pros:
amazing
great story
lots of planes
good replay value

cons:
umm... i can't think of any (screw graphical problems, the graphics do not make the game)

Very realistic, in-depth game!!

Out of all the four titles this one ranks up there with ace combat 2. (I wasn't too fond of ace combat 3, and air combat was in itself just a starting point for Namco) Where to begin... I guess I'll start with the bad... I was used to using the D-pad to control the aircraft, but I had to get used to using the analog stick. (the good news is that it did not take long at all to get the hang of it) The next somewhat bad thing is the fact that you cannot pinpoint what exactly are your targets in the briefing room, only take a brief look at how they're grouped together (I guess the answer for that problem is to pay attention to the briefing itself) The last bad thing is the mission count... not nearly enough. I picked up the copy just yesterday (10/24) and I'm finished with it today (in normal mode, I guess next step is the hard mode)
Now the goodies... visually it's just about the best non pc "flight combat sim" i've seen (it can probably hang with the pc sims, except the number of options is greatly diminished) It handles well, it's fairly easy to get used to the kind of plane you're flying. The storyline is actually compelling (although it could've taken somewhat of a better route at the end) the ability to refuel/rearm works wonders too, and you can use that to your advantage. There's more landing sequences which I greatly appreciate. The 2 player versus mode is quite entertaining... there's probably more gizmos in the game, perhaps I haven't unlocked them yet. (all I got from finishing the game is the free mission and trial mission options) Overall a great game, definitely worth my money, now if there were only a second disk... :)

Awesome Game!!!

This is the most realistic flight/shooter game I have ever played. The terrain's are so life-like, and you can purchase better weapons and better aircraft as you complete your missions.Go out and get this one right away if you like flight sims, you won't be disappointed.

I have been a fan of the Ace combat series for ages. Unfortunatly many of them were pretty much the same game and very little new in them. That however is not the case with Shattered skies. The graphics are absolutly amazing, except for maybe the explosions which are a little dull when compared to the detail in the rest of the game. It is not too hard to learn. You have various difficulties to chose from and a large selection of aircrat and ordanence to buy. Gangs of fun. My only real complaint is that 18 missions is way too short. They could have easily done twice that many. The storyline that appears at the beginning of most missions is very interesting and can help pull you into the game. This game is alot of fun.

Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies

Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies is magnificent. It is a game that manages to caputre the classic gameplay and feel of the second game (which was the best in the series) while adding in many new innovative features.
There are many things that seperate this game from the first three. The special effects in Ace Combat 04 are much better than the others becauase of PS2's great graphical capibility. There are many new camera angles to choose from. More than any Video Game Flight Simulator on the market. There is an innovative missle view. This lets you lock-on to the missle you just fired at an enemy aircraft. It is very entertaining to watch your missle fired from miles away and it blowing a enemy MiG-29 out of the sky.
This game has a storyline. Not many simulators have had much of an involved storyline. There are little cutscenes showing parts of your charicters life and over time you figure out why he is doing what he is doing. The year is 2014 (i think) There is a new cannon that is used to protect the Earth from incoming asteroids. There is a war waged over this cannon and is used to shoot down aircraft. There are two forces. All the locations are not specified. They are all fictional. You join a force called the ISF that tries to take back their country. Your montive to join is this. Two aircraft are dogfighting around your homeland. One is shotdown and its remaining body crashes into the house that your family lives in. All are killed. He sees the aircraft that shot him down. Ingraved were giant yellow letters that said 13. Over time, you learn that its yellow squadron. They are highly elite and Yellow 13 is the best amoung them. You encounter the squadron over a few missions you fly. They are much harder then ordinary aircraft.
You can buy weapons in Ace Combat 04. Different aircraft come with different weapons avalible. The F-14 lets you use the famous Phoenix Missle. These famous missles let you destroy a target up to 9 miles away. In real life, they are 2 million dollers a piece. They also have non guided bombs with most aircraft.
You can refuel and rearm during missions. This is a new and useful feature. You can exit the level to land at your home airport or aircraft carrier to rearm and refuel. Some missions take a long time to complete, forceing you to rearm/refuel.
The graphics are great. There are nice shading/shadowing effects on the aircraft and scenery depending on where the sun is located. There are heatwaves that stream from your afterburners. There are wakes of water when you fly close to the water.
This game is the best in the series. Flight Sims are uncommon in the video game market. But this game stands out among the others.

I'm a newcomer to the Ace Combat series, and I must say, I'm very impressed. Here's why:

GRAPHICS: All the aircraft in this game look photorealistic. From high altitudes, the backgrounds look photorealistic as well. However, when you drop to lower altitudes, the ground starts to get real pixal-like and blurry. At times it looks as if there's another thousand or two-thousand feet below you, when there's really not. The cutscenes are done in the manner of a children's book with painted or cartoon-like backgrounds.

