A lot of fun

Hunter: The Reckoning is an addictive, fun game for Mature players do to violence, gore and mild language.

The jist of the game is a simple hack-and-slash made even better by the graphics capabilities of the Xbox.

The Good:
Graphics are strong, and though the lighting is dim their is a brightness option in the game. The enemies/enviroment look great, and the blood effects are nicely done.
For a hack-and-slash there are enough suprises to keep things interesting.
The enemies may start out stupidly walking into your guns, but by the middle of the game they are quick, agile and shoot back, requiring you to develope some strategy if you want to survive.
4 Playable characters with their own unique strengths and weaknesses.
Special weapons to pick up along the way.
Sounds are done well.
Fun, Arcade feel.

The Bad:
The game play is challenging, but the boss characters are nearly impossible. And there are NO cheats! This game can be really hard, and the bosses can be really frustrating, even while going at it multiplayer.
The introduction of Edges (spells) is ok, but there are so few of them, and only one character has a heal Edge.
Would be nice if your character's Hit Meter/Edge Meter would slowly refill over time.
Continues should be easier to get, especially in Multiplayer.

The Ugly:
Your characters cannot aim up or down effectively, which means that you have to be on level ground with your enemies in order to hit them. This can be really annoying when fighting on hilly terrain, or over broken concrete, where it will seem your bullets pass right through your enemies. You can also not shoot through gates or over fences, and your character can obviously jump high, but not over anything.

Second only to Halo, this is my favorite game for the Xbox. There are better looking games and more revolutionary games, but for sheer fun, especially multiplayer fun, this is definitely worth having, or at least renting.

By now you know the concept: Gauntlet type melee set in the White Wolf universe. Hunter is non-stop action and is one of the first gmaes in a long time that allows you to pull out those extra controllers and play with friends. The multiplayer elements is highly addictive and requires a lot of team work and communication. Since it's not a first person-shooter, the action isn't divided into tiny screens and while it can get crowded on screen, especially with dozens of zombies chasing after you, it's still easy to see what's going on.

The graphics are excellent, the sound, and music are well done and the characters are really cool, I just wish there were more of them. Some of the later levels are extremely difficult and require a lot more tactics than you might be used to. The early levels are just hack and slash goodness. There's something to be said for both.

Those of you who actually play with friends or family should give this one a gander. There seems to be a flood of good sinle-player games on the market but very few multi-player. If nothing else Hunter has filled a gap that desperately needed filling.

Hunter the Reckoning hasnt gotten much hype but i played this game today and it is awesome. This game is up there with the greats such as Halo and Max Payne. For anyone who owns an xbox , you have to get this game. The storyline is great. The graphics are unbelievable and there is so much to do in the game. Believe me... once you have started playing this game you wont be able to put it down until you have beaten it.

Strangely Addictive

"Hunter" isn't the most fun game to play. It's not the best looking. It's not really the most challenging. And it doesn't require a lot of thought.

And yet you won't be able to stop playing it.

Yes, "Hunter" falls right in as one of those games that, in spite of its shortfalls, is just a blast to play. You basically go through, slashing and shooting your way through over twenty levels of zombie-filled madness. You can choose from four hunters, each with unique weapons, but also with the ability to pick up other weapons along the way. Each Hunter also has different special abilities, called "edges", which enable you to perform special attacks, improve your skills for a limited amount of time, or heal yourself. Your character's skills also can improve with experience or by stepping on special symbols on the ground.

The gameplay is pretty straightforward. The left thumbstick moves your character and your right thumbstick aims. This enables you to move in one direction while aiming and firing in another, which is very useful when you have a huge group of zombies going for your head. The difference in the characters dictates how you play. If your character is strong, you might want to use your melee attacks. If your character is fast, you probably should use your guns instead.

The levels are, for the most part, massive and jammed with enemies. Most of the level goals aren't anything harder than "find the hostages" or "keep the girl alive". There's surprisingly a wide range of foes for you to shoot, from zombies to huge, lumbering beasts. The fighting, while staying pretty much exactly the same throughout the game, never gets boring just because there are so many enemies on the screen at the same time. You have to see the entire screen to stay alive. There are also a few bosses to pique your interest, but, for the most part, the battles only require you to dodge and shoot.

Graphically, "Hunter" looks good. The characters are very detailed and the environments are well rendered. The only thing holding "Hunter" back graphically is that, most of the time, the characters are so small that you can't see the detail. Soundwise, there's nothing special here.

The only thing I didn't like about "Hunter" was that, while the story was interesting, you only got cutscenes every few levels, so you can easily forget what happened before. There also seem to be a lot of events that appear to be pivotal to the game, but then are forgotten completely, like they never happened.

Overall, as I said, "Hunter" is not one of the greatest games in history, but it's a fun and strangely addicting game that will keep your Xbox buzzing for hours.

