The First Direct Sequel: Taking A Chance

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 4 / 8
Date: August 08, 2005
Author: Amazon User

Up until this title, Final Fantasy did not make direct sequels to their titles, leaving it up to the fans to write stories if they wanted too. Now, that tradition is broken and despite what people think, this is a honorable sequel to the ground breaking title "Final Fantasy X". Following the main heroine of the first story, Yuna, two years has passed since the event of FFX.

Yuna is sick and tired of restricting her life to pleasing others and putting off her life. While old habits die hard, Yuna still cannot turn away from people in need while she attempts to have fun. This story is more than just Charlie's Angels and sexy costumes for the battle system, its a well earned story about the reflection of Yuna. In the first story, Yuna faced so much turmoil and lies that the game left her off with this huge hole in her life.

While of course the games sales are a great deal based on the sex appeal, this story is a tribute to the woman inside Yuna. This story plainly tells you through the game that no matter who you try to be or how you try to dress, you are who you are. You need to find your way in life honoring who you truly are inside. The game presents this boldly as Yuna is thrown once again in centuries old lies, past love, and hopeful retribution. Final Fantasy X-2 is more than just a girls kick butt game, it honors the past Final Fantasy's in their lessons of being who you are in the face of danger.

Final Fantasy X-2 in all is not the best of the series but it has a complete story and most important of all for any game: it is fun to play. Final Fantasy X-2 will have you playing until the end and in the end, its a fitting game.

Gaming for entertainment.

I held off buying this game when it came about because I heard it was horrible, but when I did eventually purchase it, I was pleasantly surprised.

Firstly, this game is much lighter in tone and story than Final Fantasy X, its predecessor. Set to uplifting Jpop-style backing music, and featuring a lot a lot of "girl power" moments, you also get the feeling that it is only half serious in its attempt to capture the "girl gamer" audience.

The game follows Yuna, the lead female of Final Fantasy X, and her friends Rikku and Paine, in their vocation as sphere hunters "The Gullwings". It is revealed that Yuna became a sphere hunter with the hope of finding Tidus, her lost love and FFX's protagonist, although she has other goals also. Set two years after Final Fantasy X, a lot has changed both in Yuna's character and appearance -- which is remarked on a lot by acquaintances; FFX's Lulu remarks that she has "spread [her] wings" -- as well as in the world she inhabits. Since the fall of Sin and Yevon, a struggle for political power is on the brink of eruption between factions the Youth League and New Yevon, threatening Yuna's Eternal Calm, but don't be fooled into thinking that The Gullwings are overly anxious to get involved; it is the political nature of their job (as, it seems, he who controls the spheres controls Spira), and Yuna's high profile and altruistic nature that embroils them in the conflict -- and, due to the non-linear nature of the storyline, it's up to you whose side they take. The game's treatment of these complex issues is sometimes serious, sometimes light-hearted and sometimes surreal and idealistic. In terms of story, there is a lot more in this game than many give it credit for, although it does fall down on some aspects and is not as comprehensive as Final Fantasy X was.

Gameplay is much-altered, with battle sequences taking a step away from the heavily turn-based system we saw in Final Fantasy X and towards a slightly more dynamic setting than most Final Fantasies use. The job system hinges on changing your characters' outfits; a forgiving view would assume that this, at least, is a joke, but the dress-change sequences are fun. The story is non-linear, played from mission to mission with a few key events linking it together. There are opportunities to find out more about the main characters of Final Fantasy X-2 depending on which missions you do take part in, and events which happen later in the game are affected by choices made earlier on. This, coupled with the multiple endings, gives the game a high replay factor, facilitated by the fact that, unlike Final Fantasy X, you do not have to get bogged down in the finer aspects of the story.

All in all, although this game dips its toe into more complex issues, it is at heart fairly happy-go-lucky; although there may be elements of tragedy, in the gameplay at least comedy wins out. If you are expecting a heavy change-the-world style game of the likes of Final Fantasy VII or X, you will be disappointed, but if you go into this with an open mind and no higher expectation than just to have fun, you may just enjoy yourself.

I wasn't sure if this would be a good RPG or not but like most Final Fantasy RPGs it was fun and filled with adveture there are many challenges and it does get harder along the way but the outcome of the game will surprise you. I would recommended to play and complete Final Fantasy 10 before playing this otherwise you may be a little confused as to who certain characters are and what is going on.
A wonderful, fun, exciting game recommended for all.

Good Sequal to FF X

This was a good sequal to the FF X game however it did have it's flaws and wasn't nearly as involved story wise as FF X. If you loved the previous game and want a little more exploration of what happened after the end of FF X, then I'd grab this game.

A little mixed

Overall I liked this game, although many people dislike the dresspheres, I found them fun.

The main story wasn't the best, but there are so many mini games and side stories (as in some other FF games) and they are so much fun and really make the game. Paine is a great new character.

You MUST have the game guide to get the (cliche) perfect ending, and it is A LOT of work.

Confusing game, bad story, but good battles.

I was either being rushed or being confused on where to go. The game gives you little hint on how to move on with the missions or how to move on with the story line. The story gives you a lot of flexibility if you can manage to find it and make sense of it. But if you missed a particular cool item, you may have to restart the game all over to get it if you want it that badly.

