This review is for the return of the king. I have found this imformation from the game maker's themselves in a chatroom. This game has no definite due date but so far it is in October 2003. You can play as Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Frodo, Sam,and you can unlock 2-4 hidden characters. The smallest level is at least 2 times the size of the biggest Two Towers level. Also, unlike the Two Towers, it is 2 player, so you can play with a friend. And, you just don't play the parts from the Return of the King, but parts from the fellowship and the two towers. There are more enemies, such as mumakil(the giant elephants from the two towers movie), Haradrim(wicked men from the South),the Army of the dead, and mountain trolls instead of cave trolls. There will still be Uruk'hai and orcs but no goblins. Also, the enemies will be much smarter then the Two Towers. Lastly, expect everything from the Two Towers video game and more....

A Promising Game

This videogame coming out this holiday season should be worth the money, since you get to play as Aragorn and Gimli, along with new playable characters such as Gandalf, Pippin, Frodo, and Sam in the final struggle for Middle-Earth. The two-player cooperative play sounds very exciting and enjoyable, as you can man siege engines, catapults, and other objects with your steadfast partner. Graphics are more defined than The Two Towers game, along with stunning levels from the siege of Minas Tirith to the Cracks of Doom. Foes include orcs and nazgul, as well as the terriyfying Witch-king, the abominable spider Shelob, and the Dark Lord Sauron himself. The Return of the King should be the perfect game for anyone.

There are many good "movie-moments" that die-hard fans will enjoy but this game is far from perfect. Even the most talented gamers will find themelves staring at their TV screens as it displays "you've failed the mission" after failing a mission for the 5th time wondering why they should even bother playing the game any more. The first 2 or 3 missions are realtively easy, you'll probably only have to try them twice. As the game progresses it gets alot more challenging. In one of the missions you have to fight the king of the dead and then escape from his cave as it collapses on top of you. The boss fight is going to take several tries to figure out the technique. After you do manage to kill the king escaping from the cave is extremely tedious and annoying, giant rocks you cant even see kill you instantly even if you have full health. All the levels are annoying, tedious, and repetetive. The combat is extremely repetetive. The attack combos are hard to get right and even if you do they dont do much damage anyway. I would strongly suggest renting this game before buying it. Unless you are very patient and dont mind restarting levels over and over again then this game is not for you. Basically, this game is just fancy graphics with fancy backgrounds and explosions. The combat is the most important part of the game and it's boring and repetetive.
Keep the $50 and go watch the movie 10 times.

it could've been so good......why..........why cruel world!?

This game is worse than its predecessor "The Two Towers". Besides the addition of new playable characters, this game hasn't grown the way a good sequel should. The battle system is identical to the two towers and the level design is just as straight forward as before. The in-game lighting is much improved but thats a minute detail compared to the serious graphics design flaw that the heads up displays are barely legible from any significant distance if you're using a TV smaller than 25". not everyone has a 50" plasma screen in their game room thank you very much. This combined with primitive CGI animations and the sheer fact that the game has no variety should be enough to make the game not worth buying. but seriously, all the levels are too similar, i can only imagine the chief designer saying,"Gee, i think ill spice this level up by putting a kill counter in the corner of the screen" i mean the game is just lame at times. only buy this game if you're a hardcore lord of the rings fan and you can look past the technical flaws and have fun with it, simply because you get to jump around as frodo baggins!

I played the Return of the King demo (for PC) which was released in a magazine and then online. Play is similar to The Two Towers, but a lot better at the same time. The demo level involves Gandalf in Minas Tirith, battling orcs, more orcs, and trolls. The graphics are terrific. Based on this level alone, it is obvious that the environments are going to be much more interactive. Some of the moves have remained the same: fierce attack, speed attack, parry, etc. Now it just looks a lot cooler! I can't wait to play the rest of the game, on my PS2 rather than the computer though. I'll be first in line on November 6...

it's awesome!

i just played it at my neighbors and it is so cool the levels are much more difficult and detailed and the enemies are a lot a harder and the bosses are so hard but the best feature es co-op play i played it with him and it was so awesome you could hit a guy with your weapon while your partner is slingin arrows at him overall it is a great game and a must buy! But wait there are also 3 secret characters who i will leave nameless and you can finally play as gandalf!

