Well I recieved this game from my wife for Christmas 2000. I was extatic to try it. Upon creating my character, and enterring the world, I was truly amazed. But It got boring real Quick.

The good points:

Great grafics and hardly no lag.

The world is huge with dungeons and continents, cities etc.

The chat system is easy to use, and the game interface is well designed.

The bad points:

The world is huge, but people play in the popular zones only, most of the dungeons are empty, and one cannot solo the dungeons. So a huge world, yet so small.

The downtime is horrendous! When soloing you fight a mob for a minute, and have to sit and recover for 10 minutes. When your a magic user you have to stare at a book for that ten minutes.

Leveling your character takes too long in the upper levels.

Your character gets weaker as he advances, because what you fight gets so much stronger.

Travel takes forever. You take boat rides from continent to continent that take 30-45 minutes.

A very stagnent world. Nothing happens ever. And the players have no imput whatsoever.

The game system forces players to "camp" creatures for good equipment.

The upper level game 50+ must be accomplished with 20-40 players, which means an all day event 8+ hours of playing.

Some classes are basically useless in the upper level of the game, so its frustrating to level a character to 50+ and not be able to find a group of people to hunt with.

And above all this game is a life-wrecker. You will be so addicted that all you will think about in your waking hours is Everquest, and all you will dreanm about is everquest, if you sleep at all.

This game had alot of potential, but it was poorely executed by the developers.

It's fun, but not perfect.

I bought this game with no real idea of how much fun it might be. I have been playing for a good while now, and I think its one of the best games I have ever played, not too mention the most addictive. I love RPG's, and playing with other people is so much fun for me. It does have its own problems though. Some areas become super crowded with players, and after you die you start off at your home city, and should you die in some far off land, then it takes for ever to get your corpse. But other then those problems, this game is really worth trying. All the different races (dwarves, humans, barbarians, trolls, elves, etc.), all the different classes (warriors, paladins, mages), it is so great! I recommend this to anyone who wants to try it.

WOW!

I bought EQ long after it's initial release, yet I cannot say that I am any less enamoured with it's fullness and complexity. A TRUE roleplayers dream, not those of you who claim to be one but quit at the end of the day. A place where you can go to truly act out your character creation, his/her personality, beliefs, and morals. Joining a guild in EQ is even more fun. A regular crowd that you get to know very well, I have met several in person already that are in mine. Alas, no game is perfect, and EQ is no exception. Oftentimes lag removes enjoyment, and for those of us RPers out there, the powergamers are just too much of a joke, only playing a game to beat it, not enjoy it. (NOTE: you can't beat EQ, there is no end, just like TRUE roleplay). Even with the problems it has, I haven't played another game in 7 months.

What you make of it.

The beauty of Everquest is the open ended flexibility that the game provides. It has no clear cut ending, no ultimate goal. Traditional gamers may be turned off by this, but for the roleplayer, the escapism can be very rewarding.

If I had this when I was playing paper and pen roleplaying games years ago, I would have no social life. I am now restricted by other responsibilities, but it is much more intelligent than watching TV or reading pulp fiction.

Bottom line. Perfection can not be found here, but if you are willing to invest a little energy into your character and you are looking for a fun non-pressured gaming experience, EverQuest can be a thrilling gaming experience.

This game is HUGE! There is so much to do and see that replayability of this game is high. I have never seen a game of it's scale, and the ability to interact with other players makes the game more fun.

Made so that players can play cooperatively to defeat monsters and complete quests, or you can be a player killer running around to see who's the best, and they managed to allow player vs player (pvp) interaction without interfering with those who wish to play cooperatively. Unlike some other online games where you have to hope that another player will keep his word (which often they do not...)

I strongly recommend this to anyone who enjoys RPG's and especially if you like Circle or Diku MUDs which this game resembles in many ways, but with vivid graphic representation and on a massive scale (usually from 1,000-2,000 players on a given server at a time...)

A decent addition to and otherwise good game.....

While the talk of Everquest being slow below is sometimes true and the customer service support is atrocious. Overall the speed is fine as long as you aren't playing on a bare minimum system, the game is great and while gameplay isn't as smooth as asheron's call it's certainly full of more choices than Microsoft's version. Well worth the money I pay every month to play :)

Fun and Educational too

One might wonder why I'd say Everquest is educational...I've met people from various parts of the world on Everquest, and become friends with many, you can learn about other people and cultures from the game, and you certainly can be whoever you want. Guilds make this game even more fun, although people now seem to be turning to Diablo II since it's the new game...it doesn't matter much though, because Everquest will still go strong.

Everyquest is the best online RPG there is in the market, and with the two expansions, it gets better. Incredible graphics, awesome worlds, races, class's to see, ...Everyquest is what you make of it. Lots of people do roleplay and you can if you choose to it only makes the game funner for you. There are tons of quests to do, plenty of land to explore, and new people to meet. There are some downpoints to EQ though...First off, it is HIGHLY ADDICTIVE. You will be consumed into the world of everquest playing long days and all night till morning untill you eyes are bleeding. EQ can be very laggy with mass amounts of people in the same area, movement is almost unbareable. Overcrowded servers are another problem...lots of places to gain EXP is over camped due to the large number of people on the server. I don't think the price is too unreasonable, could be a few dollars cheaper, but hey, if you are a real gamer it won't stop you. All in ALL EQ rocks. I would recomend it to the hardcore gamer...this is not a game for wimps. It involves long hours of game play to get anywhere..take it from someone who has a 58 cleric, 52 wizard, 31 sk and 17 rogue in the game :)

How EQ brainwashed the public into liking graphics over play

Ugh. What is the world coming to when we value graphics over gameplay? Daikatana was 3-D too, and guess what? It sucked. Bad. REAL bad. Companies don't seem to realize if you put a piece of crap in a box and render the crap in full 3-D with real-time lighting and weather effects, it's still a piece of crap. This game is slow, combat is repetitive, and it's waaay to hard to start a new character. Everybody oohs and aahs at the graphics but I for one think the graphics suck. They look like some very bad "3-D" game from the 80's. If you want a good Online RPG, play Ultima Online, it's a lot better.

This game lasted a very short time for me. It takes forever to Level at the higher levels. I am currently level 26 and quitting the game. There are 60 levels now with the addition of Kunark. At 26, it will take me 7hours of Real Life time to level up. And a friend of mine who is level 52 says it will take him weeks to level up and he is a constant gamer. If you really feel the need to waste time, this is your game. I highly recommend you find a faster, quicker game to play, since this game will take you over 50 days of play time, yes 1200 hours of play time to reach level 60 at the very least. Well, there you have the most time consuming waste of time. I am heavily dissapointed in the way this game turned. After 8 months of play ( I'm a student so i dont have too much time, but about 3hours a day ) i had two characters, level 26 and level 19. Let that do the talking
