Good game!

The story and the characters are both very good, there are some things in this game that can be quite annoying (you have to befriend a murderer to complete 108 Stars - WTF??), but overall this game is enjoyable.

A GOOD RPG

Let's get one thing out of the way right now: The graphics in Suikoden are terrible. They look like they came from a 16-bit engine, and one that wasn't even trying that hard (I saw better graphics on Phantasy Star II for the Genesis... yes, I have been playing games that long). The battle sequences look a little better (you can rotate the battlefield maps after locating a special item), but they're nothing to scream about. Nonetheless, I gave this game five stars, for the simple reason that almost every other aspect of the game is fantastic. The sound is great, the menu system is simple and intuitive, and a "Free Will" option during the battles enables you to dispatch easy opponents in under ten seconds.

However, I'd like to get away from the component system of rating games (sound = 8.0, graphics = 4.5, etc.) and concentrate on the only factor that really matters: is the game fun to play? The answer for Suikoden is a resounding "yes!"

The game is loosely based on The Water Margin, a Chinese epic. You assume the role of the son of Teo McCloud, one of the Five Generals of the Scarlet Moon Empire. In the course of the game, your character transitions from daddy's protected son to freedom fighter, rebel leader, general, and finally the Great Hope for the citizens of the Scarlet Moon Empire. You will see friends die, one-time enemies join, and other members of your group betray you. Up to 108 characters can join, though not all as fighters. Some will sell armor, some will teleport characters around, etc. While not all characters are well developed (with 108 people, how in depth can you get?), the central characters are well described and believable to anyone with any knowledge of Chinese culture (particularly Confucian values). The only major downside in the game play department is the shortness of the game; I finished in just under fifteen hours. Despite this, the epic scope of the plot made the game seem much longer. Fans of role playing games (as opposed to RPG graphics) will appreciate this title.

Can't wait till part 2

I've beat this game 4 times already and I'm going for the fifth time trying to get all the characters. I want part 2 real bad cause this series is the best ever. I think it's better then final fantasy with all the characters and the storyline. And it all connects. You can use data from part one in part 2 so it's cool. And I want part 3 but I need part two first. Excellent game.

this is what i think...

I personally thought that suikoden is one of the best series made in ps, perhaps even better than the final fantasy series. I've played ff7,8, and 9 and i still wanna go back to playing suikoden. although the graphics can't compare, to me the plot is much more realistic. the music is great too and the whole castle, duel, characters system is great. i would recommend this to everyone who doesn't mind the old 2D-ish graphics.

RPG fans: BUY NOW

If you like rpg's you will like this game. I looked over the reviews and agree with everyone who gave it a good rating (I think only 3 bad because they say it is too easy or they don't like the music). The fact is the only better rpg you're going to get belong to the FF series. If you haven't played this game before dish out the ten bucks or whatever amazon is asking for it you cheapskate you will not be sorry (Unless you are some retard who buys games for their background music or someone who wants to play a game so hard you have to loose 1000 times in the process of beating it).

One of the Games That Got Me Started as a RPGer

Being the first RPG released for the playstation, and from a company such as konami which I had never seen make an RPG before really had been wondering how this would help the success of the newly found Playstation Game Console. Me, being the game guy I am, got Playstation the day it came out and was looking for the best games around. I first rented this game and I was amazed. A RPG that has more then 8 characters in the game. In this game you have the capability of getting 108 (no joke folks) characters that are all different some how way or shape. Along with a great storyline, will have you sucked in for hours on end. Take my advice, I have beaten this game 6 times and I'm still not tired of it, go for it! Goodluck shopping/browsing everyone!....

P.S.In Suikoden II you can load the data from Suikoden which allows more characters. So besides Konami being total genius, you should get out there, get this game and get all 108 characters!

It cant be beat

Even though Suikoden II is out the first one still socks. Not only is it cheap but the gameplay and awsome soundtrack compliment the game well. Even though the graphics arent that hot the game itself seems to grab you. Overall the game had a good story line and kept me interseted through the entire game.

this game is the best! I played this game when I was like, maybe, 10-11 years old, I can't get over it. I'm still playing! I'm even writing a book that was inspired by this world shattering game. The storyline is better than Tactics in the FF series.
