Not to me

I had some major problems with it. I love the X-Files and I had huge expectations for this game. I was also excited that you could finish the game with both Mulder and Scully probably adding to the game's replay value. The story also appeared to be loyal to the show. I add an extra star only for the game's desire to be entertaining at most.

The worst problem was the cheap graphics. You only have to compare it to any Silent Hill games to know how bad the graphics of X-Files were. Most of the times, I tolerate poor graphics if the game is intriguing enough, but that never happened. Frankly, I couldn't believe the zombie on wheels. I can't believe that was the best they could come up with after a long list of bizarre monsters filed up after so many X-Files seasons. This wasn't the X-Files. This was just another videogame.

But I had to pass the first stage at least. Couldn't give up so easily. What I saw terrified me. I had never witnessed a Playstation game with Nintendo graphics.

meh.. unless you're a hardcore adventure fan...

well, this game started off looking really cool, i mean the graphics are great and YOU'RE MULDER running around with a flashlight and pistol, what could be cooler?

sadly, the gameplay is very much what you'd expect from a subpar game.. running around, it LOOKS kind of like indigo prophecy which is very good, but without any of the good parts of that game.. you run around and when you walk next to something that requires an action, an "X" appears on the screen. so it's just a matter of finding X's! takes all thought out of it. when you run around, the camera changes, so let's say you run down.. the screen changes and suddenly you're supposed to be moving the controller UP! this happens over and over and is really annoying. again, it LOOKS great. it just isn't fun to PLAY. to compound that problem, you have to run around areas that look similar, so it's very disorienting and confusing, running up.. oh wait, am i running down or up? where am i?!

you have a notebook with notes from scully.. unfortunately the notes are HANDWRITTEN! making them really hard to read, at least on my TV. and besides, who wants to READ during a PS2 game?

on to shooting.. shooting is "meh." it could definitely be worse, but could definitely be better. it's just not very good. i gave up on this game pretty fast.. an x-files game is a cool idea, but didn't like this one.

Beware of any new video game that is discounted from the typical $49.99 pricing. This game had so much potential, but the poor camera angles, the slow game play and the ripoff of Resident Evil makes this game a huge disappointment for this avid gamer and X-File fan and the only reason I gave this game two stars is because of the voice talents of Gillian and David.

Bad Execution

I would divide video games into 4 groups:

Group I: The big stuff is right and the small stuff is right. These are the truly great games, like GTA 3 and Halo.

Group II: The big stuff is wrong and the little stuff is right. These are fun, if ultimately unfullfilling games. I would put Bully in this category. The concept wasn't great, but they did well with it to make a fun game.

Group III: Bad big picture and bad details. I've never actually played a game like this, but I assume that they exist.

Group IV: The big picture is good, but the details are lacking. This is what this game is, and it is the type of game that annoys me to no end. Think Fable or pretty much every title put out by EA Sports. That it COULD be a very good game is clear in playing, but that the makers simply didn't put enough effort into the details of the game to make it great. Since, in the end, it disappoints so frequently it isn't even good.

So, let me talk a bit about what is wrong with the game.

First, it isn't really in a genre. Rather, it flirts with elements of different genres (Action, puzzle, etc), but not enough of any to provide interesting gameplay.

Second, they tried to have more deatil for the main characters than they could pull off. The result was a very zombie-like, Mulder and Scully...

Third, the camera angles were handled horribly. It is one thing to have a pure 2rd-person perspective. However, the changes in camera location (and often having them flip 180 degress!) was terrible. You would be running and the camera would cut and throw off your direction. This is especially difficult during action scenes such as the fight with the sherriff...

I could go on, but I won't. This game is acceptable for an X-Files fan, but under no circumstances should anyone else buy it. Even X-Files fans will be more disappointed than pleased...

