O.K. people here is the deal. I give this game a five because it's a very massive game. The game is the best thing to come by for a teenager. But not for kids because, this game as you can see, is mature. It is very violent and brutal. Don't get me wrong it is the best game for playstion 2 in my opion. it got the highest rating for PS2 out of the rest of the games. The creators of 1 & 2 are back. Part 3 & 4 was made by 989 studios. That is why the game changed. This is a turn of the worse in my opinion. But now the company is back with a new name. If you have heard from Electronic Expo, that later on they will make a add-on package to it later in the year to make TMB online compatible for the ultimate deathmatch. That is what I had read. Oh what was that? Repeat it? Should you buy it? Well...........OF COURSE IT IS A MUST BUY. Now hurry before some little kid who likes the clown in front of the box takes it!

All you people that gave this game one star

Heres a little explanation of why TMB will be great. I have researched this game for a while and I have heard nothing but praise. Gamespot, gamepro and ign all say this is an amazing game, Even in its early stages. The levels are huge! The cars are detailed better then ever. This game will fully use PS2 graphical capabilities. I saw some of the movies for the one player mode and they are freaky! This game was meant to be sadistic and that is exactly what they did. The game will run at 60 frames per second... even in multiplayer. That is pretty impressive. So the guys at Incognito will make a great TM game again. No surprises here. And for the one star reviewers research before you open your mouth. Dont listen to the japanese

Great game

I have only played one of the other twisted metal games, but I can only imagine this one is the best. This is a great multiplayer game, although when you are looking at only half the screen it sort of takes away from your peripheral view of your opponents. I have a multitap, and unless you have a 60" screen tv I dont see this being very much fun with more than 2 players.

Everything else about the game is digital bliss, an array of excellent weapons, a great selection of vehicles and personalities, and an excellent plot. This game will give you hours of gaming pleasure. The controls are very easy to get the hang of, and now every time I play a driving game I am dissappointed with the controls after playing this.

The levels in this game are very grim looking and the overall brightnsess of the picture is dark, but this is ok because it makes the explosions and weapon fire stand out even more. I love this game and I am very happy I spent 50$ on it. I bought Spy Hunter at the same time and was not so thrilled. This game has dominated my console, even over Grand Theft Auto 3, there is just so much more action. This is a very fast paced shoot em'up with a demolition derby twist.

Twisted Metal Black has all the ingredients of a classic video game. Hats off to the developers.

Perhaps the best vehicular combat game ever created!

Talk to any hardcore "Twisted Metal" fan, and they'll say two things: the first two games were excellent, and the next two were terrible, which can be attributed to the fact that the series changed hands between different developers. So when the original developers were brought back to the series, they decided to do one thing: rebuild the genre of vehicular combat from scratch. The end result is "Twisted Metal: Black", a darker, more sinister version of its Playstation cousins. But it's all for the best, because "TM:B" has to be the best game in the "Twisted Metal" series and one of the must-have titles of the Playstation2.

There is a reason why this game has the subtitle "Black" attached to it. "TM:B" is one of those games that doesn't just meet the requirements of an M-rated title; it lives up to it. Themes found in this game include homicide, depression, suicide, self-mutilation, medical malpractice, and physical abuse. Don't believe me? Watch any of the game's characters' opening sequences (particularly Sweet Tooth's), and you'll understand why this game belongs in the same category as "Grand Theft Auto III".

But the shock factor isn't just for show. The stories of all the twisted, demented characters are deep and powerful, giving them depth and personality. A player actually wants to help his chosen character win, actually wants his character to defeat all the other characters so that Calypso, the mysterious host of the Twisted Metal tournaments, can grant the winner what his heart desires. It's pulled off so perfectly that you'd almost forget you're rooting for a homicidal maniac or a fanatical preacher or whatever character you've chosen.

In terms of gameplay, "Twisted Metal: Black" makes you earn your way through the game. The controls can be complex at first, but once they're mastered it's almost like second-nature. Each character has his own unique vehicle, and each vehicle handles differently. Some are slow but can take a ton of damage, while others are weak but are unbelievably fast. Each vehicle also has its own unique Special Attack. For example, Sweet Tooth's icecream truck can transform into a robot that fires a hailstorm of homing missiles, while Outlaw sends a stream of locked-on, powerful bullets from the roof of his police vehicle. And all other weapons like missiles and gas cans have their own unique placement on each character's vehicle; the game is worth buying just to see where the weaponry is located on each vehicle.

