All in all..disappointing!

While the same basic thrill of the Sims games still hold true in this game, I got tired of it much faster than I anticipated.

As another reviewer pointed out, this game is lacking in so many ways. Why can't I really do something truly interesting with my Sims? What if I wanna have a household full of a bunch of teenage kids just to see what happens? What if I want to train my Sim to have a truly interesting career, like being an international spy or world renowned mountain climber? What if I want my Sim to be a space traveler, or a orchestra conductor who's diet consists soley on espresso and pixie sticks? Instead, my Sim is too busy thinking about how she would rather tell a joke to the kid down the street, or buying some $6,000 piece of junk that will raise the room score by 2 points. I just think that the whole point of the game got lost somewhere along the way here and been replaced with the same old tired cliché moves that were present in the Sims 1 with better graphics, probably due to how largely commercial the Sims has become. This game is so restrictive, unless your Sim leads a fairly mundane existence, they won't be able to do anything interesting at all. It is suppose to give you the ability to simulate real people, real interactions, with a cute twist. Instead, you will find yourself just pushing the same old things to fulfill their various quotas. Kiss husband, tell husband joke, give husband backrub, clean counter top, watch TV, paint picture....it all gets fairly boring pretty fast. Also, I found that many of the different room patterns and designs do not match each other, making the home design process less fun than it once was. Also, I know many people think that now that your Sims are "mortal" in the sense that they don't just live forever, I found this to be trying, simply because if you choose for your Sim to have kids, you will spend most of their days tending to their children. By the time the kids are old enough to move out, unless you forced you Sim to "platinum mood" about 30 million times and made him/her guzzle youth elixir like water, your Sim will be 1 foot in the grave before you can even do something you want with them.

Also, something I have found truly disappointing is the Sims2 official website. Those who have played the Sims 1 (and were hardcore about it) remember that this page always had *TONS* of cool downloadable things for the game, everything from items they could interact with, to actual Sims. They even came out with a tool that you could use to take an actual picture you had on your computer of someone's face, and mold it onto the face of a Sim in your game. They had weekly contests, daily scenario and household postings. This time they have none of the above. NONE. The only thing you will find is about 5 items, all of which are useless. I guess they are saving all this for various expansion packs. Whatever. Still, its disappointing to know that you are stuck with the same items unless you pony up another 30 or 40 big ones for some more.

So in closing, yes the graphics are great. Yes, you still get to simulate day to day life with the Sims in very much the same way as the first one. Yes, your Sims now have a limited time to fulfill all of their goals before they die. But for those of you (including myself) who were expecting a game that truly stretched your imagination and lets you create a Sim who will do anything more spectacular than garden or "woohoo" in the hot tub with the neighbor, keep looking. I think I'm going to uninstall this game and reinstall the Sims 1.

Always playing it!

My daughter is 12 and plays this game every chance she gets. She has added expansion packs to make it even more fun! Getting her off the computer is quite a challenge!!

OMG! This is my favorite game!

Hi. I'm 12 years old. I've had this game for about a year. It's so cool! This game is much better than the original. The best part is there are more age groups and they don't stay the same age all the time. Buy this game! It will keep you entertained for hours!

A Great Game Made Even Better

I've been playing sim games since the early 1980s, starting with Utopia for Intellivision. Each game has taught me something. Each one helps us understand what the scholar Peter Senge described as "systems thinking." Through sim play, I've deepened my understanding of economics, business, city a regional development...the list goes on.

Now comes the re-release of The Sims, the most popular sim game of them all. I was delighted with its emphasis on individality and creativity.

However, like with the Sims 1, this game teaches us systems and more. In the Sims, the key message was balance. The Sims cannot achieve maximum levels of "win" without an appropriate balance of work, leisure, physical and mental needs...

Sims 2 helps us personalize this even more - something I would not have thought possible. But the essential message remains: balance is key for the "win."

What will we see for an encore??

This Is The Best Game... But Unbearably Too Slow And Choppy

I loved The Sims and all of the expansion packs until I realized that the Sims 2 came out and you can do all these new things like be a teenager and adult and an old sim and they age and all that. The game is great, and it is probably the best computer game out there...

...Until you load up the game. To start up the game got faster, but the game is way too slow and choppy. I got a Windows XP and I just got it and the game is choppy. I got Techinal Support help and they told me to do these things, but the game was still slow. if you have an XP and have overall a lot of patience, you MAYBE can handle this game. If you ahve anything lower then Windows XP, then you can forget about it. The game has a lot of stuff, but you can't play with the stuff unless you either can deal with waiting 5 minutes just to get into your house from the start screen.

