I feel like a party pooper here, with all the great reviews being wrote, but I need to add my opinion to help others who may have a similar taste in fighting games i have.

First off, I have never been a 'major' mortal kombat fan, I however have felt it to be one of the best series out there. The characters have always been intresting and entertaining and the gameplay has always been upbeat, fast, and bloody. This game has all 3 of those. Fast gameplay, very bloody, and always seeming to say 'go go go go' Each battle seems to take only seconds sometimes, as combos and massive beat downs are recieved and given back.

But here is my complaint in what flaw I see... this is no DOA 3. Some may say "YES!" but for those like me, I loved DOA realistic martial arts, and fluid animation. Some moves were so realistic and to the art, I recongized them from movies and my own limited martial arts training. From the rythmatic stance of Jeet Kune Do to the blocks and solid punches of Karate. Mortal Kombat lacks this, and to a hurting. Johny Cage is such a slug he is an embrassment to both styles he uses in the game. *jeet kune do and karate i think, plus chucks as weapons* Before those of you that are die hards say "Well you just don't know how to string combos together!" I reply, that is fairly true, I am not the best at remembering things like Y Y Y X up + X Left trigger A A... All fights began to look like they all came out of the same can.. as the same combos are repeated over and over for if you use anything else, you may only get 3 hits before you character decides to take a breather. I lack the words to explain exactly how I feel about the animation, not because its "that bad!" but because I honestly dont know how to describe it. When some characters jump, they float up, pause, then float back down. Some flying punches or kicks look like they cut back on animation time by having the whole body hold still other than the arms or feet that are hitting. This leads to less fun for me, because I want to watch realistic and enjoyable fictional fight moves. If someone throws a punch, and they dont even move a shoulder, or waist, or hip, it begins to look dull. All I suggest is rent it first, to see if you have similar view as me. For those who are fans of the arcade, then I dont think you will mind the game at all. Dead or Alive 3 however I feel has much much more fluid animation and realistic styles. The things the mortal kombat characters often look hoky and fake. *not bashing fire balls and the like, speaking only of punches and kicks*

Hope this helps with your purchase or rental.

I'm so addicted to this game...but frustrated

I rented this game and a few days later bought it. This is nearly a perfect Mortal Kombat game. I had lost interest in MK after it's many sequels and same ol, same ol. A new fighting system, weaponry and multiple fighting styles make this not only a challenge to master but a lot of fun as well. Plenty of Gore and Blood and plenty of moves where you have no choice but to say "that HAD to hurt". You have to love impaling your opponent.
Graphics and sound are top notch and the added Konquest mode and the Krypt add a new level to this game the previous titles didn't have.Konquest mode to unlock Blaze and Mokap can be cruelly frustrating, just TRY and do Raiden's Chain Lightning Branch Style Combo, i've been at it for two days now. They couldn't have made Konquest mode just a "tad" easier. certain characters in Konquest mode are far easier than others.Sometimes i could swear there's a glitch where you do the combo right but the game insists you didn't, and as other times you do it by mashing buttons as fast as you can and it decides to let you have it. The old favorites are back with some great new characters as well. It's a interesting concept mixing a fighting game with Kurrency to unlock hidden characters, arenas and alternate costumes to name a few. I've been playing it non stop since i got it. The only problems i can find with this game are the "cheese" factor of Moloch and certain moves or combinations of moves that a human player wouldn't be able to pull off, but the AI pulls off flawlessly, like blocking and attacking at the same time as well as perfectly timed reversals into a 15 hit Branch Style Combo that goes through all three fighting styles LOL.The rounded directional pad makes some of the moves harder to pull off than on say a playstation controller and that can get annoying at times, hitting down back to perform a "special move" only to jump in the air unintentionaly. The range of difficulty should have been spread out a little more as well, you go from your first fighting being a flawless victory in every round,to your third and fourth giving you a seriously AI sided fight.Staring at the screen going what the heck happened, i guess i blinked. I would have liked to have seen more than ONE fatality per character and maybe even a few arena fatalities as well. Some of the Branch Style Kombos seem next to impossible to pull off and having to do them to beat Konquest mode to unlock even more characters is frustrating, although die hard MK fans wll surely have no problems LOL. It's a great game and i can't wait to see the sequel. Plenty of morbid entertainment for your dollars. From what i've herd and seen the Xbox version is the BEST version of this game on a console. If you have an Xbox definetly pick this up or rent it. One final thing, Midway would have been smart to make this game Xbox LIVE compatible so you could play with other people online in VS mode, that would have been most excellent.

not too impressed with this game.

