Suikoden, RPG of a thousand characters

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 4 / 6

All I can say is wow. 108 characters, with over a half being playable. You will spend about half of the game collecting all of the characters, if you wish. I recommend it, as the most fun I had was searching through dungeons that I had ended long ago, and running errands for random people, just so they can do your laundry(even though it has no use.)

The graphics are less than stellar. But, I found the old school, cheezy drawings a welcome break from all of the high tech [junk] you see today. If that is what you need, you'd best stay clear.

The game begins as you are an errand boy of the Empire, but once you see it's corruption you flee, betraying your father. You join the Liberation Army, and eventually gain control of it, and seek to destroy Emperor Barbarosa and the evil Sorceress Windy. Along the way you experience, friendship, betrayal, family discord, and murder.

I reccommend this game to people who enjoy side quests immensly(like me), those who can't get enough old school, or just those who want a RPG experience that is far from normal.

The Konami we all know is back. Remember all the good quality games we used to get from this company? Well, Konami is trying to get back into shape, and Suikoden, the year's best RPG, is a step in the right direction. The story is simple. You are the son of the General Teo, one of the emperor's most powerful generals. Immediately, your father leaves to fight a battle up north leaving a few of his trusted friends to watch over of you. Soon after, you come to realize that you and your father been serving on the wrong side. The Emperor and his generals' minds have been brainwashed. The result is unhappy subjects and an enslaved country. Knowing this you join the Liberation Army and when their heroic leader is assassinated by the baddies, you are chosen as leader. Your job now is to recruit thousands of men to join the Liberation Army and restore peace to the country.
Suikoden is full of beautiful backgrounds (especially your castle which you can name), not to mention outstanding effects for magic spells. The music is incredible, rivaling the soundtrack of Square's Final Fantasy 3! Some of the sound effects used in spells are reminiscent of those taken off old He-Man episodes, which oddly enough sounds terrific. All this plus intricate plot twists and an inspiring storyline constantly push this game forward. Suikoden is undeniably one of the best RPGs ever made. Not only that, but Suikoden isn't a game that can be finished in a few days either. Suikoden is long (about 25+ hours) and it doesn't get boring... ever.

first off, the time it came out, this was by far the best RPG ever. The main character (unofficially "Tir" Mcdhol) ends up on the side of a rebellion that leads him against his own father and the emporer. This game was refreshing as there was no "save the world" to it just a good war story. No more no less. My only gripe with this game would be that it doesn't have the improvements to it that later games in the series had, multiple rune slots, jeane's breasts, jeane and viki as playables, jeane wearing too many clothes, etc. The main character in this game however is by far the best main character of the seriese to date. I bought this game when it came out and am surprised to see what it is going for now. Some of the prices are easily above $100. WELL WORTH THE PRICE! Actually, it is a bargain at that price.

Pretty Cool RPG

This game is very average. The graphics are average, the story line is a little above average, and the game play is about average. This game was one of the best RPGs on Playstation when it came out about 4 or 5 years ago, but with games like Final Fantasy and Xenogears this game seems not as great as it once was. The cool thing about this game is the sheer amount of characters, which number more than 100, which is cool because it gives you many options. If you need a new RPG to play and already have played some of the better ones, you should probably give Suikodan a shot.

I have owned this game for about 2 years now, and still play it. This is a must-play game, with an unforgetable storyline and over 60 playable characters. Guaranteed at least 50 hours of gameplay. If you haven't already, order it, or pick it up where possible.

A game that stays with you far after you've beaten it.

Now, I've played games since the beginning of time, meaning I've started with Norg on the commodore 64, I've played RPGs for bout 13 years now. And I've only come across one game with a more captivating plot than this game which is Xenogears. This game almost changed my life but we won't get into that heh heh, the battle system allowed me to play without loathing the next battle coming. the grapgics are still in 16-bit style. So if you're obsessed with graphics and don't care how fun a game is(beleive it or not there's alot of people out there like that, they don't care how fun a game is as long as it looks good.) But if you only care bout graphics than you shouldn't touch this game with a ten foot pole. I gave this game 4 stars because of the poor graphics, if it wasn't for them then I'd go all out. (My brother refused to play Wild Arms because it didn't have as good as graphics as Final Fantasy 7, what a moron) To add to this game is more than your average battle system but also they have all out war zone battles where you're juggling 30,000 lives to kill with, it's fun. ~Seth~

This game has every thing an RPG should, and then some! Even though its graphics are a little old, it still rules. Besides what matters is the story, right. And what a story it is. Collecting all 108 Members for your army adds huge amounts to the replay value, since you're sure to miss two or three the first time around.

I hate to let everyone know just how old I am. let's just say I once owned a "new" Coleco-vision system. (now that was state of the art technology). Anyhow...being an older gameplayer, and having played everything from Final Fantasy (no number behind it..I'm talking the original) to FF VIII (give or take an I), I can appreciate the "old school" RPG play of Suikoden. Like it's been said a few times in other reviews, don't expect the FF cinematics or breath taking graphics. but do expect a real fun game that will draw you in and eat away those hours before you know it. I bought this game along with 2 other RPGs and Suikoden ended up in my system almost permanently. My wife watched for awhile before she got involved in the game. (she tries to weasel her way in and play time to time.) My favorite part is the meeting and recruiting of the 108 people you meet throughout the game. Your little hole-in-the-wall castle at the beginning slowly builds into a huge fortress in no time. (one hint: recruit EVERYONE you meet, even gardeners and chefs and others who wouldn't be very useful in a battle.). The storyline is very good and will keep you saying: "well maybe just one more hour of playing..then bed!" I have Suikoden II on my wish list now.

Suikoden is...

Wonderful! I love this game. I play it several times. Even after beating it, I find myself playing this game over and over.

Spoilers for people who havent played the game:

In the beginning your waiting to talk to the Emperor with your father. After all that you talk to another guy to get a job from. And then you go home. You get five people the next morning in your party. You do your job, and then you get sent to do another one. Not bad.

You end up being a rebel. (the only way the story will move on! ) You get a castle, have people join your entercourage and such. You go through a series of battles to gain more territory. Taking down one part of the Empire at a time!

Some people will think that this game [is bad]. Honestly. I love the story behind it. But I know the graphics [are bad] compared to what we have to day, like FFX.

But this is one of the great RPGs out there. Play it once! Try it out. You'll love it if your into RPGs!
