Why Should YOU Buy This Game?

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 2 / 3
Date: January 26, 2002
Author: Amazon User

Quick List of Reasons to Buy this Game:

1. Graphics: The graphics are better than any other NFL video game.
2. Training Mode: John Madden teaches you the plays! How great is that?
3. Create-a-Team: With over 50 logos, you can create any team with nearly any name you want. You say you don't live in an NFL city? Not to worry. In Madden 2002, your city can be a contender for the Super Bowl! That's awesome.
4. Commentary: There isn't anything better than hearing Pat Summerall and John Madden calling a game YOU are playing.
5. Cheerleader Cards: Tasteful Madden cards meant to whip up the crowd. BUT, you have to earn them. (Darn.)

OVERALL: No other NFL-based football game is as good as Madden 2002.

MADDEN 2002....

Maybe I expected too much, but this game could have been so much better. I have heard about the improved pass coverage and more realistic defense...but I don't see it. I have made plenty of one handed catches and zipped passes into places that just shouldn't cut it! I even cranked up, the game level and A.I. level, still with 3 games left in the season I have over 2,100 grounds yards with Eddie George and over 3,300 passing yards, 39 TD's with steve McNair. While I don't expect real life stats, I expected a little more realism. But over all, I gave this game 4 stars because of the graphics and gameplay in general. I think there are still lots of knicks to be worked out, but overall this is a great sports game!!

well, more like 4.5 stars

this is a clear improvement over Madden 2k1... just the much, much better (less annoying) banter in the commentary is worth playing. everything else is all a bit better than Madden 2k1 but there are some areas i thought were well executed aside from having more lines than 'it had too much POP!'

there is a nice quick little tutorial to get you started. 2k2 now allows you to completely create AND play a team in franchise mode (you will need to replace one of the existing teams, though). there are situational games you can play to earn Madden cards (scoring the most TD's in 2 mins, for example) which is fun if you want to just spend a few minutes sharpening up your skills. everything looks nicer and better animated.

i want to defend the difficulty a bit... it does get hard in the passing game if you go beyond the easy play modes but i think the AI just tightens down their secondaries unless you have enough run plays (or short passes). however, i've got big, quick, good receivers (like Moss) who doesn't seem to break away as often as i would imagine against slower and lower rated defenders (even subing positions to create mismatches). HOWEVER, even though my OL is rated 82, my running back (rated an ok 78 with a break tackle of 87 and 83 speed) gets stuff a lot even against weaker opponents.

the AI also seemed to have these drives that other reviewers mentioned where nothing could stop them (i've got upper 90's ratings in my corners and 80's in my DL and Safeties)... and i'm talking about a few drives when i tried to defend against the TEXANS!! as noted, the AI never gets kicking penalties. stopping the AI passing game is really hard.

finally in franchise mode, i really wish they would allow you to trade multi-year picks instead of just the coming year's pick. i also wish they would start downgrading the asking price for free agents as the year progresses without anyone picking them up. and PLEASE, can we speed up some of the animations (like the kick off).

all in all, this is a very good game and is recommend highly.

Classic!!

I had to wait a month to get this game. I'm stationed in Germany and our P/X(post exchange) still hasn't got it(that was two and a half months ago).I went on leave to the states in Sept, and the night I got home my wife and I went to GOOD 'OL Wall-Mart to get it, plus I got NCAA 2002(GREAT GAME ALSO). This years version is harder, the AI is almost perfect competition. 2001 even on the pro mode I started to make it to the Super Bowl every year, and kinda got bored. Anyway, my expansion team is 1-9, and my Seahawks are 4-6, but I'm kinda happy because it just seems right. Get this game it's the best football game ever!!

I hate almost all football video games except for this 1!

This game is AWESOME! YOU can challenge calls. The graphics are so good that you see the ligh reflecting off peoples helmets and you can see the rain splashing up when it hits the ground! I'm obsessed with this game. At three o'clock I wake up and play until seven thirty and then I take a shower, eat breakfast, and run to school. After school, I can play interupted for seven hours because I don't have any friends and I'm a loser. This is not only a game for the common losers of America, but the jocks will love it too. All the kids in my grade collect digimon and pokemon. They're a bunch of jokers. This game prevents me from doing my work so I have a fourty four in English, 11 in science, 23 in math, and a 69 in gym. Overall, if you are a loser like me, get this game, play it twenty four seven, and don't by digimon. (Pokemon is 10x better.) Salutations.

Madden 2002, The Best so far!

After a full year of Madden 2002, I am convinced this is the best football game out there. The series of Madden games seems to get better and better every year as I own the entire series.
I began playing Madden 2002 at home in exhibition mode, season mode, and even franchise mode. The computer does tend to get a little easy when you get your team rolling, even in All-Madden difficulty. After a few months, Madden 2002 went somewhere into my entertainment system and began to collect dust with the rest of my used games.
The re-birth of my Madden 2002. I am stationed on a US Navy warship and a few months ago my ship departed on a 6 month deployment. One of the few things I grabbed for deployment happened to be Madden 2002. This game is awesome. Using the Custom League, me and the guys are able to have a great season only playing eachother with no computer involved. We usually get around 6-10 people and kick off a season on our off time and go at it using created players and fantasy drafts. The compitition is awesome! I never relized just how bad of a player I was until I started playing people from all over the US on my ship.
Why this game is the best:
Gameplay: Awesome... D-backs knocking the ball away, RB's juking, WR's diving for catches, Kickers kicking the game winning field goal into the wind for the win.
Graphics: Looks like the real thing. Some tackles look a little stupid, like the guy is breaking his back.
This game is alot of fun, I recommend creating players and playing as many different people as humanly possible to get the most out of this game. This game is FOOTBALL at its best!

Good Game, But Not Too Many Improvements

Let's face it, Madden 2001 set the standard for PlayStation 2 football games. No other football game for the PS2 even came close to the gameplay or graphics.

This year's version of the game gives you some nice enhancments over Madden 2001, but not as much as I would have expected. The Ask the Coach feature for offensive play selection has changed so that Madden gives you advice. But, the advice phrases are the same as last year's in most cases, the difference being Madden is giving the advice.

Another disappointment in this year's version was the lack of focus on the addition of new commentary by John Madden and Pat Summerall. If you played last year's version long enough, you'll quickly start to hear some of the same commentary again.

Another thing they took away from the game, which I thought was great, is the comments made by players when scoring a touchdown or making a key play. ("All I do is score touchdowns!")

The gameplay has improved. Kicking field goals and punts is now more difficult because of a new accuracy and power meter, and the computer's artificial intelligence is definitely increased from last year.

In addition, the new franchise mode and updated roster alone make the game worth buying. You'll also enjoy a number of other features such as the ability to challenge a play and a new training mode where John Madden teaches you the X's and O's of football.

Better than PS1

I played this game on Playstaion and i was disappointed with the fact that the Left-footed kickers such as Joe Nedney from the titans was Right-footed. That has bugged me for the longest time. If you want to make a realistic game, make the players realistic liek having Left-Footed kickers. Well, I played this game on PS2 and I was blown away. The different camera angles, The auto-zoom, the players names are readable on their backs. This game just is amazing.

I started playing Madden way back in the Sega Genesis days. Since then I have upgraded to PS1 and now PS2. Every year I am impressed with the progress of this game. I always have a hard time letting go of the last year's but it quickly I'm always impressed by the new version.

Best Game Ever For PS2