The AI in the game can be described in one word: brutal. One mistake will result in serious damage, and each opponent knows when to fight and when to run. Players looking for a deep experience don't have to look farther than "Twisted Metal: Black". Probably the only fault in the gameplay is the lack of an all-out brawl in multiplayer. Players can fight each other in multiplayer, but not with any AI vehicles as well. The team battle mode does have an all-out brawl and somewhat makes up for it, but players in team battle mode share lives, which is questionable at best.

Graphically, "TM:B" is amazing. Even with titles such as "Metal Gear Solid 2", "Final Fantasy X". and "Grand Theft Auto III" out already, "Twisted Metal: Black" still looks impressive. It runs at a solid frame rate, even in multiplayer, and the loading times are minimal. The frame rate does slow down occassionaly when the front-back view (looking in front and behind at the same time) is selected, but it's not really that important. The environments are dark and eerie, giving the game the atmosphere its title of "Black" proclaims, and most of them are massive, which is a testament to how the PS2 can be used probably. And the characters' vehicles are all detailed and uniquely designed, showing how dedicated the developers were to bringing the series back to its former glory.

Soundwise, the game can't get any better. The dark music in each stage sets the mood right, and sounds like missile screams and explosions are top-notch. And the voice-overs for each character are Academy-Award worthy, making them believable and realistic. Listen to Sweet Tooth's movie sequences and you'll understand just how sinister he is. Listen to Billy Ray's sequences and you feel the immense pain in his heart. This level of realism brings vehicular combat to a new level of enjoyment.

All in all, "Twisted Metal: Black" is undoubtedly a must-have for vehicular combat fans, and is a worthy addition to any PS2 owner's library. Be warned: this game lives up to its Mature rating; anyone who can't handle an R-rated movie should stay away from this game. But any gamer who is mature enough to handle "Grand Theft Auto III" should be more than comfortable with the dark nature of "TM:B". And the multiplayer shortcomings will be more than made up for when "Twisted Metal: Black Online" is released.

The newest Twisted Metal is the best yet. Twisted Metal Black is one of the best games fo PS2 hands down. Besides beautiful graphics, TM:B has gigantic battlegrounds and almost everything everywhere can be destroyed.

Parents should only purchace this product if they trust their child because of the violance and the character's intro movies. Even some of their faces will scare you half to death. But if you can get your hands on this game, you really should.

TM:B also has challenging bosses to face and also bonus characters can be unlocked. Weapons have changed for the better I think. There are plenty of all-new battlegrounds to tear apart, too.

My favorite battleground is probably the Suburb. In single-player mode, there are plenty of pedestrions When you destroy someone, a man on fire runs away from the wreckage. Also, my favorite character has always been Spectre. And to see him (or her) return is awesome. When Twisted Metal 3 and 4 came out I was happy about seeing Spectre in 3, but not 4.

In all, TM:B is my all-time FAVORITE game for any platform. It's just too cool.

The series that started it all is back in stride

My goodness! This has to best of the series edging out TM2 in my opinion. Very fast, handles great and has a *really* fun 4 man multiplayer. There are about 15 different characters(including Sweet Tooth!) and about 11 levels for single player and 18 for multiplayer, so there is alot variety. Some levels are compact and some aremassive, like the Suburbia level for example. Dont ask me how they did it, but they made this game run at an almost perfect 60fps at all times, even with realtime weather conditions on some levels with pouring rain and heavy snow. Thats unbelievable considering all the particle explosion effects, players and landscape this title shows all on screen at once, with no noticeable fog in the background......amazing. The Soundtrack is sweet. Its very dyanamic as well. For example, when there is alot of action on screen, the music will get louder and play more riffs, but for those couple quiet moments, the music will dim down a bit and make things peaceful. It adds so much to the game, espescially i you have a Dolby Surround sound system. The destruction and speed of this game compliments this series really well, taken to the next level with the better technology obviously. The particle effects are amazing and the maneuvers, handling and physics are extremely polished. It is a little difficult but not enough to get frustrated, well maybe sometimes, but definitely challenging. Thankfully there are cheats you can use if its gets too hard. The multiplayer is also a blast. 2 or 4 player splitscreen and stil runs at 60 fps most of the time, even in 4 player! I mean it, this is the most enjoyable multiplayer game I've played in a while. Lot of unlockables, CG stories for each character, short load times, very slick menus and sweet music. There's really nothing I can gripe about. This is THE best car combat game on the market. Again, welcome back Incognito, you made the TM series great once again. Buy it!