SOUND: If you think that the sound of your engines sounds dreadfully real, well, it's because it is. They actually recorded the engine sounds for various aircraft at different stages of flight. During combat, you'll hear lots of radio chatter. In one mission, you'll even get to listen to a local radio station telling its listeners what's happening while you're wreaking havoc in the skies above.

MUSIC: After you beat the game once (make sure you save afterwards, though), you can listen to all the music tracks in the game (among other things). By themselves, though, the tracks aren't all that great, but with the tremendous exception of "Rex Tremendae" and the song immediately following it. Those two are the songs you listen to while playing the final mission. Personally, I'm a big fan of the Final Fantasy series. Ace Combat was the last place I'd have thought to find some ending level/boss music of Nobuo Uematsu's quality. "Rex Tremendae" and the following track are choir pieces, but they sound as good as FF7's "One-Winged Angel".

GAMEPLAY: There are 18 different missions (not including the training missions) and each one of them has a different background, objective, background music, etc. You'll fly through canyons, over oceans, cities, snow-capped mountains (reminded me of Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back), deserts and supporting ground troops storming beaches Normandy-style. Most of the time, your objective will be to shoot down all targets, get a certain amount of points, or protect a certain target. There are lots of dogfights, but there are also lots of ground targets to be destroyed as well. Sometimes you'll be torn between fighting what's above you and what's below you, but there are aircraft that can handle both situations nicely.

AIRCRAFT: There are 19. F4 Phantom, A10 Thunderbolt, F14 Tomcat, F16 Falcon, F18 Hornet, F117 Stealth fighter, F22 Raptor, lots of European aircraft, a nice variety of Mig's (go after the SU-37 or SU-37A). And although the Mig's are nice, because America has to have the best plane, we get the X-02 (excellent in about all categories, but still not as fast as the SU-37). You acquire these planes by shooting them down, then purchasing them. Be careful what you buy, though, because it sometimes takes two or three missions to accumulate enough money to purchase a single aircraft--not including extra armament.

CAMERA: One of Ace Combat's MAJOR strong points is the ability to complete your mission in third person/external view. This is due to the fact that the external view has a gunsight for all aircraft. Games like X-Wing and Tachyon had external view, but they were only for show purposes as there was no targeting system--unless you wanted to shoot around blindly. On the downside, however, the Replay camera is not as good as the replay camera in X-Wing. Ace Combat's replay camera has several angles to choose from, but the camera doesn't seem to like close-ups too well. And, unlike X-Wing, you can't see the battle from your opponents POV.

STORY: The story may seem a little childish--due to the cartoonish backgrounds--but believe me, it really is a pretty good story for a game of this type.

DIFFICULTY: There are several difficulty levels, but either way, you can easily beat this game twice in three days, and probably without getting shot down by the enemy, either. By and large, most often you'll crash because you're flying too close to the ground--which you often have to do to hit ground targets(but this is where the A10 comes in handy).

OVERALL: There's a lot more I could say about this game, but I think I touched on all the major points. And just because you can beat it in a day doesn't mean that it's just worth a rental. There is a two-player mode with various dogfighting options, multiple aircraft colors, special options after you do certain things (like beat the game or get S rank on all missions). And hey, sometimes, you just find yourself in that mood to fly fast against a beautiful background. I've beaten this game several times, but even now I still find myself playing it.

Best Flight Sim on PS2

I've been flying simulators on PCs for years. When I tried Ace Combat 4, I was amazed. The graphics, play, and game storyline are great. I've completed the missions several times but continue to play, just for the joy of flying. The missions vary and each includes a new component or graphic environment. I've tried several PS2 flightsims and this is clearly the best. It's a great deal for the current price. I'll be playing this for years to come. Now if we can get them to produce AC5, AC6, etc.

Greatest Flight Sim Game I've played yet!

I'm not going to go into much detail because the other reviews have it covered with the exception that if you're a flight sim fan, this game is a MUST HAVE. Never have I seen a console flight sim so realistic in putting the player behind the cockpit. Missions get more and more challenging as you go along; extra functions and fighters are unlocked after you beat the game, adding replay value. Also at times, certain missions call for you to make death defying maneuvers, keeping you on the edge of your chair as you either execute them successfully or cursing as you crash when you were so close. Those who lack tactical and strategic minds, and a good pilot's eye need not apply. I anxiously wait for an Ace Combat 5.

The best flight sim on the PS2, even better than AC5.

It really is nice that they have designated AC4 as part of the PS2s Greatest Hits collection, because it is. I like to assemble my own greatest hits for my various consoles and AC4 was hands down my choice as the best flight sim for the PS2. One of my main criteria for a great game is replay value and AC4 offers endless replay value. Flawless production that makes AC4 a must have for YOUR Greatest Hits collection.

GET this game.

This is my first AC game, and I'm glad it is. Simply put, this game rocks. Graphics, controls, selection, EVERYTHING is top-notch. The story is remarkably good too!

In short, GET THIS GAME NOW. You won't regret it.
