Like Resident Evil for Xbox!

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 3 / 4

This is one of the best hack'n slash game on the Xbox. It's definetly worth buying if you like Resident Evil or House of the Dead. The graphics are very good and add to the scary environments. The best part about the game is facing off against hordes of monsters and mowing them down with guns and melee weapons such as battle axes and chain saws. The game starts easy and progressively gets harder, but not so hard you can't eventually defeat whatever you are fighting. The game is a lot of fun with multiplayer but the monsters are also harder to kill. It's better to play with more than two people if you can because the game gets so hard in multiplayer.

There are quite a few weapons that are all sweet to use and monsters to blow away piece by piece. If you at all don't like graphic games then this isn't your game. There is an option to turn the blood off but then it wouldn't be the same. There can be up to 30 monsters on screen at one time and once you get done massacreing all of them there is always puddles of blood everywhere.

So if you don't mind blood and love killing zombies and other freaks o'nature then you don't want to pass up this game!

A TRUE review (in my own opinion, of course :-)

Okay...I bought this game the day it came out, and thought that I would lend my review. Some of the reviews here are from people who didn't know what they were getting in to when they purchased/rented the game, and gave it unfair reviews. While the person reviewing the game didn't enjoy it, and might give it a low score, it was generally because they didn't know what to expect from the game.

First off, this game was developed to be a multi-player game. For any of you who remember the old games like Gauntlet (or the newer versions of Gauntlet), this game is basically a newer, more updated game of the same type. You get up to 3 friends (for the most fun you really want all 4 players in) and basically just spend the next few (many?) hours hacking away at the undead. The action certainly does get repititious, but it is not mindless.

To beat the game you will need all four players to be mindful of their actions, and everyone has to work together. For instance, the Judge character and the police-woman character (forget her "type" right now) are both VERY multi-player driven characters. The judge can use his "Edge" (magic, in typical terms) to lay out a whole host of enemies; however, he has to use it when it is necessary, and he has to be sure and get the most enemies he can. To do this, the entire group should work together to get the enemies lined up for him. The police-woman is the healer of the group, and everyone has to recognize where she is at all times so that the group can be the most efficient with her healing powers.

I have beat the game in single-player and two-player mode (with my wife), played thru almost the entire game with three-player, and played thru parts with 4-player. Do not buy this game for the single-player portion of it. You will be disappointed. While it is fun, the entire game takes around 8-10 hours to beat, and you'll wish you had rented it. However, if you have a few friends who like to get together and enjoy barking commands at and helping one another, you DEFINITELY have to get this game.

Boring

I was bored of this game within a few minutes. It seemed like it would be a better Gauntlet and looked like it was going to deliver. The opening screens are amazing and graphics during the game are great. However, gameplay just isn't interesting. You pick your character and then run around and kill hordes of creatures with a variety of weapons. That's it. To make it more annoying, the camera doesn't move well with you at all, making it difficult to see what you need (want) to see.

Although Gauntlet falls far short of Hunter in the graphics department, it is much better overall game. I'll stick with that.

Boring!!!

This game is hours of mindless frustration, and boredom. If you don't love slasher films, this game is gonna [stick]! The camera angle is terrible and you have no control over it, which makes aiming nearly impossible. The bad guys(zombies with guns)pop out of nowhere continuously like Night Caster, and i have OFTEN gotten so many enemies on the screen that the game bogs down. While the glorious xbox does its best to make the game pretty the animation is terrible, and cut scenes look like the PS one. All in all this game isn't worth [the price]. Hang onto your money and wait for the price to come down-way down-like used. Or buy a good game, HALO,JSRF,Gotham Racing,GunValk,BloodWake. Im taking mine back today.

Lots of multiplayer fun!

I had been counting the days until this game was released. It looked very cool from all the previews and the final product does not disappoint! The graphics are great and the 5.1 sound is very active. It is a lot like Gauntlet: Dark Legacy, but with better graphics, sound, and storyline.

The visuals in this game are fantastically detailed. You can chop off zombie heads, arms, torsos, and legs...all with the requisite blood splatter. The 5.1 sound is very good in letting you know where the monsters are coming from. The multiplayer option allows up to four people to play together at the same time without splitting the screen. All in all, I have yet to find a fault with this game.

This game had a lot of promise. Admittedly not a huge fan of Gauntlet or RPGs as a genre, I felt this game would deliver. I was wrong. Giving it 3 stars is actually kind of generous.

Breakdown (1 Awful to 10 Great)

Gameplay: 5
The control scheme is OK and not overly complicated considering the different weapons and spells available. The biggest problem lies with the camera and diversity. The camera provides some awkward moments that can get you killed. It looks as though no one really put any thought into having smooth and seamless movement as a foundation upon which to build this adventure. The repetiveness of the game and the little diversity- or good diversity- in monsters to kill will sour you on this game real quick. Another beef: you cannot save until the end of a level, which will really frustrate you. Multiplayer is a plus. You can have all 4 on one screen at the same time. This, as is the case with similar set ups, can also lead to getting you killed because someone is too far away and you cannot move.

