Depends on how you look at it....

I have all the original ps Spyro games, and so of course I bought this one... and yes it's different and not as good engaging as the others. The graphics are nice, it's the first game I've played on ps2 though, and the load times are pretty LONG. And yes it's incredibly short. And it's just not as good as the others, really. But if that were it, I'd still give it 4 or 4.5 stars, because I think those differences are just because Insomniac didn't make this one. However, this game is BUGGY, and very much so. The Speedways don't work- you can't win, every time I play them, I pass the other racers but my rank doesn't change. Control of spyro is pretty weak, too... and it freezes, but it helps to set your ps2 speed to fast instead of standard. The sound gets stuck, playing over and over, scenery disappears, and a few times I've gotten stuck in walls and such, that certainly SHOULDN'T have happened... and there are VARIOUS other things like that, and I'm only half way through it. If you're really a Spyro fan, I'd wait. Spyro 3 had a serious bug, and they eventually released a fixed version. Hopefully they'll do the same for this one. Until then, it's only really nice for true spyro fans, and even then it's frustrating and disappointing.

Game's ok

I'm a little disappointed in the game. The graphics are beautiful, but it takes FOREVER for the game to load. The camera doesn't move as fast I'd like. I seems like Spryo is slower and not as responsive as in previous games

How can this be considered a (great) game?

I think that perhaps there are two versions of this game out there- because there are people who say that its great, and then there are the people like me who are very disappointed. I never found Sparx, btw, he just sort of appeared at my side after the movie saying he was gone. I agree with the other reviewer who was saying how the sound gets stuck- which is really irratating.
Ok: my beef-

I played both the first and the second Spyro games last year, and was impressed enough to buy the fourth for PS2. It is so horrible. I beat the whole thing in like 8 hours, which is ultimately pathetic since I am one of those people who can't get past the first boss in Zelda: Ocarina of Time for N64 (I'm not exaggerating). This game has only one world, ten or so levels and one boss. The wait between the zones is really long- up to 15 minutes, and there is no challenge to the mind like the other Spyro games. It's either really hard or really easy. The hard stuff is just impossible and annoying and tedious. The levels are completely confusing. The camera is really bad- sometimes you can't see anything at all. I've gone through so many walls it's not funny, and in the honey level everything disapeared- I was walking on nothing. The bonus levels are decent, but too easy for bonus levels. Catching the loose dragonflies is a real pain, but expectedly so. The grafics are the same as in the first Spyro, most of the scenery looks taken straight out of the other games with newer grafics pasted on top. The movie explaining the "plot" that is supposedly at the beginning was given to me at the end of the game. I beat Ripto almost by accident. I lost 9 lives beating him, but since I had 56, it didn't matter. And I didn't go looking for lives, either.

To sum up- this game was way too short, pathetically animated, completely easy, without challenge, and a sorry addition to the fun and enjoyable rest of the Spyro series. It was almost as bad as Vampire Hunter D for PS one, and trust me, nobody should ever be forced to play that outside of heinous torture.

Let's make this quick and short...

Please do not purchase this game.

I have been a huge fan of Spyro since I was, oh, about 4 or 5. It was the first game I purchased when I recieved my Playstation as a present. All of the original games were exciting, fun to play, with memorable characters, beautiful landscapes, and an original plot.

A couple years ago, I got sick, and as a get well present, my parents bought me a Playstation 2, along with Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly. I stuck it in the machine, started playing, and became very disappointed.

The loading time between levels took extremely long, and my game had many glitches. I traded it for another copy of the game, which had glitches as well. This went on for about 8 different copies of Spyro 4, until my parents refused to take me out to exchange it anymore. My current game has a serious glitch in the first level, where all the landscapes are purple, and the dragonflies are frozen in place, and if I attempt to rescue them to machine freezes. Since I can't get any dragonflies, I am unable to move forward in the game.

