It is increasingly difficult to read the reviews on this page, mostly because they are absolutely inane. When looking at a review, I want to know if the game was fun, if the gameplay was tight, how good the story was, and whether or not the graphics and sound added to the game. Since I have played Syphon Filter 2, I will let everyone out there know that yes, this game is fun. The level of difficulty is fairly high, and many times you will have to go through a level a number of times to pass it. But really, would you want to spend your money on a game that you can take out in one night? The story is very effectively laid into the game with in-game movies and voice-overs. The graphics, while not the best on the market, are very solid and add to the feel of the game. The sound, including the great soundtrack, is wonderful. And the controls, which can take a while to learn if you didn't play the original (I didn't), are solid. All in all, this is a fantastic game that will be challenging for anyone who is looking for an exciting game to play.

Newcomers need not apply.

A warning: If you haven't mastered the first Syphon Filter, this game will prove an extremely difficult one.

Syphon Filter 2, both in terms of story and gameplay, doesn't pretend to be an independent game from the original. In fact it has the feel of a mission pack -- the story picks up exactly where the original left off, and the level of difficulty of Syphon Filter 2 (somewhere in the stratosphere) goes beyond the toughest levels of the original.

A couple of weaknesses about Syphon Filter 2 stems from this. First, even the first levels are intensely difficult -- there are no relatively easy levels where you can hone your controls and reflexes; if you haven't played Syphon Filter and cut your teeth on how to strafe, aim a two-handed weapon while running, reload, roll, manoeuvre, use explosive weapons and pull off split-second headshots, you won't get much breathing space here to practise it. Syphon Filter 2 is VERY DIFFICULT. What bugs me more than the difficulty is that most of the missions (especially stealth missions) are dependent not on wits and skill, but on familiarity -- for example, if you don't know already where the G.I.s in the exhibition center are, you won't be able to avoid being detected. The result is that it's nearly impossible on most levels to finish on the first try, which is a bummer in terms of story continuity. The save-game system is a slight notch above the original but still flawed. I don't understand why most game developers feel compelled to make saving such a big deal -- in Syphon 2, you can't save without quitting your current game first, and on one enraging occasion a bug in the game resulted in an entire mission being lost (I'd saved the game before the scene had finished fading in completely so when I loaded the game, the bug caused my character to "fall into limbo" and die automatically and instantaneously every time I load).

With the grumps out of the way, there's a lot of good things I can say about Syphon 2. Controls are still good (though a little better in the original), the story is detailed and absorbing, and the new weapon options (crossbow, silenced HK-5s, combat knife) are intriguing, even though the hand-to-hand weapons have nearly no range and take a long time to adjust to. One huge plus of this game is, surprisingly, the voice acting. This usually doesn't matter much in adventure games, but on Syphon 2 the cast of old ("Gabe Logan" is still played by bass-voiced John Chacon) and new voice actors was obviously picked with care, and do incredibly well on the extended, well considered cinematic sequences. The smartypants "Teresa Lipan" especially provides a spunky counterpart to the new, soft-spoken "Lian Xing". Little things like that really enhance your sense of character and your stake in their success and failure. The score, of course, is rousing and kinetic, as befits the franchise, and the "Select Mission" option in the menu has been greatly improved -- if you select a later mission, now, you won't be stuck with just 45 damned bullets for your 9mm, but will be restored to the equipment you had when you were at that level in your loaded game.

Despite its incredible toughness, Syphon Filter 2 is destined to be a classic.

Simply the Best Game Sequel of the Year

When I learned Syphon Filter 2 was in the stores, I instantly put up my Dreamcast and pulled my Playstation out of retirement. I was not disappointed! The enemies soldiers are more ruthless, and the storyline is more polished. What I loved most about this game is that I'm able to use my honed skills from Syphon Filter 1 to move through the levels. A lot of people who said the game was difficult probably tried to outshoot their way through scenes and got drop to their knees. This game requires you to use your head more than the weapons at your disposal. I strongly suggest buying Syphon Filter 1 and finishing before you play number 2. Both are excellent games from 989 that helps Playstation be the best game console on the market.

As much fun as the original

The original Syphon Filter is probably one of my all-time favorite PlayStation games, so I had really high expectations for this sequel. In general, I wasn't disappointed.

The new weapons were neat, and I got much more of a feeling of really being in the game than in the first installment. A few things, like seeing "Head Shot" next to *my* head, really got my adrenaline going.

As others have pointed out, this is a TOUGH game, and some levels are just impossible to survive in the first pass. I found I had to repeat several of them, and it got tedious in some spots. More "Checkpoints," where gameplay resumes, would have been nice.

It also runs beautifully on the Connectix Virtual Game Station 1.2, a PlayStation emulator for the Mac. I love being able to play this on an airplane on my laptop.

I highly recommend Syphon Filter 2, but definitely cut your teeth on the first game before you jump into this one.

