I am just getting into PC games, and this is a great one. Many places to explore and interesting creatures to encounter. Definately worth buying!

Great, atmospheric, action-packed entertainment

Clive Barker's Undying is a tremendous game, albeit a terrifying one! In it you play a 'ghostbuster' type of character that investigates a family gone bizarre - that is, a family complete with vampires, demons and the un-dead. A little bit more twisted than your average Jerry Springer dysfunctional family! You investigate all sorts of strange occurrences through a seamless first person 'shooter' interface, and you have a variety of weapons and spells to choose from. The most interesting spell is the 'scrye' spell, in which you are temporarily granted a 'vision' of sorts - if you activate this spell you can see ghosts wandering around, blood writing on the walls, and pictures that somehow spring to life! It's subtle nuances like these that make Undying such an unnerving and exciting game. I loved it from start to finish - it's taxing, terrifying and really entertaining. Five stars!

Best Game No One Played in 2001, plus other awards!

Gamespot recently gave Clive Barker's Undying three Special Achievement Awards for the 2001 gaming year: Best Artistic Graphics, Best Sound, and Best Game No One Played. This game is truly an under-appreciated work of atmospheric creepiness, and it's a damn shame that it didn't sell very well.

When I played Undying in Feb 2001 (when it was released) I thought to myself that I hadn't been as terrified and jumpy since I began gaming with Thief: The Dark Project in 1999. The monsters are very ferocious from the start, especially the athletic Howlers that can leap like Carl Lewis before slashing you, bloodying your vision, throwing your perspective VIOLENTLY askew, and basically tossing you around like a bloody ragdoll in close quarter combat. What's more, you often hear the sounds of Howlers around corners, off in the distance, coming from the roof of a monastery, etc., filling you with a bone-chilling sense of dread. I had to wear a sweater when playing this game for the first time, I was getting the chills so much, I kid you not! Fans of RPG elements will appreciate the spell system that allows you to amplify whatever spells you prefer, as well as the constant improvement of your character (Patrick Galloway) as you find new spell scrolls. There are offensive spells such as Ectoplasm, Skull Storm, and Lightning. "Shield" is a defensive spell for fans of armor, and the game also features Invoke (a spell that resurrects fallen monsters who will fight on your side, my favorite), Haste (for extra speed to flee from the Howlers and other horrors), and the ever-useful Scrye (for extra-sensory perception as well as the innumerable dark corridors and corners.) In addition, Undying features an absolutely beautiful level in which you time-travel into the past to a monastery in winter. Gold-robed monks beside campfires under a night sky with snow falling around you as you seek a magical melee weapon.

I won't say that Undying is a perfect game, and the linearity and frequent load screens are obvious flaws, but I can think of no other game that so successfully combines the frenetic action of Half Life with the immersive terror of Thief. At this late date, Undying should be a bargain, so fans of dread and fear should not let this one slip away!

Great game

It is maddening that this game was such a commercial disappointment for Clive. It really is one of the best FPS games that`s ever been put together. The detail is stunning. When you kill someone (or someTHING) it falls dead on the floor and a huge puddle of blood floods out of its carcass underneath. When you walk over the corpse and through the puddle of blood you can hear your feet splashing in the puddle. Then as you are walking away, if you turn around, you can actually see a trail of bloody footprints behind you. Your own. That is just one example of the many wonderfully gruesome details that the designers of this game stuck in there. Leave it to Clive Barker to pay attention to the little nuances. The scythe is my favorite weapon. And there are numerous ways for it to kill your enemies. Almost every weapon has an alternate attack. I found this out by accident. On the scythe you can either use it to just slash enemies to ribbons, or you can cut their heads off with it and then slurp the blood up off the blade, which will replenish a few points of your life.

The graphics are pristine, and the sound has depth. As something charges up from behind you, you can actually hear it getting closer and closer as it's feet clip clop on the floor, and its animal-like howls get louder and louder. The story is captivating too. The amazon.com review said that it is a little bit convoluted, and maybe their right, but if you play the game a second time after you've beaten it, it all makes perfect sense. Just as good as any of Clive's early horror novels. The characters in this game are deep and fascinating. Just like watching a film. The ending left me a little confused, though. Obviously they were planning to put out a sequel, but that probably won't happen since the game was kind of a flop. It's just a crying shame. Buy the game, though. Play with the lights off, in the middle of the night, and when you are all alone, and you are guaranteed hours and hours of horrific enjoyment.

Clive Barker's Undying is an fps with a fantastic single player gameplay. It is a horror based fps and one of the most scary games i have ever played. Set in 1923 Ireland, you play Patrick Galloway an occult expert, he is asked by his war time buddy Jeremaiah Covent to find out the mystry of the curse which killed his family members and since Jeremaiah saved him some time ago he agrees. Gameplay is very good and has a great replay value. Patrick handles the weapons in his left hand and majic in his right, quite unique but does not affect gameplay, controls are very easy to learn. The level design is great and the art direction is perfect. The mansion look really haunted and like there were people living there one day. Levels are very scary and a lot of fun to play, the atmosphere is great and very creepy. Selection of weapons are very unique but good, best is the scythe a powerfull but close ranged weapon. Patrick knows a lot of majic spells, with the scrye spell he can hear voices and events which happened in the past at his current location and many others. Like when you look at the family picture on the wall with the scrye spell you will see what the charecters have become. Other spells are also great, skull storm fires skulls at enemies, shield protects you from damages, invoke spell brings dead enemies back to life but to help you, a spell makes you fly a short distance. Patrick writes down every event that has happened and scrolls he picked up in his book. Even though the journal entries are big, i would recommend you to read them all and also dont forget to use the scrye spell when the voice calls you, Gamers who play it without doing them will have a different experiance.

