It's different.

I was kind of disappointed with Final Fantasy X-2. After playing Final Fantasy X, I thought this game would continue on that note. It's about 3 teenage girls, one of them Yuna, who was so grown up and serious in Final FantasyX, and in this game she seems so immature. The game to me is kind of silly. The gameplay consists of different assignments, and you don't get rewarded until the mission is accomplished. Like I said, I personally am not that fond of this game, but teenage girls might like it just fine.

Unusual but entertaining!

Alright, this game is NOT like the other Final Fantasies. First of all, the storyline is more...perky. The characters--the girls Yuna, Rikku, and Paine--are bright and cheerful and so is the artwork. I was a little stunned when I got this game, because if you've played all the others, you get used to the tales of woe and dark, sad pasts. The girls (and their pals)are very silly at times (ok--dorky)but who cares? I found FFX-2 refreshing b/c you can kinda get depressed from playing other FF games. ("Oh, no! I'm all alone in a world of darkness! No one understands me, everyone hates me, I'm gonna die...!")
I live for CGI cutscenes. Yes, there were some, but not enough, and there was this funny blurry effect. Personally, I sort of wanted to see more scary boss battles and a big ending. But in this sequel to FFX, I saw more Sailor Moon outfits than anything. (Yes, I gave it 5 stars, I'm getting to that). In place of commanding 'aeons' (powerful monster allies) the girls gather 'dresspheres'--transformation outfits. As a girl-gamer I am an advocate for fully-clothed kick butt women. So when I saw some of the scanty outfits in FFX-2, I was a little offended. Most men would find the lack of clothing great, but really? Is that all there is to games featuring women? Being sexy/naked/well-endowed? Is that all there is to men's brains?

Ok, ok, I'm sorry. Now since I'm off my tangent, here's the good stuff:

You can play to get different endings, and the game does not control where you go. You can decide whether you want to save Spira or go to the themepark. Heck, you can even decide to leave in the middle of a mission if you want to. (Yeah, leave the last two people to get buried alive in the cave)!

You can ride around in the Ragnarok (flying ship) until you're dizzy. Tired of games where you have to run around and get lost trying to find where you need to be? Well, they fixed that. There's a map (no manual flying/walking involved at all--unless you want to walk) that points you exactly where you need to go to continue the story.

You get to interact with the other original FFX characters. The storyline still has its FF dark moments and wistful flashbacks, and that's perfect. It would be hard to get motivated to kick butt without a little shove off of happiness hill.

Sidequests are played only if you choose to, and they're not half bad to play. You get good stuff. The dresspheres/barbie clothes transformations are ok too, if anything, neat to watch and to explore the different skills each possess. Fighting is fast and pretty easy, no real long waits. You can even cut off a bad-guy's attack. The girls kick tail, even if they are slightly immature teens.

I like the singing thing. For some reason, Yuna becomes sort of a diva, and the concert and dancing is entertaining, and the pop music is catchy. Yuna can also jump and climb things (for no apparent reason) but it's an added twist.

The graphics are the best(FFX and FFX-2). and you'd think that you'd see the same old stuff since FFX-2 is in the same general setting as FFX, but no! After playing it, I sort of snubbed my other "lesser" games and I'm trying to find something that's graphically just as good.

Even when I beat the game, I started over and did everything a different way, found different sidequests. I found myself saying, "Oh, it's time to go to work! Oh, but I can fit in one more mission, can't I? Just one more, quickly." Gasp! I was having fun!
If only the endings would satisfy me. That's my only real qualm about FFX-2. I gotta have a movie for all my work! But I can't be too harsh, because you can't ever seem to get everything you want in just one game...

...or can you...?

Here are the facts about the game

I was extremely disappointed with this game and here are the irrefutable facts from someone older than 20 who has been playing RPG games since they were invented.

1. There are no limit breaks
2. No weapon purchasing
3. No summoning
4. No resting at any inn's (not needed in this game)
5. And perhaps the absolute worst part of the game was blitzball. Sure, we get to see the ladies play the game (Yuna, Rikku and Paine) but we can't control their characters. In its infinite wisdom, SquareSoft removed the player controls. That's right, you can't control the characters. The only thing you can do is add onto their stats by giving them "points" which will, in time, eventually make them better players -- unless they get injured and are out for SEVERAL games.

But it doesn't stop there.

6. As mentioned in the other reviews, SquareSoft has "womanized" the game. Just like in FF Tactics, the women have "women" equipment... perfume, earrings...etc. And before you say, "what's wrong with that" let me tell you how incredibly sexist that is. A true warrior beit male or female wouldn't have earrings and perfume in the place of armor. How would you feel if Wakka and Auron had to wear earrings and perfume?

