Another winner in the MOH series but still not perfect

First of all let me say, this is a great game. The Medal of Honor series has continued with the tradition of great games. This is a huge improvement over MOH:Underground.

That being said, I found a few things I'm disappointed in. I couldn't help but get a feeling of "been there, done that" while playing the game. While it was good fun, it didn't strike me a significantly different than the original. Which is not all bad as the first game was a great game. But I guess perhaps I expected something a little different this time out, rather than a "suped up" version of the original.

The enemy AI, while supposedly greatly improved, seemed pretty poor at times. Numerous times I would be standing right in front of the enemy and they just would look at me, or worse, turn around look the other way. There were a few graphical glitches that popped up from time to time. Once I walked through a wall and into a "never never land" area where I couldn't return to the game.

However the biggest single thing this game is lacking is the ability to save at any point. As you progress through the game, the levels generally get harder and longer. It was not uncommon to get killed at the end of a level and have to start the whole thing over. And after several times of completing the same scene over and over, it got very tiresome. Mid level saves would completely take care of that issue.

In summary, this is a great game. It has a few flaws, and could use a save feature. But even with these minor glitches, it will provide hours of fun. I highly recommend this game to all FPS gamers.

Medal of Honor: Frontline is a game that makes owning a PS2 very worthwhile. Even when you get killed in combat and have to restart a level, its still fun. Its got a great storyline and great gameplay to back it up. Most of the suprises are pre-scripted (similar to Half-Life), but its still amazing. I was a little dissapointed in the opening Operation Overlord landing mission. I was expecting more people on a much larger beach. Another problem with it, like any FPS on a console, is trying to aim with a analog stick. Aiming with a mouse on a computer is so much easier. An analog stick can be somewhat frustrating at times. My best advice is to keep your gun level and strafe to aim. Despite these setbacks, MOH: Frontline is another great game that makes owning a PS2 worth your money.

How much more could you ask for?

To give this game a well-deserved review, I am not just going to come out and simply say its the best. Which it is. But I'd rather do this in a dignified matter. First of all, this game is highly detailed and animated in every aspect. Either it be shootouts or being an undercover Nazi. To better explain this, the game is not even close to just being a see all, kill all. In order to advance in some levels, you have to meet up with fellow Americans and in some levels you have to make a diversion. Also, the graphics in this game are absolutely amazing. The framerate never decreases. Even if you are under heavy gunfire and missile fire. Another great thing about this game is that it rewards you for achieving a certain amount of Nazi KIA's and maintaining a certain amount of health throughout the levels. It also has a personal record of you in action. Such as how many bullets fired and so on. In order to better fit this game with a dignified matter, all I would have to suggest is playing it for yourself.
Because there's not much more that can be said about it. Except, the only problem is the lack of balance aim. It can be quite difficult to hit enemies(even at close range) with a gun. So, you'll notice that you'll become a highly-trained sniper by the end of the game. Other than that this game is right up there with GTA3 and MGS2:SOL.

Talk about a break through!!

This game has the best Omaha Beach landing mission I have ever played! The sound is so real! The A.I. is very well done.... your soldiers some times get hit by artillary and blow up! I love this game! I am already half way through and I'm still not bored with it! I hope they make a Medal Of Honor 2! Graphics are top of the line. One part of the game I was in, I had to go through this town, when I entered the town I said, "HEY! I have seen this town!" The town looked just like the one in Saving Private Ryan! I hope this helps! peace!

Terrific shooter; few letdowns

This is a first-class console shooter with gameplay elements that outstrip Red Faction and Half-Life by a wide margin. There are smart enemies, who take cover, outflank your position and take over machine gun nests when their buddies get hosed. There are dynamic environments and fully fleshed-out battlefield environments, with tanks, planes, mortar shells and such. In features it outdoes other shooters at their own game.