Graphics: 7
The graphics are actually pretty good, tapping into some of the power of the XBOX. It does not suffer with all four players on one screen, either. Perhaps the lone bright spot.

Replay: 5
For all of the reasons listed in the "Gameplay" section above and the lack of different game modes or mini-games make this a rental at best. I sold it after only having it 2 weeks.

Overall, I give it a 6 out of 10... again being generous. It does have imaginative "Boss" monsters and a somewhat interesting storyline, but this is not a great game and if you like RPGs with scrolling movement, then you probably better stick with Gauntlet.

Great game with very few downfalls

Hunter:The Reckoning is a great game. I would recommend this game for anyone who likes hack-n-slash and/or Resident Evil style games. Basically you pick from one of four characters, each with their own special abilities (Edges), and cut and blast your way through hords of zombies, werewolves, vampires, and other nightmareish creatures.

The graphics are excellent. Usually games of this nature are cheaply and quickly thrown together by a company who just wants some quick cash, but you can tell Hunter is not one of those. Blood, character movement, and the environment are all rendered with some of the best graphics the Xbox has to offer. You can cut and blast enemies lim for lim and watch realistic looking blood fly on the ground and walls.

The storyline is also pretty catchy, if a bit lame. All the events in the game are based around vampires and their attempt to control humans. As advance through the game you learn more about the plot from bosses and clues found in the environment.

The biggest complaint I have with the game are the controls. While they are set up well, there are flaws with the combination attacks you can do. This is mainly a problem when using melee weapons; your character will do a combo attack when you pull the right trigger three times, but a lot of times doing a combo attack only gets you hit more by enemies coming in another direction. There needs to be a way to stop in the middle of a combo attack and change direction in order to face other enemies.

Another thing to remember is to keep the game disc incredibly clean and scratch free. The Xbox does not play this game well at all when the disc is dirty or damaged. The main problem is with saving your progress; the game will tell you you don't have enough memory on your hard drive, and a memory card, to save your progress when in fact you do.

Other than those two problems I have no other complaints with this game. Keep the disc clean and learn when to use combos and you will enjoy it too!

Multi-player Bloodbath for the Mature

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 2 / 4

I like choices. I like the idea that mature-rated games are available and mature players can enjoy them without another senator or congressman making it a political issue. I say ban firearms if you want to stop violence, but don't ban violant games and make mature gamers suffer. OK, with that out of the way, Hunter IS a gory bloodbath mayhem. There are blood and amputated limps everywhere, and the bloodstains stay. You have plenty of ways to dice up, blow up and hack up any undead that gets in your way. It is violent, repetitive, yet addictive and most importantly fun.

Graphics 8.0
Don't expect an eye-candy galore. The graphics are nice and adequate, but nothing new or mind-blowing. There are a couple of Next-Generation XBox titles out there that make it tough for others to match. Player models and the monsters are nicely done; some are better than the others. One obvious thing people will notice is the texture and bit mapping that XBox can achieve easily. Some monsters show slick, bloody, and slimy endodermis that reflected very well on Xbox, so as some character's shinny leather.

Sound 8.0
Sound is OK too. People with Dolby Surround setup can enjoy the nice feature that comes with this game. When playing a hack-n-slash game like, you want to listen to the loading and bursting of firearms, explosions of surroundings, and the groan and roar of the monsters, and Hunter does a good job in that.

Gameplay 8.5
At first, you will just hack-n-slash away mindlessly, just to witness your power of mass destruction. Not long into the game, you will appreciate that you CAN actually devise some strategy to dispatch the undead. If you want to finish the game, you HAVE to strategize. The choice of 4 character types is very good. One is good at melee-attack, one is good at speed, one is pretty balance, with a slight incline to Edge(magic power), and one is an all-round who is good at range-attack(the Defender, my personal favorite). There is nothing complex, sophisticated, or innovative about Hunter's gameplay. It is just simply good old bloody hack and slash funfest.

Value 8.5
Few Edges (magic power), a handful of special weapons (chainsaw, machine gun), and the 4 character types you can pick from, Hunter is a fun game to play through the first time, and still enjoyable to play through again.

Overall 8.75
I just can't figure out why, but Hunter is one simple but fun game to play. I STRONGLY recommend getting at least a co-player, it will just increase the fun a few fold. Nothing spectacular if you take every element apart; yet when all the above-average quality elements are put together, Hunter is just a classic gaming experience you should not miss. I am more inclined to give it a rent for those who only want to own Classics; BUT (the big but) if you want a great multi-player hack-n-slash in your Xbox library, Hunter will not disappoint and it is well worth the money.

WOW! the best xbox game to date

Microsoft should say thanks to hunter, this game is going to be a hit on xbox!!!
I will say this is the first real game for Xbox. Everything is great! graphics, sound, gameplay. This game has been developped for the Xbox and only for the xbox. This is why I ranked that game number 1, before Halo and max payne. you'll have a lot of fun playing with your friends!