Undying is built on the unreal tournament engine but OpenGL is not here, only Direct3D and 3dFx are available, Software is here but it is unsupported. I played it on the Direct3D and it runs very smooth, load times though frequent were not long. The graphics are fantastic with lots of beautifull textures and great weather effects, the heavy rainfall and a lovely waterfall in the eternal autumn level look great and one can see the hard work that went into crafting this game. Humans look real and creatures look scary. The sound recording is great and they add up to the creepy atmosphere, it is even better than system shock 2, The sounds of water dropping when i was in the celler of the mansion fooled me that the noise was comming from my bathroom. The voice acting is also first rate and there are also lots of scary and very well done cutsences. Undying is a fantastic action game, i cannot belive the game bombed and the planned sequel was cancelled. Many gamers must have stayed away because it does not have a multiplayer, dont worry about that because it has a really great single player. Any gamer who played it would agree that it is one of the best games they have played. Undying is a must buy if you like fps.

Finally i went to the display setting in the advance option menu and set the "screen flashes" to False. The frequent loading screen did not bother me or slow down the pace of the game, The game looked realistic.

Play it with the lights off!

Clive Barker is the master of horror.

This game brings his works to the computer, and does so in a way that does his name justice.

If you play this game alone, in the dark, no lights on, you will be scared.

It is set in an incredibly detailed, beautiful, magnificent mansion in Ireland, and the landscape, architecture, theme, feel, are all stunning. They put so much effort into this game, it comes with a softcover, high-graphics book/diary, complete with bloodstains. Nice touch.

The plot line is articulate and interesting, if a bit linear. The monsters aren't smart, but they have a habit of sneaking up and scaring the life out of you. They also have a habit of moving with deceptive speed. You see them, think you have a bit of time before they get to you, and wind up with a lot less time then you thought. Time after time I've gotten swarmed. Keeps you on the edge of your seat.

The story is set a little after World War I, and has a great "old time" feel to it.

To the best of my knowledge, this is the first game that considered either a) using both hands to carry weapons and such and b) how many rounds you have chambered at a time.
Fire a couple rounds, you have to decide whether the 2 bullets left in your gun will stop the next opponent, or whether you need to reload your gun. Stop to reload, you might be at the mercy of something nasty. Attack with a gun that isn't loaded up, you might not stop it. Makes a player think.

Possibly a bit too graphic for the young or faint of heart. Lots of carnage, lots of creepy art.

The harder levels are exactly the same as the easier levels, with less health and ammo. So play on the hardest level. Why spoil it for yourself?

You'll like this one.

A great FPS game. Its in the same league as Half-Life, well actually, its in a league all its own. I thoroughly enjoyed HL, but I have to say I enjoyed this game more. The story is more 'entertaining' and the designers did a great job scarying the heck out of me.

Do yourself a favor, get this game, turn the lights out, the volume up and let yourself be entertained.

Movie-Like Single Player Game

Although this game is pretty old by now, and although I have had it for a long time, I just wanted to add my review here to pay my respect for the developers, because this game has been under-rated by customers. Perhaps because of its rating. Nevertheless, this is a wonderful game with a very very nice story, excellent characters, really pretty graphics for its time, SUPERB sound effects, and a chilling soundtrack that all comes together magically to give the player an unforgettable horror-movie like FPS experience.

I remember the times I used to play this game at home with all the lights turned off. And seriously, there were many times I jumped with horror, or times I couldn't take the fear of waiting to be killed in the dark or fear of being attacked, and shut down my PC.

The weapons, spells, enemies, enemy AI, dialogue, script, plot, whatever you need in a great FPS, this game has it.

At this price range today, if you like the genre, this is a MUST BUY.

Its 2005 and I know this game came out 5 years ago but I am still impressed not to mention a little freaked out. The graphics are just fine by any standards and the gameplay is typical first person shooter, but thats not what make this a great game its the feeling you get when youre playing it and its creepy atmosphere. The game has an erie horror feel to it that will scare you into turning on the lights even if youre an adult. I was playing this game with no lights and it was dusk outside and dim in my house. I saw a shadow come around the corner and my heart beated faster. It was my dog!!! Thats what kind of psychological effect this game has on you! It will creep up on your mind almost stressing you out with its subtle and violent horror. A skeleton rips your heart out and then eats it. Monsters can quietly come upon you and just start ripping you apart furiously if youre not careful. This is one great survival horror game that was sadly overlooked when it first came out and is worth a go to any action survival horror game fan.

Remember when you were a little tike and you thought that there was a big scary monster under the bed? Had to sleep with the lights on? Well, sleep no more as this game will DEFINATELY scare the Kacks of you. Period. Lets get to it. Well, i have never seen such a well placed control system in a game. The few that tried to mod the well wornout system failed miserably (Yes, Trespasser, i AM talking about you)but this pulls it off brilliantly. Next, the 8 (including the Gel'ziabar)weapons. Perfectly adept to the time and place (no plasma rifles and GEP guns here), and they are perfectly complimented by the 9 spells. Next is the goddamn scary atmospere. NO game i have played is as scary as this, honestly, and it's scary even with the CHEATS on! God mode and i'm still s%*ting myself. The game is held down by 2 main points. 1- NO MULTIPLAYER, the worst of the 2 blights. But, like Deus Ex (which is multiplayer now), a game of this caliber doesn't need it. And secondly, the fact that you have to close EVERY app apart from Explorer and Systray for the game to work. But it runs along smoothley on even my toss machine when it does get working. So if you need a scare (i.e the church on Monestrey Hill) and a giggle at the easter eggs (the giant sheep) go buy. Now