Visually Mortal Kombat: DA is one of the best looking fighting games I have seen on any console, only falling in a close second behind Dead of Alive 3 on the XBOX. The only thing I did not like about the graphics are some of the characters. They are WAY WAY out of proportion and look very unrealistic, This is very noticable in the women characters.

One good thing is this game is that the menus in the game are spectacular; the game starts in a hallway and depending on what game mode you choose the screen pans as you are walking down the hall into different rooms.

The sound in the game is pretty good but nothing spectacular. Here is where the game starts to go downhill.

First of all Midway has changed the fighting system which is a good idea, but it needs alot more work. Each character has 3 different fighting styles you can choose from during the match. Each fighting style has different moves and different button combinations. The first two fighting styles are basically two forms of martial art and the last fighting style is your character with a weapon. While this is a good idea it makes the game very cumbersome, I am sure it would take some getting used to, so this may not bother you. However one thing I really did not like is the actual game play and feel of the game. To me the characters seem slow to respond to your commands and in the meantime get pummeled by his/her opponent. Even after you perform the correct button combinations for a special move, your character seems to wait a split second to actually do the move, which can get very frustrating; especially against an opponent who only does the same "cheese" move for the entire match.

The same holds true for the "monster"(ie, GORO, MOTARO) opponent near the end of the game. He has this move in which he sucks you towards his mouth and hits you while you're in the air. This brings me to another point, MK:DA seems to have move cheap moves resulting in cheesy wins; especially with the weapon. I never did enjoy the weapons aspect even when it was in MK4, and I feel that they need to be removed.

Another disappointing thing is that each character now only has one fatality, which gets old pretty fast. You would think on a powerful system like the XBOX, Midway would have been able to get in at least 3 fatalities per character, but instead they settled with one.

Finally, one thing I did not enjoy about the game is having to unlock most of the characters. You start of with 12 some totally new and some old ones that we know. But you can get the others by gaining various coins and going down to the crypt to "buy" them. Basically for every computer player you beat during story mode you get X amount of coins. Those coins add up and you can then go into the games "crypt" and open one of the 676 various coffins for a various amount of money. The catch is you have no idea what is in the coffin until you actually open it. Most of the coffins contain artwork, other coins, and some are even empty. There are about 20 or so coffins that contain new boards and characters but they are very expensive. For example to get Raiden, you need 3300 gold coins! Let me put this in perspective; if you beat the game with a character you may only get at most 150 gold coins. Most coins you get are ruby and graphite coins, which are not that valuable. Needless to say you will be playing for a long time just to get one new character. This is not necessarily a bad thing, if you don't mind playing the game over and over again but for me, I would rather have all characters available or at least not so expensive to get.

Aside from the character situation I found this game to be quite boring. To me it seemed rushed in my opinion, it has so many aspects to be the best fighting game on XBOX, but it has fallen short. I was expecting at least 3 fatalities per character, but there is only one. Also the fact that you have to "buy" new characters is kind of disappointing. Even if there were a code to get the characters I probably still would not buy the game because it gets boring so fast.

This game is not for everyone and my suggestion is the rent this game before you buy it. Which is what I did.

This is the most incredible fighting game I have ever played! The graphics are awesome, the gameplay is fantastic, and the fatalities are great! Virtually all of the original MK characters are in this version and they have awesome combinations in addition to old moves. The different fighting styles are awesome. It is very easy and quick to switch to a different fighting style. The environments on this game are incredible. There is also a great storyline to this game. There are many different challenges and tons of variations to gameplay. DOA 3 does not even compare to this game graphically or gameplay wise. This is the best fighting game you will ever play.

A great game - for a few days.

I loved this game! This is the first Mortal Combat game I bought, and only the third addition to my XBox collection. Instantly playable out of the box, the graphics are amazing, and the sound makes this a thriller. There is nothing bad to be said about any feature in this game. It is extremely addictive and you can spend hours on end without realizing it. Alas, this last point is what caused me to give this 4 instead of 5 stars. It quickly became boring.
Although there are features - such as the Crypt, for which you earn point ("currency") during game play and in which you can purchase a "coffin-full" of additions to the game, including extra fighters or suits for current fighters - that try to extend the playability of the game, the presence of only one fatality per player quickly becomes irritating.
Overall, this is a great game, but don't let its addictiveness kill it. Don't spend too much time on it everyday, or else you will wear it out too early.