The camera angles make it difficult to see where you are going. The graphics do not make it clear about where you can and cannot go. The radar map doesn't help much because it focuses on such a tiny area. I did not like the timed missions especially because of these things. This was a problem with both X and X2.

The story is a bit sappy and doesn't make a lot of sense. I don't like it. But that was the least of my issues.

The 90 pound main characters, ready to die of anorexia, have superhuman strength at times, yet at another times two of them were struggling to lift a 90 pound weight three feet to safety. Also, they appear to be dressed as low-rung prostitutes. Why don't they put some clothes on those poor girls? The dominatrix thing is not for me.

The two stars are entirely earned with the battles. The battle mode can be customized and really gives you a lot of strategy to work with. I found the battles just plain fun.

To summarize, the confusion and the ridiculousness of the near-naked 90 pounders was not worth it for me. A strategy guide is a must for this game.

If you begin with an open mind, you will like it. Trust me.

If you haven't played the Final Fantasy X before playing Final Fantasy X-2, then go out and play and beat Final Fantasy X. This will save a lot of moronic reviews from people who are bashing this game because Tidus isn't here or other characters being absent. These people obviously haven't played the first of these two titles and have no business bashing a plot they know nothing about.
Now for the review... Overall this is a great game in my opinion. A lot of new features such as dresspheres and garment grids are used. This game also features the return of the Active Time Battle system you may remember from Final Fantasy 7. Another feature never before seen in a Final Fantasy is the introduction of completion percentage. Depending on how you play the game and how much of the story you uncover, you gain completion percentage. Your completion percentage, and whether you talked to a certain old man in Chapter 3 and heard a certain whistle in the Farplane determines which ending you can gain. Overall this is a strong plot. If you just fly through the game and don't bother doing side quests, you will get a very simple plot. However by doing some detective work you can gain a multiple layered plot. Overall great game with great visuals. The voice acting is greatly improved also.

Pleasantly surprised

I didn't quite expect so much from a game that starts off with a pop concert in the middle of Luca stadium, but as I started to get into the game I saw how the story just seemed to fit together so nicely and how it wraps up a lot of the loose ends that came out of Final Fantasy X.

It seems that many of the reviewers that have posted here and have given the game less than 3 stars haven't really played it enough to understand why the game is designed the way it is. There is a reason that you can travel to any of the other previously visited sites at any time. The reason is because YOU drive the story and YOU are in charge of how you get to the end. You don't have to complete every sidequest just to get to the end, and how the story wraps up is entirely up to you.

I think the designers wanted to empower the game player to have some control of how the game ends based on decisions they make. I for one am a perfectionist so until I can get the game to 100% completion, I won't stop playing it.

As for the game mechanics itself, it took awhile for me to get used to the ATB system. You really had to make some quick decisions or you could get your butt kicked. I noted that one person mentioned that you get penalized for spell casting instead of attacking with button mashing. I find that analogy grossly inaccurate and misleading. In fact, as you advance in experience in your various Dresspheres, spell casting with spheres like those of the Black Mage or White Mage can become quicker, so much quicker that a spellcaster can actually get off their spells before your fellow members attack with weapons.

The Garment Grids and Dresspheres added so much variety to the way you can mold the fighting roles of Yuna, Rikku and Paine that it actually dwarfs the sphere grid system in Final Fantasy X. The variations are actually so numerous, you can't possibly fill them all out without spending hundreds of hours playing the game.

I am more than an avid RPG player, that's really all I play. I have played RPG's since pen and paper and through fledgling computer games like Zork, Bard's Tale and so on and so forth. I feel that this game truly provides that type of an adventure where you can have quite a bit of input into how the game unfolds. Believe me, if you spend a good 20 or so hours playing it you'll want to unlock every dressphere and garment grid that you can to make your playing experience a complete one.

Huge Surprise ( in a good way )

At fisrt, I was not even going to get this game. I did not like 10 and from what the magazines were saying as well as the reviewers, I thought "forget that" But, I did anyway and am very glad I did. I honostly think the is the second best final fantasy game I've played. I liked the mission based part of it. It brought something new and fun. This game really is a big surprise and very, very good!

Trying to be fair...

Compared to FFX, X-2 is a bit short, childish and sort of pointless. But I wouldn't say X-2 is simply a piece of junk. It does contain some new and interesting elements.
People usually like things that they are familiar with and reject things they are not. I think that's why people are yelling that X-2 is such a letdown. Because people are so used to the system of X which is such a perfect game and don't really want to adjust themselves to fit in the new system. I hated ATB when I first picked up this game and decided to give up. But after a couple of hours play it turned out kind of fun. The battle system requires you to design a good "first step" dressphere grid and choose different jobs for each character to defeat different enemies with different attributes.
Speaking of the downside of the game, there are quite a few. Most of the music is annoying, especially the one when you are on the ship. Except the beginning theme (where you choose "New game" and "Load game") which reminds me typical FF series, the rest is either childish or boring. The graphic isn't bad in terms of color and overview. But much details are missing from X, like real-time facial expression. The faces in X-2 are just so fake. These things make the game a little cheap.
X-2 is not as good as X, but that's all because X is such a perfect game. X-2 still has something interesting for FF fans to explore.
