Fun, but you won't learn how to play guitar

My nephew was having a great time playing this and really loves it. Unfortunately it does not teach you at all anything about playing guitar, so there is no musical educational value to it. You do develop finger coordination from using the buttons which are like frets, which may be helpful to a player. So as long as you know that going in, you should have fun.

Love the new mechanics, bored with the new songs

I guess my comments don't add new material, but to keep it short and sweet:

I loved the new gameplay mechanics, but hated the song list.

I've played through 80% of the song list, and I'm not very motivated to move forward. I guess it's all personal taste, but I felt GH1 really hit the mark with fun songs that everyone knew - but in GH2, I only know about 1 out of every 7 songs, and they all seem to sound the same. I guess I'll play through to the end, but ironically won't be taking advantage of the great new features that I love- because why practice songs that I don't like? Not in high school band anymore. :)

My suggestion to anyone buying the game is to review the song list and see if you like that before laying out the cash.

Fun In The Beginning...

I bought GH2 a while ago, and I have to admit it was pretty fun, and addicting. But after you play it for so long it gets extremely annoying. The songs get old fast and honestly, I don't think it's worth the money. Just go find a friend that has one and play on theirs, because after a few weeks of playing possibly non-stop, you will find it in your closet along with all your "boring" things.

Tons of fun and good family time

My husband and I love this game! We both race home after work to see who gets to play first. Our 2 y/o even gets involved just holding a guitar and pretending to "rock out". This is the first video game that I've ever been better at than my husband, but he loves it just the same.
We did not play the original before this game and it's not necessary to do so. Although, I did look at the setlist for the original Guitar Hero game and I definitely think the songs are better. The songs on Guitar Hero II are ok. Some of them are classics and really fun to play, but several of them are unfamiliar to me and a couple seem to be "metal" which is just not my thing. A couple of the songs I didn't recognize turned out to be pretty catchy tunes that were fun to play. I will definitely back it up and purchase the original once we master the careers on this one.
I mostly enjoy this because it's something my family can do together. For a family with two working parents and chores, bills, and other responsibilities to tend to, it's hard to find activities that we all enjoy. We have definitely caught up on some fun bonding time since we got this game at Christmas.
Additionally, I have talked to several people since we got our game that have it as well. Everyone has completely loved it!

Gift for my brother

I got this game as a gift for my brother. He Loves it!! I tried it out a couple of times myself and while I am gaming impaired (don't know how to use a controller) I was able to do alright with the guitar and begining levels. There are so many levels and aspects to the game that quite honestly I was surprised. Just when you think you've run out of new things you win new songs or new venues to play in. To the parents it may be trying to hear the same song over and over till your player gets the score they want, but the excitement my brother (who is 25)showed made this the perfect gift. He is happily sharing with his dorm buddies, and I'm sure the life of his parties. Another note, my younger children 8 and 10 had difficulty with the distance of the buttons on the gitar although they really wanted to play, for them it was easier on practice mode so that they could actually get through the songs without failing. Perfect for teenagers and adults. Songs appeal to wide age range, while I was not familar with all of them, my brothers were, my uncle also liked them.

You only THINK you could care less......

My husband wanted to buy this game for our 11 year old son for Christmas which I thought was a bad idea. I figured it would be just like the DDR (fun for a while and then just a big controller to move around). My 15 year old son and I could not have been less interested in playing it. We ended up catching a Toys R Us special bundle just like this one (but with an additional black and white guitar controller) and I still cannot believe how terribly wrong we were. In the short time we have had this game the controllers have barely touched the floor. At first the easy mode seemed really hard and the hard mode looked absolutely impossible. It did not take long to get over that though. Now we have beat the easy and medium career modes and I am 1/2 way through the hard mode. Even if you have no musical talent whatsoever this game will make you feel like you are really playing a guitar - and playing it well! The multiplayer modes are great too. Even kids that can't get along can play this game together without fighting. Some of the songs are not our particular favorites, but all in all even the songs we don't like so much (example:Freebird) are not unbearable to play. We have already gone back and bought the first one (also a great game, but guitar II is a dramatic improvement over guitar I if for no other reason than the addition of an excellent practice mode) and we can't wait for number III. I can't imagine anyone being disappointed with this game.

Great game...song list could be better though. (4.5 stars)

This is one of the best games of all time, in my opinion. I highly recommend this to anybody who likes music, or rythm games such as the DDR series. Basically, the guitar has 5 buttons (each a different color), and notes come at you on the screen and you strum while holding down the corresponding button on the neck of the guitar. The guitar itself is pretty cool, especially the whammy bar which lets you distort the sound on longer notes. The game itself has lots of unlockables such as costumes, bonus songs, guitars, skins, etc. The graphics are also very good. My only complaint about this game is the song list. Sure, you get a few favorites like "Message in a Bottle" "Carry on my Wayward Son" and "You Really Got Me", but some of the songs just seemed like they got thrown in there, like "Institutionalized." Overall though, this game shows some great improvements over the original and is extremely addictive. Basically, if you're too lazy to buy a real guitar, or just want to have some fun, this is the game for you. Definitely worth the [...].

Have had the game for 2 months and everyone loves it! Went out and got another guitar and GH1 since. At first you may think the game is silly but once you pick up the axe and start rockin' out you are hooked.

Great fun for both individuals and family!

Our family played this together over Christmas '06 and had fun together. Now my husband and son either play it together or practice by themselves. I consider this a great purchase for those looking for a family game or a game to play alone.