This is possibly my favorite game on any video game system. When I heard about a sequel to Syphon Filter, I set my N64 on fire, put away my dreamcast, finished my homework, and pulled my Playstation out of retirement. This game starts in the Pharcom Wharehouses where Gabe is still cleaning up from the first Syphon Filter. In this movie you hear a lot of talking, see some cool images, and watch Gabe just plaster all of the guards as cool music plays. This game has 21 levels. There are some cool missions: The Colorado incident, Pharcom Expo Center, Moscow, Aljir Prison, and New York City. This game has some cool guns too: Combat Knife and stun gun, air tazer, Gabe's 9mm and a .45 mag, 3 different pistol machineguns, 3 different assault rifles, 3 different sniper rifles, an M-79 grenade launcher and a teargas launcher, and dont forget grenades. This game has some pretty decent graphics. There are few polygonal errors, the M-16 doesnt have a butt to it, straight lines tend to bend when you turn near them, and sometimes a grenade can go through a wall. These glitches happen very rarely when your CD is clean and aren't that noticable. The replay value is limited to Hard Mode and the awesome two player deathmatch. THE DEATHMATCH STUFF IS ONE OF THE BEST AROUND AND I WISH IT WERE ON THE NET. There are 20 arenas ranging from a village in Italy, to an incubator lab. The fact that a head shot kills in deathmatch is just one realistic fact that makes me love the game. I practice head shots for hours just to beat my friends. This game rocks and so does its predecessor. This game is fairly easy once you beat the first one but newcomers. . . watch out. Click on buy right now and you wont regret it.

Facts: 21 awesome weapons- combat knife, silenced 9mm handgun,.45 handgun,M-16 assault rifle,G-18 pistol machinegun,BIZ-2 pistol machinegun,HK-5 pistol machinegun,12 guage shotgun, UAS-12 auto shotgun, PK102 assault rifle, K3G4 assault rifle, H-11 auto sniper rifle, sniper rifle, nightvision rifle, crossbow, hand tazer, air tazer, grenade, gas grenade, M-79 grenade launcher, and the tear gas launcher. Levels- mountaintop, airforcebase interior, I-70, I-70 bridge, airforcebase exterior, train, train race, C-130 crash site, Pharcom Expo Center, Morgan, Club 32, Moscow Streets, Volkov Park, Gregarov, Aljir Prison, Aljir Escape, Agency Bio-Lab, Bio-Lab escape, New York Slums, Slums Sewer district, and the Finale. Characters: Gabriel Logan, Lian Xing, Teresa Lipan, Jason Chance, Lyle Stevens, Dillion Morgan, Michael Archer, Dr. Elsa Wessinger, Uri Gregarov, Mara Aramov, and Lawrence Mujari. Multi Player- 20 awesome arenas: some are small, some are big. 28 awesome characters: ranging from Gabe to a bag lady. Downside to this part is the lock on sucks here unless you are crouching. Opinions: Pros- Never a cooler game! The storyline is great with all of those cool movies. Gabe is the same voice actor. The HK-5 is more abundant. Good acting. Nice multi-player capabilities. Great rolls, climbs, and sniper scopes not found in Goldeneye. Cons- In the levels, every guard has the same face. In stealth missions, the guards have practically no perifeal vision. There is no sky at night. Overall: This game has some pretty good graphics, there are some glitches but that is OK. If you play Medal of Honor you forget about graphics and get down to fun. The movies and acting segments are pretty impressive and funny when they get violent.(like when Lian bashes that guy Holman upside the head with a .45 and shoots him with his own HK-5) Good AI, in a stealth mission they actually can see ahead of them unlike Metal Gear Solid where they can only see three feet in front of them. Killer Weapons! The weapons are cool just to put it in simple words. The coolest part about these weapons is that all of them are real and most are American, of course I do believe that the coolest ones like the air tazer are illegal. Awesome Multi-Player! One second you and your friend are just having a friendly exhange of bullets, then you find yourself running for you life as your friend goes for your head with an assault rifle! Need I say more, this game is for anyone who loves those killer games, self strategy, spies, good graphics, or just plain fun. The storylines in Playstation games make them sometimes better than movies. Just click on buy now and you wont be dissapointed. out

I am an adult gamer who also happens to be a cop. I love the action games and Syphon Filter 2 finishes at the top of the charts. In my opinion it far exceeds the first game. The plot is deeper and thicker than the Syphon Filter 1. Personally, I would recomend playing SF1 before playing 2. The experience from the first game definately helps in playing #2. I really enjoyed the 2 player portion of the game, where you play against another player much like the 007 game for nintendo. Overall, I would highly recomend this game for anyone with a taste for high action/high violence. Parents do not buy this for younger players. It has pretty graphic scenes. Sniper head shots, blood, language, etc. But MAN! This game is fun!

Syphon Filter 2 is by far the best action game ever made for the Playstation. The graphics are spectacular and the sound is great.Since the gameplay is almost exactly as Syphon Filter 1, getting started is very easy for someone who has played the first. The new weapons and designed as the real thing and the new enemies are difficult and challenging.Although it may take a while to beat the game, it is worth the money. The 2 player mode is not as good, however. It's very hard to keep track of where you are in the split screen. Also, not enough places to play in the 2 player mode unless you go through the one player mode and save at certain points. Another good thing for the one player mode is the saving. Even though it may take a few times to get past a level, you always have that checkpoint so you won't stazrt at the VERY beginning like other games. All in all this is an exciting, fun, difficult yet awesome game to own and play.I'd buy it if i didnt already have it.

Syphon Filter was perhaps my favorite game, so I was very anxious for the 2nd. Well I wasnt let down I'm happy to say. The story basicly takes off right where the first ends. The only difference is SF2's story line if much deeper, interaction with other characters in the missions not just inbetween missions. If you liked the first one, you wont be dissapointed by the 2nd :) BTW more weapons :)
