My favorite PS2 racing title

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 0 / 1

I am not one of those racers who can only play Gran Turismo. In fact, don't give me realism. Give me cars that I can whip around a street at over 100 miles an hour--let me crash into a rail and break the windshield, but let me keep on going afterward. Give me awesome track designs in exotic locations, sunsets, oceans, meditereanean vistas. Give me surround sound stereo where I hear the guy I just cut off crash behind me. That's all in Need for Speed: High Stakes 2! If you played this title in earlier incarnations, you have high expectations. This version will not disappoint. This NFS title has a racing challenge ladder for both cop chases and regular racing, it will take quite a while to get through all of them. By clearing each level in both of the challenge modes, you unlock cars and new levels to try. The graphics are beautifully done, very smooth and fast, and the course design is extremely well thought out. There are many shortcuts to try, and you will receive bonus points for jumping over hills--and also will receive a Matrix like "slow motion" scene that not only renders your car but whatever cars are nearby. I think if you are a NFS fan, or a fan of arcade racers, this is a must have game for the PS2.

You are speeding down a wooded road in your high speed performance automobile and you see a fire in the distance ahead. When you get up beside it, and the firefighters battling it, the cop car that has been viciously harassing you for the last ten miles slams you into the wall under the fire. As you are trying to gain back control and get the hell out of there you happen to see a burning sign beside the trees, it reads: "Only you can prevent forest fires." You manage a simple "heh" as you press the start button to restart the race and hope for a better result. Welcome to Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit II, the most unbalanced game *ever* to still come out on top.

Saying that NFS: HS II can be a bit cheap at times is like saying Mike Tyson has a bit of a temper, but that's not the whole story. The game is broken into two overall parts: World Racing and Hot Pursuit. World Racing is basically the same game as any other arcade racer you've ever played, but better. Hot Pursuit, as it's namesake would have you assume, is a jacked up (and off, but I digress) version of it's father which was found in the grand daddy of all Need For Speed games (that would be 3, in case you've been sleeping in video game class). Since this series is working towards more sequels than Street Fighter and the biggest difference here is the lack of comprehensive information, pictures, and videos for each car, I'll just get to a list of pros and cons:

Pros:
* Beautiful locations
* 49 exotic cars perfectly modeled after their real life counter-parts
* Large and well constructed courses, especially the point-to-points
* A decent radio rock soundtrack with Bush and Uncle Krackerleading the charge
* Computer catch up in case your little bro can't keep up with you
* Spot on control and well thought out button configurations
* Mildly entertaining pursuit radio chatter

Cons:
* While casual play in the hot pursuit mode may be fun, going through it's "Ultimate Racer" mode is like having your 12 year old cousin practice her acupuncture on you with your mothers sewing needles
* Cops act like unfed pigs on a dead body, and they think you're the dead body (literally only you, which is the problem. While police cruisers will chase every character the bulk of the assault is targeted at you. This includes, but is not limited to: Blockades, spike strips, kamikaze cruisers, and a helicopter that drops bomb barrels and spike strips and fires heat seeking missiles [wait, when did *I* become the heat])
* Many jagged edges, trees, and poles in the courses to dead halt your car
* Police cruisers do not, I repeat *do not,* go as fast as the Mclaren F1 in reality, thank you very much
* Radio rock, for crying out loud
* Computer catch up in case the computer can't keep up with you
* The police could use a good education to learn the difference between a suspect and a perpetrator
* Could we possibly get a more in-depth replay mode over here, please?

With that I will leave you and let you know that NFS: HS II is not quite as great of a game as the original Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit, but it's prettier and you ain't got much else to choose from. So if you've got the need for speed (I'm sorry I used that, I really am) then buy this game and have your obsessive compulsive completist uncle unlock everything for you.

If you've played GT3, then don't expect the same driving experiences with NFS/HP2. Although the graphics and animation are terrific, programmers forgot to penalize the player as you would if you were actually driving a real car. After all, isn't that the whole idea ???? If you drive into a tree or a side of a mountain, shouldn't your car pretty much cease ? Or if you drive in sand, leaves, or gravel for a shortcut then it should be loaded with the risk/reward factors.

Take a lesson from one of the great racing games that I think competes with GT3 today and that is TOCA Racing.

This game is the best NFS game ever! It is difficult and a great challenge. While in world racing and hot pursuit modes you are chased by cops and also now in the newest NFS you get chased and shot at by a HELICOPTER!! It is wonderful!...This is an extreme game so prepare yourself for some great gaming!

This is going to be short and sweet-If you've ever played any of the Hot Pursuit versions that have been released, you will enjoy this one. It has great graphics as everyone has mentioned, the soundtrack is ok also although rap would have been nice instead of just rock and techno or at least more techno. The wide variety of cars and tracks is a big plus. I got a Ferrari up to 200mph+. This is truly one of the best racing games I've played. True enough, it's not a whole lot of real simulation but then it's not Gran Turismo either. It's a hot title.

I'm goin' to keep it short 'n' sweet. Good graphics, tight whips (cars) including; Dodge Viper GTS, Ford Mustang SVT Cobra, Lambourghini Murcielago, the Diablo VT 6.0, the McLaren F1 (one of the fastest whips in the game) and McLaren F1LM and numerous Ferrari's and many more! Earn points by performing jumps off ramps, beating the cops, runnin' road blocks. (Earnin pts. will earn you cars. Beat levels in Hot Pursuit Ultimate Racer mode or the World Championship mode to get better cars). You race at high speeds as the cops chase you through crowded streets. This game is worth buying. Trust me. If you like racing games you'll like Hot Pursuit 2. I have a feelin' NFS Underground is goin' to be tight too. I'd cop (get) that game out too.

Cool game

This game is so great! It has very very very good graphics, I think the graphics are better than GT3. This game has the hottest sports cars, like Ferrari modena, spider, F50, etc. Also has Lamborgini's, Porsche, Mclaren, a lot more great car's.
You can play multiplayer, which I really like because I always like racing against my friends side by side in a race. This game allows you to get chased by the cops or you can be the cop!. There are 49 cars (total). The tracks that play on this game are great. you can go off road to take a short cut etc. I have always been a NFS fan ever since their first game came out. This game is deffinetly worth buying! Oh and don't listen to Dan's review! He is totally wrong! He said in his review that you can't even use brake and cant turn, and you slide all over the track! He is pretty damn stupid because YOU CAN TURN AND USE BRAKE WHENEVER YOU WANT AND YOU DONT SLIDE ALL OVER THE TRACK Dumb A$$!!! any way I this game deffinetly is worth the full five stars!
