some parts I'm sure once aware of them you don't want to miss again.

The story begins with a concert - different in itself, no? - And it seems as if Yuna is on stage. You can see from the start a change; this is probably where people start the criticism. It seems a bit girlish, based on a concert, none the less singing a pop-based song. Anyways, along the opening scene you see Rikku and new character Paine, and after the scene the game begins.

From the start you start chasing 'Yuna', a new task is brought upon you that was not featured in the other Final Fantasies. Now you have chapters, and even harder, a percentage completion.

Most people I have come across have not completed the game to 100%, and that is where the main challenge lies. Heck, the highest percentage I have reached is to 98.

So...even further we go, shall we?

Battles : They are different. WAY different. Compared to FFX, FFX's battle system is slow. The battles are time based - meaning, it's not you attack, then the enemy attacks. The enemy will attack when it can; imagine it having a gauge in order to attack, just as you do. It's like that, and that means you gotta keep up to pace.

Another difference lies in the 'roles' your characters will play. You only have three characters to fight with through the whole game; Yuna, Rikku and Paine. But fear not, you are given the dresspheres. Personally, I think the dresspheres are great; there are many, some hidden, but one is bound to spark your interest. Each have their strong points, although I can admit a couple I find somewhat pointless.

Storyline : Sin's not there anymore, as you probably figured out already. So, what are you supposed to do? Exactly - Yuna's gonna look for 'you know who', as he is dubbed within FFX-2. That kind of irked me in the beginning, but I got distracted by it as I was given missions and tasks. Heck, she might get her wish...if you do things right.

So in general, the storyline isn't superb, but not totally bad. New characters are introduced, old ones replaced (Yeah, Auron's not there anymore. That was rather depressing on my part, considering he was one of my favorites). As you go along, it gets rather interesting, and in the slightest bit confusing, but as always, there is the one evil boss at the end you have to defeat.

Music : Nobuo Uematsu, the man that created the music for the past Final Fantasies, does not create the one for this one. The music is different, but personally, it didn't really bother me much. It's GAME music, for pete's sake; I wasn't pissed, because some tracks were actually pleasing to listen to. The beginning song, Eternity ~Memory of Lightwaves~, very much sticks out to me, due to it's slighty mysterious but beautiful melody. In fact, if I were to compare FFX Soundtrack to FFX-2, many would kill me for saying this, but I prefer FFX-2 Soundtrack. In FFX, many of the songs were remakes/instrumentals of Suteki da ne, and that lacks on FFX-2, only a couple of them relating to Yuna's Ballad and there's a remake of Eternity ~Memory of Lightwaves~ that is just as enjoyable as the original. To those that stick to Uematsu and know his style, this may be a bit different, but hey, it isn't exactly horrible to listen to though.

Those are really the three things I can think of. The game has main events, and if only completing those main events, you'll reach a percentage of 45%. I'm not kidding. So, beat those minigames that take up more then half the game - that was really my main complaint, and probably complaints of others - more minigames. But, these minigames will contribute to the plot, and you'll learn some interesting things and in turn get interesting items/accessories/dresspheres because of them.

And if you fail the first time, you don't have to totally start over. After you beat the game, it is easily replayable..if you select New Game Plus. In this, you have all your items, etc. and it's considerably easier and nice to have.

I'll end at this point, before I go completely into spoilers. This is a long review, but hey, this review matches the length of the freakin' game. It's enjoyable, has a touch of cornyness, and sometimes makes me laugh. I think this game can measure up to FFX, and with that, I could consider it a nice RPG to buy.

Although, I will say, if you want a NICE taste of the famous series called Final Fantasy, I would play FFVI, or FFVII. Those I believe are the superb games within the series.

An Enjoyable Sequel

First off, I am a big fan of Final Fantasy X. It was the first Final Fantasy game that I actually played to the end and beat. When I saw that a sequel had come out, I was a little skeptical. I finaly convinced myself to try it, and I found it to be very enjoyable. There are a number of differences between Final Fantasy X-2 and its predecessor, however. Such as the battle system. There are only three playable characters, so the creators came up with the idea of dress spheres which allow the characters to change jobs (for instance: Warrior, Thief, Gunner, Black Mage, White Mage, etc.) during battle. Also, unlike its predecessor, Final Fantasy X-2 is mission based. In this game, you are able to travel to anywhere in Spira at any time you like, and there are different missions to complete throughout Spira. As you complete missions, the story progresses. In this game, you play as Yuna, Riku, and a new character who goes by the name of Paine. The game starts out light hearted, but slowly turns into a quest to save the world. This game may not be for everyone, but if you're a fan of Final Fantasy X, you should definitely give it try.