There are drawbacks, though - the enemies are sometimes _too_ smart. They always know where you are and when you're going to stick your head out. There are missions where you're given a silenced pistol with nowhere to use it, as cover-or-no-cover the Nazis spot you blocks away & start shooting. "Frontline" could have taken a page from "Metal Gear Solid 2" here. Another problem is typical of shooters; although the first few levels are blissfully open, eventually the game descends into "tunnel-shooter syndrome", where the only way to go is forward, through piles of enemies, until you get to the end of the tube. Surely WWII wasn't fought entirely inside of a tube, dressed up as a village, or submarine, or factory? Surely a mansion has more ways into a main dining hall than through the kitchen, through hordes of ravenous, armed waiters? We'd all be speaking German right now if Europe is one giant tube.

Also, while the controls are useful and thoughtfully placed (the lean-while-aiming dualshock feature is a gem), it could use a little tuning in the Y-axis. It's hard to keep the crosshairs at chest level sometimes.

Frontline: Virtual combat has evolved yet again

I recently purchased this highly anticipated title, and folks, I wasn't dissapointed. From all the commercials, it seems as if this game is a cut-scene filled artistic masterpiece. Add plenty of explosions, gun shots, and WWII combat, subtract cut-scene filled, and retain masterpiece, and the equation solves itself. This game is one title that will be in my collection for a long time.

The game starts out in a WWII D-day Higgins Boat, as you are one of nine soldiers in the boat approaching likely death at Omaha Beach. Included in the boat are men praying, men throwing-up, and the heroic captain who leads the squad. To the left, a German fighter flys towards you, as the boat's navigator screams, "Bandit, nine-o-clock, heads down!" Then the fighter starts firing its .50 caliber machine gun, and destroys the boat next to you in a firey explosion. The navigator screams, "30 seconds!"

Then the captain in the front turns around and gives helpful advice to his men; "10 seconds!" Once the ramp drops, an artilery burst blows everyone out of the boat and into the water. While underwater, you see men being strangled by their own weapons, men being shot in a stream of bubbles, and men who are already dead; then you rise from the water (all of this takes place within about 90 seconds).

Machine guns are blazing, the sound of bullet impact floods the air, and you've got a desperate captain yelling at you to get to his position (sounds like Saving Private Ryan, huh. Take away the blood, gore, and explicit language, and it is).

This mission is one of 19 levels in the game, ranging from all out combat, to stealth infiltration. This game is a must-have for all 1st person shooter fans. But be warned: it is a little short (15 hours). But if you overlook that, then you'll be extremely pleased.

Shooting Nazis...

When I first played the D-day beach-landing level I was quite impressed; however, as I progressed further I discovered many things, which gradually decreased my level of enjoyment. First and foremost among these would be the gawd-awful, atrocious, good-for-nothiný, just-plain-lousy controls.

Once again the Dual-Shock 2 proves how completely worthless it is for first-person-shooters. Shooting a soldier from just ten feet can be a challenge. I canýt believe they didnýt implement some sort of auto-aim feature such as in Goldeneye. Did they honestly think these controls where adequate? About the only good thing I can say about the controls is that theyýre not as bad as the first two PSX games.

EA must have decided that the controls made the game too difficult, so they were kind enough to make all the Nazis you have to fight severely mentally disabled. If the Nazis in real life had been this dumb, WWII would have ended in a week. I canýt tell you how many times I found these guys stuck running in place while a battle raged around them. This would have made the game far too easy were it not for the controls (see above) and the lack of save-points.

I think limiting saves is a cheap way of making a game challenging. I played half the game on the hard setting, and I found the challenge to be just about rightýexcept for the fact that I kept losing hours of play-time due to the lack of saves. Finally, I had to move the difficulty down a notchýwhich made the game to easyýbut it was better than having to play entire levels over again each time I died. I mean some of the levels can last over an hour; when you die right near the end, it can be somewhat aggravating. When it was announced that the PS2 would have 8 meg memory cards, I thought we would finally be through with save-points (or complete lack there of). Why can we not save anywhere, as in PC games? And if they must put save-points in a game, then they should never be further than 5 minutes apart. Playing parts over again, just to get to the point where I left off is just a waste of my time.

There is one part of MOHF which truly impressed me though. From the sound of bullets whizzing by you, to the shouts of Nazi soldiers, or the John-Williams-style orchestrated score, the sound in MOHF is truly second to none. I especially like the sound of the sniper rifle. When I first found it, I kept pulling the trigger over and over, just to hear the echoing crack, each bullet made.

