Unworthy of Spyro. Terrible.

Well, my wife and I have been huge Spyro fans since he first arrived on PS1. We were very excited to discover he was returning for PS2. Playing the game itself, however, led to huge dissappointment. This game is poorly made, with looong load times, graphics that slow down then speed up erratically, making for verey frustrating gameplay, and more than once, the game froze up entirely. I had hoped my copy was simpy screwy, but subsequent copies have proved just as bad. If you truly enjoy Spyro, stick with the first three for PS1, because this game offers nothing. Very dissappointing.

It ain't no Insomniac Game

I REALLY was nervous about buying this game. I had heard the graphics froze, that it was too fast, and that you couoln't go back after finishing the game. My mom told me to rent it first, but the games were always checked out. I couldn't resist.
In some ways, the game was a lot better than my expectations. The graphics, while cheesy and poor compared to past Spyros, were alright in their own way, and never froze up. But in other ways, this was much worse than I thought.
First of all, this is the frist PlayStation Spyro NOT made by Insomniac Games. Those people at Insomniac were really dedicated people. They never made a sequel rushed or buggy to get it out fast to make money off it by selling it on their previous games. All of their games were bug-free (almost; no serious bugs are on any Spyro games now), detailed, realistic, and fun to play. Equinox Entertainment, the creators of this game, need lessons from Insomniac. They might have tried hard, but this game appears to habve been rushed to sell off of Spyros 1, 2, and 3. Many of the dragfonfly callenges are too hard. You can't find the targets. Moneybags, Bianca, and Hunter only appear once (so far in my game). After catching a dragonfly, Sparx often gets stuck in one place and won't follow you or eat. You can run right through him. The character designs and graphic look are far too altered and terrible compared to past Spyros.
However, this game does have it's strong points. The different breaths, especially electric, are nice. Spyro gets lines in places other than the movies. And while different, Spyro 4's worlds look beautiful in their own way. Sparx's bug can be fixed by pausing the game.
All in all, this is a large disappointment. Only buy it if you are an absolute Spyro fanatic.
I'll give the game a 5/10

I was VERY VERY disappointed after purchasing & trying to play this game... The graphics are good, BUT, the game is soooo sluggish & it skips frames badly. I got very frustrated & gave up... A previous reviewer nailed it on the head when they said it didn't even appear that it was tested before it was released... it is that bad...

I have & played all the other Spyro games too & I was anticipating & hoping this would be of the previous Insomniac caliber... Alas, I did not have the patience to play it.

Not Insomniac?

Like many other reviews, I was kind of disappointed too.But did anyone notice it is not made by Insomniac anymore, but now JUST by Universal Interactive. That's why I think it was worse than the Spyro's made by Insomniac too, now that I think I know why it was worse, I still LOVE Spyro but don't like the game by Universal Interactive. If you like Spyro, you should get Ratchet and Clank. It is much better than Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly and it is made by Insomniac, the same makers of Spyro 1-3.It's great!

This is not Insomniac's Spyro.

I played this Spyro game first and found it flat and tedious. Everything in it feels like a chore rather than a challenge. It feels like gameplay balance was a secondary consideration, if that.

Recently, I had the pleasure of playing one of the older Spyro games for the PSX and I realized that this newer game is just a rehash of material that Insomniac gave us in earlier Spyro games--but this PS2 Spyro lacks the charm and gameplay of the Insomniac games. It all feels like someone bought the rights to Spyro and just slapped together a game--glitchy, uninspired, and graphically deficient. In fact, the PSX graphics in the earlier games are almost as good as those in "Enter the Dragonfly;" ETD looks for all the world like they simply took the models used for the PSX and rendered them at PS2 resolutions. Embarrassing. The only enjoyable thing about this game is the music.

Spyro creator Insomniac Games has moved on to "Ratchet & Clank," and I suggest that Spyro fans do the same.

If this is the Spyro of the future, stick with the Spyro of the past: for less than the price of ETD, you can buy all 3 of the vastly superior Insomniac Games Spyro titles.

Not Much New HERE!!

All of the Spyro games rolled into ONE, but in slower motion! PS2 games are NOT "Faster Paced or Fast Loading"!! Just a BORE all around!!

