Strong story carries this title to 4 stars.

If you don't like old-school then this probably is not the game for you. The graphics in this game are not awful, I mind you, but they are certainly not what makes this title so great. So if your looking for hi-tech FMV that will make you drool, then stop reading this review and check out one of the newer titles. Now for you true RPG fans who stuck around after that warning, I commend you. This is a story based game. The story is powerful and it hits hard. Basically you lead an rebel army against the evil king. Now I know what your thinkin' "that's been done, how does that cliche story become powerful?". I understand but you've gotta trust me, this story is no cliche. Your gonna remember it when you finish, I guarantee it. Also featured in this game is an unique recruiting feature. As you progress in the game the need to build your army becomes greater, therefore you meet people along the way and are opted to recruit them. As they are recruited, they all add to your castle. It ain't easy though because they all want something. I still haven't gotten everybody. The only problem with this game is its length. Even an unexperianced RPer (who stuck around after the warning) should finish it in under 30 hours. That is of course, if you decide not to recruit everybody (which is an entirely optional quest). If you don't mind a game that looks like your playing Super Nintendo, but are lookin for a great story, then my friend, your game library is not complete without Suikoden.

Like great stories?

This game is the best. Have you ever sat down to read a really good book? You can't tear yourself away? That is exactly what this is like! It doesn't matter that the game has super nintendo graphics. SOme of the best RPGS ever were on super nintendo. This RPG has one of the best story lines. After playing this game you will see what I mean. Then, when you finish the game and want more, try playing the second!

A game that stays with you far after you've beaten it.

Now, I've played games since the beginning of time, meaning I've started with Norg on the commodore 64, I've played RPGs for bout 13 years now. And I've only come across one game with a more captivating plot than this game which is Xenogears. This game almost changed my life but we won't get into that heh heh, the battle system allowed me to play without loathing the next battle coming. the grapgics are still in 16-bit style. So if you're obsessed with graphics and don't care how fun a game is(beleive it or not there's alot of people out there like that, they don't care how fun a game is as long as it looks good.) But if you only care bout graphics than you shouldn't touch this game with a ten foot pole. I gave this game 4 stars because of the poor graphics, if it wasn't for them then I'd go all out. (My brother refused to play Wild Arms because it didn't have as good as graphics as Final Fantasy 7, what a moron) To add to this game is more than your average battle system but also they have all out war zone battles where you're juggling 30,000 lives to kill with, it's fun. ~Seth~

One of the best RPGs on PlayStation

This game won't overwhelm you with incredible graphics. There are no 3D animations or special effects that you see in many RPGs today. But if you are able to appreciate great RPGs, this game will overwhelm you with powerful storyline, charismatic characters, and touching music. If you can see past the cool graphics and glitz that cover many of the RPGs today, there isn't much content. To borrow an old Asian proverb, "Empty can makes the most noise". That's not the case with Suikoden. A very well thought out game with moving story.

A hands down exceptional game.

Let's get one thing out of the way right now: The graphics in Suikoden are terrible. They look like they came from a 16-bit engine, and one that wasn't even trying that hard (I saw better graphics on Phantasy Star II for the Genesis... yes, I have been playing games that long). The battle sequences look a little better (you can rotate the battlefield maps after locating a special item), but they're nothing to scream about. Nonetheless, I gave this game five stars, for the simple reason that almost every other aspect of the game is fantastic. The sound is great, the menu system is simple and intuitive, and a "Free Will" option during the battles enables you to dispatch easy opponents in under ten seconds.

However, I'd like to get away from the component system of rating games (sound = 8.0, graphics = 4.5, etc.) and concentrate on the only factor that really matters: is the game fun to play? The answer for Suikoden is a resounding "yes!"

The game is loosely based on The Water Margin, a Chinese epic. You assume the role of the son of Teo McCloud, one of the Five Generals of the Scarlet Moon Empire. In the course of the game, your character transitions from daddy's protected son to freedom fighter, rebel leader, general, and finally the Great Hope for the citizens of the Scarlet Moon Empire. You will see friends die, one-time enemies join, and other members of your group betray you. Up to 108 characters can join, though not all as fighters. Some will sell armor, some will teleport characters around, etc. While not all characters are well developed (with 108 people, how in depth can you get?), the central characters are well described and believable to anyone with any knowledge of Chinese culture (particularly Confucian values). The only major downside in the game play department is the shortness of the game; I finished in just under fifteen hours. Despite this, the epic scope of the plot made the game seem much longer. Fans of role playing games (as opposed to RPG graphics) will appreciate this title.

This game is one of the best games i've played. I've played it for 11 hours straight. It has three types of fighting styles: regular rpg style, one on one, and major fighting style (like 9,000 vrs 10,000 people). I would also like to say this game was so good that my step-dad played it and he barely ever plays vidio games.

*Note: It didn't take me 11 hours to beat, took me about 30 or 40 hours.

This game has every thing an RPG should, and then some! Even though its graphics are a little old, it still rules. Besides what matters is the story, right. And what a story it is. Collecting all 108 Members for your army adds huge amounts to the replay value, since you're sure to miss two or three the first time around.

This is one of the best...ever...

Excellent game, great story with 108 characters too collect,2D graphics suit the game perfectly giving it a very 'classic' feel(nostalgia sets in...).The musical score is one of the best in any PSX RPG i have ever played(and that's a lot) If u like RPG's you'll love this...

My favorite Playstation game

I've heard that I'm the only person in the world who feels this way, but this is my FAVORITE playstation game. Is there anyone else out there who thinks that? I liked it even better than Final Fantasy, which is my second favorite. It had everything I liked about Final Fantasy - the story, the character development, the battles, the little stories building between the different characters, that sense of progress - but it was easier to play, moved faster, and if anything, put me in more fun situations - like getting to gamble in a bar, getting to decide who will be on "teams" together, getting to build my own castle. I was always smiling while I played it, and OK, don't laugh ... literally wept when one of my "friends" in the game died. I was so sad when the game was over, all I wanted to do was buy part two. I've played part two now, and I like it. But there will always be something about this first one that I like best. I'm sort of jealous of people who have never played it, because they get to start from the beginning without knowing what's going to happen.