Survival Horror, Basic

This game is just another basic survival horror game like Resident Evil or Silent Hill. If it wasn't the fact it was The X-Files, this game could have gone down the drain. But seeing the old characters of the series and how it ties in with the storylines makes it very exciting for the fans. The scenarios and puzzles of the game really relate to the series and that makes it a more fun game to play. You actually get the feel that you are watching an episode of the X-Files and a part of it as well.
With these facts involved, I would have given a better review; however, I found the camera angles and controls very annoying. It's the type of game where if you push upward, the character moves in that direction according to the current camera angle rather than the concept where you push upward and your character is always moving in a forward direction. I hate this especially when you are running from 'boss' monsters and at a certain aspect point the camera view switches two to three times. This causes your character's movement to go haywire, running in all different directions while the monsters are eating you alive.
Maybe some may not agree, but I think the character movement should have been assigned in one way where UP is forward, LEFT moves left, and so on. The constant shifting of the camera angles makes it difficult to control. Of course, after a while you get a hang of it, but the fact this conditioning has to take place made it difficult to enjoy the first few hours of the game.
Luckily, you get to play two different versions of the game in a sense (you get to choose to play as Scully or Mulder), which is a big plus. The storyline may be the same, but you still get to see it in another person's view, based on the "character's character" in the show.

Should have been better...

As a fan of the show, I will probably be a bit more kind to this game than it actually deserves. The storyline is decent and there are many direct references to the show. You certainly can't complain about the voice talent as the original characters were on board for this game, not only Mulder and Scully but also the Lone Gunmen, Skinner, Krychek, CSM, Marita, and even Kersh. There are quite a few nods to the show itself, everything from the black oil that posed a threat throughout the series to posters in the video store (which is also named after an episode), to street names. A nice touch that will be recognized by fans. Mulder and Scully have separate but intersecting storylines so you get to play two games for the price of one. Both are immersing and character-related. The story is surprisingly addictive and once you get caught up, you'll put it down for probably only one reason, which leads me to...

The bad points of the game are extremely hard to overlook. This feels like a very early (like original playstation early) Resident Evil. The characters, while having a likeness to the actor seem clunky and clumsy. Somewhere along the line, Mulder became cross-eyed and Scully apparently had breast implants. The controls of the game are HORRENDOUS. I don't care how much you play it, you never really get used to it and will probably spend a good bit of time running around in circles while something attacks you. The camera angles are an issue throughout and the "X" icon, which cues the discovery of items is so sensitive that if you aren't in the exact right spot, you'll miss it completely. The auto-aiming feature of the game is beyond annoying and half the time you completely miss the target even though it is literally right in front of you. The puzzle solving aspect of the game could be quite irritating I suppose, search for a door, search for a key, go back to the beginning of the level to find the door again, combine three or four items in your inventory to create something that you can actually use, etc. but I am willing to overlook that as it is typical of these types of games. What I can't overlook is the HUGE number of glitches in the game. The FMV don't play half the time and some of the cut scenes actually start skipping or the screen just turns black. Even if you do see it, it's likely that you won't have any volume. Nothing like watching Scully spout off for five minutes without being able to hear a word. Hope it wasn't anything important...oh she's gone now, guess they decided to split up. I never did get to see the very last part of the game because of this. Can't blame it on the disc copy either because I tried a couple of them and on different consoles.

Ok, so bottom line, the storyline is good and ties in well to the show. Fans of the show are treated to many references that would be missed by non-fans. The music and voice talent are excellent and the game does effectively capture the mood of the show. The two separate but intertwined storylines of Mulder and Scully make it the equivalent of two short games in one and both are good. The controls however are hideous and quite frankly unforgivable with the calibre of design available for video games. Why you are not able to run when you have both the gun and flashlight equipped is beyond me and I'm not even bringing up the camera angles again. The FMV cut scenes are glitchy and won't play half the time. The same is true of the bonus features that you unlock. The extras are actually quite disappointing. B-Rolls (of everyone in the show except Mulder and Scully), teasers, art work and story boards. Overall, the game should have been quite good but the mechanics are so bad that they are difficult to overlook and frankly drag this game down into the clearance bin. If you are a die-hard fan, then you'll probably still want it. Otherwise, get something that won't make you want to fling the controller across the room.

