The Best Game Ever

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 3 / 3

It makes me laugh how all the people who hate this game played it for all of 5 minutes. It's the most fantastic game I've ever played.
I just turned 16 on March 6th. I bought the game the day it came out, and I've been playing it ever since. I've beaten the game several times, approximately 9, and it hasn't gotten boring yet.
Although I shouldn't be playing this game, I'm not 'desensitized' and I don't feel like going out and killing someone either.
The Game has a lot more to it than once thought. A lot of people think that the game has little or no story, and that it's extremely linear. So what? There is actually a deeper story to this game, and a point. You ask yourself: Why is Cash on death row? Why isn't he close to his family? etc etc...and it's really fun to imagine other things. It's also pretty emotional to play. I don't feel uncomfortable with anything that goes on in the game, yet I still find myself yelling at the television when Cash is getting beat up or tazered or insulted. I feel sad when horrible things happen to Cash...and you can feel his anger from it.
The graphics in this game aren't bad, you don't really notice their quality. And even though the graphics aren't perfect (they're actually really good, don't start thinking bad things about it now) everything in the game is extremely detailed, right down to the gore. (The skull breaks in all different ways when you shoot someone in the head, it depends where)
The sound is definitly the best aspect of the game. It's different in every level, and it changes depending on whats going on. If nobody sees you, its quiet. If someone is actively searching for you, it gets pumped up a little more, and if they know where you are, it goes full blast intense. Even then, it still changes. It could be full blast, and get even more intense than that once you get closer to the enemy.
The sounds of the weapons and blood gushing and stabbing and other stuff is also very well done.
Overall, this game in my books would get a 9.6 out of ten. Some things could be changed a little, but it's the best game I've ever played.

A Little Sketchy...

I went out and bought this game the day it came out. I had heard very little about it and hadn't even seen a review or commericial. I bought it on the sole premise that it was from Rockstar. I have to admit that I am a little dissapointed.

The gameplay is okay. I'm not going to explain it in detail, there are other reviews on here that do that for me. However, one thing I will say is that the gameplay is VERY repetitive. All you do is hide...make noise...kill...repeat. Which can be fun for a while, but sooner or later you'll lose interest. Seeing the different kill scenes for each weapon is pretty cool, but over time you see the same scene over and over. On some levels you'll have one weapon and that's it. So on that level you get to see the stalkers get killed with, oh let's say a bat, 20 times. Cool for a little while, but it just doesn't hold you enough to keep playing.

However, I KEEP PLAYING! I don't know if I'm insane or just want to see if this game has an ending. There doesn't seem to be much story to the game. I'm not there yet, so maybe the ending will make the whole experience more fulfilling? I'm not sure.

On later levels you get to use guns(shotguns, sniper rifle, pistols, machine guns, etc.) However, once you get to that point, the game loses much of it's stealth gameplay. You kill one stalker with a gun, more stalkers come, you hide, wait for everything to calm down, then go kill one more stalker...repeat. Guns make noise, you can't be stealthy with a gun. Another annoying thing is that you can't carry many weapons. If you could carry a couple guns and a couple stealth weapons at a time, you could have a choice of whether to kill a stalker silently or blast him with a gun, depending on the situation. Lately I have been noticing myself rushing through levels just blasting everyone away rather than trying to perform executions.

I don't know. As the title of this review states...I'm a little sketchy on this game. I can only seem to play one level at a time. I play a level, get bored or fed up, turn it off for a while, then I'm back playing again in 20 minutes. It's kind of a love-hate relationship. All I can say is...Rockstar I hope you put MUCH MUCH more time and effort into your next GTA release...whenever that may be.

I would say rent this one before you buy, if you buy, because it is worth checking out. You'll either love it or hate it. Or in my case, just deal with it.

Greatest F***ing Game

I just recently rented manhunt and fell in love with it. I have never played a game that I have LOVED so much. I work for a toy company and wen people ask about the game i cant shut up about it. I honestly belive that Rockstar has made there best game yet. The reason there is so much brutality in the game, its because it can. It has a "Mature" so that would warn parents not to buy it for their kids who are under the age of at least 15. I tell parents all the time that it is a game not for lil ones. I notced this other review saying why so much brutality? Its because thats wut sells these days.

