I can't seem to get into the story

This is a good RPG overall, but it has it's flaws. First of all, the story is very hard to get into, especially at the beginning, and the diolouge won't help you. The graphics were decent for it's time, but now they are not so good, but it's the quality, right? The magic system is one the worst I've seen, but it is needed. They're are 108 characters in this game, readers, don't be overwhelmed, a good majority of them are useless, so it will be easier to decide. Overall this is good, but it may not be for everyone. When you get a chance, run down to your video store and rent it, then you'll see.

A fun, enjoyable RPG

After hearing tons of good reviews for this game, i decided to give it a try. Anyway, I picked up Suikoden not really knowing what to expect, and I was surprised. For an RPG that came out before Final Fantasy 7, it was quite good.

The story is simple. You are the son of a great general in the emperor's army, when he soon leaves to go to battle; you get a job working for the emperor. Soon later, you stumble onto a secret, your father has been serving the wrong side, and now you must lead an army to defeat the evil emperor.

Even though the story is a little unoriginal, it still unfolds very nicely. The character delevopment is good, but nowhere near as good as Chrono Trigger or Xenogears. The battle system is turn - based (i hit you, you hit me) and the rune system is good, but it could have been carried out a little better.

The main problem with Suikoden is that it is too short. With monster games out right now that take 60 + hours to beat such as Grandia and Xenogears, Suikoden only has about 20-25 hours. However, the replay is high with trying to find all 108 playable characters. The game is also very easy, which may annoy experienced RPG gamers.

Anyway, Suikoden is a fun and enjoyable RPG that can be bought for a very [good] price. It should take you at least a few months to find all the 108 characters without using a walkthrough. Pick it up and see for yourself, you won't be disappointed.

Awsome game for any RPG fan.

I rented this game along time ago with a few friends, but usually when I look at the title image I can tell what kind of game it would be, but after starting it, it was awsome and started me into being a hugh Suikoden fan. The 2-D graphics may be a turn down for most players out there, but the story line is awsome and there are alot of interesting characters to recruit. I highly recommend this game if you've played 2 or 3, or just need a good game to play.

Ok. I started the game (and read alot of talking) to begin my game... but once on my first mission, I was completely HOOKED! I kept playing and playing (and losing) and playing... until I won the game... (but i got the bad ending,) so I watched the credits roll, only to find out I screwed up and needed more people. I played again getting more, then I beat the game again... and forgot about another person! That's the fun of it... trying to get what you want. It makes the game very challenging. Trust me, try to get this game! It's really worth it (unless you have no Playstation)! I got my game second-hand, but thank ... it wasn't broken! Find and get this game at all costs! Well... not at all costs. You might not have enough money to get it. Just try it out then! Trust me. Oh yeah, make sure you have a memory card, or else you wont get that far... unless you stay up all night and day.

One of the best RPGs on PlayStation

This game won't overwhelm you with incredible graphics. There are no 3D animations or special effects that you see in many RPGs today. But if you are able to appreciate great RPGs, this game will overwhelm you with powerful storyline, charismatic characters, and touching music. If you can see past the cool graphics and glitz that cover many of the RPGs today, there isn't much content. To borrow an old Asian proverb, "Empty can makes the most noise". That's not the case with Suikoden. A very well thought out game with moving story.

Sukeoden (i spelt it wrong) is an awesome game in all respects but i'll give the bad news first and fast. it has bad grafics and a some really bad battle music and thats it.For the good news it has a really nice plot which unfolds slowly, in the game a friend dies and if you get 108 people to join your army( some of which are weak or just plain useless)he (or she ) is resorected,a really awesome army to army mode with tons of little guys running around and going to heaven as they are killed, an easy battle mode and you can change which noises you here whenever you open a scroll.

The only RPG meeting the ranks of Final Fantasy 7

This is the only game to meet the ranks of Final Fantasy 7. Over 108 characters, beautiful music, old school graphics which I have yearned to see once again in RPG's,and a moving plot. Everything which Final Fantasy may have once had.

"Some people" think Wild Arms is better than Suikoden...do not listen to these people. Wild Arms does not compare to Suikoden. Wild Arms isn't half the game Suikoden is. In addition to that, Suikoden is way longer and better than Wild Arms. This game has a real story with many detailed events, a great game that will have you coming back for more. I've never played a better rpg (besided maybe FF3). This game has everything. Don't be fooled, you'll probably enjoy this game a lot more that FF7 & FF8 simply because this is not a boring game. The newer of the Final Fantasy series seem to drag on and get boring very easily but that doesn't happen with this game. If you haven't played it, play it and seriously consider buying it if you're into rpgs.

Timeless Classic

Ok so I slept on Suikoden when it first came out but the fact that I am writing a review on this game about a decade after it's initial release is a testament to how good it actually is. I played it for the first time about a month before I got my PS2 and fell in love with it even though it was antiquated graphically. Although to be fair I like the graphics particularly in the sequel they both have a suttle charm to them once you get into the game a ways. The cast of characters in the game is unparalleled and while it may not have the development of all the characters in three the leads are fully fleshed out and there are plenty of the other characters that have their moments(Pahn is my personal favorite). The story is a perfect balance of old and new as you fight against the Scarlet Moon Empire from your island castle. The army battles are the best in the serious and some of the more fun moments in any game. Don't sleep on Suikoden you need to own it if you love RPG's and for all of you for who Sui3 was your first experience with the series you will love the original if you like 3.

it can't get better than this

suikoden 1 a game you won't stop playing. As you play you get the most cool charecters of the 108 stars of destiny.People might think its not good by its cover but it is the best game in the world .Mini games,27 true runes,108 stars of destiny, and much much much more.Enter a ancient world of bravery, mysticism, and war.Change your party of charecter using any of over 100 recruits that you meet on your mission.Build a castle fortress to headquarter your army.watch as your castle grows as more charecters join you.Untravel the secret of the empire ,unlock the meaning of the 27 true runes, and discover the 108 stars of destiny.Multiply batle modes, one-on-one duels banded fight, even full-scale army vs.army.So go out there right now because most of them are sold out it will be hard to find them REAL RARD.
