Top Gun for NES Revisited...

2 Rating: 2, Useful: 3 / 6
Date: June 25, 2004
Author: Amazon User

This game reminds me of "Top Gun" for the original Nintendo console.

Its a button masher, one button to fire your cannon and another to lock-on/fire your missiles. (And somehow, your aircraft is capable of carrying 50+ missiles.)

In short, its an arcade shoot 'em up game.

No functioning fire control computer, no true MDU's, no NAV aids, no ATC integration, no anything that one would expect to find in an aircraft. You simply just "fly" and fire your 50+ missiles.

The flight model? Well, the aircraft fly like Star Wars spacecraft. You can't even stall the aircraft if you try.

Lets rock and roll Maverick...

If you like rock and rollin' in the sky, and kicking some major behind in a twin engine super machine, this is the game for you. Easy controls, fun missions, and booty smackin' graphics. The game is awesome!

If you liked any of the previous Ace Combat installations, you will simply love this game. The graphics are stunning and the gameply is marvelous. The ground below is pretty much photo-realistic. Sometimes you can even see ground troops and artillery advancing on the ground. The flares and smoke coming off the missles from the planes are mesmerizing.

The dogfights in this game are the best yet. The AI bogeys are better than those in any jetfighting movie. The control in this game is simple and fun just like all of the other Ace Combat games. You can maneuver 22 differnet planes in 18 environments. After you beat the game once, you can replay any of the missions, so there is some replay value. Go pick up AC4 today and be literraly blown away!

This is money well spent...

Wow.. this game rocks.. I think that this game is a very futuristic game that actually challeges you. I have been a gamer since atari's "PACMAN" and i tell you this is about the best game that i have played when it comes to simulation. This game has a cool story line and the best thing is the graphics.
If you are thinking of buying a simulator game get this one it will challenge you in everyway..

a great game but the language is bad

This is another fun air combat sim. Cool storymode and missions. Provide Air-to-ground support in some missions. Or take out enemy ships but watch out for the SAMS( Surface to Air Missils)
On some missions you must provide cover for a pedestrian ship and taking out radio jamming towers. The only thing bad about this game is the Language. On your radio they swear at least once every 3 min. Overall a good game. Why I rate this 4 not 5 is the story mode is kind of short. and 2 player mode is not much fun to play. At first the controls of this game are hard but it gets easier. This game is one of those games where the screen rolls around and makes you sick. Even after I play for about an hour I get to feel sick, and I am really good at handiling with things like that.

AWSOME!

ive beaten this game ile 18billion times, i think it has great replay value, with 3 paintjobs for each plane! plus a hidden plane, you can only get by beating the game all Super rating in normal mode or higher. once you beat it in normal, you can go to hard, then expert, then ACE. I think ACE is the most realistic. it makes it ALOT harder! cant wait for ACE COMBAT 5 in FAll of 2004!BUY THIS GAME NOW! i saw it for less somewhere....mighta been the target store....

In Ace 4, the story is told from the point of view of a little kid in an occupied city that happens to be the home airbase for the Yellow Squadron, the best of the best. You never find out how the war started or what the war is about. You have no idea of any ideologies, even though the kids call one of the pilot's a fascist (and feel bad about it as the pilot stares at them disbelievingly, as if he's just been insulted).

You play the game as an anonymous pilot in the other air force and have no idea what you're fighting for, other than against the other side, which apparently shops at the same foreign airplane outlet stores as your side. Throughout the game, you get the subtle sensation that the war is all just a big mistake that must be fought to the bitter end because ... I don't know.

I'm guessing that since Namco is a Japanese gamemaker, and Japan is a sorta pacifistic state anymore, the game designers didn't want to or weren't able to come up with a plausible backstory to motivate the people who would be fighting in the virtual cockpits they were designing. This is lame. It's a video game, fercryinoutloud, and the countries at war are FAKE countries, so would it be too hard to have one of them be a real bad meanie who really wants to kill your country, and have all the characters on your side committed to victory?

But the whole telling of the war as seen through a kid's observations of what appear to be wholly honorable and noble enemy pilots takes a whole lot of oomph out of the game. Hell, how hard would it have been to have made Yellow Squadron the abstract super killers and given their story to the player's side? Not. Hard. It would've taken one writer about thirty minutes on a PC to change a couple of pieces of dialogue to make it work, too.

And in the end, the kid would have had heroes to admire, not enemies to ponder indeterminate thoughts of what it means to be an enemy hero. Sheesh. I pay money for this stuff, at least put some effort into it.

The flying was all fun and the missions were mostly well done, although the final mission is a corker of unbelievability, though fun. I have no idea if these airplanes in the game fly like this in real life, though, but it doesn't matter since the graphics are great and you're usually too busy shooting stuff down or dropping bombs on things to care.

Great Fighter Combat Game...Except...

The fact that they have these lame Japanese-type comic book style cut scenes and awful voice over is why I didn't score this game a 5 out of 5.

I don't like the missions as being "made up". You can tell this game was made in Japan because the missions were kinda out there almost Metal Gear Solid-type stuff. Really unbelievable. They should've made the games more like the Navy Seals SOCOM series where you had threats that were real and in real locations. It's seemed too futuristic for me. What saved this game is the control, the combat, the missions, the weapons, the fact that you can buy additional air craft and you can actually replay the game from the beginning, keeping what you've bought and earned so far!!!

The cut scenes have this stupidly, out of place narration that thankfully can be skipped. However, the fact that they poisoned the game with that junk really is a shame.

But, I enjoy the game a lot. This is my second time playing it, this time, I'm going to try to earn a A rating on each mission. One time I even earned an "S" rating!!

After I finish this game, it's on to SOCOM III: Navy Seals!!!

One of The Greatest Game Ever!!!!!!!!!!!

Good Lord, this game's a freaking RUSH! Graphics-wise, this could be to jet fighting games what Gran Turismo 3 is to driving games -- the graphics and the detail in the jet fighters are just plain beautiful. Gameplay-wise, it's more arcade than sim, so learning to play is simple for newbies and veterans alike, so you'll be shooting down enemy jets in no time. Don't miss THIS flight!