The game though is amazing. You can select your clothes instead of the old Sims. This game blows the old one away, but it is unbearably slow. My opinion is if you can deal with the slow stuff, you will love it. If you hate choppy games and can't stand loading times, then don't waste $50 dollars.

Pros:
- You can do almost anything you ever wanted to do in your old Sims game, probably ever more then you dreamed of.
- You have these little aspiration meters and what you want to do in your life. Do you want to be the smart one, the greedy one or the family guy?
- Tons of new options on every item in the game and much more building options, like more then two levels in your house, unlike the basic 2 in the old sims.
- Be an toddler, child, teenager, adult or an elder and watch your Sims age, be born and eventually die.

Cons:
- Slow and choppy gameplay and extremely slow loading time take away a lot of fun of the game.
- The graphics are not like the old Sims, and the objects look very pixalated and cartoonish.

Overall, this game would be a legend if a computer can handle it's size and if they made it a littler like the old Sims instead of tweaking everything.

I have to be honest by saying I am far over the age of 13 and I am a devoted SIM fan. I am looking forward to the SIMS2 and all the fun you could have with it. Yes, I have a life! However, Whenever I am not working, have time to kill or just bored, I enjoy creating happiness in their lives or just destructing them. Especially If you have a bad day at work, you can come home and take it out on your SIMS! As far as the comments that people have made regarding "bugs", I have the original game plus 3 expansion packs and have had no problems. (witch is why I rated this with 5 stars) I believe the reason Maxis is taking so long is because they are working out all the kinks. So I say, take your time maxis! For those of you that have never tried any of these games, I strongly recommend that you try this! You will be amazed!

Also, Can someone please tell me the release date? I keep hearing March 15, 2004 and/or Feb 4, 2004. Happy Creations!!

Best game I have EVER played!!!!

This is such an awesome game! It is pretty much just like real life. I got it 4 months ago and I play it every day! You can make your own families, build their own houses and really control their lives! Some of the best additions are genetics, generations, the great graphics, and the realisticness. You can make people look just like people you know in real life. The only bad thing about that is you can only make up to 8 people in one household. But other than that, this game is really awesome! There are so many surprises in this game. Especially when playing the characters in the Maxis created neighborhoods. There are a few glitches that I've found though, like that a dead sim will call their friend asking to sneak out, and when the person shows up to pick them up they're invisible. But other than that there are a lot of options. I only have this game with out the expansion packs, I bet with expansion packs this game is even more amazing! Making houses is so much fun and really easy once you get the hang of it. There are lots of options to choose from, and you can make over 2 story homes, unlike in the first sims game!
You feel like you're really attached to your sim characters. Well at least I feel like that. You can choose their personalities. A lot of things are SOOO hilarious that happen in this game, like the interactions, the way they talk, and more! Its also really easy to navigate around everywhere.
This game is REALLY worth buying. I've fallen in love with it and I'm sure you will too!

AMAZING GAME... SOMETIMES

This game is like a computer version of the board game Life, except so much more complex. I would sit and play it for hours and hours and hours, never even wanting to get off. It is fun and the graphics are AMAZING! I would suggest buying (in addition to the game) the Sims 2 Official Game Guide because it has really easy to understand instructions and even some money cheats.
Okay, so you start out creating a family (and let me just say that your options for clothes and makeup and hair are so much more complex than in Sims 1). You can have up to eight people in a family. There are only five different ages: toddler, child, teenager, adult and senior. But once you move into your house and you can start having babies, which turn into toddlers. When you are creating your family, you get their evryday clothes, formal clothes, undies, pajamas, workout clothes (only for teens-elders) and bathing suits. As I said before, the choices are amazing for clothes. You also choose what their hair looks like, makeup and everything. There are three neighborhoods that the product company has made for you: Pleasantville, Strangetown and another town that I forgot the name of. There are also pre-built houses but with only plumbing and no furniture. You can build a house for your family and you have no price limit. But if you build a house from ground up when people are living there, you're going to have a price limit. There is a lot of choices for furniture, too. It is easy to build a house with walls and easy to put flooring in and paint up. I just let my imagination go wild. You can build up to eight floors in your house but I suggest you have big floors to have room for your next staircase. You can even make your roofs different colors! (Though not bright colors like green and orange and yellow.) There are a lot of choices of different rooms: workout rooms, living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, dining rooms, etc. You can also categorize furniture by two "sections": different kinds of furniture like all of the different chairs or all of the different couches, etc. Or you can categorize it by rooms for example, all the dining room furniture, all the kitchen furniture and so on. This process is pretty simple and it is REALLY easy to find good furniture to fit yours sims "style."
Something that I forgot to mention above is that at the end of dressing your sim and doing their hair and stuff, you choose their aspiration. It can be money, buisness, romance, family or popularity. Their aspiration will depict on what their wants and fears are. So if you have a family sim one of their wants might be having a new baby or if you have a romance sim, a fear of theirs may be being turned down for a flirt.
Next you move your family in. They will try to adapt to their new home by looking around and "judging" everything. The first thing I suggest you to do is get all of the teenagers, adults and elders a job. These are the people that will bring home the money each day, so do this quickly. Also establish who is going to be the cook in the family. Have them make most of the meals so that they will get more experience and will be faster at cooking than others.
I hope I gave you an inside look at Sims 2. This is just the beginning. Have fun!