This is the best game in the series.

This MK game is the better than all the rest for several reasons. The first is because there are three different fighting styles for each character. Every character in the game with the exception of Blaze and Mokap, have their own fighting style. This is defenantly a step up from any other MK game and this is what will give it more gameplay appeal for probably a long time. There are literally more fighting styles in this game than any other fighting game I believe and most of the styles are real martial arts. I believe that there are about 63 fighting styles in the game that includes hand to hand and weapons combat. Second, this is the first truly 3D MK game that makes full use of the 3D environment. Sidesteps are even easy to pull off. Third, the control is excellent. Fourth, there are lots of things to get in the krypt which cost coins. You play the game for coins so you are actually playing for a purpose. The only negative thing I have about the game is that there should be more modes in the game. The only thing to play is arcade, versus, and konquest and once you have beat konquest with every character you would probably not want to play that again. There needs to be a team battle and survival mode to add to the game play. Other than that, everything else is great.

Awesome Game!!

I have always been a big Mortal Combat fan right from the beginning. This new version did not let me down at all. There's so much to do in this new version. You get to train with different characters and learn their moves. Once you do so, you earn Koins that will allow you to open up 'Koffins'. Hidden in the koffins are new characters, backgrounds and some silly stuff. The movement and graphics are amazing. If you're a Mortal Combat fan, you will not be disappointed with this game.

Average Arcade Fighter

Mortal Kombat- Deadly Alliance
Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance is the fifth installment in the main Mortal Kombat series. This would be the first game to appear on the PS2, X-Box, and Gamecube so they needed a bang to ensure the continued success of the series. The game is made as if it was an arcade game, but has so many extras it will blow your mind. I want to say there are over 800 extras to unlock. Still, the game doesn't impress me enough to give it anything but a little above average.

Graphics- 8/10
This was the first Generation of Mortal Kombat to be on the new line of video game systems. Graphics had to be top notch if they wanted to make a good impression. They did deliver on graphics for the most part. All characters in the game look very good and are nicely designed. Each character has three different facial characteristics that change as you are brutalized during a fight. All of this looks exceptionally well done.

Arenas are all well designed. They all have similar boundaries and sizes, but overall they are nice looking. Some levels have traps set up; this is a new feature to the Mortal Kombat series. There are statues that spit acid, or ice sickles that get in your way of battle. These usually don't have any major effect on battles, but are better than a flat landscape.

Blood has always been a huge factor in Mortal Kombat. Often times this was the only thing that made Mortal Kombat different than other fighting systems. This game however features way too much blood. It flows like a fountain as you hit your opponent. It is far too unrealistic since the only visible place that the characters have cuts on is their face. The blood is too thick and almost looks cartoony.

Story- 5/10
Liu Kang, the winner of the original Mortal Kombat and Earth's best fighter, has been killed. Shang Tsung and Quan Chi have teamed up and overthrown Shao Kahn, leader of Outworld. After this they quickly assaulted Liu Kang and violently killed him. They have discovered an undead army and are taking souls rise the army. Raiden has established a team of warriors to stop this evil plot. This is all explained in an opening sequence.

Honestly, this games story doesn't even matter. The game is an arcade fighter and it just doesn't matter. Once you beat Arcade mode with a character, you will get an ending for them. For the most part, this is a fairly lack luster reward for beating the game.

Sound- 7/10
The character's grunts and yells all sound fairly well. It is just what you would expect from an arcade fighting game. The music is a low tone background sound. The music never really adds to the gameplay like it should. Also, the music is fairly repetitious.

There is however a added music video on the game by Adema. The song is called "Immortal" and was designed especially for this game. If you like Metal then you are going to love this song. If you don't then odds are you are going to not care for this song. I wish the song were implemented into the actual gameplay of the game and not just as a bonus.

Gameplay- 6/10
The game is designed almost exactly like the previous titles. You pick a fighter, and then you fight a bunch of random fights until you reach the boss. The difficulty steadily climbs as you defeat opponents. Overall this is a poor gameplay mode and any fun from it wears off quickly.

They have added a Konquest Mode, which is basically just a tutorial mode. This is nice for anyone that doesn't know how to button mash. You can learn the special moves of the characters and some good combos. It's not really fun to play through and only serves as a tutorial on how to do moves.