7. The characters are BLATANTLY female. It's almost as if SquareSoft needed to emphasize this point to us because they thought we'd be to stupid to figure it out on our own. From their clothes to their mannerisms to the way Yuna runs. The entire time I played it I was trying to imagine Tidus, Wakka and Auron in their places... .

8. To change Jobs in the game you have to put on different clothes.

9. To change Jobs in the game you have to put on different clothes. Now I know that technically, it's the same as number eight, but I thought it was such a big problem that I should say it twice. Again, before you say "there's nothing wrong with that" imagine Tidus changing into a dancer and dancing around the screen in a short skirt in the battle against Jecht in FFX. Doesn't sound too appealing now, does it?

10. There's no linear plot, just various missions that Yuna can complete. This is because the game itself is extremely short without them.

11. There's tons of repetition in the game. Remember the cactaur game in FFX? If you like it then, I'm sure you'll like it once again in X-2!

To summarize, the game is too short, lackluster, full of singing and music and has way too little action; and with all of the side quests, it's hard to believe that her primary goal in the game is to find Tidus. She's so busy running around helping other people that the real story gets lost in the frenzy.

I am so glad I rented this game first.

some thoughts

So I've yet to play the game, nor have I really put much time into FFX, but being a loyal squaresoft fan, I would like to put out this advice.

If people are complaining about a lack of challenge in a FF game, then they may be right, but I wouldn't rag on this game in particular. Apart from FFV, I don't think any of the RPGs have been particularly difficult. Secret of Mana 3 was challenging enough... but nothing had me level building just for survival.

In most FF games, the characters are generally quite lovable while the graphics, music and cut scenes seem to add a certain amount of squaresoft "magic" to each game.

However, I am surprised that they would choose to make a sequel to any FF game, but I would hope that people judge this game for what it is, and not attack it simply because it is a sequel. There is no FF game that's for everyone. Each has its charms, while each style will cater to different people's tastes. Don't tout this game just becuase it is a sequel either. I believe that other than the characters and the setting, there will not be all that much resemblance to FFX.

You'll notice that each FF game seems to be the favourite of one fan or another. This is my hope for those who write reviews. Giving FFX2 5 stars might be a bit early, although the rating system doesn't really give it a point of comparison. Also, giving it 0 stars is likely a bit harsh, as you shouldn't be taking out your frustrations at sqaure for not putting out a game that is more similar to your favourite.

I will commend square for trying new ideas in each of their games, while keeping components that were popular in the past.

I am confident that they will consistently put out games of good, if not great quality.

Should not be in final fantasy series

I guess one positive thing I can say about this game is it is nothing like any of the other final fantasy games ever released. Ok the graphics are better so what! In my opinion a good final fantasy game would have a GOOD story line that intrigued you and kept you playing. This game on the other hand takes you on a journey of the sphere hunter yuna(who they degraded from final fantasy X as a high summoner to a shallow teenager) and her cute little friends looking for spheres for her lost boyfriend. Most of the game consists of side quests. You want to know why they are called side quests because they are not the game itself they are things to do on the side! Furthermore you can not even control the camera angle in the game. This games target audience seems to be jr. high teenage girls. I truthfully can not see how any gamer would enjoy this game.

Cant wait to get it!

When I first played FFX, I had found my newest favorite game! And since then nothing had taken FFX's place in my heart. I laughed and cried during the game, truely one of Square's best works. And when I heared about them doing a sequel to FFX I was jumping for joy! The first time I read about it was about a year ago in PSM Magazine which I had swiped from my boyfriend. It featured a picture of Yuna and some clips from the game which looked wonderful. From what I hear, you lead the game as Yuna and are searching for Tidus because you find something that leads you to believe he is still alive!(be still my beating heart) Instead of using magic this time, Yuna packs two pistols. This also has the return of Riku and a new female character. I also heared that in this game, Lulu is pregnant with Wakka's baby! Hopefully they keep up with Blitzball, since I, for one, adored the game. Anyways, I have been waiting for a year for the game, and since I trust Sqaures video gaming abilites, I know it will be as great as I think! If you want a sneak peek, check out Unlimited Saga, they have a preview for FFX-2 which makes me want to play it even more!

Soft porn meets Final Fantasy

I've been an avid Final Fantasy fan for about 15 years now, and I am sorely disappointed with the way the series has been progressing in the last few games.

If you are a 14 year old girl, you will love this game.

