Best launch game

This game is brilliant. It is the best tetris knockoff since tetris itself. I would strongly recommend this game to anyone who owns a psp. While there are other great psp games this one stands above them all.

A surprisingly wonderful title that appeals to everyone

Having an urge to buy a new PSP game, but seeing how few there are, I found myself in a bit of a dilemma. The games are not cheap, and there isn't much variety in any one genre. Coupled with the fact that I don't care much for puzzle games, the pickings seemed slim. I had previously discounted Lumines because I never liked Tetris and really didn't want to get anything resembling it. Yet I heard so many good things about it, that I decided to take the advice of the sales clerk at GameStop and purchase it.

In about 15 minutes, I became hooked.

The gameplay is only superficially similar to Tetris. Large blocks of four small blocks start at the top of the screen ready to fall. Any single block can be one of two colors. A vertical timeline travels across the screen from left to right, reappearing on the left after it leaves the screen on the right. The goal is to form squares of four blocks of the same color. You can move the large block left and right, rotate it, and speed its descent. When it "lands" on the bottom (or on top of other blocks), another large block appears that will start descending on its own in a few moments, and you can then manipulate the new one. If a large block (four smaller ones) lands on other blocks so that it overhangs, the overhang will continue to drop. There are no "holes" left in the playing field because of this.

Once a square of four same-colored blocks is formed, it's flagged for deletion. It will not be deleted until the timeline passes over it. As the timeline moves across the playing field, it picks up the blocks flagged for deletion, and the points for each square formed is accumulated in the timeline. Bonus points are awarded for multiple squares being formed. When the timeline reaches the right side of the screen, the points are added to your score.

At times, a single block has a glowing sphere in it. If a square is formed with one of these blocks, all same-colored blocks that can be connected to it are flagged for deletion too.

Gameplay becomes surprisingly addictive as you try to form as many squares as possible. Since squares can overlap, a grid of 2x3 (six blocks) yields two squares, and a grid of 3x3 yields four squares. You find yourself timing the placement of the blocks to just after the timeline has passed so that you have more time to build onto the squares to gain bigger bonuses. During the course of the game, the background and music changes, and the colors of the blocks change.

The game is fun, addicting, and difficult to put down. It is designed very profesionally and is a welcome addition to my gaming library.

This game is great!

My husband bought me this game for Valentine's Day and I have been stuck on it ever since. It is totally addictive, definitely challenging, and a great way to pass any amount of time. This is the next generation game for those of us who loved Tetris and Dr. Mario.

Not sure why so many people like this one.

I love my PSP. I've enjoyed every game I've played for it. Lumines, however, didn't live up to the hype and I just felt cheated.

It's not as much fun as Tetris by any means: it's flashier, prettier, and has better music, but it just isn't as fun to play! I found the puzzles really easy until suddenly one was hard and there was nothing to do to try any others. So I got a tip from the internet for that puzzle and then suddenly they were easy ones again until I got bored and stopped. The endless mode got boring before it ever approached being tough...after about 30 minutes that too was boring.

I finally sold mine. It's not a terrible game, and it may be just right for you, but I have to recommend trying before you buy.

More fun than Tetris?

If you are the kind of person that enjoys spinning and dropping blocks until you can't see straight, this game could even be more fun than Tetris! [I do, and it is...]
The one drawback for me: If I could just figure out how to get it to change the order of songs in its default challenge mode, because that first one is REALLY starting to irritate me!
Well, maybe I'll just have to buy Lumines II to get around it...

I'm finally able to downgrade my psp. Now I can write my own software to study on it!

It's a funny thing about puzzles--the simpler they are, the more addictive they can be. Tetsuya Mizuguchi's stylishly eccentric Lumines joins the ranks of Tetris and Bejeweled as the newest game you can't stop playing. The mechanic couldn't be more basic: rotate and drop the blocks to form squares of the same color. A beam that sweeps across the screen at regular intervals clears them away. In single-player mode, the goal is keep the screen as clear as possible and rack up points with multi-square combos. That's it&but there are several other modes that add new levels of difficulty and strategy. Choose from VS CPU or two-player VS to match reflexes with the A.I. or another player, or puzzle mode to complete challenges, unlocking more puzzles. Advancing in single-player mode will unlock new skins and fresh tracks.
The combination of electronic music and softly psychedelic colors is spellbinding. It's like holding a mini rave in your hand. Turn it on--it's delicious.

This game is great. Its just like tetris but a lot better. The picture is great(like all of the PSP games). One thing I dont like about it is the music. It is a bit boring and annoying. The game gets a little boring until you unlock different backrounds which is easy.Overall its a fun game.I think it is a great game to get.

Lumines is the PSP equivalent to what Tetris what for the original Game Boy. A fantastic title. If you own a PSP, make no hesitation and acquire this puzzle masterpiece.