Don't Take It Too Seriously

This game is getting all kinds of heat for it's violent and vulgar nature. I'm not going to sit here and tell you its not that violent or not that vulgar, but I don't take this too seriously. The game should be taken for what it is...A GAME. Granted kids should not be allowed anywhere near this game because it is littered with swear words and is very violent. I am in full agreement that this game should have been rated AO (Adult Only) rather than Mature. But for the people that are saying that the game made them feel bad about themselves or that they felt they were becoming something evil are out of their minds. If you cannot separate a game from reality I say stay away from this game. I think it's good adult entertainment!

As far as the game goes, it is pretty enjoyable to play. There is a good amount of stealth and strategy involved. In fact, that is basically the premise of the game. Once you are able to sneak up on the "gangster" though, you don't do much but press one button to make the kill. Some parts you will have to do over, but it's pretty addicting in that when you die, you have little problem starting over and trying again. There are a decent number of save points so you won't play for an hour and then die and have to it all over again, which is nice.

Overall, I think that this is a good buy for adult and mature gamers. It would probably be a good idea to rent it first and see what you think, but remember not to take it too seriously because games shouldn't make you question your moral standards. They are just another form of entertainment.

Incredibly fun, but only one slight annoyance

This is by far the most compeling intense game i have ever played. When i stop playing the game, i leave the room with my heart pumping and my nerves frazzled.
If you want the gist of the game, read someone elses review.
The annoyance i have found in this game is:
-the characters swear a lot. My friend and I both agree that there is excessive swearing.
Oh yea, the violence. There are three executions for each weapon, regular, violent, and greusome, the greusome execution with the metal bat ammounts to choking a guy and then when he is on his knees, smashing his head into a million pieces. Like i read in another review, this game will slightly desentsitise you until you find your self laughing and cheering as you chop an onry hunters head off with a machete.
Most anyone can stomach the swearing and violence, but my opinion is, this game should not be played by anyone lower that a mature 14 yrd.
If you are a parent and you are think this game would be neat to buy for little jonny, make sure little jonny isn't the kind of kid that is a little freak and will go on a rampage with a shotgun or little league baseball bat!
(NOT IMPLYING ANYTHING, NO OFFENSE) You dont want one of thoes kids playing this game!
The graphics are great, the controls are great, but the story line and action shine above all.

Wow. My roommate rented this game for his PS2 last week. Since I usually just ignore him, I didn't even realize he was playing anything and I sat at my computer, thinking he was watching a movie because of the quality of the voice acting and sound effects. Imagine my surprise when I turned around to see that it was actually a video game!

He had rented it on Blockbuster's 6-Day "New release" policy. Out of curiosity, I picked up the controller one day to see what it was like. I played through the first few levels (slowly...very slowly...the game is rarely fast-paced, but it masters the art of suspense), not saving my game since I figured that after I got bored with it, I'd stop playing. After a few levels, I started saving my game and kept going.

Now, I'm NOT a gamer. I have friends who are and can fly through games with immense skill; who consider cheat codes and walkthroughs a travesty. I, on the other hand, rarely complete a game without a cheat code or walkthrough. This was the first game in years I beat without cheat codes or walkthroughs, just by try and try again...because it made me want to win. It made me want to kill the man who had done this to "my" life. The man controlling the game's protagonist.

Yes, I beat the game. I beat it before it even had to be returned, and trust me, it was not an easy task. However, after beating it, I felt an enormous sense of pride. Manhunt is my new obsession.

Like I said, the voice acting is superb. SUPERB. You will not find better voice acting in a game. The graphics are great, but they're no Halo. The sound is realistic and frightening. It...wow. I can't stop raving about this game. Ten out of ten stars.

My only gripe? The last boss (and, technically, the second boss...Piggsy and The Director are your only real bosses in the game, and they both come in the last level) is rather anti-climactic. He's not a challenge, but I still felt happy when I killed him!

What the hell were you expecting?!

If you didn't guess by the title that this was a gore fest then you are a moron. I personally like this game, good stress remover, but those who complain about story are fools, look folks this isn't role playing game meant to entertain you in high and intellectual ways, this is meant to satisfy a bloodlust, thats all, and as stupid as that sounds thats all the game is meant to be so instead of pointing out what it lacks in plot enjoy what it brings to the table in pure blood-soaked fun.

