Same Game.... Different Day

2 Rating: 2, Useful: 0 / 0

December 7th, 1941 is a day that will live in infamy to be sure. The day Medal of Honor: Rising Sun was released will not. Unfortunatly, this is a game that disappointingly falls short in too many areas to overlook.

MOH:RS starts off at the attack at Pearl Harbor where you as a soldier of the US Marines are stationed. Here is where the game's first problem exists. While the beginning of the attack plays very well, the rest falls flat to pointless shooting at planes while on a boat that rides on a rail. In the beginning of the mission you wake up in your bed and run through the damaged ship to the deck where you see Japanese zeros flying overhead. You are handed a weapon and you start shooting. It's very dramatic and when you first emerge from the bowels of the ship, the sight you see will drop your jaw at the shear scope of the scene. After firing on the planes however, you now get on a boat and all you do is hold down the trigger for ten minutes and aim at planes as best you can. I don't understand why they would start the sequence so well and then end it so horribly. It's like they got lazy and decided to go the cheap way out. Instead of designing a more engaging level, they stuck us on a boat and dragged us around the bay. It gets very boring and could have been something great. That being said, the rest of the missions are somewhat interesting, but nothing new at all. Nothing inovative and nothing that you haven't seen in the previous MOH games. The only real difference is that the bad guys shout in Japanese instead of german. There's no exploration as your hand is held the whole way through. All paths that you're supposed to go down are already open for you. Mission objectives are bland and usually get from Point A to Point B and kill everyone in between. Sometimes these are disguesed as "rescue the POW's" but all you're really doing is getting from your start point to the POW's. That's it. So, the missions are bland and boring which means that the game is bland and boring. Maybe there's a reason the game is so short. I finsished it in under 8 hours.

Enemy AI is somewhat smart and somewhat stupid at the same time. Some of the Japanese stop, take cover, and try to flank you. But that's a 1 in 30 chance righ there. The game boasts "Devastating Banzai charges" and that seems to be all the enemy does. Instead of firing at you like they should, they just charge at you and get shot head on. No wonder they lost the war.

The game does contain multiplayer and co-op options. Up to 4 players can play in split screen mode. The levels are nothing special and it's no Halo, but it can offer some entertainment if you have some friends with you. Co-op is basically the same missions with a partner. YOu do the same exact things. Some things change, like you have to have both people present to open a door or put out a fire. Or one player will have to go around to another side to open a door for the other player. Nice idea, but the missions are still just as pointless.

MOH:RS contains over 20 authentic World War II weapons. It's got a nice variation in that respect. No slouch in the fire power area which is good and offers at least some variety throughout the missions. The welrod is especially interesting as it's a one shot silence pistol. Very interesting for stealth.

The graphics in this game...suck quite frankly. There's no other way around it. FLAT is the operative word throughout the entire game. Water looks like flat blue gook on the ground. Everything is pixelated and flat. The foliage looks stupid and if you look at them closely you can see that they aren't even modeled that well at all and if you turn the right way you can see that they're flat. There's clipping and collision detection issues as well as Pop-up. Every character in the game moves as if they were a robot and their limbs were detached from the rest of their body. I'd expect this on a bad Playstation One game. Not a next-generation console. Poorly done and pathetic in more ways than one.

Not one to leave on a bad note, here's the good part of the game. The sound is excellent. THX certified and surround sound enabled. The sound effects are incredible. Bullets whiz by your head and the sound of tracers zipping through the air fill the speakers. The music, while not as good as Medal of Honor: Frontline, is still good and features some Japanese themes.

And thats it. It isn't a game you should avoid. It gives you a semi-fun romp through the pacific theater of the war. While repetative and pointless mission objectives hold the game back, fans of the series might enjoy it. A rental at best.

Im sorry for saying this but this game is not worth a second look.me and my father love the MOH series, but we beat it in 3 hours. It is very unchallenging and a waist of money. Now that you can buy this game for 5 dollars i think its worth it. if your spending anything over 15 dollars dont consider buying this game. A complete putdown to moh lover.

the graphics are no good and its bugged. it takes 5 sniper rounds to kill 1 enemy, rediculous. also u can shoot the enemy in the head and he will flinch, :P

i know cause Im acually done beating it.

i dont recommend this game to any1.

