One of the greatest games of all time

I just bought my PS2 the other day and Twisted Metal: Black was the first game I bought for it. Where as Twisted Metal 3 and 4 were extremely disappointing, the developers at Incog Inc. have taken the series back to it's roots of the first two Twisted Metal games (a few of th developers at Incog were the original designers of the first two games), while injecting a mother load of shockingly violent and disturbing images that combine with the series' trademark dark (in this case very dark)humor. The graphics are absolutely unbelieveable, the combat arenas are huge, the frame rate never drops or drags (even in multiplayer mode), the lighting effects are excellent, and the landscapes look shockingly real. The sound is excellent as well, combining an orchestral score with industrial Nine Inch Nails-esque music, not to mention the Rolling Stones "Paint It Black" used as the music during the game's end credits (whoever came up with that idea is a genius), and the song fits the tone of the game like a glove. The control is super tight, its layed out exactly like the control scheme in TM 1&2, although it can be kind of tricky at first until you get the hang of all the weapons. The characters are very well done as are their cinematics and the overall storyline (its like a graphic novel come to life), but be warned: there are many disturbing images and graphicly violent scenes throughout the game, but those over the age of 14 shouldn't have much trouble swallowing it. All in all, I am very glad I purchased Twisted Metal: Black, I love it and can't get enough of it, and if you own a PS2 it is a sin not to own this game.

Forget what you know about Twisted Metal

My first step into the car destuction genere of games was Twisted Metal 3. Needless to say I thought the game sucked but thats another story. Anyways, I decided to buy TMB just because of all the great previews and have never made abetter gaming decision since buying Star Ocean 2.

Iam a huge Marilyn Manson, Slipknot and Nine Inch Nails fan, and this game seems to draw insperation from those bands visually. This game is dark, ugly, and always disturbing. The character stories are the star of the game and you will find yourself wanting to go through all there movies just to find out what happens to them. And we you find out the reason for there insanity the effect is always shocking, Needless to say this game is mature and your kids will probably worship SweetTooth which is something you do not want.

As far as graphics and gameplay goes, there all top notch. The frame-rate is always solid ( no slowdown ) and the visuals are just amazing. Launching a homing missile and watching it hit your oppenent a couple miles away is breathtaking.

The control has a learning curve, but once you master it you will never look back... And the real reason why TMB is the best in the series is simply because there ARE NO ROB ZOMBIE SONGS ANYWERE! Seriosly, this is a must have. Go buy it... Now!

WOW!!! This game is amazing!!

Before buying this game I would recommend picking up plenty of ..., ..., Mountain Dew, Coffee and anything else that will help keep you awake during your normal working hours, because Twisted Metal Black will rob you of all of your sleep.

Twisted Metal Black is the best game in this series. It has incredibly fun and addictive gameplay, incredible grapics, and great sound. The levels are somewhat dark, but it truly adds to the atmosphere in the game.

I was blown away by the level design, and how easy it was to become deeply entranced by this game. When the lighting struck right in front of me in the suburbs, when the storm front moved in, I was simply amazed. Nothing like this has ever been seen in video games before. The levels all seem to be incredibly large, and include buildings that you can drive through and destroy, weather changes and an onslaught of powerups. There are lots characters to choose from, and some to unlock which adds to challenge, and replay value. The Cinemas are top notch...very nicely done.

I played this game for 5 hours straight the first night, and I didn't want to stop playing it. It is the most fun game to be released for the PS2 since SSX.

Bottomline....this game has fantastic grapics, excellent gameplay and sound, and tons of replay value. I would give this one 6 stars if ... allowed it.

Highly Recommended!!

There is OBVIOUSLY some bias towards this game by A GAMER!

There is every reason to believe that this game will be a great game. I frequent three gaming sites and they all agree that this game is one to watch. Stages that have areas that unfold to make the levels larger: One level starts off in an enclosed arena and then the doors open up and you see that you are on a moving ocean liner, then the ship lands on an island and the inland becomes playable. That is cool!

Many characters, each with their own story that are revealed as you play as each one. Great gameplay and great graphics. Do yourself a favor and ignore the "1" ratings that seem to be showing up on this game, ...