I rented this game for a week before I bought it, even though I'm a huge fan of the series, because I was skeptical of what Universal might have done to it. I got tired of it in a little over two hours.
The Cons: The camera angles are horrible (and, you can't control it, like in previous Spryo games). The game is filled with glitches (frequent freezing). It takes about 1 minute to load between worlds (honestly). The storyline and characters are nothing new (the entire plot is more like a mixture of earlier Spyro games). The music was irritating and repetative. The controls are horrible, as you are almost forced to use the joystick. There aren't nearly as many mini games as in erlier Spyro games (even the ones it has are usually very similar to one another, and most are frusturating). I could go on, but I'll move on the the pros.
The Pros: The graphics were slightly better than the last two that appeared on the PS1, however they are usually insignificant (things such as water ripples deing more defined, etc.). There was small bit of nvelty to it (the different elemental attacks).

I can honestly say I woudln't recommend this game to ANYONE. People new to the series should go buy either Ripto's Rage, or Year of the Dragon, as both are much better than this one. I wouldn't even recommend this game to Spyro vetrerans and hardcore fans, as they, like myself, will be very disappointed. I'm getting pretty sick of Universal buying out all my favorite games, then ruining them.

Worst Spyro EVER, worst PS2 Game, EVER.

This is the glitchiest, messiest, most unpolished, unfinished and utterly unprofessional game I've ever played. I'm not kidding.

The framerate is terrible (This things slows down to 12 fps A LOT), the graphics pop in and out and it's just not anywhere near the quality of the previous 3 Spyro games on the PS1, either technically or artistically.
I can't believe they've made such a mess of the Spyro series. I'm sure diehard Spyro fans will just go out and buy it anyway, but if you look on the back of the packaging, you'll notice something missing from it. There is no Insomniac games logo. Insomniac created the original 3 Spyro games on the PS1 and didn't have anything to do with this awful version. Huge shame.

If you want to remember Spyro as a fun, good-looking, classic platform game, then don't buy this sad version. Just play the original 3 again and enjoy them.
If you want to remember Spyro as an awful, funless mess with huge load times, choppy animation and ponderously dull levels, then buy this game. You'll feel cheated and sorry. Spyro's magic is gone now, perhaps forever.
If you want to see where the magic went, buy Insomniac's Ratchet and Clank instead. This is the real Spyro 4 in my book.

Horribly disappointing

What's wrong with this game? Let me count the ways...

1. Speed. Dropping gems fall so slowly they look like they're
on the moon, and Spyro himself is running on two cylinders and
a flat. (and, considering the controls, a half dozen beers).

2. Controls. They just don't feel right, but this could be
partly due to the speed issue. Jumping is annoying, and
hovering is quite difficult. It's hard to steer during a
charge, and the camera gets in the way.

3. Sound and graphics. Some of the sound is pretty nice, such
as near waterfalls, but overall it is marred by flaws. For
example, the charging sound effect lingers even after the charge
ends, and smashed non-flammable bottles aren't always heard.
On multiple occasions, the camera got into an angle that
caused background and environmental graphics to disappear,
and once the models for some of the monsters became messed up,
causing great big spikes to protrude completely through them.
Some of the effects are pretty, tho

4. Characters and interaction. No real complaints with the
voice acting, except that Ripto sounds like Brak's dad from the
Brak Show and Spyro's actor mispronounces a dragonfly's name.
Spyro seems to be extra-dumb (maybe he's drugged--this
would explain the slowness), beyond that which is necessary
to let the other characters explain gameplay to new
players. (And Sparx's lines don't help--he's just plain
abusive).

So, to summarize, don't bother with this game.

Get Year of the Dragon instead. This is not a worthy
successor to the PSX games.

Lots of potential, but poorly executed

I loved the previous Spyro games, and was thrilled to see Universal take up the series - but very dissapointed with the result. The game is VERY buggy, including sound glitches, freezing, and visual glitches (like Spyro's head getting stuck twisted backwards over his spine - amusing, but not great gameplay!), as well as VERY long load-times, and LOTS of lag in the middle of gameplay. Spyro even moves oddly, and the animation for some of his special moves - like the 'hover' move to achieve a last bit of height at the end of the glide - are downright ridiculous in appearance. For the price, I'm afraid it's just not worth it, and I feel that I was all but ripped off. The background graphics ARE beautiful, though, and the game concept obviously held a lot of potential. If you love Spyro, be sure to RENT this one - and wait for a sequel.