I really liked this game and definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys third person games. It's a typical Hack and Slash game with a great storyline. THe graphics are a plus, there are a good selection of enemies to fight off, and U can play multiplayer for hours. I think anyone interested should at least rent it and then you will be hooked and will want to buy it.

not just a hack-n-slash? right. personally i'd say this is just a hack-n-slash, but a hack-n-slash well worth your money. anyways, what could be better than killing some zombies with 1 to 3 other friends? well of course there is better things, but in the realm of multiplayer there isn't many. i suggest you get this because i know when you're done playing you and your friends will be saying, "Whoa! That was awesome! Did you see when I...," etc., etc., etc. And if you're playing alone you'll be saying, "I can't wait to play tommorrow!" just get it.
there are four characters. two females, both of course with guns and a lot of fancy moves. two males, my favorite one being the preacher (the guy with the long hair and brown trenchcoat. the one on the front of the cover) because he's got a sword, a crossbow, and magical powers. the other guy is a biker with an axe.

reason alone to take advantage of the price-slashed XBOX

This game alone is reason to buy an Xbox. I preordered from the Interplay Web site and rec'd a free DVD of Night of the Living Dead. I specifically bought a lawn chair and a 30-pack of beer and left work early to play it once it arrived and all I can say is: This game does to video games what Romero's dead trilogy did to movies, therefore it is appropriate that the special edition DVD was included free. This one is a buy, buy, buy.

If repetitive games are your bag...buy Hunter!

I'll start off with a disclaimer: I am not what would be called a 'hard-core gamer.' I enjoy video games when they are mentally challenging, require serious dexterity, or are historically engaging. Hunter does not satisfy any of these criteria.

I've played Hunter for about an hour. From my take, the graphics were decent, although they in no way take complete advantage of what the Xbox can put out.

The game play...is a dog. As stated in other reviews, you can't control the camera angle, and there were times when I cursed a lamp post that obscured my line of view. What is worse, though...is that you can hardly control your own aim. The targeting system tries to guess where you are shooting, and misses probably 1/4 of the time. It is a really good thing that you can get infinite ammo -- you'll need it.

That infinite ammo comes in handy when about a trillion nameless, faceless, indistiguishable 'monsters' come on screen and amble toward you. Have you ever had the desire to shoot at a bunch of monsters, kill them all, feel the warm glow of accomplishment, and expect to be able to move on...just to find out that there are still more to kill, ad nauseam? That pretty well describes Hunter.

I honestly spent about 15 minutes running in a circle shooting at one boss. You may find that to be a real load of laughs, but I considered it to be a waste of my time. What few bullets didn't hit the wall were hardly enough to keep my attention.

I have read from other reviews that the story improves with time. I can't attest to that. I actually happened to know some of the White Wolf folks who were involved in the development of the original Vampire game. Like those games, this one is fraught with angst against...er...somebody. It's not completely clear. Perhaps we (the Hunters) are bad for being alive. Perhaps they (the 'monsters') are bad for being dead. Perhaps they are only bad because they were criminals... Honestly, who knows?

The bottom line: I was going to buy this game today. I decided to rent it instead. I am exceptionally happy that I made that choice. Hunter is repetitive, unengaging, and boring. To wrap things up from the opening of this review...I am not a hard-core gamer. If I were, I would find this game laughable -- about as challenging and interesting as Nightcaster. As a mid-level kind of gamer, I found it challenging in only one way: it truly challenged my sense of good taste in game development.

Definitely worth a look . . .

This is a classic hack-n-slash, kill everything in sight game. You can choose one of four characters (1-4 players), each with different abilities. Game play is fairly basic: survive, meet a few objectives, and beat the bosses. Hunter does a good job of showcasing the graphical features of the Xbox with lots of special effects, and has pretty good sound.

On the down side, the game can get tedious with the sheer number of zombie monsters you have to kill. I would have liked to see more variety in the zombies -- you can only kill so many tattered-blue-jeans-denim-shirt zombies before you crave for one in a t-shirt.

These complaints aside, the game is definitely worth a look.

Xbox has a winner on its hands.

I'm proud owner of both an Xbox and a PS2. So far, my game collection leans more towards the PS2 when it comes to quantity, but this year most of the quality games I've bought have been Xbox and this console has another winner on its hands with this game.

Hunter: The Reckoning is a very fun and exciting adaptation of the White Wolf pen-and-paper roleplaying game. The multi-player co-op mode is fun in the same kind of fun as Gauntlet is. I also like the fact that one of the multi-player option is the ability to damage your friends in gameplay if your aim is too crazy. This adds a certain level of strategy and positioning while playing. Nothing like blasting away the very people who are there to help you that can make the game interesting.

I give this a definite buy!