This game rocks

Notice I said "rocks" and not "is gonna rock" ... where people get off reviewing a game they haven't played yet is a bit beyond me. Twisted Metal Black banishes the horrid controls of the latter installments into the video game netherworld and brings back the glorious carnage of the earlier games. The three controller configurations should please pretty much everyone...I prefer using the directional pad over the analog stick so "Control Freak" works for me. Tight turns, sudden stops, and driving in reverse present no problem whatsoever. An excellent balance is struck where the different vehicles and weapons are concerned. Spectre and Axel seem to be a little more bothersome than the others, but no one character constantly dominates. The weapons, both character-specific and pick-up, are all useful and replenish themselves fairly quickly (a good thing, since your machine gun can get overheated). Some require a bit of practice to use, but most players won't have much difficulty getting the hang of them. The "special" manuevers aren't hard to pull off and, mercifully, you can no longer get away with repeatedly freezing a foe and hitting them with everything you've got while they can't do anything. The same goes for your enemies; the computer scrupulously keeps track of their energy gauges and does not allow them to cheat. TMB boasts a good selection of interactive arenas in which to do battle. Usually, in video games, "interactive" means that there's maybe one or two objects in the entire stage that can be destroyed or altered in some way. Not so here! If something looks like you could wreck it by driving a car into it in real life, you can probably do it here, too, especially in the huge Suburbs stage, where just about EVERYTHING you see is fair game for destruction (look for the ferris wheel). You might get so carried away causing property damage and running over pedestrians, you lose track of what your adversaries are up to...

The framerate is smooth as silk; I have yet to experience any sort of slowdown. Anyone here ever played WipeOut 3 for PlayStation? If so, then you know how smooth IT is. Well, after playing TMB for a while, I decided to do a little WipeOut 3 (a game I never get tired of) and, by comparison, it seemed so choppy I thought my TV was being shaken like a can of paint in a hardware store. It's that smooth. Much has been made of the dark atmosphere of this game, and rightly so. Bright colors are rare, stories are warped, and the developers spared us another Rob Zombie soundtrack and created a supremely fitting original score. The music in this game sounds like something you'd hear in a modern Hollywood action movie (a GOOD one). TMB is one of the few games outisde of the role-playing and survival horror genres where the mood really grabs you. The only other games I can think of that can compete with it in terms of dark atmosphere are Deception III and the two Legacy of Kain games (Blood Omen and Soul Reaver). My gripes with the game are minimal; Mr. Slam doesn't return, Minion is a real pain, and the detonators are gone (remember blowing up the Eifel Tower in TM2?). Aside from that, I see dearth of reason to give TMB anything less than a five-star rating. This is truly a must-own game, in every sense of that overused term.

Wow

This game is great!!! Bringing back the old crew to do this game was the best thing Incog Inc. could have done. There is no slowdown even in 4-player mode! The graphics are amazing. Your car has special spot that your weapons come out of and drivers run away from the burning wreck of their cars. The weather effects are great. The rain changes direction with your car, and sometimes can obstruct your view like real rain. The gameplay is great with 3 difficulty levels to choose from (I think it's 3, but I'd have to check) The fact that you are given rewards throughout the game and at the end gives it a high replay value. The controls are the same as the previous twisted metal games making it easy for TM vets to play. The only downside to this game is the levels are only expanded versions of TM1 with better graphics, but that doesn't affect my rating. I definately recommend this game!

One of the best games ever made

This game would have been rated 4 1/2 stars if it were possible. Just wanted to get that said. I had never really played a Twisted Metal title until I picked up TM:B-my decision to purchase the game before ever playing it was based on the incredible previews I had been seeing ever since the game was announced. The dark, gruesome atmosphere definitely piqued my interest, and any game that purports to push the power of the PlayStation 2 has got to be a winner-if it succeeds. TM:B does not disappoint.

It's gruesome alright. As a mature gamer (let's just say that I remember the days of the Sears TV Game and the Magnavox Odyssey), I thinks it's great that Sony is willing to market a game that Nintendo wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole because of its disturbing content. We're talking scenes that would be trimmed from an R-rated horror movie. A lot of them were definitely inspired by The X-Files and movies like Se7en and The Silence of the Lambs and are decidedly not for kids. But those are just the story scenes and character intros. The game itself is violent, but not graphically so. There are some piercing screams when an opponent (or a player) is destroyed, and the driver of the vehicle goes running off engulfed in flames-but, hey, this is just a game after all.