The graphics are good, but they are too bright and smoot for my tastes, and when there is a delay between an action and the sound it makes, so that when you run into sheep, or the like, no sounds come out until a couple of seconds after it explodes, which is rather odd to watch.

My opinion.

Good game!

I bought this for my daughter for Christmas but only after we had rented it to see if it was worth buying. It is a good game in its own right, though I have to agree with the other reviewers that Insomniac did a much better job. But I still like the Spyro series. It is challenging, neither my daughter nor myself have gotten bored or frustrated with the game. The different breathes that Spyro has is pretty cool. I've seen some of the other reviews say that their graphics have frozen, they had problems with the sounds and that Sparks is not with Spyro and then suddenly he will appear. I'm a little confused by that as my daughter and I have not experience any of these problems with this game either on the rentals or the one that I just purchased last month. We have had very good luck with this game and ours of enjoyment. It is very challenging in my opinion. About my only real and main complaint is the price of the game - everyone has it so outrageously priced. Other than that it is a good game.

Surprisingly, not as good

I am a huge fan of Spyro. The first game I ever got for my original Playstation. Obviously, I was anxiously awaiting the newest version for PS2. Sadly, I am disappointed. In one evening, I have seen pretty much of the worlds that there are to see. There are only 12. Which I thought surprising given the vastness of the other three versions.

But perhaps the worst part was the jumpy camera. As you move around, the camera can't keep up with you and then does this funky thing where everything around you seems to go in slow motion.

Some of the graphics are good. But stacking this against the likes of Sly Cooper and Ratch and Clank, I fear our little dragon may have lost a little of his sheen.

If this game is ANYTHING like the first three, then buy it.

Spyro has to be one of the coolest games on the planet! You are a small purple dragon who goes through all of these cool portals and has flame breath! This game is so cool it's hard t describe, but it is a must. Also, it's not like a death arena shoot 'em up. I know alot of parents who are looking for and alternative to all of the killing. Here, there are no guns, no bazookas, not flamethrowers, no blood! You do destroy bad guys, but you do not blast them, my friends younger sister loves the game and she's only 7! This is a must for all ages! I also recomend all of the other versions. Spyro, Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage and Spyro: Year of the Dragon.

Is Spyro's PS2 launch really worth it?

This game disappointed me in many ways. For example it takes AGES to load (about 5 minutes) and the graphics are not as brilliant as expected. There are also a few glitches, such as in the speedways, you remain 3rd unless you fly through all the blue speed-boost stars. On rare occasions the level 'Cloud 9' doesn't even load!.
The good bits are the new breathe abilities. Spyro can now freeze and electrocute opponents as well as the traditional flame attack and catch the dragonflys with bubble breath. The levels are also quite imaginative as well and the slide mini-games are fun.
The puzzles are very challenging and as a 16 year old , I found them very hard. Imagine the disappointment in a young child?
All in all I recomend you try before you buy! this game is not what i expected! julesy.

Can I enter no stars?

Yikes. Could this be any worse? For one, the frame rate is horrible and definitely not nearly on par with the previous three games, which, for the previous reviewer, were made by Insomniac Games, not by the company who produced (or shall we say butchered?) this game.

If you're a fan of Insomniac's genius, check out their newest game Ratchet & Clank. This blows even the good Spyro games away!

What went wrong? The Spyro games had a good reputation as being fun and challenging. This game is neither.First of all there are only NINE levels, compare this to the 25+ levels of previous Spyro titles. These nine levels are way too easy.It can take as little as Ten minutes to beat a level, thats definately not challenging to me.
Now lets talk about the worst part of the game, the endless glitches. This is undoubtedly the glitchiest game I have ever played.I have played cheap ten dollar games that have not glitched so much.Simple things such as moving the character cannot be achieved without experiencing glitches. This is very unreasonable.Certain levels cannot be accessed, this is unacceptable.Certain objectives cannot be completed, this too is just unacceptable. This is a total waste of money. When you spend your hard earned cash on something, it should work. This game DOES NOT!
