The only thing you are left wanting is a sequel

I have played several racing games... everything from amazing simulations like Grand Turismo 3 A-Spec, less realistic yet all the more exciting games like the Midnight Club Racing series, and of course... the downright horrible games, like Supercar Street Racing. That having been said, I don't think I can pinpoint one other game that offers the pinnacle of all around action packed gaming pleasure that Need for Speed Hot Pursuit II offers.
There are several play modes, from conventional challenges and a championship series, to more exciting and difficult races in which you have not only the other racers to contend with, but also the boys in blue... and their roadblocks, spike-strips, and barrel-dropping helicopters.
Gameplay is fantastic, thanks to an amazing driving engine, incredible graphics, and (real) jaw-dropping supercars. Unlike some games, here you have your pick from a wide variety (49 total) cars from high end manufacturers like Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, Aston Martin... even McLaren, as opposed to most other games in which the cars are made-up or limited to one or two manufacturers.
The progression is worth noting as well, and lends itself to a lengthy and enjoyable experience, with infinite customization possibilities even after you have beaten the game and unlocked all of the cars.
Overall, I would consider this to be by far the best all-around racing game out there if you are looking for excitement and jaw-dropping gameplay with a variety of obstacles to spice things up.
My only gripe? After beating the game, I thought that just MAYBE it was a little bit too easy. I only had to play the last championship races once to win, and throughout the entire championship series I won every event on the first attempt save for maybe one race. Still, it was a lengthy and enjoyable experience and the game still has plenty of replay value once you have mastered all of the events! A definite MUST-HAVE for any PS2 owner.

Oh... little *tip* - to boost your points (unlock cars faster), during the race, while passing the finish line after a lap (but not the last lap), press L2 to do a camera rotation while your rear wheels are ON the checkered starting line stripe. GOOD TIMING IS OBVIOUSLY NECESSARY... if you can manage to do a camera rotation showing your car passing the starting line with rear tires on the black/white stripe, you will receive about 180,000 points (finishing an average race without doing this trick yields about 9,000-15,000 points, so this is a major boost)

I've played the demo for this game on the Official Playstation Magazine Issue #61, and it is not what I've expected. The game looks like it could be played on the PS One...Yes there are moments that can be fun in the game...I'll stick with my demo & not buy this game.

A definite must have

This is a definite must have in a library of games for the Driving enthusiast. Although this game is great, I've played a sample, it still isn't GT3, which it shouldn't be. I felt the cars were a little too loose. The gameplay is awesome and things move quickly. I was hoping that we'd still be able to race our friends and take there cars! THe Police chases are much more wicked than usual as well. Graphics and shadowing are almost realistic. This will surely hit my top ten list of games.
This jhondra is only going to get better in the coming years.

A review from the perspective of a Hot Pursuit fan

I love a good racing game, but I love a good chase even more. NFS 3 has been my favorite on both pc and PS1. I loved Porsche Unleashed on the PC -- slinging a Carerra 2 around corners through France is awesome, but I sorely missed the cops, even the brain dead ones from High Stakes. I'll let others write about this compared to Porsche Unleashed or GT3 and simulation racing -- this is my impressions of the true subject of the game: Hot Pursuit!

The good: Tons of cars. Tons of huge tracks with runoff room and many short alternate routes. Depending on the game mode, the tracks can either be circular laps or point-to-point. Decent graphics, not a lot of popup, great sensation of speed. Lots of different game modes, ranging from straight racing to hot pursuit to "mission" type events of both types. The police chatter varied and is well done, and the cops seem to work together to stop you. The mostly useless roadblocks in High Stakes have been replaced with obstacles that take a little more effort to get around. Spike strips no longer force you to stop, but you won't get far on your rims. :) I can't decide if I like the choppers dropping barrels or not. They are totally ridiculous, sure, but they are a challenge. Similarly, those old Crown Vic cops are able to keep up because of some kind of Nitrous injector -- you can see flames shooting from their tailpipes. Cheesy, yes, but it keeps the cops on your $120,000 tail.

The bad: No night driving or weather. You can change atmosphere on tracks between sunny and overcast but I've yet to see any weather effects. For me this is not a huge issue, but I liked taking the occasional night drive to watch the pretty swirling lights in the night. :) There are also segments of tracks which are invisibly walled -- or rather, they are visibly walled unconvincingly by a "natural" rail of some sort. The cops, though smarter than the ones in HS, are less wild. They always start from a standstill at the side of the road in the same direction of you. I miss having to swerve past kamikaze cops trying to T-stop in front of you.