The BEST of The Best

I love this game. Everything about this game is wonderful.
Unlike the original Sims, where they get pregnant and a bassinet appears.
The Sims can try to get pregnant....have morning sickness and
deliever the baby ( and sometimes they deliever twins) all while you either snap pics or record the event.
You can even hire a nanny to help out, the teens can have a job in this one. The kids have their choice of private school or public school. In order to get into private school you have to invite the headmaster of for dinner....
This game offers so much more...
THIS IS MUST HAVE.

Much, much better than the original

I bought the Sims 2 Deluxe version in July and after almost three months of consistent gameplay, I'm ready to review.

I had the original Sims and it was a blast. I loved being able to control what my little people did, how they interacted with each other and little things like whether or not they went to work that day or when they went to the bathroom. The Sims 2 gives you all of that plus more - now not only can you control your little Sims, you can marry them off to Townies or NPCS, move them in and play them as well. Your Sims are much more lifelike than before - little details like they now have five seperate fingers and if they get engaged they will wear a diamond engagement ring. When they marry, it turns into a gold wedding band. If a spouse dies, the living Sim still wears his/her wedding band as an actual widow would. Sims can now get pregnant and have babies, which is a wonderful, fun addition to the game. The babies grow up very quickly - they are newborns for a couple of Sim days, then toddlers for three Sim days, then they become children. Toddlers are a bit of work if you enjoy playing large families - unlike newborns, which can lay in their crib for hours on end, toddlers have to be potty trained, taught to walk and talk, played with, cuddled, fed, bathed and put to bed. They also have aspirations that you will have to fulfill if you want your toddler to grow up well into a happy child (more on aspirations later in the review). Not a problem if you have a small Sim family but it can get a little difficult if you have more than 3 or 4 Sims living in one house.

Other new additions: teenage Sims get acne and if you have a mirror, you get the option to apply acne cream. They can also go steady with another teenage Sim but be warned that if your Sim falls in love with a Maxis teen Sim, once your Sim becomes an adult the romantic relationship is gone immediately. They will simply become best friends. Sims now have more bodily functions - they burp and pass gas (hehe). They have distinguishable facial expressions (sad, happy, angry) and can gain weight if you have them eating pizza all the time. Probably the coolest new feature is that the Sims can now die - they can either be killed in an untimely and tragic way or they can die of old age. Once your Sim dies, you can place their tombstone in the backyard to start a family graveyard if you wish (to turn the urn into a tombstone just move it outside and it will automatically turn into the tombstone) but if you do that you'll probably get ghosts. Yes, that's right, dead Sims come back as ghosts.

You now have aspirations and lifetime goals or wants - to keep your Sim happy and content, fulfill his/hers daily wants and avoid the fears. The Sims have a little meter on the control panel that shows what their aspiration level is - so if you are fulfilling alot of their daily wants, you get so many aspiration points and the meter goes up or down to reflect that. If it's in the green your Sim is reasonably happy. If it's gold your Sim is content. If it's platinum, your Sim is absolutely estatic and will do pretty much anything you tell him to (sometimes the Sims will run instead of walk when they are very happy). The little plumbbob that hangs over the controlled Sims head will also turn platinum once you reach that status. If your Sims have a high aspiration level when they transition into the next age - child, teen, adult or elder - they will be happier and find success much more easily. If your Sim has a high aspiration level when he/she transitions to an elder, they live longer.

You must have alot of RAM and a good video card to run this game. MUST. In my opinion this is the game's only downside. My computer is practically brand new (got it in June) and runs the game almost flawlessly. If you have an older PC you may find that your times to load a community lot or a family lot is longer, your gameplay may be choppy or the game may crash alot. So as others have said, it is better to have a PC that surpasses the minimum requirements listed on the game. Luckily you can buy more RAM and a new video card - they aren't too expensive.

If you are considering buying the Sims 2, I highly recommend the Deluxe version. It's only about $10 more than the base game by itself and you get the Nightlife expansion, which adds soooo much to the game (like cars!). I really enjoyed the original Sims but the Sims 2 kicks butt!