The graphics are sharp and the frame-rate is smooth and consistent at 60 fps. There is a tad bit of slowdown in the split-screen mode, but it's hardly noticeable. The cars are wonderfully designed and show lots of clever details. Switching weapons is fun just to watch the car metamorphose as the new weapon is readied for use. The control is literally PERFECT for the gameplay-intuitive and responsive, and variable depending on the stats of the vehicle being controlled. The only control gripe I have is that the Twisted Metal series are the only car-based games that don't use the X button as the accelerator. Enemy AI is spot-on and vehicle physics, while absolutely unrealistic, are perfectly suited to gameplay as well. Environments range from "Massive" to "Very Small" and are all amazingly detailed and enhance enjoyment of the game. Sound is great, from the aforementioned tortured screams of defeat to explosions and shrieking missiles. The in-game music is the best I've ever heard. All the tunes are gothic, classical and heavy metal/industrial takes on the theme of the Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black". Very original concept for a video game, and it really adds to the dark atmosphere.

Everything about Twisted Metal: Black is impressive. Any mature gamer owes it to him/herself to check out this game ASAP.

The BEST PS2 Game yet!!

I just bought this today. Boy am I impressed! I thought I was playing and X-BOX game!! How can you possibly have such HUGE levels, 60 frames per second gameplay, so bright, realisic explosions, and so much interaction with the environment in just one disc? Well I don't know..but I didn't know PS2 was cabable of all this! This game is well worth it's price..you must buy it, especially if you are a Twisted Metal fan like me! When you play this game, you will agree this is the BEST game for PS2 out right now. And with an online-play add on in winter, this is the ultimate game. When I played this game, I wondered why they couldn't do all this in Unreal Tournament..such a horrible game compared to this one! And don't show this game to little kids..I warned you. Check out ...and see their rating..they gave it a 9.5, and IGN.com gave it a 9.6. Don't ask anymore question..just go and BUY IT !!

Best game on PS2, one of the best games ever

Reading this review is really just wasting time. This game is a "must have" if there ever was one. This is without a doubt, THE best game on PS2. If you're a fan of the Twisted Metal series you'll especially love this game. It has a great selection of characters, and you'll want to play through the game with each and every one (theres around 15 i believe). This game has some characters from recent twisted metal games, some new characters, and even some characters from the original Twisted Metal game. The story lines are strange (all of the characters are escapees from a mental asylum) yet extremely interesting. However, this game is NOT FOR CHILDREN. This is again an amazing game, that you'll play for a long long time, but please don't buy this for younger kids, its much too explicit for them. I'd agree with the esrb rating of 17+.

Really, REALLY fun game, best PS2 graphics (best console graphics ever) along with great sound, unbeatable control, and amazing lighting effects.

NOTE: This game does have a SHARP learning curve, it will possibly get you VERY frustrated the first few hours of playing. But just hang in there, play it on Easy for a little to sharpen your skills, and you will most likely want to adjust the control setting because the default configuration is not good quite frankly. Honestly, although its real tough at first, this game has the best learning curve of any game ever, after a while you get to where you can seriously beat anyone. The first night played the game, I thought the game was too hard and too frustrating. But the next day I played it some more and eventually got the hang of it. It might make you mad at first, but once you get good at it its really worth it. When I say you gotta get good at it, i'm not talking play the game for weeks to get good, all it takes is a day or two. The final boss, Warhawk, seems almost impossible, at first, but i'm to the point now where i can get him on my first or second life (of 3 lives).

Bottom line, this is a must have game that will not dissappoint you. I wouldn't be wasting my time writing this review if the game wasn't that good. BUY IT! This game will be money very well spent.

***If you spent the money on a PS2, you really owe it to yourself to spend more to get a Monster Cable S-Video cable. The difference in picture quality is amazing, DEFINITELY well worth the price. I'm using one of those cables hooked up to my Sony Wega tv, which I also very highly recommend. All of those things together will make your ps2 experience the best it can be.

What is wrong with Incognito's minds.

...I played this game about three weeks ago for the first time and all I could think of at night was sweet tooth muttering "All the people I didn't kill." This is truly a Freaky...game. Do not get this for your child if he is under 13. I hvae beaten it w/ every character and all of the stories are psycotic. To Mr. Grimm's flesh craving, to Sweet Tooth's head, everything has a story behind it. Everyone is a freak except Raven and Agent Stone.

This is the most sadistic, physotic game ever...and I wouldn't have it any other way!!!