I think this game is better than moh front line.the levels are really cool.i especially like co-op mode.it makes the game much funner playing with a friend along side of you killing japs.every level is relly fun to play.my favorite ones are the second and third ones.the weapons are pretty cool looking.the sound of the Thompson is very realistic.the only flaw in the game is the level Midnight Raid.its so dark its hard telling where your going.the level Pearl Harbor is awsome.its very authentic the way you have to navigate through the lower deck of the damaged ship and how you have to gun down the Jap planes while your comrades are being torn apart by the japs machine guns because your guys are shooting at the planes with a BAR or M1.over all i think this is a great game.others who say Front Line is better, need to get a life. I Highly Recomend Buying Rising Sun!

Rising Sun had so much potential, but its many weaknesses overshadow what could have been a much more enjoyable experience.

I was extremely excited a couple of years ago when I heard that the Medal of Honor series was going to make a WWII game themed in the Pacific. Due to the fact that the European theatre was being worn out, it was a great idea for EA to have a shift of location. The problem with Rising Sun is that a WWII game in the Pacific offers such a variety for a video game, so you would imagine EA would take advantage of it and create an amazing new take on WWII combat. But boy was I wrong.

First off, the core gameplay in Rising Sun is an extremely simple concept with a very linear design. With games turning towards a more open-ended gaming experience in which the player chooses where he or she wants to go, Rising Sun's linear one path gameplay does not appeal to most. The core concept is to run through levels and kill anything that moves. You will sometimes have squadmates along with you for the journey, but it is basically a one man show in which the game basically makes it seem like you are winning WWII single-handedly. The only thing that saves the game is just the pure-fun that the Medal of Honor series is always known to offer. Quoting the Gamespot review: "The weaknesses of Rising Sun's gameplay undermine what could have been a much more enjoyable experience."

Graphics aren't bad. Weapon models look nice and closely resemble their real-life counterparts. Character models look pretty good for the most part, but animations can look awful at times. Landscapes are definitely hit and miss, with some look nicely detailed and other looking like they were only half finished. The cut-scenes actually look very nice, with lots of detail put into them. Overall, the graphics at least get the job done.

Medal of Honor games are always known to have great sound effects, and Rising Sun is no exception. All the weapons sound great and help add some realism to the game. Explosions and grenades are nicely done and sound pretty good for the most part. Voice-overs are well done and help add life to the characters. The music is the highlight, though. With its cinematic presentation, the background music is excellent and perfect for the era. Rising Sun will not disappoint in the sound department.

The game does not have a whole lot of features except for the single player game and multiplayer. It does offer a few unlockables when you beat the single-player campaign. But the campaign is extremely short, only 8 missions to offer, and it should take you anywhere from only 7 to 8 hours to complete. It doesn't offer a lot of replay value due to the linear design and with the enemies only in set locations. While it may be worth the $15 price tag on it, it is probably better suited as a rental.

Even despite it's problems, the game does offer a somewhat high tilt level. The story running through it isn't anything special and doesn't add a whole lot of excitement to the game, but Rising Sun will at least keep you interested from start to finish.

While Rising Sun is far from great, I wouldn't consider it a bad game either. Even despite it's linear design and short length, Rising Sun does offer a somewhat cinematic presentation of WWII combat in the Pacific theatre. I would still recommend giving the game a chance. But the sad thing about Rising Sun is how much potential the game actually had. Like the Gamespot review said, with a few more months of development to help polish up the numerous technical problems, Rising Sun could have offered a much more enjoyable WWII experience.

This game is the best war game I have ever played. There are a lot of different weapons you can use. They have two player story mode. They also have multi player where up to 4 people can play. Get this awesome game. The people giving this game a 4 or below are retards.

This is bad

Wow how unrealistic was that. No soldier ever fights alone, it is so stupid. And it was so short, I beat it in one day! Don't buy it, it is crap!

A let down after MOH Frontline

I'm not a big FPS games fan, but I got hooked on to MOH Frontline which I thoroughly enjoyed. So I bought MOH Rising Sun expecting it to be even better...what a let down it was! The game was way too easy and when it abruptly came to an end, I was very disappointed. The storyline and missions are not bad, but the level of difficulty and the dumb soldiers are ridiculous. The graphics are mediocre. In the single-player missions your comrades sometimes get in between you and the enemy, and your enemy can still shoot at you but you can't! I think two pluses for this game - it now costs only 15 bucks or so, and the game has save points all along the various missions (a big improvement over Frontline).