LOTR Return of the king is a great game that will have you playing for hours and hours. The graphics are amazing they make the Two Towers game look like an N64 game. The animation is very smooth and who can forget the amazing effect. In the beginning of game you will pick one of three paths to follow. You can pick Sam and Frodoes (play as Sam or Frodo) adventure of getting the ring to Mount Doom. You can pick Gandafs adventure (play as Gandaf) as he helps to take down Isingurd and defend Minas Tirith. The last path to take will allow you to play as Aragorn, Legolas, or Gimli, as they cause all kinds of hell, from fighting dragons, to ghosts, to thousands of Orcs and Goblins, and other things in black armor. There are also three secret characters that you can unlock. (one of them is Golom). Return Of The King will offer more then 15 different levels to play. In a lot of levels you can interact with items and weapons, like shooting a catapult or big battle bows, to climbing latter's and sliding down ropes. A cool new feature to the game is Co-op mode. This means you can fight every level with a friend at your side. If you don't have any friends you can play with a random person online, how cool is that. The only reason I give this game four stars is one the Camera angle can screw you up in some places. At times the camera will be perfect at other times you wont be able to see crap. Another problem is they haven't changed the formula of the game. In almost every level you go to an area kill 50 Orcs and go to the next area. Not all the levels are like that but a lot of them are. Every character has three basic attacks quick attack, fierce attack, and ranged attack, you can also parry. As you kill enemies you will gain experience, which will allow you to buy new attacks and combos. In the end LOTR Return Of The King is a great game, you should definitely by it. Beware they game has movie footage from ROTK and it may spoil it so you might want to hold off till December, but hell I wont.

Improvement on Two Towers, smarter levels, great unlockables

Whereas "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon's" video game was somewhat of a disappointment after watching the film, ROTK succeeds on all points where CTHD failed. The connection between the cinema scenes and the game are practically seamless and well-connected. While Two Towers was fun to play, the levels almost seemed like an afterthought following the film scenes. But ROTK improves on practically all levels. All levels are engaging and not just exercises in "getting you to the next cinematic excerpt." They convey a true sense of mission, and truly feel like you're inhabiting the LOTR world. Having played it on the easy and medium levels as a single player, the difficulty is right-on, and even though some levels, like the Pelennor Fields are rather difficult, the game's levels are just challenging enough to keep you determined to pass the levels, without making you throw your controller down in disgust. Some games have levels making you wonder to the point of disgust what to do, but ROTK is rather intuitive in that you come to know what you have to do, but then you have to follow that up by accomplishing it.
Another great facet is the unlockables. SPOILER secrets coming up.
After you pass the game, you unlock Faramir, Frodo, Merry and Pippin and can go and play the using one of them. Also, there's an unlocked level called "Palantir of Saruman," a ghostly level in which you battle round after round of an assortment of enemies, which you have seen throughout the game -- orcs, uruk-hai, ghost swordsmen and archers.... it's a simple, yet fun level, but you have 20 rounds to get through. Def. worth a purchase.

Best Lord of the Rings game

Everyone who played the Two Towers yearned for 2 player longer levels and more characters, and EA happily responded. First the graphics are pretty darn good, except the in-game characters' mouths don't move, but that's my only nitpick with the graphics. The sound is spectacular, exactly from the movies, which is pretty cool, and the voice acting is great with the actors from the trilogy lending their voices(watch "Hobbits on gaming." It's downright hilarious!). Controls are precisely lifted from The Two Towers, not that it's a bad thing. My only complaint with this is that even with 15 levels, it's a tad too short, enemies can stop your combos way too easily, game can get intense and hard, even on the easy difficulty. But they're only minor complaints. If you're a fan of the movies or books, you owe it to yourself to pick up The Return of the King. You won't be dissapointed.

Awesome, Challenging Yet Fun... A must have!

This game rocks! It is so cool! If intense battles, magicical attacks, and awesome combos are what you want, BUY THIS GAME! You can play as Gandalf, Gimli, Legolas, Aragorn, and Sam. They each have their own unique attacks and upgrades. Challenging levels where you fight off squadrons of Orcs and other enemies makes the game suspenseful yet fun. The graphics are great. With Gandalf you can power up your staff and then release its power all around you, destroying many orcs. Legolas can use arrows to swiftly take out many orcs. Aragorn and Gimli fight fiercely. Sam fights swiftly and efficiently. In short, this game is for everyone, non-LOTR fans and LOTR fans. THIS IS A GREAT GAME!!!