Another strong point is the graphics. While they may not be technologically impressive (the frame-rate could be better, and the textures are kind of dull when you get up close to them), they do a very good job of accurately recreating WWII. Iým no history expert, but everything seems to have a very authentic look to itýthat is, except for the complete lack of blood and gore.

I think that if your going to try to accurately recreate a war, (in any medium) then it should not be censured in any way. War should be depicted as bloody and horrific as it is in real life. If theyýre worried about exposing children who might play this game to violence, then I think, showing them a censured and sanitized WWII, and then telling them itýs historically accurate would be far more detrimental. War is hell, and it should be depicted that way.

My last gripe would be the same gripe I have with almost every FPS. Itýs way too linear. Iým tired of being stuck on rails. Iým tired of every door being locked except for the one Iým supposed to go through. And Iým sick of always being stuck in a canyon every time the game is outdoors. Itýs not really fair to fault MOHF for thisýas itýs a problem that almost every FPS hasýbut I just wish there were more games like Deus Ex.

With all these complaints, you might think I hated this game, but somehow, I still found it enjoyable. Maybe itýs just the authentic WWII feel, or the excellent soundtrack, or maybe, itýs just because I love killing Nazis, but somehow, I did have fun playing this game. Itýs no Halo, but itýs still one of the better FPSýs available for PS2.

Sound: 10/10 Flawless in every way.

Graphics: 8/10 Authentic WWII look, but technologically could be better.

Controls: 3/10 Seriously needs an auto-aim feature. Dualshock 2ýs joysticks just arenýt up to the job.

Game-play: 5/10 Completely linear, terrible AI, and no saves in between levels.

Final Score: 7.5/10 Somehow, despite all the flaws, I still had quite a bit of fun. ...

nazi killing fun

this series definitely got an all-around upgrade for the ps2. the opening normandy sequence is loud, visceral, and chaotic; it also is ripped directly from that infamous spielberg ww2 movie. that's another cool thing about this game. many of the missions are modeled after some of the best ww2 war movies ever made. you've got normandy beach from "...private ryan", op market garden from "bridge too far", and even the mine car scene from "...temple of doom"(even though that's not really a war movie). if you want to play an interactive war movie, this is the game for you.

Can world war 2 get any better?

When i first played this game i knew it would be the best game i've everplayed. I turned the TV on full blast, it felt just like I was in the war. The first level, omaha beach is so awesome. When a bomb from the sky falls the dirt goes flying everywhere, it's so vivid! Then my next favorite level, Aramhem Knights reminds you of saving private ryan. (If you know what that is!) The part where there in the city. You have a Squad to lead into a fierce battle. Also the city is in shambels it's really cool! (You might want a sniper rifle to beat this level!!!)

TOP FIVE STRONG POINTS

1. The guns are acurate to the real deals.

2. The graphics are awesome!

3. The levels are realistic.

4. Sniping is the best!!!

5. The storyline is very intresting (In a good way, DUH)

This is one of the best games i've ever played.

Awesome game! GREAT Gift!

Now listen...i know that a lot of the games that were on the computers...for instance, Wolfenstine...BUT this game is the best conversion of a company from computer to PS2 or other intertainment system. The only reason I give it 5 stars instead of 5 is because of the objective levels...a lot of the levels are a bit "James Bond-ish" More like another crummy James Bond game than a war game. But also, at the same time it is very realistic. So in the end it all adds up. Almost the best graphics I've ever seen. This game, is VERY realistic. I enjoy the Battles more than the regular missions...but it's up to you. Although I will admit...at first you may require some cheat codes. Some of the special features include (and i quote from the back of the game):

Enemies and Allies Armed to the teeth with 18 Authentis WWII Weapons. Outgun Hundreds of Nazi soldiers. Fight alongside Battle-Hardened Allies.
Master OSS Training. Penetrate enemy strongholds.Outsmart Highly-Trained SS officers.

19 Deadly missions from Overlord to Market-Garden. Storm the beaches of Normandy. Seize the Nijmegen Bridge. Infiltrate a secret weapons facility. Sabotage German U-Boats. Stow away on a speeding armored train. Hijack the Nazi's Experimental Ho-IX jetplane. Defeat the Nazi war machine
