Tekken Series- The Second Best Fighting Series in the World

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 1 / 3
Date: October 25, 2003

I have ben waiting for so long for Tekken 4 to come out, and I am not disappointed. Tekken 4 is THE best since Soul Calibur 2. It was a blowout sale, and it was rated the Best Fighting Game of 2002. That proves it is better than Virtua Fighter 4, AND Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution.
The game has unbleievable graphics, which is better than the graphics of both Virtua Fighter 4s, the gameplay is superfast, meaning if you fall on the ground you can instantly get back up, rather then having to wait like in the Virtua Fighters. I am now waiting patiently for Tekken 5 to come out because Tekken 4 was just too good.

Somehow they improved on a great thing

Namco has truly outdone themselves with Tekken 4. For my money, while there's plenty of excellent three-dimensional fighting games on the market (ditto for 2-D fighters), the Tekken series has always been one step ahead, integrating the combination tactics used in the best classic fighting games with the beautifully detailed characters and backgrounds that are a staple of this genre. And Tekken 4 is no exception.

The game introduces three new characters: British boxer Steve Fox (only fights with fists, but far more versatile than a character like Balrog from the Street Fighter series), pro wrestler Craig Marduk (good competitor to use if you like King's style), and Brazilian capoeira fighter Christie Monteiro (with a style highly reminiscent of Eddy Gordo from Tekken 3). Everything has been taken to the next level with this game - each fighter has several new techniques that were introduced in this game and they seem to be striking a fairer balance with all of the characters this time around; here, the fighters that are easier to use are not quite as powerful, and hence, not as dominant as they were previously. The details of the game are meticulous (Kuma's companion, Panda, actually carries a pink pocketbook while fighting), and there are several hidden character that you may recognize from earlier games in the series - a new one is Combot, who is this game's equivalent of Mokujin, with the ability to emulate any fighter in the game. A favorite feature of mine is Tekken Force, a side scrolling action game that really takes your character's abilities to the limit, testing your ability to withstand the assault of a slew of other fighters (it's challenging - I still haven't defeated it yet).

In summary: If you like other games in the Tekken series or are a fan of fighting games in general, you will not be disappointed with Tekken 4.

Tekken IV: Review

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 1 / 3

Despite what people say about ths video game, Tekken IV is probably one of the better fighting games out there. It sticks realism and actual fighting technquies without falling into the all out and full-blown fantasy like other fighters such as Soul Calibur(?) and Mortal Kombat do (Which isn't a bad thing but sometimes its best just to stick to reality). Since I've never played the previous three Tekken Games and I have only read backgrounds and summaries for them I can only give you a review on what I know so far.

The Graphics in this game is some of the best I've seen, I was blown away the first couple of times when playing this game. The CGI-3D graphics had a glossy look to them and I was almost convinced that it looked totally life-like, but flaws in the graphics kept me from that edge. Its a lot better than what Namco usually has in this particular department. The body models for the characters range from different sizes (naturally), and the faical features for each is mind-boggling. The stages in this video game aren't specatular, far from it, but they have a realistic feel to it, espically the enviroments with water.

My favorite Stage is the Arena; the roar of the crowd and the rock music playing the background really gets me going. There are several fighting modes: Practice, Arcade, Survival, Vs and Time attack, Story-mode, Training and as you know and two unlockable ones in which you unlock by playing the Steve-Fox story-mode and the all-new Tekken Force mode.

The story modes for most of the characters are full of details and are intruiging with their own CGI cut scenes. However, by the worst story-mode (SPOILER) has to be Lei Wulong's; the plot wasn't bad but afterwards you get nothing but Lei saying "Freeze!" or grunting when he's chasing after Nina Williams: Stupido. But all in all this game is pretty solid the fighting is smooth and never feels clunky and the animations for the characters are great as well. One last note, the voice acting for the characters is Okay at best. A majorty of the voice telents (mainly for, Xiao, Jin, Kazuya, his father, Julia, Nina Williams, and Yoshimitsu) do a great job for their characters, but then there are some voice talents that really don't fit the character and really have no talent when it comes to this profession. The voice actors for Marshal Law and Howrang(?) are laugable and not believable. The music has been said to be horrible, I think it goes quite will with the game and its stages, although it does have its annoying points but its far from horrible. Lastly, Tekken IV is a solid game worth buying and worth adding to your Tekken or fighting collection. --- [a 5 out of 5]

I'm not saying I own the game or anything, but I have played the arcade version and it is AWESOME! The graphics, the moves, the new characters are amazing! It has a newer game engine compared to the other Tekkens and there is no infinite stage(meaning that you can smash someone into a wall, a tree stump, or a person in the fight club stage!) Also, there are a lot of other cool stages like the forest stage, and the water effects are amazing also, similar to the ones in Virtua Fighters 3 and 4.

Best of all, there are new characters including Chris Marduk, Steve Fox, the combot(much like Mokujin), an Eddy-like fighter named Christy, and a guy named Violet(which bears a striking resemblance and very similar story to Lee Chaolin's, who also returns in this episode).

Also, Kazuya and Marshal Law rejoin the cast and Jin has a whole new fighting style. Heihachi returns, too with another of his plans with the Devil gene(i'm surprised he can still fight, I think he's like 70-something in this game). Like I said, the graphics are amazing, and not just on the environment, either. The characters look almost real, and they have whole new costumes(kudos on the new Yoshimitsu ones) which also look amazing.

Like I said, I don't own it, but I'm sure the PS2 version will be jam packed with features, and a lot of other stuff(I hope they put another minigame in it like the Tekken Ball mode Or Tekken Bowl.)

This game is a must have, so get it when it comes out!

There are only 2.5 responses you can get from this game:

1) you love it, because you've been a Tekken Fan for years and this is just a Definite.

1.5) you've played some tekken games and are in the process of getting addicted -> Newbie.

2) you can't stand this game, mostly because there are waaay too many moves/combinations to learn.

So, if you're #1 or 1.5 OR are into fighting games and just haven't gotten into the tekken series, this is a MUST. The graphics are awesome and there is abosolutely no better fighting game than the Tekkens. Some other games may have better graphics or cinematics, but they lack so much in gameplay. There's just no limit to how in depth you can get into Tekken.(chickens, chain throws, tech rolls, how 2 seconds of vulnerability after committing to a move can get you killed instantly) Try it out, a ton of gamers would probably pay even more than [money] for it.

Waiting for Tekken 4 Tag Team

This game is not a very good value. After being able to play with 2 characters in TTT, Tekken 4 feels like a step back from TTT. I predict Namco will release another version of Tekken 4 (like TTT was to Tekken 3).

Virtua Fighter still King

Tekken 4 is a decent sequel in the series but it still doesn't live up to the amazing Virtua Figher legacy. Virtua Fighter 4 is faster, has more moves and combos and takes far more skill to become decent at. Tekken's fighting system is far to newbie. Especially the fact that you can still get you opponent in a lock, i.e. perform the same move over and over so that you opponent can't do anything to get out of it and must sit there and lose very cheaply, in VF this is not possible to do. I must say that I'm very dissapointed with Namco for releasing such a sub par fighter after Yu Suzuki and Sega gave us such a masterpiece with VF4