I have been a fan of "Twisted Metal" since the first one on PS One. So my review might be a little biased. For those of you who have played any or all of the games will agree on the flowing. TM1 (Single Track): the original, the best, set the standard for free-roaming games to come. TM2 (Single Track): Bigger levels, more variety, tougher enemies and better controls. TM3 (989 Studios): good graphics, great music, difficult controls, bad story, and bad handling. TM4 (989 Studios): Was rated so bad I didn't even bother. As a fan I was infuriated at the turn the series was taking. Then when the PS2 came out I had hope. For a revived, and appealing Twisted Metal game was being developed by the creators of the game. With "Twisted Metal Black" I feel some one got the message. For you folks that haven't even herd of this game here is the basic story. You are one of several contestants who enter in a free-for-all tournament to win the ultimate prize, what ever you want. The game is basically vehicle-warfare with you as the driver. The last one standing (or breathing as the case may be) at the end of the level wins.

TMB takes a darker course than any previous game in the series. First off, all of the games main drivers are from an insane asylum. The main character is a serial killer that wares a clown mask and drives an ice cream truck. Other characters include a suicidal cop (driver of Outlaw), a hell bent preacher (driver of Tombstone), and an ex-POW veteran of Nam (Mr. Grim) just to name a few.

Graphics and control are a big plus in this game. The action is fast paced and frantic, pushing you to the limit. Frame rate is good though-out single player and slows a little with the 2-4 player modes, depending on how many opponents are on the screen. This doesn't take much from the game experience. The enemy AI is top-notch. Much like your human opponents, the bad guys won't just sit still while you hammer them with your missiles. They will run, counterattack, and/or go for the nearest health item. They will even pepper you with long-range attacks and hit-&-runs to [get] you. The animation adds an extra level to the darkness. As you progress through the menu, you'll see the length of witch the developers went to envelop the game in darkness. Each character has deep story, and personality to them. My favorite is the serial-killing clown known as Sweet Tooth (he's the one on the cover). Another level of detail added to the game is the amount of destruction you can cause. For example: in The Junkyard, there is a spot where you can [bring] down passenger planes from the sky, causing it to crash into a nearby building a short while later.

In short this is one of the best games of 2001, just short of perfect! You will have fun playing, no question about it!!

My favorite PS2 game

Twisted Metal: Black is part of a long line of vehicle combat games that began on the PSOne. This one is the most advanced and complex of them all (NOTE: there is a brand new version for the PSP that I have not played yet); however, the game plays pretty much just like every version that has been released since the old PSOne days. The game is fun, but it almost feels like it is becoming dated. The plus side is you can probably find it for pretty cheap nowadays.

The game moves FAST and can be a little difficult to play at first. Unless you've played a Twisted Metal game before you will probably need to switch to the Easy setting against the computer until you get used to the controls and the speed of the game. The graphics are decent even by today's standards, and the levels can get to be pretty large and intricate, but you are going to be moving so fast to avoid enemies that you don't get much time to enjoy them. The music and lighting gives the game an eerie sort of feel that reminds me of the old Quake games.

In single-player mode you get three options: Story, Challenge, and Endurance. The Challenge and Endurance modes are pretty much just a practice for the Story mode, where you will spend most of your time playing individually. The gist of story mode is you pick one of a group of cars/drivers who has some problem that can be solved by winning this car destruction tournament. Being that the story has nothing to do with gameplay, and each story is of some deranged lunatic that follows the same pattern, you may get bored with the story pretty easiliy and just skip the screens to get to the action. Additional cars and levels can be unlocked in the Story mode, so you will want to spend some time playing it even if the story gets a little boring.

The real fun of this game is the Multi-player mode. You can play a 2-player co-operative Story game but I find it more fun to go head-to-head against others. There is nothing like challenging a friend to some violent car-destruction action (Or up to three friends if you have a Multi-tap). The Story mode can get a little repetitive after a while, but it's always a lot fun to destroy your friend's cars!