One thing they did right in this game is adding a surplus of extras. As you play through arcade mode you will earns Koins, which you can use to purchase extras from the Crypt. You do not get to choose what extra it is, it is all concealed from you until you purchase something. The more expensive ones are usually things like characters and arenas. Cheaper ones are usually concept art or concept videos. Some of these are nice and some are just plain filler. Overall it makes you want to play through the game to at least to get the more expensive extras.

Gameplay itself is broken up by mini-games every three fights you do. One mini-game consists of you watching cups shift around and you try to guess the one that the Mortal Kombat symbol was under. Another has you button mashing to try to raise a bar so you can break something. These are both fairly fun and help break up the tedious gameplay.

At the end of the day this is just a fighting game. The engine itself isn't exactly the quality of Soul Calibur. The characters moves aren't fluid enough and are often robotic. All the characters have three different fighting styles, which helps change up the gameplay. Still, the game is just a average fighter and you won't play it for more than a few hours before becoming bored.

Difficulty- 10/10 (Note- This is how much I like the difficulty)
The games progression of difficulty is pretty well done. If the game is too easy for you, you can always choose a higher difficulty. If it is too hard, you can choose an easier difficulty. As you play arcade mode, the game will get harder and harder as you beat more people. If you lose enough though, the game will get easier.

Even the mini-games have progression. If you lose one, you will get an easier version next time. If you win the mini-game you will get a harder version. This is all a very nice touch. Anyone can play through the game with whatever type of difficulty suits him or her.

Overall- 6/10
Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance is just not that impressive of a game. The simply arcade type gameplay just is not fun in this day and age. Even the insane extras cannot save this one. The fifth game in this series is just too much of the same old stuff we've been playing for years. Now you have much better graphics, but at the end of the day that doesn't make any difference to a real gamer.

If you are looking for a strong fighting game, then just keep on looking. Combat is robotic and just not fun. The gore is fairly bad. The arenas, despite looking different, all have the same layout as far as spacing goes. The story is not important at all. With a game with very little story and bad gameplay, you are basically left with nothing good in a game at all.

I cannot recommend this game for anyone. There are too many fighting games that are much better. If you have to buy this game, I will say that the difficulty progression is very well done. Unless you are a truly horrible gamer though, this won't affect you though. I would suggest checking out Soul Calibur, Tekken, or Virtua Fighter before even considering this game.

Mortal flaws in the gameplay.

Nice graphics and action packed! Too bad they messed it up with a stupid combo system... In order to unlock all characters, you have to complete 'Konquest' mode - this means you will have to do combo's etc. But some of the 3-style combo attacks are nearly impossible to pull off. I've been playing beat'em ups from day one and I found myself struggling with Raiden's combo for half an hour!! Honestly, I felt like performing a fatality on the disc.

The gameplay is also very tedious. If -for once- you opponent DOESN'T block your attacks, you would be stupid not to use your best combo. So you find yourself performing the same tricks over and over again. The game also gets ridiculously hard after a number of consecutive wins, even on medium mode.

First of all, MK: Deadly alliance is a good game. I have had the chance to play this amazing game at an October tradeshow in Dallas, and believe me, this is much better than MK 4. The graphics are really smooth, and there is no slowdown what so ever. And this time around, the characters actually move in a 3D world, and there are more than 5 different styles of fighting! There are roughly 22 characters, some being old favorite, and some being new. Depending on how you execute the moves, you can fight different styles in just one battle!

Speaking of executions, the fatalities are back, and they are awesome! The other -alities didnýt make it to this game, which is good thing, those -alities were getting old, and itýs nice to see the makers heading to a new direction! One thing that old MK fans might like is the some of the combo's. You can actually do an uppercut, keep the guy in the air and using air attacks, you can kill him in the air (I havenýt done it, but one of the demonstrator executed those moves perfectly)! That whole thing will count as a combo! Itýs a cheap little trick if you are playing against tough computers.

In the end, MK: DA will entertain you for hours, but it can get pretty boring after you master the game. If you liked MK: II, then you will love this. However this is an arcade game, so rather than being good with one character in the traditional 3d fighter (Virtua Fighter 4), you can easily master 4 or 5 characters at any time (most of the moves are the same, and there are 4 or 5 signature moves per character). If you are a concerned parent, then this game is NOT FOR KIDS!