If you are a horny 16 year old boy, you will love this game.

If you love the earlier Final Fantasy games, this is a sad disappointment. The plotline is practically non-existant. I really couldn't bring myself to care about the characters, especially since I thought Rikku and Yuna were two of the most annoying characters in FFX. As is the case with all of the recent FF games, the end bosses were ridiculously easy if you had made any attempts to level up throughout the course of the game. Honestly the *only* reason I played this game to completion was to see the special ending with Tidus.

Just about every female character in this game has at least one close-up thong cameo. This game is great for drooling over half-naked digital women, but if a real RPG is what you're expecting then look elsewhere.

Good, really good.

I've seen all the one-star reviews for this game and many of them come from people who haven't actually PLAYED the game. Based on impression alone they're giving a great game bad reviews.
Here are some impressions from someone who actually played the damn thing.
1. Yes, a lot of the environments are recycled from FFX. That's to be expected in a sequel. The fun part is revisiting these places and finding new things to do. And for the record, not all the envirnoments were recycled. Many places you visit- like Kilika- are rebuilt from scratch.
2. Yes, Yuna has shed her religious beliefs- I don't know why this is surprising. *SPOILER* She actually shed them back in FFX. In FFX-2, she's still the same girl, just in different clothes.
3. The music- it's light, and not as grandiose as other Final Fantasies, but Square has to reinvent themselves once in a while. If every game they made was FF7, would they be the RPG giants they are today?
4. Square is going out of their way to make this game look as superficial as possible (maybe to appeal to a wider audience?), but rest assured, this is still a hardcore, sidequest filled RPG that allows for plenty of customization, and exploration.
5. Some are complaining about the all female cast. I say- what's wrong with that? I mean these are actually likeable characters, unlike Cloud "personality disorder" Strife, or that rude, [] Squall, or Meg Ryan... I mean Tidus, who was whinier than a four year old kid. Rikku may be a bit ditzy, but at least she's bearable.
6. For those guys who still keep going on about FF7 and how its the best, I have this to say.
AERIS IS DEAD. GET OVER IT.
Hopefully this review is helpfull. If not, press "NO" below.

I had this game pre-orderred. I have religiously played and loved the entire Final Fantasy series (VI is my favorite). The day came, I woke up early, sped to the game store, bought the strategy guide and game, sped home, drank some coffee (I assumed a long day of RPG playing would ensue).

Power on! Controller in hand, The menu screen looked beautiful. A+ so far. I started a new game.

The giddy anticipation started, making me weak in the knees, 20th Century drum roll at the beginning of Star Wars. Too much coffee. Didn't matter in the least. I was happy for once.

Then, some cheesy lines spouted from a cheesier looking character's mouth. "Y...R...P...In position!" and then the gag reflex hit me. Oh my god! What have they done to this beautiful series!

A embarassing Britney-Spears-esque dance routine followed. I could taste the coffe and stomach acid rising to tease the beack of my tongue. Bile mixed with water; luckily I swallowed in time.

I had to give it a chance. Hours of agonizing self-defeat, followed. The doubts. The repulsion. The denial! That's the last straw! Why was this happening! The sacrelige! Blasphemies; oh the humanity! This series has hit a low.

The peak has long passed ladies and getlemen. It was a sad day for video games, and darkness for the rest of eternity!

Set your time machines back to the early nineties so I can be happy again, God. You CAN'T just sacrifice plot for graphics.

How dare you sqaure-enix! I will forever know you as squaresoft! You should have died so that my memories of you would be pleasant, rather than seeing you dilapidate into this wreck! An Abomination!!!!

The game turned out alright. Not anything special.

This game has not much of a story it is just people finding spheres
and doing stupid missions. It seems that squaresoft has made battling a chore, like let's say one of your characters is about to die and you throw
a potion, to bad you have to wait for a slow bar to fill up making
boss battles horable and nearly immpossible. Every time you cast a spell do a skill or throw an item you wait for that same bar to fill up. The dress sphere system is a very badly setup because you get about five dress spheres at the beginning and game expects you to train all of them or boss battles will be even harder to win. They put many characters from FFX they are not much of a help and/or hostille to you. The main quest in this story is for Yuna to find Tidus even though he had already went to the farplain after she detroyed yu yevon because Tidus and Zanarkand were a faith dream. So I don't see why she would be looking for him if he is dead, but she still finds him somehow. I noticed that when you do missions there is not an immportant way to trigger another event, like talking to someone random in Gaudosalam and then you can get futher in the game. This game is over advertized and just
plain girly at some points I have not finished the game and don't plan to.
