Really fun game

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 145 / 152

Now, a lot of gamers wont pick up this game because they believe it to be too kiddy or childish. Granted, it is geared towards children somewhat, and isn't overtly difficult or mature. However, this is a really entertaining game with a lot to do.

You play through key points in Star Wars episodes I through III, so you get to play some of the third installment before it's even out in theatres (if you get the game before then, that is). The translation between the films to the game (LEGO style) is spot on, and you'll remember and enjoy playing through all the key events.

There's a lot of variety in this game. TONS, and I mean TONS, of extras, unlockables, characters, and different styles of play in different levels. There's even podracing! Each level just feels right and is fun to play. As you gain and unlock characters you can go back to a level and get items you couldn't reach before, because of the new character's abilities. Not only that, but there's a Free Play mode where you can just scour the level for currency and the like, or just to enjoy it again at your leisure.

Also, there's an extremely awesome co-op mode. At any time another player can jump in and start playing right along with you, either as one of the characters in the current story (in Story mode) or just about anyone in Free Play mode. This really adds to the fun factor and never gets old. I love that they included this.

Visual presentation is stellar. Everything is authentic Star Wars, yet authentic LEGO. It's really cool how well they did everything. On a technical standpoint, the game definitely isn't bleeding-edge or anything, but it isn't trying to be, and it looks really great anyway. There are some nice effects (lightsabers, explosions, floor reflections) too. Audio is PERFECT Star Wars.

All in all, this is a surprisingly fun game. With all the unlockables the replay value of this game is outstanding, and everything is a breeze to play. Not overtly kiddy, simplistic, or easy, people of all ages and tastes (even if you don't like LEGO or Star Wars) will get enjoyment out of this game. Don't be put out by its demeanor: you'll have a great time with this.

I definitely recommend LEGO Star Wars as a buy for the PS2 or Xbox. The PC version has kind of clunky controls, and the co-op isn't as good. I haven't played the GBA version. The < $40 price tag is nice as well.

Go get LEGO Star Wars!

So adorable, so fun! It's Lego + Star Wars

This game was a jewel to find. It was a blast to play. If you want a great review of the game, head on over to Gamespy (http://ps2.gamespy.com/playstation-2/lego-star-wars/599847p1.html) and check out their review. And I agree with them 100%. The game was incrediably fun to play. It is a children's game i mus say. The comedy used in cutscenes tended to be a little slapstick and there was a lack of mature humor. But i still laughed. The game utilizes its the lego half of the game very well, using the Force to manipulate lego blocks, build bridges and such. But one of the coolest parts of the game is that you can play the game with so many unlockable characters regardless of how the scene in the movie actually went. Want to have clone troopers fight in Thead or perhaps have Yoda fight Darth Maul in Episode 1? Go for it! You can unlock players with the games money system and go back to a free play mode where you can access any cleared stages and play with any unlocked characters (any!). Cool thing is that you can do more now with the unlocked characters and take advantage of their cool stuff (Like jango's jet pack) I just loved seeing who was the best to fight against Darth Maul at the end if the Ep 1 part of the game. I must say that using Amidala was a pretty nifty challenge, but Darth Maul turned out to be his own worst enemy. The game covers the first 3 movies. Though the game is short, its got a lot of replay value. And there's even a great multiplayer. It's kinda like Sonic games where player 2 could come in anytime and play as Tails. If player 2 wants to leave he can and the AI picks up after a few seconds.

I wouldn't rate this up in the Kotor quality of a Star Wars game, but then again it's Lego! It's quirky, fun and great for all ages. Just blasting a battle droid or an obstacle and watching it fall apart into Lego bricks was enough to hook me in. This game fall under one of those types that's just fun to play. I rank it up there with Katamari and R-Type final for just vast and easy fun to pick up on the spur of the moment. It is really worth taking a look at.

Initial Disc Error Problems Overcome!!

When I first got this game I would have given it a harsh review because I was having similar disc read error problems that some of the other reviewers were having. However FYI: Placing 2 pieces of scotch tape on either side of the disc's hole (like this |O|) in a vertical position usually gives blue discs the weight they need to be read by older PS2s. After learning that and playing LEGO Star Wars I can recommend it to any Star Wars fan. It's easy to pick up and play and is one of those games that is just pure fun. The game takes every opportunity to poke a little fun at a saga that can be very serious in the movies. The gameplay is intuitive and replay factor is through the roof. The only thing I would have added is more of the same. There are only a few levels for each episode and I probably would have added twice as many. This game covers only episodes 1-3 and YES their are spoilers since episode 3 is covered in the game. If you're tired of playing Battlefront and sad cause there is not a Knights of the Old Republic version for PS2, pick up Lego Star Wars, it will lighten your darkside.

Great for Kids and Parents

When my son asked for Lego Star Wars for Christmas I thought to myself great another boring kids game I'll have to play, because I've been playing video games for over 25 yrs I like challanges and usually E games don't have that.