The ugly: The physics of this game blow, even from an arcade standpoint. I wasn't expecting GT3 handling here -- remember I'm looking at this from a Hot Pursuit standpoint. Which means I want to be shouting "Yee hah!" as three cops tumble through the air along side me after a good tag right as we left the ramp, and praying that my vehicle lands on its wheels so I can speed away before backup arrives. Watching replays used to be a blast just for the wrecks, no matter how exaggerated. That will never happen in this game. You can't flip over. Ever. I spent a good half hour trying to do it. Cars for the most part are stuck to the road, even with the jumps scattered throughout the game. You can go up on your side maybe 30 degrees but then some invisible force pushes you back on all fours. It's the same for every vehicle in the game, cop, racer or traffic. Collisions either stop your vehicle cold, or push the offending object backwards and to one side until it moves out of the way. There's no sensation that you could totally lose control at any time, losing valuable time as your vehicle slides down the road on its roof. I've spun out sometimes on sand or grass, but most of the time you can run at full throttle and not worry about the consequences. There is a "damage" selection on the menus but I can't tell if it affects anything other than the vehicle's appearance.

I'll let other people talk about the racing aspect of the game, but from the chase aspect and for being a sequel to the original Hot Pursuit, this has been very disappointing. IMHO, rent it before you buy it!

The Fast and Furious, NFS LIVES!!!!!

Ok i saw the demo too, and thought what a waste of a fine franchise the new Hot Pursuit game was going to be. I wasn't even going to buy it. I just crossed it off my list all together. After hearing a glowing review from a friend though I went out and picked it up that night, and am now completely hooked!!! The graphics are very sharp, and rich, and full of crisp colors and reflections. The engine noise of each car all sound different to me and very rich in tone (bet it kicks ... on the surround sound!), and have heard that a certain Prancing Horse marque sounds dead on like the real thing!! My hat is off to EA cuz this game has the BEST soundtrack that I have ever heard in a game!!! The challenges are tuff, but do not feel impossible, and you can unlock cars just by scoring enough points, which was also a nice touch. So if you are looking to get back into NFS for your PS2, and you aren't sure. Rent it if you are skeptical, but if you like to gamble. Then take my advice, and am pretty sure that you will not be disappointed! Happy Speeding!!!!!

The game is a mixed bag. It excells in some points, and falls short in other areas. Compared to the previous NFS PC installments the shortcomings are pronounced.

This game is strictly an arcade style game, even though there are event trees for hot pursuit and world racing modes.

The game is fast, and that is usually something most racing games promise and fail to deliver. The action in hot pursuit mode is intense, and non-stop. The police AI is really good and they are a lot smarter than in previous games. Another great improvement are the alternate tracks in a race, the spike strips are huge, and the view distance is great. The police helicopter is a nice eveolvement, but gets carried away. The graphics are very good in this game, and so is the sound! Although there is occasional fram rate slow down. Grabbing some air is new to the series, and a good addition.

The game is short. I finished the hot pusuit tree in a day. The learning curve is short, and the only real skillful driving you need is to help the cops meet other cars and obstacles, to lose them. Completing the tree unlocks a bonus event AND the steering wheel view of the game. (Completing hot pursuit and world racing unlocks another event in each tree). Driving in steering wheel view after learning the courses is fun. The event trees are still linear, even though you pick which branch to go to next. Cars are pre-selected, and you can't upgrade them. At times the action gets unrealistic, as it becomes impossible to avoid the mines the helicopter drops and setting one off can push you into the next only to be followed by a missile from the helicopter. So skillful driving does not always have it's rewards.

You unlock cars and tracks as you progress. But since they are only available in challenge mode, it doesn't seem worthwhile. (By the way, the Opel Speedster and the Vauxhall VX220 are identical cars built at different plants). It would have been great to have choices in the campaigns. I only tried one race in world racer, but it was unchallenging. Without the cops it was to easy.

Racing games have evolved to include depth, and going back to arcade style is not retro, it's just a loss of replayability. This game should have been more in the format of NFS high stakes, where you could choose between arcade style and a career style that had some depth. There you could go back to tracks and events with newer, faster cars.

Ultimately the game is still good and worth having. Even with all the drawbacks the game still grips you, and it is fun. EA needs to beef up the next NFS. Buying more than one game in this format is just not worthwhile.
