A grade-A beat-em up, and an A+, if you're a fan of the show

Buffy's a great game, whether you're a fan of the series, or not. Sure, it's more compelling to people who've seen the series, as most of the voices in the game are done by the actual actors from the series (SMG being the sole exception, but her replacement is flawless). The game also manages to capture the feel of the show perfectly, from the snappy dialogue, to the creepy environments and atmosphere.

Honestly, though, all that would be useless without solid gameplay to back it up. Fortunately, Buffy has it in spades. While there is some minor switch-finding involved in some of the levels, the lion's share of gameplay in Buffy involves slaying things, whether they're vampires, zombies, or other random monstrosities. The control in Buffy is fantastically responsive, and great, even for multi-enemy hand-to-hand combat - something most games are horrible at.

The controls are similar to the old Soul Reaver games, where the R-trigger locks on to an enemy. You can jump, kick, punch, or stake your enemies, or execute a variety of moves on them, which will often lead to nifty combo moves. If you let go of the R-trigger, there are moves that will hit people in virtually any direction around you, as well as special moves that'll clear everyone around you for a few moments.

There's a good variety of weapons, from stakes, to crossbows, to hellfire-filled Super Soakers. Each feels right, and the ability to stake vampires from a distance with the crossbow is really well-implemented.

The game's graphics are phenomenal. Neat lighting effects, wide open levels, and beautiful character models abound, but easily the most interesting feature, in my opinion, is the facial animation. The Collective (the game's developers) clearly put a lot of effort into giving Buffy & Co. a wide variety of facial expressions, and lip-synched animation to match their dialogue. The results are astonishing, and seeing Buffy grimace while staking an enemy, or giving a casual shrug when wondering why her Friday nights are spent slaughtering demons adds another level of immersion to an already fantastic game.

It's the best single-player beat-em up I've played in a good long while. The controls are fantastic, the graphics are beautiful, and it's a sharply written and presented game. Excellent stuff, I'd recommend it to both fans of the show, and people who've never heard of it before alike.

This game was worth the wait. I bought it yesterday. The graphics are AMAZING. Not to mention the sound, lighting, music, and voices. This game doesn't get boring. So much detail. How all games should be.

Forget for a moment its 2 years behind schedule...forget its an adaptation of a WB TV series. THIS GAME ROCKS! The graphics are top notch...the storyline draws in even the most non-Buffy fan.

Take the time to learn the special moves...it makes a world of difference.

Coolest game ever.

I love the show, and this game really does it justice. Even to the corny one liners!

Even though it's pretty hard to beat (especially with that snake vampire) I recommend it to Buffy fans, action fans, supernatural fans and butt kicking fans.

I just bought an XBOX on Sunday because I was dying to play this game. It was definentley worth it! The graphics are so amazing and everybody looks good, except Willow, I do not know what they were thinking. The levels are a bit shorter than the second game, but some are harder, especially the Maze level! CONFUSING! Everyone does their voices except for Buffy, but Giselle Loren sounds almost exactly like her. Much more than the second game. The levels are very fun. I love the High school ones.

Some good things about this game compared to the second game:
* You get an inventory screen.
* you get to carry weapons along each level.
* you can boost your power.
* this game has a lot of cool cheats you can use
* the graphics, except for Will
* Save points!
* One more level than the second game.

WAYS THAT PART 2 IS BETTER:
* Multiplay arena
* Willow looks better, even though she isn't voiced by Alyson Hannigan.
* EXTRAS!
* The control functions
* Longer levels with more puzzles.

But I think that people shouldn't compare the games (even though I did) because the games should stand on their own, and by theirselves they are both very good!

Lastly, the game was VERY good! It took me only 3 days to beat. That's my only little complaint, the game is a little too short. I would have liked if Oz was in this game. The next Buffy game should take place in season 7! and they should bring Dawn in as a playable character! She's got some slayer skills.

Ratings: on a scale of 1-10: 12.

This game was the reason I purchased an xbox six months ago over the playstation 2. And from what I've seen so far it looks like I made the right decision! Every screen shot and every demo I've seen have looked absolutely beautiful! I am a huge fan of the show first and foremost and it pleases me to know end to know that the game will follow the TV show as close as it is. War the buffy nation, I'm OUT!

For all those morons who can't wait to rip every game apart -- I will admit that the water effects could be more DOA3, there are a couple 1/2 second glitches here and there, and some of the cut scenes cut off rather abruptly. Some of the sound bites can also get a bit repetitive.
But...other than that, this game totally rocks. Way more action than Hunter the Reckoning, which I found boring. If you watch and love the TV show like I do, there's no reason why you wouldn't love this game. The fighting moves are going to take me some time to perfect, but I can get by with the usual pushing-all-the-buttons-like-crazy for now.
The staking effects are way cool. The camera also isn't too bad once you get used to the left trigger control.
Go buy this game. You won't regret it.

This is a number one game!!!!! if you are a fan of the show, you will see that it is just like an episode and with the soundtrack, voices, and levels and hidden secrets it will keep anyone busy for hours even if you are not a fan!. i also know that there is a buffy two coming out in the summer 2003....which looks even better!!!