I was so wrong this is the BEST children game ever, not only can my 3 yr old play it on his own but Adults will not be Bored having to play along!! Yes it easy for adult but there are so many hidden object to find and you have to use the force to move cups around to get extra Lego pieces, turn on light etc.. You have to do more then just run through the chapters which makes it entertaining. In episode 2 you get to do a disco with the aliens (which my son thought was so funny)and the best feature of this game is being able to jump in and play at anytime.

Usually with other games while your playing 1 person mode you have to exit and start all over from the beginning to select 2 people mode. Not with this game a second person can jump in the middle of a game (you never have to stop playing for them to join in) and when you get to a hard part (for a 3 yr old) I just tell him Drop out for second and get him past the hard part then he jumps back in and he gets so excited when we make it to the end of a chapter together. And my sons loves Free play were he can pick any player from Anakin to a droid and I enjoy it too. This is 1st kid game I ever Liked playing.

Not working on your PS2? Try this!

I, like one of the reviewers below, ran into a problem with the blue disk of this game. Older PS2 models will not always play these blue disk games...I'm not sure why, but it devasted my 4 year old son when the game Santa brought him would not work in our machine. The game worked fine on my brother-in-law's new slim PS2. I was angry and frustrated and scoured the internet for solutions....it seems many people suffered the same fate we did.

But they offered a few ideas.

1) Try turning the PS2 machine upside down. This seems weird, but when I combined this idea with #2 below, my game started working.

2) Run a DVD lens cleaner through your PS2...I used a Maxell one, but others seem to work as well for other people.

When I ran the lens cleaner through, nothing changed. But when I turned the PS2 upside down after running the cleaner through....success!

I agree with one of the earlier reviews...there should be a warning for this. But hopefully this solution will help some of you...my 4 year old literally jumped for joy when the game started working.

The game is a blast to play with your children, and even a 4 year old seems to be able to get the hang of it. Not too violent, funny cut scenes, and LEGO's....adds up to a fun and cooperative experience.

Not compatible with older PS2 models????

After having purchased this game as a birthday present for my son, we have found it does not work on our PS2 console. We are on our third game, and each had the same problem - disc read error - when we tried to load the game. I called Sony and they told me the problem was with the disc. However, the questions related to the age of my console and the COLOR of the disc. In the end they told me there was nothing that could be done. We would just have to get a FOURTH game to see if that would work. This seems exceptionally odd to me. All of our other games work perfectly fine, but then again, those games are not blue. If the product is that defective, then it should not be on the market. If it is not compatible with older consoles, then there should be a warning somewhere.

Entertaining and lots of fun

I love this game. The idea of Lego Star Wars was a cool idea and the game hasn't disappointed. Story mode is easy to go through, but there are many items you can't pick up the first time through. The game has a free play option that let's you pick any unlocked characters with their special abilities and do tasks only they can and get the canisters or studs you couldn't pick the first time around. Cool thing is that you can switch between characters in the spot, no need to exit the level.
Duration of the game depends on your interest of unlocking new characters and get mini kit vehicles, gettingt true jedi status to unlock the ultimate secret. If you only play story mode it will be very short.
I'm playing the game with my six year old son and we have enjoyed every minute of the game, it is not frustrating.
It has very cool graphics when something is detroyed you can see the lego blocks thrown all over the place.
I would definitely recommend it to any one who wants to have a good time, specially if you have kids and want to play with them a very forgiving and fun game, that is not complicated for a kid.

Fun and Pure Eye Candy!

I haven't been able to put this game down since I first popped it in! EVERYTHING about this game is fun! The graphics are WONDERFUL! The characters are fun and loveable! The game mechanics in its guts is a BLAST to play! I love collecting the new people and unlocking things like finding all of the parts of different ships so you can look at them later in the garage. The puzzles are fun and inventive! The game is for young kids to adults. Its not hard at all but is just plain fun for hours! After you finish a level etc you can go back with new characters and find new things that you couldnt get earlier. ie...Obi Wan cant jump high enough so in some levels to reach another area you need someone who can jump higher, after you beat one level with Jar Jar you can go back and use him to reach it. Nuff said! Fun and simple!

A great surprise

I bought this game for the unique new spin on 2 classics. The fun factor on this game is very high. It's just difficult enough to not be boring, but not so challenging that the younger ones can't play. I play with my daughters, and it's a great all around game. Many of the reviews here give you blow by blow details (which is appreciated), but I wrote my review to simply point out what a great game this is. I was very surprised at the level of fun and replay.... both much higher than expected.

Blue cd PS2 format at fault, not the Game.

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 8 / 10

Just a note, setting the record straight for the many people thinking the game designers or the game itself is at fault for not working in their PS2. When the underside of the cd is blue, it is using a Playstation specific format, that requires the laser inside the PS2 to run at a different angle to play properly. This is a known issue with PS2 systems, that over time the motion of the cd spinning wears down a plastic piece that holds the disc in place. Because of this, the laser cannot adjust itself to a severe enough angle to read the PS2 formated cd. There are many articles on-line that explain how to correct this behavior. simply do a web search for Playstation 2 blue disc errors. Armed with this information, a minor adjustment is made to the default angle of the laser, and once again your PS2 will play blue cd's and everything else. I have done this procedure myself, and can testify that it works, and works well.

Please do not confuse this issue and blame the wrong party for your displeasure.