A great game hidden by a bad presentation

Final Fantasy X-2 is a direct sequel to Final Fantasy X. Although it's not as great as Final Fantasy X, it's still pretty good. Don't let the girly characters and packaging fool you, there's a great game underneath. FFX-2 is a great rpg and uses the job system very well. It's definetely worth your time if you love Final Fantasy or are a fan of the job system.

LOVE ETERNALLY!!

I love this game very much. Wonderful story that followed the first. The battle system is great and fun. Lots of choices you can undertake as well as control over the story direction. Must have if you want to know the ending to Final Fantasy X.

Almost dissapointing.

I just have to say that I played Final Fantasy 10 twice and I loved every minute of it and cried both times. So naturally I was excited to see if Tidus returns in 10-2. The game goofy at best. There is a respectable storyline if you can ignore all the almost pointless (yet required) sidequests like making monkeys fall in love to get tourists out of Zanarkand. I would recommend to anyone willing to play this game (and trust me it will test your love of the game) to look up at least how to see the "Good" Ending when reaching the end. The "Common" ending is just terribly dissapointing. I'd love to say I loved this game as much as the first, but I spent waaay too much time solving crime for the Al Bhed and digging in the desert to really say it was good.

X-2, the answer to a long unanswered question.

Regardless of what you hear or read regarding X-2 you must keep in mind a few things. No, this game is not as good as FFX, I personally do not think there is a better game out there. (Skies of Arcadia comes very close though.) Don't get me wrong, X-2 is a great game compared to most out there. Sure they changed a few things: it's not linear but mission based now; the battles are no longer turn based but instead are active which means if you hesitate you can die; dress spheres are used to change jobs instead of changing characters; a lot more silliness has been added, though the heart wrenching moments can still be found.

It's a game worth owning! It deserves 5 stars because it's an RPG that is a true sequel and like any other game is plagued with it's faults but the wonders more than make up for any downfalls.

When you play this game don't play it for the graphics, don't play it for the story, don't play it because it's a sequel to one of the most popular RPGs out there, don't play it just because it's another title put out by Square, you should play this game to answer the one question that everyone has been asking and pondering since FFX came out....

What happens to Tidus?!

That's the only reason this game was made, so go find out if it's what you thought.

Though, playing it for any other reason won't do any harm. :)

I thought this game was going to be like Final Fantasy X but it wasn't. Bummed me out when there was no guy characters from X. This game would be great for ladies. As for guys, if you like to see half-naked charaters, this is a must get(lol).

If you thought about what would happen if you took FFX and crossed it with britney spears/Nsync that is what you would have. Yes, I am a man, I like looking at good looking women when I'm playing games. But this is just foolish. The main characters act as if they are 12. The game is marketed towards 14-17yr old horny boys. I loved FF5-9, but this is just sick. Why can't Square make a good oldschool FF. Heck, if they took FF6 and redid it with the new graphics, maybe tweak the plot a little bit to give it a little new jazz for old school FF people. The job system is nice, (FFX had the worst leveling system ever...), but they couldn't just call it "Jobs" no, they had to call it "Dress Spheres"...More crap thrown in. Square, fire your writers and hire someone who knows whats up and make the best Final Fantasy EVER!

Deserves an award: WORST GAME OF THE YEAR AWARD!

As the title says this is the worst game of the year. There are some major flaws in the game that give it the 1/5. First of all the gameplay. Terrible, absolutely terrible. You run around using difficult controls, bad camera angles and even worse fighting sequences. Come on, if your gonna battle then battle. You have to stand there and get hit (just like all of the other FF's), then when you finally choose the attack you want to do you've already lost alot of life. Next, the voice acting. The worst I've ever seen (well, besides Sonic Adventure 2 Battle that is). And whats with the Charlie's Angel's theme? Three girls battling evil. Uh, Square Enix, thats already taken, but nice try. Trust me do not go for this title. It is a waste of your money. Instead of meaninglessly spending money on this title purchase Kingdom Hearts. Its less expensive and alot better.