Sick, but fun.

When I first got my PS2, I made a point for the first game I bought to be Manhunt. I had heard the hype, and have had friends tell me I should "at least see it". I was expecting gore and horror and thrill killing, but I wasn't expecting a game this well thought out.

The plot: You are James Earl Cash, convicted murderer on death row. After you are taken for lethal injection and given a knock-out drug instead of the real thing, you wake up in slum part of town being watched by hidden cameras and directed from an ear-piece. You are the star of a snuff-film, your mission: kill, savagely!

Sound: Sound is vital in this game. You are doing a lot of hiding and sneaking around, so even your footsteps can alert roaming killers looking for you. For that reason, there isn't a lot of music or walking around sound effects. The voice acting, most notably Brian Cox was fantastic! While playing it the first time, I was listening to the director's voice and thinking "this guy sounds a lot like the creepy pedophile from L.I.E.", sure enough! Perfect casting! Some of the lines he says are as chilling and funny as hell at the time, you want to laugh but you know it's really disturbing.

Gameplay: Most of the game, you are sneaking around and whacking people from behind. There are modes for stealth, hiding in shadows, you can even misdirect enemies by throwing objects in a direction (again, where sound is so important). The first weapon you get is a plastic bag (for strangling) and you move up as you go along to knives, handguns, shotguns, automatic weapons and finally the chainsaw.

Enemies: Street thugs, insane asylum inmates, neo-Nazis, cops, paramilitary, and Piggsy (which really disturbed me). Dispatch them all, because enemies do not relent and one good shot from a gun can end your game really quick (no "1-ups" in this game, you die, you stay dead).

Overall: This game is meant for adults of stabile minds. No children, no teens, no one with psychological issues should play this game. If you are certain you are not going to go on a kill crazy rampage after finishing this game, then give it a chance. Plus, it's always fun to sneak up behind a white supremacist and send him straight to hell (in the game, of course).

A Very Good Addition to the Stealth Genre by Rockstar North

Manhunt is not for action junkies. After several enemy encounters (and a considerable loss of life) you will find that Manhunt is a stealth action game in possibly its purest form. Unlike the Metal Gear / Hitman / Tenchu series of games there is no avoiding enemies and survival only comes from killing your enemies with silence and silence alone. Stages do not progress without dispatching of every enemy.

Rockstar has done an exceptional job with producing nerve-wrecking environments and the dark atmosphere and music does much to draw the player into the experience. The sound is definately the games highlight. Graphically Manhunt is a solid title and the effort does Rockstar proud. Although the control is a little different at first - it does become intuitive.

But most of all its the games' ability to put the player at ease that sets Manhunt apart from any game before it. The commentary by Director Starkweather and the dialogue of the enemy is sick and twisted. When combined with the well designed environments and ambient music - the game player finds themselves inexplicably nervous and worried. Often I'll forget that I can redo the stage and feel like the first chance is the only chance. That's a pretty rare feeling.

Manhunt has all the bases covered for a solid stealth action title, but combines it with the bone-chilling feel of a survival horror action game. Everything in the game is very good, nothing totally spectacular, but I give it a firm recommendation for anyone looking for a different and involving video game experience.

NOTE: The cut-scenes that take place during enemy executions are as gruesome as anything which has come before it. It is not for the faint at heart.

Hide-and-seek to the death

More like 3.5.

This is a stealth game in the Splinter Cell/Hitman tradition with urban grit and ultra-violence as the goal.

If you like getting into fights head-on, this is not your game. Your character is thrust into a world where you have to sneak in the shadows, use noise distraction to attract your enemies, and come up with creative ways to finish them off to advance. One of the most graphically violent games ever, taking the blood out of the game wouldn't really begin to make this adventure more tame.

The graphics are primo, the engine solid and the sound impeccable. I'd have liked more options to fight with - maybe a combo or two - but it plays pretty swell in the end. Think of it as hide-and-seek to the death. Could get a little boring for people used to the manic runnings of Vice City or any fighting game, since you really have to use strategy here to succeed, not brawn.

Not even CLOSE to being for children or the faint of heart.