I am really looking foward to this game. It looks like the Sierra is working really hard on making this game a success. Look at the things going for it; The game is based on a 3 episode script penned by a writer who worked on the series, It takes place during season 7 (how convienent since the DVD's are coming out in May), David and Gillian and the rest of the cast have voiced the game, You finally get to play as either Mulder or Scully, and you finally get your hands dirty and perform autopsies! HOW COOL IS THAT!
I enjoyed playing the first X-Files game on the PS one system, but once I was done with it there was no desire to play it again. It had no replay value. The developers are saying that this game will have 15-19 hours of playing time. With the ablility to play as either Mulder or Scully there will be more replay value.
I think this game will be a must have for fans and it will appeal to gamers who enjoy survival Horror games like Resident Evil and Silent Hill. So for those X-Philers who don't have a PS2 or XBox, you should either consider getting one or make plans to confiscate your friends game systems because "The Truth" will be out there this summer!

I have played this game!

This game is a mix of Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and Extermination.

Examples:
Controls are just like Silent Hill 2.
Cammera shots are like Resident Evil (viewpoints are fixed)
Inventory System is like Resident Evil.
Health display is taken from Extermination. (Infections and damage are shown on the body in the inventory screen with differnt colors)

Notes:
Pick who you want to play (each has different storyline)
Mulder's game is more action packed than Scully's.
Scully's game is more problem solving.
Game is divided into 3 Episodes: 2 Acts each

Pros:
Detail is great in every aspect of game.
Controls are real easy to learn.
Has DVD-like special features unlocked as you progress
No limit to inventory as you go through each act

Cons:
No Difficult level settings in option menu
Very Dark in certain areas make it hard to see what's going on
No rotating cammera (Resident Evil Similar)

Now if they'd bring back the show it be perfect

Fabulous that they were able to get the stars to agree to do the voices for the Game! This game isn't perfect, but for me it was just what I was looking for in a new game. It had a little Resident Evil(Zombies), Silent Hill (Eerie Surroundings) and then the X-files storyline! After I got used to the controls and what the game was about I was hooked. The main complaint for me was it wasn't longer! If they do a sequel I will have it on preorder as soon as I hear about it.

It has the bit of mystery of the X-files but is basically a combo game with shooting/puzzles and even a few Autopsy's thrown in. They really have a place to go with this game if they choose to.

I know that doesn't answer all your questions about the game, but it's worth trying. If you don't want to buy it check it out at your rental store.

Surprisingly good, a must play for X-Files fans

Though it suffered a number of release delays and with the dreaded fact that it is a licensed video game, The X-Files: Resist or Serve is a surprisingly good game, even though it draws many comparisons to various Resident Evil games because of it's presentation. While it suffers from graphical glitches and a few gameplay and control issues, Resist or Serve still shines thanks to it's mix of survival horror and puzzle elements. Playing as FBI Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully; you investigate a series of bizarre and brutal murders in the town of Red Falls, Colorado. The game's story is written by veteran X-Files show writers, so the game's story plays out much like the lost episode that it is claimed to be. Mulder's story is more action oriented as you take on hordes of zombie-ish creatures, while Scully's story is puzzle oriented as you combine various toxins and perform autopsies. The puzzle elements are a nice diversion than the usual "find the key to open the door" type puzzles that are populated throughout other games of the genre, and that alone is refreshing. The character models of Mulder, Scully, A.D. Skinner, the Lone Gunmen, Alex Krycek, and the Cancer Man are nicely rendered so that each character resembles their series counterpart, but the character movement comes off as wooden. The sound of the game is where Resist or Serve shines as each actor reprises their role (thats right, David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are on board as Mulder and Scully) and the music recycles various episode scores and sounds brilliant. All in all, The X-Files: Resist or Serve is a surprisingly good game that any and every X-Files fan should check out.
